Onslow Barley........ a new breed of barley for the southern high rainfall areas (see map VH,H4 &H5). Suited to May plantings, Onslow is the first barley developed specifically for the long growing seasons in these areas.

For the first time barley growers have a variety designed for those 4 t/ha plus yields which research shows are possible with early sowing.

Onslow is the first of a new breed of barley cultivars developed in Western Australia specifically for the southern high rainfall areas which have a long growing season.

Most of the soils are grey and brown solonized soils. The subsoils, to about 2 m, are calcareous sandy clays with limestone rubble, but there are three main surface variations: sandy surfaced, 5-30 cm deep, passing abruptly to the sandy clay subsoil with lime nodules. The Circle Valley sand and Scaddan sand are major types. Scaddan sand has a domed subsoil clay. Powdery calcareous sandy loam; and clay loam and clay with some lime in the subsoil, but less than in 1 and 2.

Data from a research vessel survey in September and October 1987 and commercial catch records have been used to assess the pearl oyster and prawn stocks along the Broome coastline between 17°S and 18°S latitudes. Observations made by pearl divers indicated that the survey zone contained commercially significant quantities of unfished pearl oysters particularly in the depth range 10 to 27 m, but also extending out to 44 m depth. The pearl oysters in the survey zone were found to be predominantly mature animals and appeared to be part of the now lightly fished deep water spawning population extending from …

The Carlton Plains covers approximately 11,750 ha midway between Wyndham and Kununurra on the northern bank of the Ord River in the Shire of East Kimberley. The survey area is divided into two geomorphic units, the clay plains and the levee areas. Soils of the former generally belong to the Cununurra family of cracking clays while those of the levees are generally more variable and of medium texture.Samples of the major soils were collected for mechanical analysis and basic chemical analysis.Sodium chloride percentages and exchangeable sodium percentages are both high on the clay soils of the western plain. The Western Australian Registered Field Crop Scheme is an industry cooperative scheme entered into voluntarily by the participants. Agriculture Western Australia, through its AGWEST Plant Laboratories business unit, administers the scheme and supervises industry agreed production and marketing guidelines.

The Registered Field Crop Scheme differs from certified seed schemes by reduced direct supervision of the production by Agriculture Western Australia.

Producers agree to abide by the following rules and are responsible for the correctness of the final product to meet the quality descriptions for each seed lot as described on the appropriate seed analysis statement and in these rules.

This bibliography has been compiled as part of a programme to develop new and improved techniques for the insect disinfestation of export cut-flowers and cut-foliage. The objective of the programme is to identify the most effective disinfestation treatments. Suitable treatments should kill insects in the flowers without directly injuring the flowers or reducing their postharvest life.

The bibliography presents references relating to the disinfestation of ornamental material (i.e. cut-flowers, cut-foliage, and potted plants). However, it also includes references on disinfestation of fruit, vegetables, and stored grain where this information has some relevance to the disinfestation of ornamental materials. In the past, resource planning by Government authorities in Western Australia has been concentrated in urban areas. The rural areas were referred to as non-urban and planning outside of country townsites was confined to special rural zones. These zones were determined by the State authority (Town Planning Department) and were intended to limit the extent of farm fragmentation so as to control servicing costs and possible conflict.

In October 1987 an Interim Report was issued to enable the present licence holders, the Licensed Pearl Producers' Association and other who had expressed an interest to the Committee, to consider the interim recommendations and , if necessary, make written comment to the Committee.

The Committee considered the comments it received. It now presents its Final Report to the Western Australian Minister for Fisheries, the Hon. Julian Grill and the Federal Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, the Hon. John Kerin.

Location: East Chapman Research Station

Inoculated and lime pelleted seed was hand sown into 3m rows at 0.25 g/m. All the medics were inoculated with WSM 540 which may have been less effective with some of the M. littoralis and M. tornata varieties. The 1988 season was very good in terms of frequency and amount of rainfall which is reflected in the high seed yields compared to 1987.

Half the trial site was cultivated to 30cm at the break of the season and the whole site was normally cultivated. Weeds were then sprayed with Roundup at 1 1/ha prior to seeding with an eight run cone seeder. The plots were kept weed free during the year by hand weeding. The root distribution was calculated from soil cores taken in 20 cm increments on 20 August. Aphid cortrol consisted of spraying every two weeks with Pirimor at 140 g/ha between July and October. Permeability, conductivity, conductance and resistance are important parameters in the description of water movement in soils and plants. These terms are related, but not synonymous. Permeability is only a function of the flow pathgeometry of the medium, while conductivity also depends on the fluid involved. Conductance, in addition, takes the size of the medium into account. Resistance is simply the inverse ofconductance. By applying the definition of resistance, it isshown that Darcy's law and Ohm's law are equivalent. The plots were hand sown at 2 g/m2 of inoculated and lime pelleted seed. The medics were inoculated with WSM540 which may have been ineffective on some of the M. littoralis and M. tornata varieties. The time taken to form ripe pods was monitored to gain some extra measure of maturity besides flowering time for comparing wide ranges of species. The ripening time involved was very similar over all the varieties, averaging out to 44 days after the flower opens. What appears to be a more important factor when considering maturity is the …
