Praseodymium Nitride Endohedral Metallofullerene As Donor In Photovoltaic Cells, Luis F. Gardea, Manuel N. Chaur, Luis Echegoyen
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Trimetallic nitride template endohedral metallofullerenes (TNT EMFs) have been found to have structures and electronic properties that make them suitable for fields like molecular electronics. The particular compounds synthesized were the family of TNT EMFs Pr3N@C2n due to the relatively high yield of Pr3N@C88 and even more due to its low first oxidation potential (0.06 V) and therefore this compound has the ability to act as a capable electron donor in a multilayer organic photovoltaic cell. The compound was synthesized through the use of a Kratschmer-Huffman arc reactor. A mixture of Praseodymium Oxide and …

Since the discovery of C60 fullerene 25 years ago, the pursuit of encapsulating different metals, metallic clusters, and small molecules have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to the possibility of tuning the electronic and chemical properties of these compounds. As of today various metal-non-metal combinations have been obtained such as metallic nitrides, sulfides, metal carbides and metal oxides, however, none of them (except for Sc3N@C80) has been prepared in high yields. In this work we study the preparation process of different metallofullerenes and the dependence of the fullerene yield on various parameters …

Bimetallic Systems As Platforms For Supramolecular Chemistry And Metal Organic Frameworks, Jose M. Veleta, Dino Villagrán
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Homonuclear M2 units (M = Ru, Mo) with tetraacetate ligands are used as starting materials to react with a wide variety of electron rich molecules; HDAniF (N,N’-di-p-anisylformamidine) has been used as a bridging ligand for the M-M units, and bisbidentate carboxylate and carboxamidate ligands have been used as linkers between M2 units. Special interest is focused in the study of compounds with multiple bonds between bimetallic units, as well as paramagnetic and electrochemical active complexes. The reactivity of these bimetallic complexes leads to the synthesis of monomeric and dimeric species, which are building blocks for the design of …

One-Pot Γ-Amino Acids Synthesis From Co2 Via Zirconacycle, Teresita J. Maldonado, Diego A. Pedroza, Shizue Mito
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
One-pot γ-amino acids synthesis from CO2 via zirconacycle was studied. It has been reported that ketone and isocyanides are viable substrates for insertion into Zr‒C bonds of zirconocene‒1-aza-1,3-diene complexes. The purpose of this project is to explore the viability of CO2 insertion to develop a new method for γ-amino acids synthesis in which all the reactions are executed in a single pot. In this method, first zirconocene‒1-aza-1,3-diene complex is prepared by using Cp2Zr2Cl2 and an α, β-unsaturated imine. Second, CO2 was introduced into the zirconocene complex solution to form the seven-membered ring …
Redox Potential Tuning By Mixed-Ligand Quadruply Bonded Dimolybdenum Compounds, Nathalie Valdez, Dino Villagran
Redox Potential Tuning By Mixed-Ligand Quadruply Bonded Dimolybdenum Compounds, Nathalie Valdez, Dino Villagran
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Oxidation-reduction reactions are crucial in chemistry. They are vital for biochemical reactions such as cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Redox reactions are also important in industrial processes, such as the reduction of ores to obtain metals and to produce electrochemical cells. While this field of chemistry has been studied extensively, this project attempts to get a better understanding of electron donor properties of basic ligands attached to bimetallic units. The more basic a ligand is, the better its electron donor properties are which allows us to stabilize higher oxidations states. Guanidine ligands have been found to be able to stabilize higher …
Development Of A New Protecting Group For N-Acetylneuraminic Acid In Glycopeptide Synthesis, Luis A. Barrera, Katja Michael
Development Of A New Protecting Group For N-Acetylneuraminic Acid In Glycopeptide Synthesis, Luis A. Barrera, Katja Michael
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
N-acetylneuraminc acid (Neu5Ac) is contained in a tumor-associated antigen called STn, which is expressed in form of glycoproteins on the cell surface of many carcinomas. Synthesized partial sequences (glycopeptides) of these cell surface glycoproteins could potentially be used as anticancer vaccines, or for the production of antibodies which could be useful for immunotherapy. STn-containing glycopeptides are sensitive to acid and base catalyzed decomposition, which makes their chemical synthesis quite challenging. If this research is successful, we may be able to contribute to the advancement of cancer research by making sensitive STn-containing glycopeptides more accessible through chemical synthesis.

