Why 70/100 Is Satisfactory? Why Five Letter Grades? Why Other Academic Conventions?, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Why 70/100 Is Satisfactory? Why Five Letter Grades? Why Other Academic Conventions?, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Why 70/100 is usually a threshold for a student's satisfactory performance? Why there are usually only five letter grades? Why the usual arrangement of research, teaching, and service is 40-40-20? We show that all these arrangements -- and other similar academic arrangements -- can be explained by two ideas: the Laplace Indeterminacy Principle and the seven plus minus two law.
Blessings, God, Sacrifices: Possible Rational Explanations Of Biblical Ideas, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Blessings, God, Sacrifices: Possible Rational Explanations Of Biblical Ideas, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In this paper, we show that many seemingly irrational Biblical ideas can actually be rationally interpreted: that God is everywhere, that we can only say what God is not, that God's name is holy, why cannot you bless as many people as you want, etc. We do not insist on our interpretations, there probably are many others, our sole objective was to show that many Biblical ideas can be rationally explained.

How To Gauge Students' Ability To Collaborate?, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Usually, we mostly gauge individual students' skills. However, in the modern world, problems are rarely solved by individuals, it is usually a group effort. So, to make sure that students are successful, we also need to gauge their ability to collaborate. In this paper, we describe when it is possible to gauge the students' ability to collaborate; in situations when such a determination is possible, we explain how exactly we can estimate these abilities.
Hardware For Quantized Mixed-Precision Deep Neural Networks, Andres Rios
Hardware For Quantized Mixed-Precision Deep Neural Networks, Andres Rios
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Recently, there has been a push to perform deep learning (DL) computations on the edge rather than the cloud due to latency, network connectivity, energy consumption, and privacy issues. However, state-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs) require vast amounts of computational power, data, and energyâ??resources that are limited on edge devices. This limitation has brought the need to design domain-specific architectures (DSAs) that implement DL-specific hardware optimizations. Traditionally DNNs have run on 32-bit floating-point numbers; however, a body of research has shown that DNNs are surprisingly robust and do not require all 32 bits. Instead, using quantization, networks can run on …
Simultaneous Forecasting Of Yield Curves For Multiple Zero-Coupon Bonds Using The Heath-Jarrow-Morton Model, Ebenezer Nkum
Simultaneous Forecasting Of Yield Curves For Multiple Zero-Coupon Bonds Using The Heath-Jarrow-Morton Model, Ebenezer Nkum
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Market diversification is a strategy according to which a company seeks growth by addingproducts and markets that are in a certain sense "uncorrelated" to its existing products and markets. Bonds play a major role in a well-balanced diversified portfolio because of their low correlation to other asset classes. While the correlations vary widely over time, bonds are not highly correlated with any other asset classes. Even in the simplest diversified portfolio, bonds can reduce volatility due to their low or negative correlation with stocks. Because companies can create robust diversified portfolios with bonds it is imperative that different bonds are …
Non-Invasive In-Vitro Glucose Monitoring Using Optical Sensor And Machine Learning Techniques For Diabetes Applications, Maryamsadat Shokrekhodaei
Non-Invasive In-Vitro Glucose Monitoring Using Optical Sensor And Machine Learning Techniques For Diabetes Applications, Maryamsadat Shokrekhodaei
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Diabetes is a major public health challenge affecting more than 451 million people. Physiological and experimental factors influence the accuracy of non-invasive glucose monitoring, and these need to be addressed before replacing the finger prick method with a non-invasive glucose measurement technique. Also, the suitable employment of machine learning techniques on experimental data can significantly improve the accuracy of glucose predictions.
This work includes the design, development, testing and data analysis of an optical based sensor for glucose measurements. The feasibility of non-invasive measurement of glucose within aqueous solutions that assimilate the composition of human blood plasma is investigated. The …
Towards Reinforcement Learning Driven Mesh Adaptivity For Second Order Elliptic Problems, Augustine Twumasi
Towards Reinforcement Learning Driven Mesh Adaptivity For Second Order Elliptic Problems, Augustine Twumasi
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Adaptive mesh refinement techniques have become an indispensable tool in achieving accurate and efficiently computed solutions to problems which require impractically fine uniform meshes to obtain an accurate approximation. The adaptive algorithm involves a recursive application of SOLVE-ESTIMATE-MARK-REFINE steps where in particular the step `ESTIMATE' involves computing a posteriori error estimator based on only the numerical solution and the data of the problem. Over the years, several a posteriori error estimators have been developed and successfully applied but often times, the choice of estimator is ill suited for the problem at hand. In this research, we present two estimators namely …
Modeling The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Active Regions On The Sun Using Deep Neural Networks, Godwill Amankwa
Modeling The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Active Regions On The Sun Using Deep Neural Networks, Godwill Amankwa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Solar active regions are areas on the Sun's surface that have especially strong magnetic fields. Several phenomena that can have significant negative effects on technology and subsequently on human life, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are often associated with active regions.Since the physical phenomena underlying the evolution of active regions are still poorly understood, the accurate prediction of solar flares and coronal mass ejections remains an open problem.
Extracting insights from the available datasets of solar activity that can lead to a better understanding of solar active regions has been an important research goal at the …
Associations Between Exposure To Air Pollution After A Dust Event And Hospitalizations., Estrella De Jesus Herrera-Molina
Associations Between Exposure To Air Pollution After A Dust Event And Hospitalizations., Estrella De Jesus Herrera-Molina
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Southwestern region has been identified as one of the most persistent dust producing regions of North America. Exposure to inhalable particulate matter (PM10) originating from desertic landscape during dust events/dust exposures (DEs) can reach hazardous levels. El Paso, Texas’s ambient air has reached hazardous levels of PM10 above 4000 μg/m3 with near zero visibility due to these natural events. There are very few prior studies in the southwestern United States pertaining to the associations between exposure to atmospheric aerosol after DEs and hospitalizations, nor are there many epidemiological studies globally in dusty environments where most of the atmospheric aerosol …
An Approach To Predicting Performance Of Sparse Computations On Nvidia Gpus, Rogelio Long
An Approach To Predicting Performance Of Sparse Computations On Nvidia Gpus, Rogelio Long
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Sparse problems arise from a variety of applications, from scientific simulations to graph analytics. Traditional HPC systems have failed to effectively provide high bandwidth for sparse problems. This limitation is primarily because of the nature of sparse computations and their irregular memory access patterns. We predict the performance of sparse computations given an input matrix and GPU hardware characteristics. This prediction is done by identifying hardware bottlenecks in modern NVIDIA GPUs using roofline trajectory models. Roofline trajectory models give us insight into the performance by simultaneously showing us the effects of strong and weak scaling. We then create regression models for …

