How can we bridge the gap between industry and academia? How can we make them collaborate more effectively? In this essay, we try to come up with answers to these important questions.
Towards A Psychologically Natural Relation Between Colors And Fuzzy Degrees, Victor L. Timchenko, Yuriy P. Kondratenko, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong
Towards A Psychologically Natural Relation Between Colors And Fuzzy Degrees, Victor L. Timchenko, Yuriy P. Kondratenko, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
A natural way to speed up computations -- in particular, computations that involve processing fuzzy data -- is to use the fastest possible communication medium: light. Light consists of components of different color. So, if we use optical color computations to process fuzzy data, we need to associate fuzzy degrees with colors. One of the main features -- and of the main advantages -- of fuzzy technique is that the corresponding data has intuitive natural meaning: this data comes from words from natural language. It is desirable to preserve this naturalness as much as possible. In particular, it is desirable …
Why Attitudes Are Usually Mutual: A Possible Mathematical Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Attitudes Are Usually Mutual: A Possible Mathematical Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In this paper, we provide a possible mathematical explanation of why people's attitude to each other is usually mutual: we usually have good attitude who those who have good feelings towards us, and we usually have negative attitudes towards those who have negative feelings towards, Several mathematical explanations of this mutuality have been proposed, but they are based on specific approximate mathematical models of human (and animal) interaction. It is desirable to have a solid mathematical explanation that would not depend on such approximate models. In this paper, we show that a recent mathematical result about relation algebras can lead …
How To Select A Model If We Know Probabilities With Interval Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich
How To Select A Model If We Know Probabilities With Interval Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Purpose: When we know the probability of each model, a natural idea is to select the most probable model. However, in many practical situations, we do not know the exact values of these probabilities, we only know intervals that contain these values. In such situations, a natural idea is to select some probabilities from these intervals and to select a model with the largest selected probabilities. The purpose of this study is to decide how to most adequately select these probabilities.
Design/methodology/approach: We want the probability-selection method to preserve independence: If, according to the probability intervals, the two …
If Everything Is A Matter Of Degree, Why Do Crisp Techniques Often Work Better?, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
If Everything Is A Matter Of Degree, Why Do Crisp Techniques Often Work Better?, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Numerous examples from different application domain confirm the statement of Lotfi Zadeh -- that everything is a matter of degree. Because of this, one would expect that in most -- if not all -- practical situations taking these degrees into account would lead to more effective control, more effective prediction, etc. In practice, while in many cases, this indeed happens, in many other cases, "crisp" methods -- methods that do not take these degrees into account -- work better. In this paper, we provide two possible explanations for this discrepancy: an objective one -- explaining that the optimal (best-fit) model …

Interdisciplinary Approach To Understanding Stakeholder Reasoning And Decision-Making For Water, Katalina Salas
Interdisciplinary Approach To Understanding Stakeholder Reasoning And Decision-Making For Water, Katalina Salas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
On a global scale, humanity is compelled to address complex or â??wickedâ?? resource-related issues in the face of accelerating environmental change. In our work, we use the term wicked problem to refer to an issue that has multiple potential solutions and involves various stakeholders. The paths to reach resource sustainability under environmental uncertainty are difficult to identify, plausible outcomes remain uncertain, and tradeoffs required by any path chosen are challenging to understand. Environmental sustainability issues may involve perspectives from multiple stakeholders (i.e., scientists, policymakers, community members, and industry), often leading to conflicting interests and cultural misalignments that trigger the need …

Likewise, to guarantee safety conditions, reduce costs, and facilitate operational logistics, space missions must reduce their …
Density Functional Theory Study Of Dopant Incorporation Into Gamma-Uo3, Nicholas James Wilson
Density Functional Theory Study Of Dopant Incorporation Into Gamma-Uo3, Nicholas James Wilson
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Uranium trioxide (UO3) is a stable uranium oxide found throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. The γ-UO3 phase is of particular interest as the most stable at ambient conditions. As such, the γ-UO3 structure was selected for a theoretical investigation into the incorporation of metal dopants for nuclear intentional forensics applications. The two lattice types of this phase, tetragonal (I41/amd) and orthorhombic (Fddd), were investigated and found to be energetically identical, and as such the smaller tetragonal structure was selected for doping. Three transition metal dopants (Cr, Fe, and Ni) were incorporated into the structure interstitially and substitutionally at a total …

Removal Of Nonylphenols From Water And Wastewater Using Alginate-Activated Carbon Beads, Angelica Araly Chacon
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been affecting water quality in recent years. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S EPA) defines CECs as toxic chemicals without regulatory status and with adversely impact on the wildlife and people. Among the CECs, nonylphenols (NPs) are frequently found in all water systems and are categorized as endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) due to their ability to mimic hormones causing reproductive and developmental effects in humans and animals. The main sources of discharge and distribution of NPs into the environment are wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which are not designed to remove them. …

