The goal of this research is to use optical emission spectroscopy to investigate the processes occurring subsequent to laser ablation of a titanium sample. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy provides a procedure for atomic and molecular identification for particular constituents of a laser-induced plasma. Atomic spectral line shapes provide a diagnostic tool for characterizing laser induced plasma, particularly within the first hundreds of nanoseconds. Molecular recombination and/or excitation of selected molecules can lead to simultaneous detection of atomic and molecular species via spectral analysis. In this thesis, we present several projects on the growth and functionality of layered materials, using density functional theory (DFT) method and phenomenological modeling approach. Beyond the understanding of growth mechanisms and exploration of properties, we propose novel avenues to realize controllable growth processes and layered materials with desirable properties. Forest disturbances, such as wildfires, the southern pine beetle, and the hemlock woolly adelgid, affect millions of hectares of forest in North America with significant implications for forest health and management. This dissertation presents new methods to quantify and monitor disturbance through time in the forests of the eastern United States using remotely sensed imagery from the Landsat family of satellites, detect clouds and cloud-shadow in imagery, generate composite images from the clear-sky regions of multiple images acquired at different times, delineate the extents of disturbance events, identify the years in which they occur, and label those events with an …

Heterogeneously catalyzed reactions typically start with adsorption and dissociation of reactant molecules on the surface of a solid catalyst. In many instances, this is followed by surface diffusion of the adsorbed species, chemical reaction, and removal of the product molecule. According to the Sabatier principle, optimal catalytic performance requires that the bonding between the adsorbate molecule and the surface should neither be too strong nor too weak. This bonding strength is directly related to the catalyst’s surface electronic structure and hence, electronic structure modification would seem a promising approach for tuning catalytic activity.

The surface plasmon is a coherent charge density oscillation localized at a metal surface. It can couple with light and the resulting plasmon-polariton hybrid mode is confined to volumes that are much smaller than the classical diffraction limit of light. Nano-plasmonics is a rapidly evolving field where light manipulation at the nanoscale may lead to novel applications. Geologic investigations at the southwestern end of the Cat Square terrane (CSt) in central Georgia provided new insight into the complex tectonic history of the Pine Mountain window (PMw) and neighboring Inner Piedmont terranes. Detailed 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping of an approximately 180 km2 area near Barnesville, Georgia has provided the foundation for further geochemical, geochronologic, and structural analyses refining models for tectonic development and emplacement of the CSt and PMw.

Whole-rock geochemical analyses of several CSt amphibolites yielded data suggesting a continental back-arc setting for genesis of the Cat Square basin (CSb). Major element data confirm derivation from a basaltic …

Hydrogen fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to create water and electricity. Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) make up barriers within the fuel cell allowing only protons to pass through, while keeping other components separate. Many PEM contain phosphoric acid (PA) as a building block due to its excellent proton conducting properties. Improved ionic conductivity in PEM can lead to the development of better, more efficient fuel cells.

Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) has both mathematical and physical roots that extend as far back as the early 20th century. We present the progression of these humble roots from the Ideal Gas Law, all the way to the renormalization group and conformal field theory, to better understand the impact SLE has had on modern statistical mechanics. We then explore the potential application of the percolation exploration process to crack propagation processes, illustrating the interplay between mathematics and physics.

Suspended sediment rating curve parameters were analyzed to investigate the relationship of suspended load and discharge in the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB) at the annual and monthly levels. The rating curve parameters were obtained from the power function of load and discharge: Load = a × (Discharge)b [(Discharge)^b]. The function was solved by ordinary least squares regression on its logarithmic form.

The annual rating coefficient a and exponent b ranged from 0 to 0.25 (kg/s)(s/m3)b [(kg/s)(s/m^3)^b] and from 0.91 to 4.27, respectively. The monthly rating coefficient a and exponent b ranged from 0 to 0.239 …

Free radicals are atoms or molecules with an odd number of electrons in an outer shell. Since electrons typically occur in pairs, this leaves one electron that is unpaired. In seek of another electron to pair with, free radicals react with and steal electrons from neighboring molecules, which then become free radicals themselves. This can start a chain reaction, cascading into large scale damage.

One of the most profound byproducts of the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) was the onset of oxidative weathering on land and the riverine delivery of sulfate to marine systems. The marine sulfur system therefore plays a critical role in reconstructing the oxygenation of the early Earth. Although the exact nature of marine oxygenation in aftermath of GOE remains uncertain, examination and modeling of marine sulfate suggest that sulfate concentrations remained below 2 millimolar (mM) until at least the middle Mesoproterozoic, and may have only reached about 10 mM in the latest Neoproterozoic. In this work, spectroscopic emissions from laser ablated aluminum samples are used to characterize the time dependent decay of laser-induced plasma. The plasma is created by tightly focusing nanosecond pulsed laser radiation. Time resolved measurements of the plasma are made with a gated, intensified linear diode array coupled to an optical multichannel analyzer and/or an intensified charged coupled device. Time resolution is achieved by synchronizing the laser with the measurement rate of the array detector.

