Enhanced Atmospheric Oxidation Capacity And Associated Ozone Increases During Covid-19 Lockdown In The Yangtze River Delta, Yu Wang, Shengqiang Zhu, Jinlong Ma, Juanyong Shen, Pengfei Wang, Peng Wang, Hongliang Zhang

Faculty Publications

Aggressive air pollution control in China since 2013 has achieved sharp decreases in fine particulate matter (PM2.5), along with increased ozone (O-3) concentrations. Due to the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), China imposed nationwide restriction, leading to large reductions in economic activities and associated emissions. In particular, large decreases were found in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions (>50%) from transportation. However, O-3 increased in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), which cannot be fully explained by changes in NOx and volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions. In this study, the Community Multi-scale Air Quality model was used to investigate O-3 increase …

Study Of Parity Sheaves Arising From Graded Lie Algebras, Tamanna Chatterjee May 2021

Study Of Parity Sheaves Arising From Graded Lie Algebras, Tamanna Chatterjee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Let $G$ be a complex, connected, reductive, algebraic group, and $\chi:\mb{C}^\times \to G$ be a fixed cocharacter that defines a grading on $\mf{g}$, the Lie algebra of $G$. Let $G_0$ be the centralizer of $\chi(\mb{C}^\times)$. In this dissertation, we study $G_0$-equivariant parity sheaves on $\mf{g}_n$, under some assumptions on the field $\Bbbk$ and the group $G$. The assumption on $G$ holds for $GL_n$ and for any $G$, it recovers results of Lusztig\cite{Lu} in characteristic $0$. The main result is that every parity sheaf occurs as a direct summand of the parabolic induction of some cuspidal pair.

Modeling Hydraulic Fracturing Initiation And Propagation In Porous Rock Formationsl, Chang Huang May 2021

Modeling Hydraulic Fracturing Initiation And Propagation In Porous Rock Formationsl, Chang Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hydraulic fracturing has long been introduced to the oil and gas industry since the early nineteenth century for both reservoir characterization and reservoir stimulation. Despite the progress made in the last two decades, many challenges still have not been tackled regarding not only the propagation problem but also the initiation problem due to its complexity. The dissertation is divided into two stages, i.e., before and after fracture initiation. The first stage of the research aimed at improving the accuracy in solving the poro-mechanical response of wellbore during fluid injection before a tensile fracture occurs, which is crucial to determine the …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Variable Magnetic Field Gradients On Soot And Co Emissions From Non-Premixed Hydrocarbon Flames, Edison Ekperechukwu Chukwuemeka May 2021

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Variable Magnetic Field Gradients On Soot And Co Emissions From Non-Premixed Hydrocarbon Flames, Edison Ekperechukwu Chukwuemeka

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The interaction of the paramagnetic species in a combustion process with the mag- netic field placed in the vicinity of non-premixed flames affects the characteristics of the non-premixed flames - flame height and flame lift-off height. However, the effect of this magnetic interaction on the pollutants generated by the flame is unknown.

In general, pollutant formation is promoted in most combustion systems due to in- complete combustion of the hydrocarbon due to improper mixing. Since paramagnetic combustion species such as O2, O, OH, etc interacts with magnetic fields and possess a preferential motion direction, imposing magnetic field on non-premixed flames …

We present the systematic spectral analyses of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor during its first ten years of operation. This catalog contains two types of spectra: time-integrated spectral fits and spectral fits at the brightest time bin, from 2297 GRBs, resulting in a compendium of over 18,000 spectra. The four different spectral models used for fitting the spectra were selected based on their empirical importance to the shape of many GRBs. We describe in detail our procedure and criteria for the analyses, and present the bulk results in the form of parameter distributions both in …

R Coronae Borealis Star Evolution: Simulating 3d Merger Events To 1d Stellar Evolution Including Large-Scale Nucleosynthesis, Bradley Munson, Emmanouil Chatzopoulos, Juhan Frank, Geoffrey Clayton, Courtney Crawford, Pavel A. Denissenkov, Falk Herwig

Faculty Publications

R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars are rare hydrogen-deficient carbon-rich variable supergiants thought to be the result of dynamically unstable white dwarf mergers. We attempt to model RCB stars through all the relevant timescales by simulating a merger event in Octo-tiger, a 3D adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamics code, and mapping the post-merger object into MESA, a 1D stellar evolution code. We then post-process the nucleosynthesis on a much larger nuclear reaction network to study the enhancement of s-process elements. We present models that match observations or previous studies in most surface abundances, isotopic ratios, early evolution, and lifetimes. We also …

Improving Memory Forensics Through Emulation And Program Analysis, Ryan Dominick Maggio Mar 2021

Improving Memory Forensics Through Emulation And Program Analysis, Ryan Dominick Maggio