Single-Index Multinomial Model For Analyzing Crime Data, Kwabena Gyamfi Duodu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
We develop a flexible single-index multinomial model for analyzing crime data. In additionto the number of crimes reported, the data also includes covariates such as location, time of day, weather, and other demographic factors. We provide an estimation algorithm and develop R code for the single-index multinomial model. Using simulations, we evaluate the performance of the proposed estimation algorithm. When applied to crime data, the single-index multinomial model provides important insights into crime trends and risk variables, assisting in the development of tailored crime prevention programs. Policymakers and law enforcement organizations can use the model's projections to more efficiently allocate …

Comparative Study Of Supervised Classification Techniques With A Modified Knn Algorithm, Noah Owusu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The goal of classification is to develop a model that can be used to accurately assign new observations to labeled classes based on the patterns learned from the training data. K-nearest Neighbors algorithm (KNN) is a popular and widely used algorithm for classification, however, its performance can be adversely affected by the presence of outliers in a dataset. In this study we have modified this existing KNN algorithm that can alleviate the effect of outliers in a dataset, thereby improving the performance of the KNN algorithm. We compared the performances of the Modified KNN method and the Existing KNN algorithm …

Layered evaporite sequences, cyclic, kilometer-thick deposits of salt, are among the most unusual and fascinating lithologies that geologists encounter. There is no recent analogue to their formation, and their ability to flow when subject to differential pressure makes them unique. Salt structures serve as sources for halite, bittern salts, metals, and hydrocarbons and can be used for storage of materials, including hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and nuclear waste. Basins in which layered evaporite sequences are deposited receive detrital input sporadically from adjacent areas, depositing inclusions of non-evaporite lithologies that are entrained when salt flows. These inclusions are exposed in a …

Design And Development Of Transition Metal-Based Electrocatalysts For Environmentally Friendly And Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reactions (Her), Navid Attarzadeh
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Hydrogen fuel is a clean energy source primarily because it emits no carbon dioxide (CO2). Sustainable energy alternatives have attracted the scientific community and policymakers as concerns over global warming and depletion of fossil fuels have increased significantly. Substituting H2 gas as a primary source for our daily energy consumption under the guideline of the hydrogen economy concept has not progressed as anticipated because of inadequate efficiency associated with the generation (electrolyzer) and utilization (fuel cell) devices. However, there are challenges associated with hydrogen that must be overcome for it to become a truly sustainable and widespread energy source. The …

