Increasing Expression Of Civic-Engagement Values By Students In A Service-Learning Chemistry Course, Audrey E. Mcgowin, Rebecca Teed

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A service-learning course at a midsized Midwestern research university was modified over a period of six years to integrate best-practice pedagogies that have been shown to increase civic engagement by students. Best-practice pedagogies included regular interaction with community partner(s), significant time spent on the service activity, and regular reflection (written and verbal) on the implications of the service activity. Besides water quality monitoring, students performed private well water analysis, wrote multiple formal reflection papers, and presented a public talk on the results of their project that included significant discussion time with community partners. Authentic expression of civic engagement values was …

This report describes the results of research performed with funds from the Sture Fredrik Anliot Grant Fund granted in March 2016 and the Wright State University College of Science and Mathematics. The title of the grant was “Lytle Creek and Indian Run Sediment and Water Pollution Assessment” and its primary aim was to identify and measure pollutants that could be causing a lack of biodiversity in Lytle Creek in Wilmington, OH. The project formed the basis of Amira Alsenbel’s Masters in Chemistry thesis research.

These slides are from my presentation at Green(e) Fest 2016 “Make Every Day Earth Day,” Glen Helen Association Annual Meeting. This is a summary of research results obtained by 50+ students enrolled in my Service-Learning Intensive Environmental Chemistry course at Wright State University. It includes recommendations to Glen Helen and the Village of Yellow Springs by the students regarding findings of high E. coli in stormwater runoff, high nitrate levels in groundwater, and violations of a foundry’s permit to discharge into Glen Helen.

Service Learning Intensive (SVI) - a teaching and learning pedagogy that engages faculty, students, and community members in a partnership to achieve academic learning objectives, meet community needs, promote civic responsibility, and reflect on the learning experience.

More specifically, the objectives for this course are for students to:

  • Apply environmental chemistry concepts learned in the classroom to the interpretation environmental analysis results
  • Use Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) through the use of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and EPA methods for the analysis of metals, anions, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, conductivity, ammonia, and turbidity
  • Follow up on previous years’ results showing elevated …

This report describes the results of research performed with funds from the Sture Fredrik Anliot Grant Fund granted in March 2015. The primary aim of the project was to identify and measure various stormwater pollutant inputs to Yellow Springs Creek and Birch Creek into Glen Helen Nature Preserve and then into the Little Miami River in Greene County, Ohio from Spring 2015 to Winter 2016.

In order to better understand pollutant flow into Glen Helen and subsequently into the Little Miami River, three different types of samples were taken. One type of sample was a “grab” sample taken under normal …