Studies Of The Planetary Boundary Layer And Their Impact On Air Pollution In A Semi-Arid Region With Complex Terrain, Nakul Nitin Karle
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The adjacent cities of El Paso-Juárez, located in the Rio Grande Rift Valley and surrounded by complex mountainous terrain, have undergone rapid urbanization and industrial growth in the last few decades, accompanied by increasing substandard air quality episodes. Although numerous air quality studies were conducted in this semi-arid region in the past, none focused extensively on the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) contribution and impact on air pollutant concentrations. In this work, both the high and low ozone episodes from 2015 to 2020 were examined. Both modeling and experimental data of the PBL height (PBLH) were obtained and related to atmospheric …
Synthesis And Study Of F-Block Complexes Containing Metal-Arene Interactions, Jesse Murillo
Synthesis And Study Of F-Block Complexes Containing Metal-Arene Interactions, Jesse Murillo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The f-block elements are of great interest due to the under explored nature of their chemical bonding interactions and their unique magnetic and electronic properties. For the 5f-orbital elements, such as uranium, the f-orbitals are more readily available for bonding than the contracted, core like, 4f-orbitals of the lanthanides. This makes uranium complexes informative probes into the nature of f-(p/d/f) bonding interactions. Recently, it has been shown that a growing subset of complexes possessing supported uranium-arene interactions have the capability to stabilize unusually low valent U(II) molecular species and support novel catalytic activity. In our laboratory, we have begun to …
Study Of Weakly Bound Cluster Anions Using Self Interaction Corrected Density Functional Scheme, Peter Obinna Ufondu
Study Of Weakly Bound Cluster Anions Using Self Interaction Corrected Density Functional Scheme, Peter Obinna Ufondu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Kohn–Sham formulation of density functional theory (DFT) is a widely used quantum mechanical theory to study chemical and materials properties. The practical application of DFT requires an approximation to the exchange–correlation (XC) functional. These approximations suffer from self-interaction errors due to the incomplete cancellation of the self-Coulomb energy with the approximate self-exchange and correlation energy for one-electron densities. Systems with weakly-bound electrons impose great challenges to semi-local density functional approximations. We use recently developed local scaled self-interaction correction (LSIC) by Zope et al and the Perdew-Zunger SIC method using the Fermi-Löwdin orbitals to calculate the vertical detachment energies (VDEs) …
Small Commercial And Industrial Electricity Consumption In Las Cruces, New Mexico, Andrew Taylor Yurachek
Small Commercial And Industrial Electricity Consumption In Las Cruces, New Mexico, Andrew Taylor Yurachek
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Research examining small commercial and industrial electricity usage patterns have historically received less attention than residential electricity consumption patterns. This study examines electricity as an input to commercial and industrial production in Las Cruces, New Mexico using annual frequency data from 1978 to 2018. Those data examined include labor, per capita personal income, price measures for electricity and natural gas, and weather variables. The long-run and short-run elasticities of the data are then estimated using an autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL). In the long run, CIS customers in Las Cruces respond to natural gas a complimentary good, and the derived-demand …