Increasing The Efficiency And Accuracy Of Collective Intelligence Methods For Image Classification, Md Mahmudulla Hassan
Increasing The Efficiency And Accuracy Of Collective Intelligence Methods For Image Classification, Md Mahmudulla Hassan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Collective intelligence has emerged as a powerful methodology for annotating and classifying challenging data that pose difficulties for automated classifiers. It works by leveraging the concept of "wisdom of the crowds" which approximates a ground truth after aggregating experts' feedback and filtering out noise. However, challenges arise when certain applications, such as medical image classification, security threat detection, and financial fraud detection, demand accurate and reliable data annotation. The unreliability of experts due to inconsistent expertise and competencies, coupled with the associated cost and time-consuming judgment extraction, presents additional challenges.
Input aggregation is the process of consolidating and combining multiple …
The Ecological Effects Of Nitrogen Enrichment In Aridlands, Jennifer Holguin
The Ecological Effects Of Nitrogen Enrichment In Aridlands, Jennifer Holguin
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition is one of the most prominent factors driving global change. Across the globe, N deposition has driven major changes in terrestrial ecosystems, such as declines in plant biodiversity, enhanced exotic plant growth, and changes to biogeochemical processes involved in carbon and nutrient cycling. While noteworthy effort has been put forth to investigate the effects of N deposition on terrestrial ecosystems, a disproportionate number of N addition studies have been conducted in temperate mesic systems. Thus, we lack a holistic and mechanistic understanding of how N deposition impact aridland ecosystems. Additionally, our predictions of the effects of …
How Active Rainwater Harvesting May Help Reduce Nuisance Flooding: Flood Analysis And Social Barriers To Adoption, Isabel Lopez
How Active Rainwater Harvesting May Help Reduce Nuisance Flooding: Flood Analysis And Social Barriers To Adoption, Isabel Lopez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As urbanization continues to expand, fewer pervious surfaces are available to help reduce stormwater runoff from rainfall. The impacts of urbanization are becoming evident through sunny day flooding - flooding that occurs in areas not designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as flood zones. Nevertheless, water accumulates in low-lying areas and compromises street intersections and other parts of neighborhoods. Some methods can help alleviate the impacts of unexpected heavy rains, such as passive and active rainwater harvesting. As a pilot study, in a selected area in the northeast of El Paso, the level of adoption (e.g., what percentage …
Robust Penalized Density Power Divergence Regression With Scad Penalty For High Dimensional Data Analysis, Maxwell Kwesi Mac-Ocloo
Robust Penalized Density Power Divergence Regression With Scad Penalty For High Dimensional Data Analysis, Maxwell Kwesi Mac-Ocloo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Amidst the exponential surge in big data, managing high-dimensional datasets across diverse fields and industries has emerged as a significant challenge. Conventional statistical methods struggle to handle their complexity, making analysis intricate. In response, we've formulated a robust estimator tailored to counter outliers and heavy-tailed errors. Our approach integrates the SCAD penalty into the Density Power Divergence method, effectively reducing insignificant coefficients to zero. This enhances analysis precision and result reliability. We benchmark our robust and penalized model against existing techniques like Huber, Tukey, LASSO, LAD, and LAD-LASSO. Employing both simulated and UCI machine learning repository datasets, we assess method performance …
Continuous Risk Assessment For Large-Scale Cyber Systems, Adeel A. Malik
Continuous Risk Assessment For Large-Scale Cyber Systems, Adeel A. Malik
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cyberspace, with its multiple forms of device integration, is rapidly evolving and introducing loopholes within the cyber infrastructure, which creates opportunities for attackers. Despite the presence of network security devices such as firewalls, anti-virus, intrusion detection, and prevention systems, network intrusions still occur due to vulnerabilities within organizational assets or socially engineered cyber attacks. The lack of information about threats, vulnerabilities, and threat actors often leaves cyber defenders on a wild goose chase, making it critical to evaluate network security to mitigate adversarial threats periodically.
Various risk assessment frameworks, third-party tools, and online databases containing comprehensive threat information have been …
A Dft Analysis And Simple Hamiltonian Modeling Of A Molecular System Employed For Experimental Evidence Of Quantum Teleportation, Pedro Ulises Medina Gonzalez
A Dft Analysis And Simple Hamiltonian Modeling Of A Molecular System Employed For Experimental Evidence Of Quantum Teleportation, Pedro Ulises Medina Gonzalez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Radical ion pairs (RIPs) have been used to demonstrate quantum teleportation in molecular systems for applications in quantum information science. Covalent organic donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules can produce RIPs through photo-induced charge transfer and an additional radical (R) molecule makes quantum teleportation possible. We present the electronic structure and analyze charge transfer excited states of a recently studied [1] D-A-R molecular system using density functional theory. The distances between donor-acceptor and donor-radical are about 12.9 \AA $\,$ and 21.9 \AA, respectively. The excitation energies are calculated using the perturbative delta-SCF method and agree with other conventional excited-state methods and experimental reference …
Advances In One-Electron Self-Interaction-Correction Methods For Accurate And Efficient Self-Interaction-Free Density Functional Calculations, Selim Romero
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Density functional theory (DFT) is a widely used computational method for studying electronic structures of atoms, molecules, and solids. It provides an exact theory for obtaining ground state energy from the ground state density. However, since the exact exchange-correlation functional remains unknown, approximate exchange-correlation functionals called approximate density approximations (DFAs) are used. The foundation of many DFAs is the local spin density approximation (LSDA). It serves as the starting point for constructing various DFAs. However, DFAs are prone to self-interaction errors (SIE) due to the improper cancellation of the approximate exchange energy and the Coulomb energy. This issue impacts the …

Robust Mahalanobis K-Means Algorithm In Comparison With Other Existing Clustering Methods., Eleazer Tabi Serebour
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study enhances K-means Mahalanobis clustering using Density Power Divergence (DPD) for outlier handling and detection. Through the utilization of simulations and the analysis of real-world data, our approach consistently outperforms standard K-means, Mahalanobis K-means, Fuzzy C-means, and others in clustering datasets with outliers. While our method performs similarly to others on spherical datasets, it ranks second to DBSCAN for arbitrary shapes. We showcase its superiority on real-life datasets (Iris flower and wheat seed), demonstrating resilient outlier identification. By navigating various structures and cluster characteristics, our Modified Mahalanobis K-means method proves adaptable and robust, offering insights into diverse clustering scenarios. …
How To Best Retrain A Neural Network If We Added One More Input Variable, Saeid Tizpaz-Niari, Vladik Kreinovich
How To Best Retrain A Neural Network If We Added One More Input Variable, Saeid Tizpaz-Niari, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Often, once we have trained a neural network to estimate the value of a quantity y based on the available values of inputs x1, ..., xn, we learn to measure the values of an additional quantity that have some influence on y. In such situations, it is desirable to re-train the neural network, so that it will be able to take this extra value into account. A straightforward idea is to add a new input to the first layer and to update all the weights based on the patterns that include the values of the new input. The problem with …

How To Make Decision Under Interval Uncertainty: Description Of All Reasonable Partial Orders On The Set Of All Intervals, Tiago M. Costa, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
How To Make Decision Under Interval Uncertainty: Description Of All Reasonable Partial Orders On The Set Of All Intervals, Tiago M. Costa, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, we need to make a decision while for each alternative, we only know the corresponding value of the objective function with interval uncertainty. To help a decision maker in this situation, we need to know the (in general, partial) order on the set of all intervals that corresponds to the preferences of the decision maker. For this purpose, in this paper, we provide a description of all such partial orders -- under some reasonable conditions. It turns out that each such order is characterized by two linear inequalities relating the endpoints of the corresponding intervals, and …
