Seeing Is Fixing: Cross-Modal Reasoning With Multimodal Llms For Visual Software Issue Fixing, Kai Huang, Jian Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Chunyang Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large language model (LLM)-based automated program repair (APR) techniques have shown promising results in resolving real-world github issue tasks. Existing APR systems are primarily evaluated in unimodal settings (e.g., SWE-bench), relying solely on textual issue descriptions and source code. However, these autonomous systems struggle to resolve multimodal problem scenarios (e.g., SWE-bench M) due to limitations in interpreting and leveraging visual information. In multimodal scenarios, LLMs need to rely on visual information in the graphical user interface (GUI) to understand bugs and generate fixes. To bridge this gap, we propose GUIRepair, a cross-modal reasoning approach for resolving multimodal issue scenarios by …

Adasteer: Your Aligned Llm Is Inherently An Adaptive Jailbreak Defender, Weixiang Zhao, Jiahe Guo, Yulin Hu, Yang Deng, An Zhang, Xingyu Sui, Xinyang Han, Yanyan Zhao, Bing Qin, Tat-Seng Chua, Ting Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite extensive efforts in safety alignment, large language models (LLMs) remain vulnerable to jailbreak attacks. Activation steering offers a training-free defense method but relies on fixed steering coefficients, resulting in suboptimal protection and increased false rejections of benign inputs. To address this, we propose AdaSteer, an adaptive activation steering method that dynamically adjusts model behavior based on input characteristics. We identify two key properties: Rejection Law (R-Law), which shows that stronger steering is needed for jailbreak inputs opposing the rejection direction, and Harmfulness Law (H-Law), which differentiates adversarial and benign inputs. AdaSteer steers input representations along both the Rejection Direction …

Usefulness And Diminishing Returns: Evaluating Social Information In Recommender Systems, Qing Meng, Huiyu Min, Ming Shan Hee, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Bing Tian Dai, Shuai Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social recommendation, which leverages users’ social information to predict users’ preferences, is a popular branch of recommender systems. Many existing studies have attempted to advance the performance of collaborative filtering methods by leveraging the user-user matrix to enhance user embedding learning with user’s social connections. While the existing social recommender systems have demonstrated good performance in various recommendation tasks, the extent of social information usefulness in recommender systems remains unclear. This paper addresses the research gap by designing experiments to answer three research questions: (i) How useful is social information in varying user-item data sparsity? (ii) How much social information …

Distillcaps: Enhancing Audio-Language Alignment In Captioning Via Retrieval-Augmented Knowledge Distillation, Thinh Pham, Nghiem Diep, Lizi Liao, Binh Nguyen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automated audio captioning (AAC) benefits from incorporatingexternal context to interpret complex sounds, but doing so withretrieval-augmented generation (RAG) at inference is sometimesinfeasible due to data availability or incurs significant latency andcomplexity. We propose DistillCaps, a novel training-time frame-work that leverages RAG to guide knowledge distillation for im-proved audio-language alignment, while lessening the relianceon retrieval during inference. In our framework, a RAG-equippedteacher model retrieves relevant textual information (e.g., simi-lar captions) for each audio clip and uses it for training to gener-ate context-enriched captions. Simultaneously, a student model istrained to imitate this teacher, learning to produce high-qualitycaptions from audio alone. We further …

Unified Molecule Pre-Training With Flexible 2d And 3d Modalities: Single And Paired Modality Integration, Tengwei Song, Min Wu, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Molecular representation learning plays a crucial role in advancing applications such as drug discovery and material design. Existing work leverages 2D and 3D modalities of molecular information for pre-training, aiming to capture comprehensive structural and geometric insights. However, these methods require paired 2D and 3D molecular data to train the model effectively and prevent it from collapsing into a single modality, posing limitations in scenarios where a certain modality is unavailable or computationally expensive to generate. To overcome this limitation, we propose FlexMol, a flexible molecule pre-training framework that learns unified molecular representations while supporting single-modality input. Specifically, inspired by …

The metaverse is a computer-mediated environment where users take the form of digital avatars when participating in activities and interacting with one another. Given the popularity of the metaverse, especially among the younger population, we identified the values offered by the metaverse for leisure use by its users. Using the Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) approach, we identified these values in the form of fundamental and means objectives. The VFT approach was applied in interviewing users who conduct leisure activities in the metaverse and in analyzing the data collected. A total of 27 metaverse users were interviewed, which generated 8 fundamental objectives …