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Memory forensics is an important tool in the hands of investigators. However, determining if a computer is infected with malicious software is time consuming, even for experts. Tasks that require manual reverse engineering of code or data structures create a significant bottleneck in the investigative workflow. Through the application of emulation software and symbolic execution, these strains have been greatly lessened, allowing for faster and more thorough investigation. Furthermore, these efforts have reduced the barrier for forensic investigation, so that reasonable conclusions can be drawn even by non-expert investigators. While previously Volatility had allowed for the detection of malicious hooks …

Optomechanical Quantum Entanglement, Kahlil Y. Dixon Mar 2021

Optomechanical Quantum Entanglement, Kahlil Y. Dixon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As classical technology approaches its limits, exploration of quantum technologies is critical. Quantum optics will be the basis of various cutting-edge research and applications in quantum technology. In particular, quantum optics quite efficacious when applied to quantum networks and the quantum internet. Quantum Optomechanics, a subfield of quantum optics, contains some novel methods for entanglement generation. These entanglement production methods exploit the noise re-encoding process, which is most often associated with creating unwanted phase noise in optical circuits. Using the adapted two-photon formalism and experimental results, we simulate (in an experimentally viable parameter space) optomechanical entanglement generation experiments. These simulations …

Effects Of Marsh Management In Coastal Marsh Impoundments On Marsh Vertical Accretion In The Face Of Sea Level Rise., Scott P. Graham Mar 2021

Effects Of Marsh Management In Coastal Marsh Impoundments On Marsh Vertical Accretion In The Face Of Sea Level Rise., Scott P. Graham

LSU Master's Theses

Many coastal marshes are managed for wildlife through the use of levees and water control structures. Management techniques such as water manipulation, herbicide application, and controlled burns are used to set back succession and facilitate recruitment of annual plant species, which are highly sought after by many wildlife. These marsh impoundments alter or prevent natural tidal exchange, which might alter or prevent sediment and nutrient inputs to the marsh. Although these management techniques are effective in managing for wildlife, there are few studies comparing vertical accretion between managed and unmanaged marshes. Vertical accretion is important because it allows coastal wetlands …

Adsorption And Transport Of Colloids At Interface And In Bulk, Jingyun Lee Mar 2021

Adsorption And Transport Of Colloids At Interface And In Bulk, Jingyun Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Colloids are suspensions of microscopic insoluble particles dispersed in a continuum phase such as liquid or gas. Colloids are found in our everyday life from food and cosmetic industries to pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Depending on a global minimum of the free-energy landscape, colloidal suspensions can be classified as two major classes: equilibrium or active colloidal system. This Ph.D dissertation presents strategies to engineer equilibrium self-assembled structures and out-of-equilibrium active matter using various interparticle forces.

First, we introduce the means to promote the equilibrium self-assembled structures driven by adsorption of colloids at interface. Typically, adsorption of colloids at interface is …

Hydro-Morphodynamics Of Sandy Coastal Embayments, Shamim Murshid Mar 2021

Hydro-Morphodynamics Of Sandy Coastal Embayments, Shamim Murshid

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the hydro-morphodynamics of two major components of a sandy coastal environment: tidal inlets and embayment shorelines. In the first study, I focused on the evolution of inlet geometry by compiling and analyzing a database with 226 inlets worldwide with a special attention given to their width to depth ratio (or aspect ratio). I found that the aspect ratio has a weak dependency on tidal range and wave height, and they lie in different ranges for three types of tidal inlets: engineered, natural single-thread, and natural compound. I also developed a 2D hydro-morphodynamic model of an idealized barrier-inlet …

Primordial Power Spectrum From A Matter-Ekpyrotic Bounce Scenario In Loop Quantum Cosmology, Bao-Fei Li, Sahil Saini, Parampreet Singh Mar 2021

Primordial Power Spectrum From A Matter-Ekpyrotic Bounce Scenario In Loop Quantum Cosmology, Bao-Fei Li, Sahil Saini, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

A union of matter bounce and ekpyrotic scenarios is often studied in an attempt to combine the most promising features of these two models. Since nonperturbative quantum geometric effects in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) result in natural bouncing scenarios without any violation of energy conditions or fine tuning, an investigation of matter-ekpyrotic bounce scenario is interesting to explore in this quantum gravitational setting. In this work, we explore this unified phenomenological model for a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaistre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe in LQC filled with dust and a scalar field in an ekpyrotic scenario like negative potential. Background dynamics and the power …

Topological Properties In Selected Transition-Metal Pnictides And Chalcogenides, Ramakanta Chapai Mar 2021

Topological Properties In Selected Transition-Metal Pnictides And Chalcogenides, Ramakanta Chapai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

With the continued discovery of topological properties in condensed matter, several members of transition-metal pnictides and chalcogenides (TMPCs) compounds have been testbeds for various exotic particles such as Dirac, Weyl and Majorana fermions. In this dissertation, we have chosen four material systems: PdSb2, PdTe2, PtTe2, and PdTe in the TMPC family, and explored their physical properties under a variety of stimuli (e.g. temperature, magnetic field, and pressure). We examined the topological behavior of these selected systems by analyzing the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations observed in the magnetization and magnetic torque.

From our magneto-transport …
