The purpose of this thesis was to further study geophysical anomalies discovered and mapped by Shank (2013) at the Stevenson Cemetery, Greene County, Ohio, with the goal of delineating any resistivity anomaly possibly associated with suspected, but unmarked, burial sites. The previous study delineated geophysical anomalies using electromagnetic (EM), magnetic, and ground penetrating radar surveys, which were interpreted to represent unmarked burial sites. A hand-drawn map from the 1950’s shows a pattern of gravesites across this area, and three aligned subtle depressions are present at the surface in the study area. The focus of this study was to expand the …

Supersonic Euler And Magnetohydrodynamic Flow Past Cones, Ian C. Holloway

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This work contains the derivation and type analysis of the conical Euler and Ideal Magnetohydrodynamic equations. The 3 dimensional Euler equations and the Ideal MHD equations with Powell source terms, subject to the assumption that the solution is conically invariant, are projected onto a unit sphere using tools from tensor calculus. Conical flows provide valuable insight into supersonic and hypersonic flow past bodies, but are simpler to analyze and solve numerically. Previously, work has been done on conical inviscid flows governed by the compressible Euler equations with great success. It is known that some flight regimes involve flows of ionized …

A fourth of the world’s population lack access to safe water, thus the need for a more effective water treatment is imperative. Interest in silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has grown in the last decade. Unlike chlorine, AgNPs do not form disinfection by products (DBPs), making them a prime candidate for drinking water treatment. The main aim of this study was to compare the antibacterial activity of electrochemical silver nanoparticles (eAgNPs-f) of ~5 nm in diameter against well-established pathogens: Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella variicola (K. variicola), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) to chlorine and Ag+ for drinking water. This was achieved …

The wisdom of the crowd is a well-known example of collective intelligence wherein an aggregated judgment of a group of individuals is superior to that of an individual. The aggregated judgment is surprisingly accurate for predicting the outcome of a range of tasks from geopolitical forecasting to the stock price prediction. Recent research has shown that participants' previous performance data contributes to the identification of a subset of participants that can collectively predict an accurate outcome. In the absence of such performance data, researchers have explored the role of human-perceived diversity, i.e., whether a human considers a crowd as a …

Conventional ultra-high sensitivity detectors in the millimeter-wave range are usually cooled as their own thermal noise at room temperature would mask the weak received radiation. The need for cryogenic systems increases the cost and complexity of the instruments, hindering the development of, among others, airborne and space applications. In this work, the nonlinear parametric upconversion of millimeter-wave radiation to the optical domain inside high-quality (Q) lithium niobate whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators is proposed for ultra-low noise detection. We experimentally demonstrate coherent upconversion of millimeter-wave signals to a 1550 nm telecom carrier, with a photon conversion efficiency surpassing the state-of-the-art by …

The Internet of Things (IoT) plays an ever-increasing role in enabling smart city applications. An ontology-based semantic approach can help improve interoperability between a variety of IoT-generated as well as complementary data needed to drive these applications. While multiple ontology catalogs exist, using them for IoT and smart city applications require significant amount of work. In this paper, we demonstrate how can ontology catalogs be more effectively used to design and develop smart city applications? We consider four ontology catalogs that are relevant for IoT and smart cities: 1) READY4SmartCities; 2) linked open vocabulary (LOV); 3) OpenSensingCity (OSC); and 4) …

Poster: Privacy-Preserving Boosting With Random Linear Classifiers, Sagar Sharma, Keke Chen

Kno.e.sis Publications

We propose SecureBoost, a privacy-preserving predictive modeling framework, that allows service providers (SPs) to build powerful boosting models over encrypted or randomly masked user submit- ted data. SecureBoost uses random linear classifiers (RLCs) as the base classifiers. A Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) manages keys and assists the SP’s processing to reduce the complexity of the protocol constructions. The SP learns only the base models (i.e., RLCs) and the CSP learns only the weights of the base models and a limited leakage function. This separated parameter holding avoids any party from abusing the final model or conducting model-based attacks. We evaluate …

Discussion forums provide a channel for students to engage with peers and course material outside of class, accessible even to commuter and nontraditional populations. Forums can build classroom community and aid learning, but students do not always take up these tools. We use network analysis to compare three semesters of forum logs from an introductory calculus-based physics course. The networks show dense structures of collaboration that differ significantly between semesters, even though aggregate participation statistics remain steady. After characterizing network structure for each semester, we correlate students’ centrality—a numeric measure of network position—with final course grade. Finally, we use a …

Gender gaps on the most widely used conceptual inventories created by physics education researchers have been extensively studied. Most of the research exploring the consistent gender gaps has been performed at the student level using the total evaluation score; less research has been performed examining these assessments at the item level and this research has been predominately restricted to the Force Concept Inventory (FCI). Many studies have identified subsets of FCI items as unfair to either men or women. An item is fair if men and women of equal ability in conceptual physics score equally on the item. This study …

Pharmaflights: Fragment Based Drug Discovery Based On Chalcones With A 3,4,5-Trimethoxy Substitution On Ring B., Cody Fourman

The University Honors Program

The 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl motif is a common structural feature of a number of natural occurring antimitotic agents, especially those capable interacting with microtubules such as the cis-stilbene, combrestatin A-4. Chalcones possessing this pharmacophore have likewise been demonstrated to exhibit a diverse range of biological actions including anticancer, anti-invasive, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. As part of an experiential learning experience in academic drug discovery termed WSU PharmaFlights, so-called flights of 6-10 molecules based on a particular biologically relevant structural pattern on the privileged chalcone scaffold are to be designed, synthesized, and spectroscopically characterized as a starting point for lead-development with potential biological …

Modeling And Visualization Of Uncertainty-Aware Geometries Using Multi-Variate Normal Distributions, Christina Gillman, Thomas Wischgoll, Bernd Hamann, James Ahrens

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Many applications are dealing with geometric data that are affected by uncertainty. It is important to analyze, visualize, and understand the properties of uncertain geometry. We present a methodology to model uncertain geometry based on multi-variate normal distributions. In addition, we propose a visualization technique to represent a hull for uncertain geometry capturing a user-defined percentage of the underlying uncertain geometry. To show the effectiveness of our approach, we have modeled and visualized uncertain datasets from different applications.