The triangle method has been widely used in the food industry for many years when conducting sensory discrimination testing. Recently, however, another discrimination testing method, the tetrad, has begun to gain popularity. Based on currently published research, the tetrad method possesses statistical advantages over the triangle and would require fewer panelists, reduce testing time, and use less sample material. More testing is needed to confirm these advantages in an applied, industrial approach on a wider range of products. Actinium-225 is one of the more effective radioisotopes used in alpha radioimmunotherapy. Due to its ten-day half-life, it is more efficient to create its precursor, 229Th [Thorium-229] (t1/2[half-life] = 7932 ± 55 years). In this work, 229Th was produced via 40 MeV [Mega electron Volts] proton bombardment of a thick 232Th [Thorium-232] target. The irradiation took place at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL). The target, consisting of 23 stacked natural thorium foils (137 mg/cm2 [milligrams per square centimeter] each), was irradiated with 50 nA [nanoamps] of …

Those who suffer from Celiac Disease have an autoimmune response to the protein complex gluten. The goal of this work is to better understand the biological mechanisms in Celiac Disease through modeling with a system of ordinary differential equations. We first develop a model for the way in which gluten induces a response in zonulin in those with Celiac Disease and estimate parameters for such a model using limited data. This dissertation consists of four integral parts with a unified objective of developing efficient numerical methods for high frequency time-harmonic wave equations defined on both homogeneous and random media. The first part investigates the generalized weak coercivity of the acoustic Helmholtz, elastic Helmholtz, and time-harmonic Maxwell wave operators. We prove that such a weak coercivity holds for these wave operators on a class of more general domains called generalized star-shape domains. As a by-product, solution estimates for the corresponding Helmholtz-type problems are obtained.

Optimal control can be used to design intervention strategies for the control of infectious diseases and predator-prey systems. In this dissertation, we studied models encapsulating two relatively new areas of mathematical biology, which combine epidemiology with immunology and ecology.

We formulated immuno-epidemiological models of coupled within-host model of ordinary differential equations and between-host model of ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations, using the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) for illustration, and set a framework for optimal control of immuno-epidemiological models. Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) uses random numbers to simulate the time evolution of processes with well-defined rates. We analyze a multi-step KMC algorithm aimed at speeding up the single-step procedure and apply the algorithm to study a model for the growth of a surface dendrite. The growth of the dendrite is initiated when atoms diffusing on a substrate cluster due to lower hopping rates for highly coordinated atoms. We use the tool of optimal control to investigate harvesting strategies for maximizing yield of a fish population in a heterogeneous, finite domain. The region around 100 Sn [100Sn] is important because of the close proximity to the N=Z=50 magic numbers, the rp process, and the proton drip-line. Alpha decay measurements show a reversal in the spin-parity assignments of the ground and first excited states in 101 Sn [101Sn] compared to 105 Te [105Te]. However, the lightest odd- mass tin isotope with a firm spin-parity assignment is 109 Sn [109Sn]. The d 5/2 [d5/2] and g 7/2 [g7/2] single-particle states above N=50 are near degenerate, evidenced by the excitation energy of the first excited state in 101 Sn at only 172 keV. The …

Room temperature ionic liquids are an important class of materials due to their chemical tunability and numerous advantageous physicochemical properties. As a result, ionic liquids are currently being investigated for use in a wide array of chemical and electrochemical applications. Despite their great potential, however, the relationship between the chemical structure and physicochemical properties of ionic liquids is not well understood.

Chemical doping is a well-established method for controlling the electronic properties of bulk semiconductors and, e.g, complex oxide materials. In this process, dopant atoms are located at substitutional lattice locations, from where they introduce free charge carriers to the host material. These carriers greatly improve the electrical conductivity of the host material and can even induce an insulator-metal transition at high doping levels. Dopants, however, also introduce scattering centers that are detrimental to conductivity, especially in low-dimensional systems such as nanowires and ultrathin films. Environmental fluctuations related to climate, biological productivity, and evaporation can be recorded by sedimentary archives within lacustrine depositional systems. Sediments within terminal, closed-basin lakes are amongst the most sensitive paleoenvironmental indicators, and have great potential for permitting detailed reconstruction of environmental conditions via a variety of geochemical and isotopic proxies. Microbialites, however, have been largely overlooked as repositories of paleoenvironmental data. Here, we investigate mineralized microbialites within Laguna Negra, a high-altitude (4100 meters above sea level) hypersaline, closed-basin lake in the Argentinian Puna region and explore the potential recovery of environmental signals from these unique sedimentary archives. Some of the most common and fatal birth defects are those related to the heart. In adults, possible heart conditions are often identified through the use of an electrocardiogram (ECG). However, due to the presence of other signals and noise in the recording, fetal eletrocardiography has not yet proven effective in diagnosing these defects. This paper develops a mathematical model of three-dimensional heart vector trajectories, which was used to generate synthetic maternal and fetal ECG signals. This paper presents the relationship between applied power by a wheeled vehicle to soil and the rutting effects. Specifically, a strong positive relationship was found between cumulative applied power and total rut volume across multiple passes by the vehicle over the same tracks. Field-testing was conducted using a high-mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) and two distinct soil types. Sensors on the vehicle measured torque and angular velocity of each of the four wheels, from which applied power was calculated.