Computational modeling of biological macromolecules through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is becoming increasingly useful to interpret the experimental results and guide the future experiments. Over the last decade, MD simulations have become much more powerful and accessible due to advancements in fields of structural biology, computer science and integrated chip design. In this Thesis, I utilize different MD simulation techniques to model interaction of and antiviral mechanisms. Within the framework of nucleic acid modelling, we describe first dynamics of small circular single stranded nucleic acids and highlight key dynamical differences of backbone behavior in solution between DNA and RNA and …
Magnesiothermic Combustion Synthesis Of Nanocrystalline Silicon And Oxidation Kinetics Of Magnesium Particles, Sergio Cordova
Magnesiothermic Combustion Synthesis Of Nanocrystalline Silicon And Oxidation Kinetics Of Magnesium Particles, Sergio Cordova
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Magnesium (Mg) is a well-known reduction agent in metallurgy (more specifically, in metallothermy). Recently, magnesiothermic reduction of oxides has been used in self-propagating high-temperature synThesis (SHS) of advanced materials such as ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTC). The magnesiothermic SHS has also been used for the conversion of silica (SiO2) to silicon-based materials for thermoelectric applications. However, since oxidation of Mg releases a lot of heat, the direct use of it as the reduction agent leads to excessively high temperatures and undesirable sintering of the products. We have proposed to use magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) instead of Mg in the SHS of nanostructured silicon. …
Articulating The Importance Of Broader Relevance In Cures: From Definition To Actualization, Nikki T. Donegan
Articulating The Importance Of Broader Relevance In Cures: From Definition To Actualization, Nikki T. Donegan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have emerged as a means to foster student' scientific reasoning, promote positive attitudes and motivations toward research, and increase persistence in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. In contrast to prescriptive laboratories, students enrolled in CUREs employ techniques and skills to collaboratively and iteratively address novel questions of broad relevance to audiences beyond the scope of the course itself. While many of the core components of CUREs are perceived to be relatively straightforward, definitionally-speaking, this latter dimension of broader relevance has, in contrast, remained largely ill-defined. In the series of studies presented herein, …
Structural Microheterogeneity In Ionic Liquid/Solvent Mixtures Influenced By Solvent Polarity And Ion Concentration, Babatunde Falola
Structural Microheterogeneity In Ionic Liquid/Solvent Mixtures Influenced By Solvent Polarity And Ion Concentration, Babatunde Falola
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) and organic solvent mixtures, in supercapacitors, have desirable properties in comparison to conventional electrolytes. We studied the nanostructural properties of mixtures of the RTIL: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethyl sulfonyl) imide (abbreviated to BMIM+[TSI]-), with organic solvents: acetonitrile, dichloromethane, benzene, toluene, and tetrahydrofuran. The mass percentage at which macroscopic phase separation is visible in each RTIL and solvent mixture was determined by slowly increasing the solvent concentration. Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements, at RTIL mass percentage lower than the phase separation concentrations, were carried out to determine whether nanoheterogeneity is presently leading up to macroscopic phase separation. …

Specifically, chapter 2 explores a seismic sensorâ??s ability to detect opera in Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN, using a misfit power spectral density detector. Chapter 3 outlines work …
Understanding The Chemical Weathering Rate And Element Mobility Of Soils: Using U-Series, Nd-Sr Isotopes Ree And Quantum Chemistry Computational Simulation, Jiye Guo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Soil played as the central role in the interaction of biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere and is the heart of earth's critical zone study. The weathering and element mobility of soils have drawn considerable attention in soil studies since the complexity of these processes and the critical influence towards the earth and humanity, e.g., the global carbon cycles and fertilization. However, the interaction between soils and various factors including precipitation, bedrock ages, altitude is not well understood. Basse-Terre Island at French Guadeloupe, a small volcanic tropical island that has steep environmental gradients of bedrock ages, topography and precipitation, can be …

Synthesis Of Fullerene Derivatives For Diverse Applications: From Catalysis To Photovoltaics, Olivia Fernandez-Delgado
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
AbstractFullerene functionalization has enabled the improvement in their solubility, optoelectronic, semiconductive, chemical and physical properties that allow their use in several fields such as photovoltaics, catalysis and for biological applications. Their good electron transporting properties have been widely studied in perovskite solar cell (PSC) devices and more recently, there have been more articles focused specifically on the molecular interactions of the fullerene functional groups with the perovskite layer which has allowed to obtain high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 25.5%. On the other hand, fullerenes are beginning to be studied as molecular catalysts for water splitting electrocatalytic processes, resulting in …