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Stereo vision is an important research topic in computer vision. It attempts to emulate the human vision system by using two or more images of the same scene to estimate depth information in three dimensions. The development of this topic is of much importance to many applications that vary from medical to entertainment. Currently, many researchers are searching for a method that will increase the speed of the process and still obtain high-quality results. Dynamic programming, which is a method for solving complex problems by breaking them down into simpler sub problems, has been successfully applied in stereo vision. We …

Synthesis Of Metal Organic Framework Composites For Improved Porosity, Jesse Murillo, Venkata P. Neti, Luis Echegoyen*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
The synthesis of new highly porous composite materials, by combining Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and graphene derivatives is described. The porosity of these composite materials is confirmed by pore volume, nitrogen uptake, BET and Langmuir surface area calculations. Structural information for the composites is accomplished through powder x-ray diffraction measurements, thermal gravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. MOF-210, reported by Yaghi et al. in 2010, was chosen for composition with a graphene oxide composite due to its record holding pore size and internal surface area. The synthetic route to creation of precursors for MOF-210, as well as MOF-210 synthesis, is …
Real Time Face Hallucination For Recognition, Alexander Knaust, Olac Fuentes
Real Time Face Hallucination For Recognition, Alexander Knaust, Olac Fuentes
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Low resolution video and images are a common hindrance in recognition of people or enjoyment of a communication service, but are often necessary due to high hardware costs or low bandwidth availability. In particular, surveillance images of faces are commonly of too low a resolution to recognize reliably, hampering their purpose. Face Hallucination consists of Super-Resolution techniques to enhance the images of faces beyond what can be achieved by standard interpolation techniques. Unfortunately, the facial hallucination algorithms in present literature are slow, taking up to an hour with modestly sized images. We propose optimizations of the Eigentransform Super Resolution algorithm …

After folding into their proper three-dimensional shapes, some proteins will undergo posttranslational modifications in order to fully attain their final function or change among different biologically functional forms. Sumoylation is a posttranslational modification process in which small proteins called SUMO (Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier) will modify the target proteins and alter their functions. The protein under investigation is Gam1, an early gene product of adenovirus CELO (Chicken Embryo Lethal Orphan) which not only inhibits global sumoylation of the host cell facilitating viral propagation, but is also itself sumoylated. This research aims to crystallize and determine the atomic structure of Gam1 in …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Electron-transfer (ET) is one of the simplest chemical events, yet it is a vital process for chemical reactivity. Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the concerted transfer of protons and electrons which is fundamental in chemical and biological systems and processes in electrochemistry, photosynthesis, and enzymatic activity. Similarly, mixed-valence (MV) systems are pervasive in nature and provide a platform for multiple electron transfers systems in nature. While both fields have been studied extensively, little work has been done on the intersection of the two. This project explores the elegant use of MV bimetallic systems through hydrogen-bonded networks. Using standard Schlenk and …

The parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) causes Chagas disease which is a big problem in Central and South America, affecting 16-18 million people annually. While there are two non-FDA approved drugs to treat acute Chagas disease, there is no treatment available for its chronic stage. The objective of this project is to synthesize the substrate for acyl dihydroxyacetonephosphate synthase (ADS). This enzyme participates in the first step of alkyl lipid synthesis which is very abundant in T. cruzi, and is a potential target for developing more efficient drugs or inhibitors to treat Chagas disease. Recently, several alkyl phospholipid derivatives …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Without the Sun, we would not enjoy the benefits of life here on the Earth. This energy is essential and crucial for sustaining life: playing important roles in circadian rhythms and photosynthesis in plants. In our research, this endlessly renewable clean energy source is utilized for photo-Friedel-Crafts acylation of 1,4 - benzoquinones and 1,4 - naphthoquinones. Photo-Friedel-Crafts acylation was first discovered in 1891 and although there have been reported examples of acylated products, the substrates are still limited. In this project a variety of aldehydes having different substituents are examined, and bioassays were performed. While conventional methods for photochemistry use …

