The Chromatic Sum And Efficient Tree Algorithms, Ewa Kubicka

In Chapter I this concept is introduced. It is shown that computing the chromatic sum is NP-complete. For every natural k the smallest tree which needs k colors to attain its chromatic sum is constructed. It is demonstrated that asymptotically, for each k, almost all trees require more than k colors to achieve their chromatic sums. Also a linear algorithm for a single tree is presented.

Student understanding of selected calculus concepts as developed through use of a Cartesian coordinate graphical representation system were investigated. Subjects (N = 163) enrolled in first-semester calculus sections at Western Michigan University participated in one of four treatment conditions: Graphics (G), exposure to a computer-graphically-developed conceptual course; Graphics Plus (G+), exposure to the same course as G subjects plus provision of computer graphics software and related supplemental assignments; Standard 1 (S1), exposure to a graphically-developed, conceptual course; and Standard 2 (S2), exposure to a traditional skill-oriented course.

In this study the comparison of the methods used to calculate monomer reactivity ratios from experimental copolymer composition data is targeted.

For this purpose, nine samples of each of nine different concentrations of styrene-methyl methacrylate monomer mixtures were prepared. These mixtures were then polymerized for different times ranging from one to nine hours and the percent conversion to copolymer was determined.

The compositions of these copolymers were determined by their refractive index increments measured in two different solvents. Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy was also studied as a possible method to find copolymer compositions. Though this method has been used previously, UV …

Polyvinyl benzoate has benzene rings attached to the backbone chain, therefore is hard and rigid. This is a characteristic which has a large application area. However previous studies in polymerizing vinyl benzoate with bulk and solution polymerizations reported low yields and troublesome crosslinking, which has limited its application. Three robust rank procedures are considered to test the multivariate linear hypothesis HBK = 0. In the least squares setting, the Lawley-Hotelling trace criterion provides a UMP when the covariance structure is known. Our work reflects the theoretical structure of the Lawley-Hotelling test with robust rank analogues.

The Lawley-Hotelling test has an asymptotic chi-square distribution when the covariance structure is estimated. The maximum concurrent flow (MCFP) is a generalized commodity flow problem, where every pair of entities can send and receive flow Ma85 , BM86 , MS86 . We develop efficient labeling algorithms to solve the MCFP. We explore the combinatorial structure of the MCFP and show that the problem of associating costs (distances) to the edges so as to maximize the minimum cost of routing the concurrent flow is the dual of the MCFP. This duality covers max-flow min-cut theorem as a special case. Applications in packet switched networks At81 and cluster analysis Ma86 are discussed.

Past literature concerning drug combination studies is reviewed. This literature has both biological and statistical origins. The justification of the logit transformation for dichotomous responses in a linear models framework is made by observing its similarities to models proposed by others. Using the logistic linear model, optimal experimental designs are derived. Methods for obtaining parameter estimates are discussed as are diagnostic techniques for logistic regression. Two new robust techniques for logistic regression are proposed and compared to a robust technique suggested in the literature via Monte Carlo simulation. This work provides solid asymptotic representations, sharp error bounds and stable recurrence methods (both three term and two dimensional) for the Jacobi moments. These moments are currently used in several areas of numerical analysis (numerical integration, integral equations and boundary value problems).

A powerful representation theorem, due to H. Gingold, which uses the Jacobi moments is extended and analyzed. Applications of this theorem to multi-turning point problems and several other areas are given.

The connectivity of a graph G is the minimum number of vertices in G whose deletion produces a disconnected or trivial graph, while the edge-connectivity of G is the minimum number of edges having this property. In this dissertation several generalizations and variations of these two parameters are introduced and studied.

Chapter I is an overview to the history of connectivity and provides a background for the chapters that follow. In Chapter II major n-connected subgraphs are introduced. Through this concept, the connectivities (of subgraphs) that are most representative in a given graph are studied.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which acid precipitation contributes acidity and heavy metals to lake environments. Asylum and Bonnie Castle Lakes, both located in the western portion of Kalamazoo County, served as the study sites. Precipitation samples were also taken at a site close to both lakes. Using the Hach Colorimeter, a preliminary study was undertaken to determine concentrations of the major cations (H('+), NH(,4)('+), K('+) and Ca('2+)), and major anions (NO(,3)('-), SO(,4)('2-), and PO(,4)('3-)). This report describes the synthesis of naphthalene-2,3-dialdehyde, and an analytical method for determining its purity by thin layer chromatography. Subsequently, the dialdehyde was condensed with various cyclic ketones to generate a series of polymethylene bridged naphthotropones. It was found that planarity and aromaticity increase with the size of the methylene bridge, although, the bridge must contain six or more methylene groups for the latter to be true. The claim for aromaticity is supported by NMR and IR data, which indicates the positive charge for a perchlorate cation salt is delocalized over the naphthalene and tropone ring system. The genus of a design (BIBD or PBIBD) is defined to be the genus of its corresponding hypergraph (objects as vertices, blocks as edges); that is, the genus of the bipartite graph associated with the hypergraph in a natural way. The Euler formula is used to establish a lower bound (gamma) for the genus of a block design. An imbedding of the design of the surface of genus (gamma) is then described by a voltage hypergraph or voltage graph. Use of the lower bound formula leads to a characterization of planar BIBDs.