Designing For Novice Debuggers: A Pilot Study On An Ai-Assisted Debugging Tool, Oka Kurniawan, Erick Chandra, Christopher M. Poskitt, Yannic Noller, Kenny T.W. Choo, Cyrille Jegourel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Debugging is a fundamental skill that novice programmers must develop. Numerous tools have been created to assist novice programmers in this process. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have been integrated with automated program repair techniques to generate fixes for students' buggy code. However, many of these tools foster an over-reliance on AI and do not actively engage students in the debugging process. In this work, we aim to design an intuitive debugging assistant, CodeHinter, that combines traditional debugging tools with LLM-based techniques to help novice debuggers fix semantic errors while promoting active engagement in the debugging process. We present findings …

Simulated Interactive Debugging, Yannic Noller, Erick Chandra, Srinidhi Chandrashekar, Kenny Choo, Cyrille Jegourel, Oka Kurniawan, Christopher M. Poskitt

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Debugging software, i.e., the localization of faults and their repair, is a key activity in software engineering. Therefore, effective and efficient debugging is one of the core skills a software engineer must develop. However, the teaching of debugging techniques is usually very limited or only taught in indirect ways, e.g., during software projects. As a result, most Computer Science (CS) students learn debugging only in an ad-hoc and unstructured way. In this work, we present our approach called Simulated Interactive Debugging that interactively guides students along the debugging process. The guidance aims to empower the students to repair their solutions …

Disc: Decentralized Identity System With Self-Sovereign Credential Aggregation, Yang Yang, Wai Keung Ching, Minming Huang, Supachate Innet, Guomin Yang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The evolution of decentralized identity (DID) and self-sovereign identity (SSI) frameworks, as endorsed by W3C Verifiable Credentials (VC) and eIDAS 2.0, underscores the need for secure, efficient, and privacy-preserving credential management. However, existing credential systems often depend on centralized issuers, lack efficient aggregation mechanisms, or fail to ensure unlinkability across authentication sessions. To address these challenges, we propose DISC (Decentralized Identity System with Self-Sovereign Credential Aggregation), a novel credential system that enables multi-authority credential issuance, user-controlled credential aggregation, and unlinkable authentication. DISC allows users to aggregate credentials from multiple issuers while maintaining constant-size authentication tokens and supporting batch verification for …

Delving Into Invisible Semantics For Generalized One-Shot Neural Human Rendering, Yihong Lin, Xuemiao Xu, Huaidong Zhang, Cheng Xu, Weijie Li, Yi Xie, Jing Qin, Shengfeng He Oct 2025

Delving Into Invisible Semantics For Generalized One-Shot Neural Human Rendering, Yihong Lin, Xuemiao Xu, Huaidong Zhang, Cheng Xu, Weijie Li, Yi Xie, Jing Qin, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional human neural radiance fields often overlook crucial body semantics, resulting in ambiguous reconstructions, particularly in occluded regions. To address this problem, we propose the Super-Semantic Disentangled Neural Renderer (SSD-NeRF), which employs rich regional semantic priors to enhance human rendering accuracy. This approach initiates with a Visible-Invisible Semantic Propagation module, ensuring coherent semantic assignment to occluded parts based on visible body segments. Furthermore, a Region-Wise Texture Propagation module independently extends textures from visible to occluded areas within semantic regions, thereby avoiding irrelevant texture mixtures and preserving semantic consistency. Additionally, a view-aware curricular learning approach is integrated to bolster the model's …

Classical Shadows With Improved Median-Of-Means Estimation, Winston Fu, Dax Enshan Koh, Siong Thye Goh, Jian Feng Kong Oct 2025

Classical Shadows With Improved Median-Of-Means Estimation, Winston Fu, Dax Enshan Koh, Siong Thye Goh, Jian Feng Kong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The classical shadows protocol, introduced by Huang et al (2020 Nat. Phys. 16 1050), makes use of the median-of-means (MoM) estimator to efficiently estimate the expectation values of M observables with failure probability δ using only O ( log ⁡ ( M / δ ) ) measurements. In their analysis, Huang et al used loose constants in their asymptotic performance bounds for simplicity. However, the specific values of these constants can significantly affect the number of shots used in practical implementations. To address this, we studied a modified MoM estimator proposed by Minsker (2023 Proc. 36th Conf. on Learning Theory …