Sawtooth-Based Chromate Multiferroic - Insight Into Structure And Magnetism, Hector Cein Mandujano
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The coexistence of two order parameters is a particular occurrence in bulk single-phase materials. Such materials possessing (anti)ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, and ferroelasticity are known as multiferroics. In this work we revisit BeCr2O4, which is one of the oldest material to be studied in this context. Cr3+ occupies octahedral 4a site and Be2+ occupies tetrahedral 4c site in this compound, forming a close packing structure with a 90° and 138° Cr-O-Cr bonds allowing magnetic superexchange interactions. In the present work, BeCr2O4 powder was prepared using solid-state reaction method and the crystal structure was studied in detail using laboratory and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. …

A single variation in the genetic sequence within the DNA of an organism could easily lead to beneficial, detrimental or neutral effects. Most often than not, these effects are detrimental than beneficial. While many biomedical and bioinformatics studies have been conducted to determine the genetic cause of prostate cancer (PrCa) which is still the second leading cause of cancer related death among men in the United States. An appreciable effort in statistical bioinformatics researches has been directed towards this aim. Through statistical analyses of a set of whole exome sequencing data from patients with PrCa obtained via The Cancer Genome …
Fast Magnetic Resonance Image Reconstruction With Deep Learning Using An Efficientnet Encoder, Tahsin Rahman
Fast Magnetic Resonance Image Reconstruction With Deep Learning Using An Efficientnet Encoder, Tahsin Rahman
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis aims to develop an efficient, deep network based method for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) acceleration through undersampled MR image reconstruction. Deep Neural Networks, particularly Deep Convolutional Networks, have been demonstrated to be highly effective in a wide variety of computer vision tasks, including MRI reconstruction. However, modern highly efficient encoder structures, such as the EfficientNet can potentially reduce reconstruction times further while improving reconstruction quality. To that end, we have developed a multi-channel U-Net MRI reconstruction network which uses an EfficientNet encoder and a custom asymmetric. The network was trained and tested using 5x undersampled multi-channel brain MR …
Selecting Robust Strategies When Players Do Not Know Exactly What Game They Are Playing, Oscar Samuel Veliz
Selecting Robust Strategies When Players Do Not Know Exactly What Game They Are Playing, Oscar Samuel Veliz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Game theory is a tool for modeling multi-agent decision problems and has been used to great success in modeling and simulating problems such as poker, security, and trading agents. However, many real games are extremely large and complex with multiple agent interactions. One approach for solving these games is to use abstraction techniques to shrink the game to a form that can be solved by removing details and translating a solution back to the original. However, abstraction introduces error into the model. This research studies ways to analyze games, abstractions, and strategies that are robust to noise in the game.

What Is The Uncertainty Of The Result Of Data Processing: Fuzzy Analogue Of The Central Limit Theorem, Julio C. Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
It is known that, due to the Central Limit Theorem, the probability distribution of the uncertainty of the result of data processing is, in general, close to Gaussian -- or to a distribution from a somewhat more general class known as infinitely divisible. We show that a similar result holds in the fuzzy case: namely, the membership function describing the uncertainty of the result of data processing is, in general, close to Gaussian -- or to a membership function from an explicitly described more general class.

"Negative" Results -- When The Measured Quantity Is Outside The Sensor's Range -- Can Help Data Processing, Jonatan Contreras, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Martine Ceberio
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many real-life situations, we know the general form of the dependence y = f(x, c1, ..., cm) between physical quantities, but the values need to be determined experimentally, based on the results of measuring x and y. In some cases, we do not get any result of measuring y since the actual value is outside the range of the measuring instrument. Usually, such cases are ignored. In this paper, we show that taking these cases into account can help data processing -- by improving the accuracy of our estimates of ci and thus, …

So How To Make Group Decisions? Arrow's Impossibility Theorem 70 Years After, Hung T. Nguyen, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In 1951, Kenneth Arrow proved that it is not possible to have a group decision making procedure that satisfies reasonable requirements like fairness. From the theoretical viewpoint, this is a great result -- well-deserving the Nobel Prize that was awarded to Professor Arrow. However, from the practical viewpoint, the question remains -- so how should we make group decisions? A usual way to solve this problem is to provide some reasonable heuristic ideas, but the problem is that different seemingly reasonable idea often lead to different group decision -- this is known, e.g., for different voting schemes. In this paper, …
