Rates of Nitrogen on Wheat, Oats and Barley - Soil Test. In this, the third year of this programme, 44 sites were selected and soil sampled during February - March. Thirty seven of these trials consisted of four replications on wheat only and the other seven consisted of three replications on wheat, oats and barley. All reps were soil sampled separately. In each rep. of the 37 trials, 20 samples were taken to 10 cm depth with pogo stick samplers. In the. other seven trials 50 samples per rep. were taken. In general six factors affect the occurence of groundwater; rainfall, topography, rock type, rock structurs, vegetation, and local evaporation.

Variation in even one of these can affect the potential yield of a bore or well, the groundwater salinity, and even whether any groundwater occurs at all.

The continued demand for, and use of trickle irrigation is proof of the inherent potential and performance of this form of irrigation.

Originally it was used in glasshouses and nurseries but it is now widely adapted to orchards, vegetable and other horticultural small crops and home gardens.

Although research is being actively pursued in the design and use of trickle irrigation it is now beyond the experimental stage as a technique and is an accepted and proven technique of watering many types of crop.

Saffron thistle is a primary noxious weed and is widespread throughout the drier parts of Western Australia. When growing in pasture its prickly growth habit discourages animals from grazing amongst it so that its presence results in the loss of feed. In crops it reduces yield and results in dockage when seed is found in harvested grain.

The significance of the Lake as a Straw-necked Ibis (Thresktornts spinicollis) nesting rookery is emphasised and recommendations are made for its acquisition and future management.

The number and area of Nature Reserves in Western Australia has grown rapidly in recent times. At 80 June 1975 there were 491 reserves with an area of 5 103 037 hectares. By 31 December 1975, with the inclusion of reserves for the Conservation of Flora in the definition of a Nature Reserve, there were 900 reserves totalling 5 317 965 ha. With the implementation of the Environmental Protection Authority's recommendations based on the Conservation Through Reserves Committee's Report on Systems 4, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 the Nature Reserve System will jump to 985 reserves with an area …

The fishery for the western rock lobster* is one of the most important single fisheries in Australia and an important export earner for the State. The fishery is governed by a complex set of regulations which have been reviewed by Bowen (1971) and which are designed to limit the total effort to acceptable levels and to enforce a legal minimum size. It is thus important to constantly monitor the state of the fishery both to ensure that the effort is remaining within the accepted limits and that the regulations are adequately performing their function of maintaining reasonably stable catches. The island has some unusual faunal and floral features not yet recorded for the Archipelago. These are discussed.

Historically, the Western Australian production of Australian herring (Arrtpts georgtanus) has fluctuated from year to year in response to changing market demand. Prior to 1968, the annual catch taken by professional fishermen was relatively stable, ranging from 200 000 kg (approx. 500 000 pounds) to 450 000 kg (approx. 1 000 000 pounds). From 1968, commercial production has risen to a peak of 1 187 440 kg (2 617 857 pounds) recorded in 1972/73 (Table I). Research over the past 10 years has shown that it is technically possible to seal many leaking farm dams. In some situations a cheap chemical treatment is effective but in most cases it is cheaper to construct a replacement dam.

This article reviews the situation in western Australia and outlines some of the methods used for sealing dams.

Shallow-rooted vegetable crops growing on sandy soils in hot, often windy summer weather, pose a difficult watering problem for most Western Australian vegetable growers.

Irregularities in wetting patterns are common. Wind effects are seldom taken into account in system design. The increasing popularity of knocker-type sprinklers makes these considerations particularily important.

While wheat is still generally the most profitable crop in Western Australia the relative profitability of barley and linseed has risen in the last few years; in southern areas they are likely to be at least as profitable as wheat.

Oats has fallen in profitability relative to wheat, and grain legumes have suffered a marked fall. Yields of these grains have increased with the introduction of new varieties but their price increases have not kept pace with those of wheat and barley. In 1975/76 two varieties of sunflower, Hysun 10 and Hysun 20, as well as Safflower (Gila) were grown in a large alternative crop demonstration. Results were sufficiently good to warrant more and closer examination. This led to the present variety trial using varieties suggested by Mr. M. Poole. The aim was to evaluate six sunflower varieties and one safflower. The work was carried out in the light of reduced profitability of peas, beans and some fruit crops.
