Land Cover Changes Within And Around Protected Areas In Côte D’Ivoire From 1986 To 2017: A Case Study Of The Mabi-Yaya-Songan-Tamin Reserved Forests, Olena Boiko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tropical forests mitigate climate change, provide habitat for the most biologically diverse terrestrial communities, and yield ecosystem services that support human wellbeing. These forests are some of the most threatened ecosystems because of the increasing human impact on the environment. Côte d’Ivoire has one of the highest deforestation rates in sub-Saharan Africa, and the expansion of agriculture to produce cash crops, such as cocoa and rubber, is presented as the primary reason for forest loss. These changes are apparent even within the boundaries of the protected areas, which raises concerns about the effectiveness of the protection strategies. This project illustrates …

In this study, the physics and applications of the ultrasonic radiation force at the interface between two immiscible fluids were investigated. These studies were performed using low-profile discrete-stepped lenses to the modify the phase of the incident radiation generating multiple field morphologies. In its first application to acoustics, a fraxicon lens was developed to approximate the field generated by an axicon. This type of lens creates a minimally diffractive Bessel beam and long depth of focus that is useful in ultrasonic imaging, therapy, and non-destructive evaluation techniques. Fields modified by fraxicon, Fresnel, and axicon lenses were characterized experimentally by scanning …

Generalized Radial Transport Model For Interpreting Convergent Flow Tracer Tests In Fractured Rock, Md Lal Mamud Jan 2019

Generalized Radial Transport Model For Interpreting Convergent Flow Tracer Tests In Fractured Rock, Md Lal Mamud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The double-porosity Generalized Radial Transport (GRT) model is an extension of the generalized radial flow approach developed for hydraulic test interpretation. In both approaches, a flow dimension characterizes the change in flow area versus radial distance from the borehole. The GRT model collapses to a 1D, radial, and spherical advection dispersion equation (ADE) for integer flow dimensions of 1, 2, and 3, respectively. And, the model also transforms to sub-linear, sub-radial, sub-spherical and eventually transform to super-spherical transport model for non-integer flow dimension, n of 0 < n < 1, 1 < n < 2, 2 < n < 3 and n >3 respectively. Non-integer flow dimensions, especially sub-radial, are commonly reported from pumping tests in …

Manifoldlike Causal Sets, Miremad Aghili Jan 2019

Manifoldlike Causal Sets, Miremad Aghili

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The content of this dissertation is written in a way to answer the important question of manifold likeness of causal sets. This problem has importance in the sense that in the continuum limit and in the case one finds a formalism for the sum over histories, the result requires to be embeddable in a manifold to be able to reproduce General Relativity. In what follows I will use the distribution of path length in a causal set to assign a measure for manifold likeness of causal sets to eliminate the dominance of nonmanifold like causal sets. The distribution of interval …

Advanced Analysis Of Compounds Of Toxicological Importance By Ice Concentration Linked With Extractive Stirrer (Icecles) Gc-Ms And Rp-Hplc-Esi-Ms-Ms, Joseph K. Dzisam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cyanide and nitrosoamines (NAs) are ubiquitous compounds, found in our food and water, either by natural process or through man-made activities. The toxicity of cyanide is exerted by its ability to inhibit metalloenzymes such as cytochrome c oxidase, causing concomitant cascades of biochemical effects such as lactic acidosis, inhibition of ATP production, respiratory seizure, and potential death. Nitrosoamines, on the other hand, undergo biotransformation (metabolic activation in cytochrome P450) in the body to produce unstable intermediates that alkylate DNA, causing mutations, and leading to carcinogenesis. In order to further the advancement of a promising cyanide, cobinamide (Cbi), an LC-MS-MS method …

Diversifying Cornfields By Interseeding Cover Crops: Practical Implications And The Response Of Invertebrate Communities, Michael Bredeson Jan 2019

Diversifying Cornfields By Interseeding Cover Crops: Practical Implications And The Response Of Invertebrate Communities, Michael Bredeson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The lack of suitable habitat conditions for beneficial organisms in simplified agroecosystems leads to unstable invertebrate communities and overreliance on chemical control of herbivores. It is possible to manage pest populations without agrichemicals by manipulating farmland so that herbivores are impaired by plant-driven bottom-up and enemy-driven top-down antagonisms. Interseeding cover crops between established crop rows is a method used by farmers to improve habitat suitability for natural enemies and hinder host-finding, feeding and movement by herbivores. Here I address three important research gaps related to interseeding cover crops. A calcium carbonate seed coating, used to improve seed-broadcasting efficiency, was tested …

This study introduces a new Natural Language Generation (NLG) task – Unit Claim Identification. The task aims to extract every piece of verifiable information from a headline. The Unit Claim identification has applications in other domains; such as fact-checking where the identification of each verifiable information from a check-worthy statement can lead to an effective fact-check. Moreover, the extracting of the unit claims from headlines can identify a misleading news article, by mapping evidence from contents. For addressing the unit claim identification problem, we outlined a set of guidelines for data annotation, arranged in-house training for the annotators and obtained …

Probing Atypical Noncovalent Interactions Using Electronic Structure Theory, Katelyn Mae Dreux Jan 2019

Probing Atypical Noncovalent Interactions Using Electronic Structure Theory, Katelyn Mae Dreux

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Some of the most important topics in modern chemistry involve noncovalent interactions in a variety of ways, from pharmacological processes to materials design. Due to the comparatively weak nature of these interactions, they can be difficult to investigate experimentally. Beyond what might be considered the ‘typical’ noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding or London dispersion, there are less well known noncovalent interactions such as coordinate covalent, dihydrogen, and nonconventional hydrogen bonding, which have been the focus of much of this research. Through the use of electronic structure theory, fundamental information about the structure, energetics, and molecular properties of noncovalently bound …
