This report presents land resource mapping and land capability assessments for rural residential and associated agricultural activities at a scale of 1:50,000 over 100,000 ha of rural land in Perth's eastern metropolitan hills area. The study area is bounded to the west by the Great Northern, Albany, Roe and South Western highways, and extends north, east and south to the boundary of the Perth metropolitan area. Using the broad framework of landform-soil associations defined by Churchward and McArthur (1980), discrete mapping units have been delineated by reference to landform and soil characteristics likely to affect future land uses. The sandplain region on the south coast has predominately sandy soils which are subject to erosive winds when ground cover is likely to be scarce. This can often result in production losses of crop and pasture. There is concern that wind erosion will lead to the depletion of the soil resource in the long term. The model is multi-period linear programming with a planning horizon of 10 years. Effects of wind erosion on production can be imposed on the model for the first five years after the erosion event.

It is generally acknowledged that more competitive marketing of Australian fisheries and aquaculture harvests requires closer attention to post-harvest technology. Historically, these products have been marketed in a variety of forms (e.g., for freshwater crayfish:- boiled fresh, boiled frozen, whole or tails, and live). Some of these forms present a product of actual, or perceived, poorer quality to the retailer and consumer and, thereby, obtain low prices.

Freshwater crayfish can survive out of water for extended periods and, so, can be economically transported alive to the (overseas) restaurant chef. This live product commands the very highest price for the grower. …

Legume herbage mass was maximized after two or three years application of 50 kg/ha double superphosphate for both Verano and Fitzroy on Red earth soils and for Fitzroy on Yellow lateritic soils. There was increased production of Verano up to the maximum fertilizer level. Both varieties responded in the second year to residual P following application in the first year but there were no responses in subsequent years.

A study involving the documentation of the extent and floristic composition of patches of native vegetation left uncleared by agricultural development is described. Floristic regions were defined in the study area by detailed analysis of the floristic data. The concentration of the major conservation reserves in only a few of these regions left the floristic variation of most of these regions poorly represented conservation reserves. About 13 percent of the private property remains uncleared.

Groundwaters were found to be 10 m below the floor of the ancestral playa lake in Brennand's catchment. They were extremely saline. A groundwater flow system was not established on much of the catchment. Flow was observed to be occurring from recharge areas near the playa lakes towards the midslopes of the catchment. Flow was apparently restricted from leaving Brennand's catchment because of obstruction to groundwaters created by dolerite dykes.

The Ivanhoe Plain was divided into two geomorphic provinces. The principal difference between the provinces is the time during which pedogenesis occurred. The crcking clay soils of the northern province are generally more highly leached than their younger counterparts in the southern province. Sixteen land units are identified as distinct from soil units. These units give cognizance to vegetation and topographical features as well as soils.

The Jerdacuttup catchment on the south coast of Western Australia has a number of significant land degradation problems. A soil-landform map of the catchment was produced at a scale of 1:50,000. The map units are a combination of landform and soil type. A land capability assessment was undertaken for five land uses; improved annual pastures, perennial pastures, lucerne, cereal cropping and lupins, using a five class classification.

To date promising later maturing cultivars such as Concord (in particular), Progrow, Aristocrat have consistently outyielded the standard early maturing cultivar Wimmera during the early winter period and in spring. These later maturing varieties have the potential to more fully utilise the whole of the growing season and to be conserved as hay during drier spring weather, whilst still retaining digestibility, protein and metabolisable energy. The freshwater crayfish Cherax tenuimanus, called marron, provides an important recreational fishery in the south-west of Western Australia. The annual fishing catch and fishing effort have been monitored by a log book research programme and an end-of season telephone survey since the 1971/72 season.

Following the 1986/87 fishing season, the fishery remained closed for two seasons (1987/88 and 1988/89) to permit stocks to recover from the effects of high total fishing effort and unfavourable water conditions over the preceding seasons

This report presents information on the probable original introduction of the eastern Australian yabbie to farm dams in the Wheat-belt Region of the southwest of Western Australia (in 1932 at Narembeen); the probable type of yabbie (the "White Yabby", Cherax albidus Clark 1936 ) and source (Miram Swamp in the Victorian Wimmera); and, in 1985, the first voicing of concern over the spread of yabbies to natural habitats, particularly in the higher rainfall region of the southwest, together with current national and international concerns and advice on introduced aquatic species.

The 1985/86 annual catch of the western rock lobster Panulirus cygnus, totalled 7,191,968kg (Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) ), a drop of 1,774,497kg (19.8 per cent) on the 1984/85 season. The value of the 1985/86 catch was approximately $94M based on ABS figures. This drop in catch was almost entirely the result of lower puerulus (first post larval stage, approximately 9 to 11 months old) settlement three to four years before (i.e. 1982/83 and 1981/82). The investigation revealed that a deep, brackish to saline groundwater system and dolerite dyke, contained within the saprolite were responsible for the secondary salinity; the annual discharge of water and salt at the seep from the damp groundwater system was about 2800 kL and 17 tonnes respectively; and the water-tables were not rising and that the most appropriate management of the site was to plant salt tolerant forage plants in combination with trees.