Language-Driven 3d Human Pose Estimation In Multi-Person Scenarios: A New Dataset And Approach, Tingrui Shen, Bangzhen Liu, Zhirun Fan, Shiting Zhang, Weifeng Pan, Sun Fan, Dan Cao, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In an NBA game scenario, consider the challenge of locating and analyzing the 3D poses of players performing a user-specified action, such as attempting a shot. Traditional 3D human pose estimation (3DHPE) methods often fall short in such complex, multi-person scenes due to their lack of semantic integration and reliance on isolated pose data. To address these limitations, we introduce Language-Driven 3D Human Pose Estimation (L3DHPE), a novel approach that extends 3DHPE to general multi-person contexts by incorporating detailed language descriptions. We present Panoptic-L3D, the first dataset designed for L3DHPE, featuring 3,838 linguistic annotations for 1,476 individuals across 588 videos, …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Polynomial quantified entailments with existentially and universally quantified variables arise in many problems of verification and program analysis. We present PolyQEnt which is a tool for solving polynomial quantified entailments in which variables on both sides of the implication are real valued or unbounded integers. Our tool provides a unified framework for polynomial quantified entailment problems that arise in several papers in the literature. Our experimental evaluation over a wide range of benchmarks shows the applicability of the tool as well as its benefits as opposed to simply using existing SMT solvers to solve such constraints.

Harnessing Se Community Knowledge For Developer-Centric Code Intelligence, Chengran Yang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The integration of Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly those tailored for programming tasks—referred to as code LLMs—has created novel opportunities to enhance developer productivity. These advanced models automate routine and repetitive coding tasks, such as code generation and debugging, and enable faster prototyping and more efficient problem-solving. Despite these remarkable advantages, the current generation of code LLMs exhibits notable limitations that impact their practical effectiveness in real-world software engineering scenarios. These models frequently produce code that is inefficient or suboptimal in runtime performance, demonstrate opaque reasoning processes, and struggle to adapt effectively to diverse developer contexts and specific requirements. Moreover, …

Rethinking Teaching Evaluation Reports: Designing Ai-Transformed Student Feedback For Instructor Engagement, Ruoxi Shang, Keri Mallari, Au Wei Bin Yeong, Ken Yasuhara, Anthony Tang, Gary Hsieh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Student feedback is critical for improving teaching, yet instructors often avoid reading evaluations due to emotional burden and information overload. We present a systematic exploration of how language models can distill and transform student evaluations into adaptive, actionable insights. Through a systematic design space exploration combining 4 feedback strategies (removing harmful content, paraphrasing criticism, sandwiching negatives, adding constructive suggestions) with 4 presentation formats (themes, cards, letters, chatbots), we created six AI-augmented prototypes of teaching evaluations. Interviews with 16 post-secondary instructors revealed that effective use of AI in feedback processing should: (1) support action formation through focused views and divergent thinking, …

Juxtaposing Approaches To Risk-Based Ai Governance In Different ‘Rights’ Contexts: A Comparative Analysis Between Singapore And The Eu, Jane Loo, Mark Findlay Oct 2025

Juxtaposing Approaches To Risk-Based Ai Governance In Different ‘Rights’ Contexts: A Comparative Analysis Between Singapore And The Eu, Jane Loo, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Comparative analysis of European and certain Asian approaches to governance often degenerates into simplistic dichotomies based on universal human rights assumptions. This chapter rejects such dualities, ill-informed by theory and historical reflection. The emerging argument is founded on a historical realist approach to theorising difference. Assisted by Polanyi’s double movement, the detailed substantive comparison is preceded by considerations of how recent trends in governing AI have uniformly adopted a countermovement against the dis-embedding of data and technology from the social leading to a risk/responsibility paradigm. From here, a more nuanced reflection of AI governance approaches in the EU and Singapore …

Early Signs The Eu Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism Is Reshaping Eu-India Steel Trade, Gian Luca Vriz, Theodor Florian Cojoianu, Carolyn Fischer, Luca Taschini

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This study examines early signals of the EU CBAM's impact on iron and steel exporters from India by integrating firm-level export data with third-party estimates of manufacturers' emissions and production. Changes in trade flows and pricing during the CBAM reporting phase indicate that high-emission-intensity firms have decreased both their average unit prices and shipment sizes to the EU, while low-emission-intensity firms have not changed shipment behavior and may have benefited from increasing prices. Such supply chain adjustments are in line with EU policy intentions, creating opportunities for low-emission producers while reducing reliance on high-emission suppliers to the EU.

