Survey Of Biosynthetic Gene Clusters From Sequenced Myxobacteria And Analysis Of Potential Metabolic Diversity, Katherine C. Gregory Jan 2019

Survey Of Biosynthetic Gene Clusters From Sequenced Myxobacteria And Analysis Of Potential Metabolic Diversity, Katherine C. Gregory

Honors Theses

The importance of natural product discovery to society is undeniable as natural products have seemingly infinite applications, particularly in regard to pharmacological use as antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, anticancer and immunosuppressive agents. The search for new therapeutics and other new chemical commodities thus grows simultaneously with antibiotic resistance and commercial pressure on pharmaceutical research. However, the increasingly common phenomenon of natural product rediscovery continues to inhibit advancement in this field. We contend that the likelihood of rediscovery can be predicted by taxonomic distance between the bacteria in question and previously studied bacteria. That is, our data supports a correlation between chemical …

6th-12th Grade Math Teachers And Their Experiences With The Mississippi College- And Career-Readiness Standards, Dorothy Reid Jan 2019

6th-12th Grade Math Teachers And Their Experiences With The Mississippi College- And Career-Readiness Standards, Dorothy Reid

Honors Theses

This thesis identifies and describes 6th-12th grade math teachers and their experiences with the Mississippi College- and Career- Readiness Standards. There are two parts to this thesis: 1) a survey distributed to public school math teachers across the state and 2) the written thesis. In my thesis, I craft teacher narratives from the quantitative and qualitative results of the survey. Listening to the teachers’ narratives provides beneficial insights to the implementation of the MCCRS at the classroom level. Teachers have many different experiences. My thesis offers policy recommendations, based on the teacher narratives, to three levels of education: teachers, schools …

Classically Biased: A Quantitative Analysis Of Gender & Writing Styles In Classical Literature, Madeleine Rose Delcambre Jan 2019

Classically Biased: A Quantitative Analysis Of Gender & Writing Styles In Classical Literature, Madeleine Rose Delcambre

Honors Theses

This thesis is a first attempt in assessing patterns related to gender in classical literature prior to the 21st century, specifically looking at the way writing styles and language di↵er among female and male authors; e.g., sentence structuring, lexical diversity, and dictionary similarities. Further topics of analysis included gender distribution and sentiment within the novels themselves. Seventy-eight open-source novels were used in the analysis, with thirty-one books by female authors and forty-seven by male authors. Data from the novels was acquired using Python, natural language processing, and the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK). Graphs and visuals were then created to summarize …

Automating The Calculation Of The Hilbert–Kunz Multiplicity And F-Signature, Gabriel Johnson, Sandra Spiroff Jan 2019

Automating The Calculation Of The Hilbert–Kunz Multiplicity And F-Signature, Gabriel Johnson, Sandra Spiroff

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2018 The Authors The Hilbert–Kunz multiplicity and F-signature are important invariants for researchers in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. We provide software, and describe the automation, for the calculations of the two invariants in the case of intersection algebras over polynomial rings.

Cramer Type Moderate Deviations For Random Fields And Mutual Information Estimation For Mixed-Pair Random Variables, Aleksandr Beknazaryan Jan 2019

Cramer Type Moderate Deviations For Random Fields And Mutual Information Estimation For Mixed-Pair Random Variables, Aleksandr Beknazaryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we first study Cramer type moderate deviation for partial sums of random fields by applying the conjugate method. In 1938 Cramer published his results on large deviations of sums of i.i.d. random variables after which a lot of research has been done on establishing Cramer type moderate and large deviation theorems for different types of random variables and for various statistics. In particular results have been obtained for independent non-identically distributed random variables for the sum of independent random to estimate the mutual information between two random variables. The estimates enjoy a central limit theorem under some …

Mefenamic Acid – Hpmc As Hg Amorphous Solid Dispersions: Dissolution Enhancement Using Hot Melt Extrusion Technology, Ashay Shukla Jan 2019