Structural and functional diversity have been incorporated in photo-switched donor-acceptor (D-A) systems for the development and improvement of Organic Photovoltaic Cells (OPVs). By varying the structure and electronic properties of the donor and acceptor, the length and electronic properties of the linker, it is possible to control the efficiencies and lifetimes of photo-induced intramolecular charge separated states (D+-A-). Modification of electrodes is a widely studied field for applications in biochemistry, materials science, electrocatalysis, among others. Here we report for the first time the modification of gold (Au) and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes with fullerene-based dyads …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
As the use of computing devices increases every day, users rely on the adequate functioning of software. When software is not tested properly, it can yield erroneous information or a complete failure of the system. The NIST estimates that defective software cost the United States economy close to $60 billion a year. Therefore, there is a need to develop software testing techniques that are time and cost effective. Fully testing software under all possible combinations of parameters values cannot be reduced. However, testing can focus on covering all combinations of subsets of parameters and empirical data shows that doing so …

Ti2s@C78: A Non-Group-Iii Metal Sulfide Cluster Inside A C78 Cage, Vivian L. Triana, Fang-Fang Li, Luis Echegoyen*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
After the discovery of the first nitride cluster metallofullerenes (NCFs), Sc3N@C80, in 1999, numerous cluster metallofullerenes have been prepared. However, the types of “clusterfullerenes” reported so far are quite limited: nitride cluster fullerenes (NCFs), carbide cluster metallofullerenes (CCFs), oxide cluster metallofullerenes (OCFs) and sulfide cluster fullerenes (SCFs). Given that almost all of the encaged metals for all of these reported cluster fullerenes are limited to group-III (Sc, Y, and lanthanide) metals, there are very few reports of the synthesis of cluster fullerenes with a non-group III metal, titanium (Ti), trapped inside a carbon cage. However, the …
An Intelligent System To Manage Soft Constraints, Gabriel Higareda, Eduardo Breijo, Martine Ceberio
An Intelligent System To Manage Soft Constraints, Gabriel Higareda, Eduardo Breijo, Martine Ceberio
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Most problems can be expressed in terms of requirements that must be met by their expected solutions. Constraints are requirements and constraint programming is a declarative programming paradigm that simply consists in modeling problems as lists of their requirements. Many constraint solvers exist that provide solutions to such list of requirements.
However, constraint solvers are stiff: if a problem was ill modeled, no solution will be returned and the original problem called over-constrained. Nevertheless there is hope even in these cases: such overconstrained problems can be handled as soft constraints, meaning that their processing will not be stiff anymore and …

Electronic Communication Between Dimolybdenum Units And Ruthenium As A Metal Center Linked By Dimethyloxamide, Daniel D. Anchondo, Dino Villagran
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Multi-electron redox reactions are important in chemistry. They are crucial in biochemical reactions such as photosynthesis and in many enzymatic processes in nature. Typical examples can be the electrolysis of water which is a four electron process, nitrogen fixation which is a six electron process. Multi-electron redox reactions are also important in industrial processes, such as the reduction of ores to obtain metals and to produce electrochemical cells. Therefore it is vital to study multi-electron redox reactions. We use dimolybdenum units bridged to a ruthenium atom as a platform to study these reactions by measuring the electron communication between two …

Novel Dyad-Fullerene Derivative Used As Acceptor With P3ht In Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells, Amber D. Berkobien, Luis Echegoyen, Maira Cerón, Danisha Rivera
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Within the world of solar cells, research is rapidly uncovering potential solutions to the alternative energy issues by utilizing bulk-heterojunction cell techniques (Figure 1a) for low-cost and quick effective manufacturing. In this scope of research, a unique concept of donor-acceptor (D-A) system pairing as an acceptor within the bulk-heterojunction cell has been brought to light; a new concept of utilizing HOMO/LUMO pairings to create effective transport systems between a combination D-A acceptor and polymer donor is being optimized for maximum Photo-Conversion Efficiency (PCE). Due to a similar band gap relationship between the commonly reported PCBM and the novel dyad fullerene …