Hlcg: A Hierarchical Lane-Changing Gaming Decision Model For Heterogeneous Traffic Flow On Two-Lane Highways, Tianyi Wang, Chong He, Hao Li, Yixuan Li, Yiming Xu, Yangyang Wang, Junfeng Jiao

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Discretionary lane-changing behavior is one of the most common highway operations, which seriously affects traffic efficiency and safety. Nowadays, connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are advancing rapidly, though not yet fully widespread. As a result, a mixed traffic environment with traditional human-driven vehicles (HDVs) and CAVs will persist for the foreseeable future. To achieve effective automatic lane-changing maneuvers, it’s necessary to propose a lane-changing decision model for heterogeneous traffic flow on two-lane highways. This paper firstly extends longitudinal car-following models based on the intelligent driver model and lateral lane-changing models using quintic polynomial curves to accommodate heterogeneous traffic flow, and …

Multi-Period Risk-Aware Procurement Optimization Under Covid-19 Disruption, Jonathan Chase, Hoong Chuin Lau, Jinfeng Yang, Lu Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Supply chain resilience has been a topic of active research in the operations research and AI communities for several years, but the COVID-19 pandemic threw the frailties of global supply chains into sharp relief. Disruptions and delays caused by fresh outbreaks leading to lockdowns, put severe strain on supply chains in many industries. In this work we develop lockdown-resilient procurement capabilities for a global technology company. First, through analysis of lockdown data from China we develop a logarithmic regression-based lockdown prediction method to complement a supplier risk metric for conventional risks. Second, we develop a multi-period stochastic optimization model that …

Memory-Efficient 4-Bit Preconditioned Stochastic Optimization, Jingyang Li, Kuangyu Ding, Kim-Chuan Toh, Pan Zhou Oct 2025

Memory-Efficient 4-Bit Preconditioned Stochastic Optimization, Jingyang Li, Kuangyu Ding, Kim-Chuan Toh, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Preconditioned stochastic optimization algorithms, exemplified by Shampoo, outperform first-order optimizers by offering theoretical convergence benefits and practical gains in large-scale neural network training. However, they incur substantial memory overhead due to the storage demands of non-diagonal preconditioning matrices. To address this, we introduce 4-bit quantization for Shampoo’s preconditioners. We introduce two key methods: First, we apply Cholesky decomposition followed by quantization of the Cholesky factors, reducing memory usage by leveraging their lower triangular structure while better preserving spectral properties to minimize information loss. To our knowledge, this is the first quantization approach applied to Cholesky factors of preconditioners. Second, we …

Probabilistic Prototype Calibration Of Vision-Language Models For Generalized Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation, Jie Liu, Jiayi Shen, Pan Zhou, Jan-Jakob Sonke, Stratis Gavves Oct 2025

Probabilistic Prototype Calibration Of Vision-Language Models For Generalized Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation, Jie Liu, Jiayi Shen, Pan Zhou, Jan-Jakob Sonke, Stratis Gavves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Generalized Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation (GFSS) aims to extend a segmentation model to novel classes with only a few annotated examples while maintaining performance on base classes. Recently, pretrained vision-language models (VLMs) such as CLIP have been leveraged in GFSS to improve generalization on novel classes through multi-modal prototypes learning. However, existing prototype-based methods are inherently deterministic, limiting the adaptability of learned prototypes to diverse samples, particularly for novel classes with scarce annotations. To address this, we propose FewCLIP, a probabilistic prototype calibration framework over multi-modal prototypes from the pretrained CLIP, thus providing more adaptive prototype learning for GFSS. Specifically, FewCLIP …

Fine-Grained Abnormality Prompt Learning For Zero-Shot Anomaly Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Yew‑Soon Ong, Chunhua Shen, Guansong Pang Oct 2025

Fine-Grained Abnormality Prompt Learning For Zero-Shot Anomaly Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Yew‑Soon Ong, Chunhua Shen, Guansong Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Current zero-shot anomaly detection (ZSAD) methods show remarkable success in prompting large pre-trained visionlanguage models to detect anomalies in a target dataset without using any dataset-specific training or demonstration. However, these methods often focus on crafting/learning prompts that capture only coarse-grained semantics of abnormality, e.g., high-level semantics like ‘damaged’, ‘imperfect’, or ‘defective’ objects. They therefore have limited capability in recognizing diverse abnormality details that deviate from these general abnormal patterns in various ways. To address this limitation, we propose FAPrompt, a novel framework designed to learn Fine-grained Abnormality Prompts for accurate ZSAD. To this end, a novel Compound Abnormality Prompt …