Mefenamic Acid – Hpmc As Hg Amorphous Solid Dispersions: Dissolution Enhancement Using Hot Melt Extrusion Technology, Ashay Shukla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mefenamic acid, a BCS class II drug, displays high permeability and low solubility, thereby exhibiting a poor dissolution profile. Hence to improve the solubility and dissolution rate of Mefenamic acid, Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) technique was employed. The amorphous solid dispersion matrix exhibited enhanced dissolution with desired release characteristics. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetate succinate (AquaSolve™ HPMC-AS HG) was used as a carrier with the poloxamer (Kolliphor P407). The drug load was varied from 20% to 40% within the blend. Drug and polymers were blended using a twin shell V-blender for 10 minutes and extruded using an 11mm twin-screw co-rotating extruder (ThermoFisher Scientific, …

Beta Invariant And Variations Of Chain Theorems For Matroids, Sooyeon Lee Jan 2019

Beta Invariant And Variations Of Chain Theorems For Matroids, Sooyeon Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The beta invariant of a matroid was introduced by Crapo in 1967. We first find the lower bound of the beta invariant of 3-connected matroids with rank r and the matroids which attain the lower bound. Second we characterize the matroids with beta invariant 5 and 6. For binary matroids we characterize matroids with beta invariant 7. These results extend earlier work of Oxley. Lastly we partially answer an open question of chromatic uniqueness of wheels and prove a splitting formula for the beta invariant of generalized parallel connection of two matroids. Tutte's Wheel-and-Whirl theorem and Seymour's Splitter theorem give …

On A Generalization Of Lucas Numbers, Skylyn Olyvia Irby Jan 2019

On A Generalization Of Lucas Numbers, Skylyn Olyvia Irby

Honors Theses

In this paper, we consider a generalization of Lucas numbers. Recall that Lucas numbers are the sequence of integers defined by the recurrence relation: L_n = L_{n−1} + L_{n−2} with the initial conditions L_1 = 1 and L_2 = 3(or L_0 = 1 and L_1 = 3 if the first subscript is zero). That is, the classical Lucas number sequence is 1, 3, 4, 7, 11, 18, .... The goal of the present paper is to study properties of certain generalizations of the Lucas sequence. In particular, we consider the following generalizations of the sequence: l_n = al_{n−1} + l_{n−2} …

Electro- And Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction And Thermal Isomerization Of Highly Strained Tricyclocompounds, Weiwei Yang Jan 2019

Electro- And Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction And Thermal Isomerization Of Highly Strained Tricyclocompounds, Weiwei Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anthracene-bridged dinuclear rhenium complexes are reported for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction to carbon monoxide (CO). Related by hindered rotation of each rhenium active site to either side of the anthracene bridge cis and trans conformers have been isolated and characterized. Electrochemical studies reveal distinct mechanisms whereby the cis conformer operates via cooperative bimetallic CO2 activation and conversion and the trans conformer reduces CO2 through well-established single-site and bimolecular pathways analogous to Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl. Higher turnover frequencies are observed for the cis conformer (35.3 s−1) relative to the trans conformer (22.9 s−1) with both outperforming Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl (11.1 s−1). Photocatalytic …

Ligand Effect On Gold Nanomolecules Demonstrated Using Aliphatic, Aromatic And Bulky Thiolate Ligands, Milan Rambukwella

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Atomically precise thiolate protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) known as gold nanomolecules (AuNMs) are intensely pursued owing to their feasibility to elucidate their structure by single crystal X-ray crystallography. They have distinct number of Au atoms (n) and thiolate (-SR, R-hydrocarbon chain) ligands (m) with molecular formula of the form [Aun(SR)m]. AuNMs are made of a gold core protected by a thiolate-monolayer and possess size-dependent properties conferred by quantum confinement. Atomic precision has been achieved in the 1-3 nm range and crystal structures of several AuNMs ranging from 18 to 279gold atoms have been studied. They provide significant insights into the …