Integrated Approach For Low-Cost And Sensitive Multiplex Pathogen Detection On 3d Paper-Based Microfluidic Devices, Alejandra Valadez, Huan Hu, Xiujun James Li
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Recently, pathogenic microorganisms have aroused wide public concern for their potential to cause serious diseases in humans, animals and agricultural crops. Although DNA microarrays are commonly used for pathogen detection, the approach is sophisticated, time-consuming and requires expensive equipment, limiting its application in resource-poor settings. Herein we present a novel, low-cost, paper-based microfluidic approach for multiplexed DNA detection of Giardia Lamblia, S. aureus, and Entamoeba, by “on-chip” isothermal DNA amplification and hybridization. Paper-based microfluidics offers a novel, sensitive and low-cost alternative for Point-of-Care Diagnostics for the Developing Countries. The project described utilizes Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP), a novel isothermal DNA …
Prosody-Based Query-By-Example Spoken Utterance Retrieval, Steven D. Werner, Nigel G. Ward
Prosody-Based Query-By-Example Spoken Utterance Retrieval, Steven D. Werner, Nigel G. Ward
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Current spoken dialogue retrieval systems are almost entirely lexically based, using automatic transcription by imperfect speech recognition technology. Once audio is reduced to text, little more than existing text search methods are used to retrieve results. However, spoken dialogue contains rich latent prosodic information about dialogue activities - such as agreeing, arguing, deciding, planning, storytelling, showing surprise - and this extra information can often be relevant to the searchers aims. Searching for similar speech acts rather then similar words enables similar contextual results, returning points where the speaker had the same sentiment during a topic. Previous research yielded 76 dimensions …
How To Divide Students Into Groups So As To Optimize Learning: Towards A Solution To A Pedagogy-Related Optimization Problem, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
How To Divide Students Into Groups So As To Optimize Learning: Towards A Solution To A Pedagogy-Related Optimization Problem, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To enhance learning, it is desirable to also let students learn from each other, e.g., by working in groups. It is known that such groupwork can improve learning, but the effect strongly depends on how we divide students into groups. In this paper, based on a first approximation model of student interaction, we describe how to optimally divide students into groups so as to optimize the resulting learning. We hope that, by taking into account other aspects of student interaction, it will be possible to transform our solution into truly optimal practical recommendations.
Decision Making Under Interval And Fuzzy Uncertainty: Towards An Operational Approach, Rafik Aliev, Oleg H. Huseynov, Vladik Kreinovich
Decision Making Under Interval And Fuzzy Uncertainty: Towards An Operational Approach, Rafik Aliev, Oleg H. Huseynov, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional decision theory is based on a simplifying assumption that for each two alternatives, a user can always meaningfully decide which of them is preferable. In reality, often, when the alternatives are close, the user is either completely unable to select one of these alternatives, or selects one of the alternatives only "to some extent". How can we extend the traditional decision theory to such realistic interval and fuzzy cases? In their previous papers, the first two authors proposed a natural generalization of the usual decision theory axioms to interval and fuzzy cases, and described decision coming from this generalization. …

Membership Functions Or Alpha-Cuts? Algorithmic (Constructivist) Analysis Justifies An Interval Approach, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In his pioneering papers, Igor Zaslavsky started an algorithmic (constructivist) analysis of fuzzy logic. In this paper, we extend this analysis to fuzzy mathematics and fuzzy data processing. Specifically, we show that the two mathematically equivalent representations of a fuzzy number -- by a membership function and by alpha-cuts -- are not algorithmically equivalent, and only the alpha-cut representation enables us to efficiently process fuzzy data.
Interval Or Moments: Which Carry More Information?, Michael Beer, Vladik Kreinovich
Interval Or Moments: Which Carry More Information?, Michael Beer, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, we do not have enough observations to uniquely determine the corresponding probability distribution, we only have enough observations to estimate two parameters of this distribution. In such cases, the traditional statistical approach is to estimate the mean and the standard deviation. Alternatively, we can estimate the two bounds that form the range of the corresponding variable and thus, generate an interval. Which of these two approaches should we select? A natural idea is to select the most informative approach, i.e., an approach in which we need the smallest amount of additional information (in Shannon's sense) to …

Silica Supported Silver Nanoparticles Catalyst Systems For Oxidation Of Dbt In Crude Oil., Ashlie Santaliz, Brenda Torres, Maryam Zarei, Manuel Ramos, Russel R. Chianelli
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Metal nanoparticles (NP’s) have become a subject of intense interest in various fields of chemistry and physics primarily because of its catalytic activity at their specific surfaces. Their catalytic activity depending solely of their factes, it is recomendable to achieve six-fold symmetry along with edge sites, ideal places for the attachment of molecules. The aim of this project is to achieve the synthesis of NP-Ag and their functionalizatiin using supported on silica to later perform an oxidation model reaction of diobenzothiophene (DBT) to diobenzenethiophene-sulfone. The DBT oxidation reaction was performed in a reflux system using DBT and silica solved in …