Spd: Shallow Backdoor Protecting Deep Backdoor Against Backdoor Detection, Shunjie Yuan, Xinghua Li, Xuelin Cao, Haiyan Zhang, Mengyao Zhu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Backdoor attacks have revealed the vulnerability of deep neural networks (DNNs), which motivates the development of secure deep learning systems. However, existing backdoor attacks often fail to bypass backdoor detection and human visual inspection, resulting in the exposure of the backdoor implanted in DNNs, which can subsequently be significantly mitigated through pruning or fine-tuning on benign data. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel backdoor attack called SPD (Shallow Protecting Deep), which consists of a deep backdoor in the frequency domain and a shallow backdoor in the pixel domain, where the shallow backdoor acts as a …

Conditional Attribute-Based Pre: Definition And Construction From Lwe, Lisha Yao, Jian Weng, Pengfei Wu, Guofeng Tang, Guomin Yang, Haiyang Xue, Robert H. Deng Oct 2025

Conditional Attribute-Based Pre: Definition And Construction From Lwe, Lisha Yao, Jian Weng, Pengfei Wu, Guofeng Tang, Guomin Yang, Haiyang Xue, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute-based proxy re-encryption (AB-PRE) is a crucial variant of proxy re-encryption. It allows a proxy with a re-encryption key to transform a delegator’s ciphertext associated with an access policy into another ciphertext associated with a new access policy, enabling delegatees with matching attributes to decrypt the transformed ciphertext. However, a key limitation of AB-PRE is that the delegator cannot control which ciphertexts are transformed. As a result, the proxy, once given the re-encryption key, indiscriminately transforms all ciphertexts, effectively switching their underlying policies—an issue known as the all-or-nothing problem. It limits the system’s flexibility and practicality in real-world use cases. In …

Fcad: Feature-Coupled Anisotropic Diffusion For Continuous Graph Learning, Amitoz Azad, Zhiyuan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we propose a novel continuous graph neural network called FCAD (Feature-Coupled Anisotropic Diffusion) for the task of node classification on graphs. Our approach is motivated by the success of feature-coupled anisotropic diffusion PDEs in multivalued image restoration. Our method introduces a total variation regularization-inspired anisotropic term to control diffusion between nodes and incorporates a learnable parameterization for feature coupling during the diffusion process. Our model performs competitively against several GNN baselines for both heterophilous and homophilous graphs, demonstrating notable benefits for heterophilous graphs due to the learnable feature coupling.

Emoshortcuts: Emotionally Expressive Body Augmentation For Social Mixed Reality Avatars, Hyuna Seo, Youngki Lee, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Thivya Kandappu Oct 2025

Emoshortcuts: Emotionally Expressive Body Augmentation For Social Mixed Reality Avatars, Hyuna Seo, Youngki Lee, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Thivya Kandappu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present EmoShortcuts1, a novel social Mixed Reality (MR) framework that enhances emotional expression by dynamically augmenting avatar body gestures to reflect users’ emotional states. While social MR enables immersive remote interactions through avatars, conveying emotions remains challenging due to limitations in head-mounted display (HMD) tracking (e.g., missing lower-body movements, such as stomping or defensive postures), and users’ tendency to deprioritize nonverbal expressions during multitasking. EmoShortcuts addresses these challenges by introducing an augmentation framework that generates expressive body gestures even when users’ physical movements are restricted. We conducted a formative study with 12 participants to identify key challenges in emotional …

Art4math: Handwritten Mathematical Expression Recognition Via Multimodal Sketch Grounding, Yang Zhou, Jin Wang, Yuxiao Zhang, Kaixiang Huang, Guodong Lu, Jingru Yang, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Handwritten Mathematical Expression Recognition (HMER) remains a challenging task due to the structural complexity of mathematical notation and the ambiguity of handwritten symbols-e.g., ''ρ'' vs. ''p'' or ''B'' vs. ''β''. While stroke-based models offer disambiguation via temporal cues, most existing methods are constrained by coarse modality fusion and a lack of fine-grained cross-modal alignment, further hindered by limited annotated data. We introduce Art for Math (Art4Math), a novel framework that leverages the structural richness of human sketches to enhance HMER through fine-grained, modality-aware learning. Art4Math follows a two-stage training paradigm: Art Grounding (A-Grd) and Math Decoding (M-Dec). In A-Grd, the …
