We consider the existence of radially symmetric non-negative solutions for the boundary value problem

where $ \lambda > 0,f(0) < 0$ (non-positone), $ f' \geq 0$ and $ f$ is superlinear. We establish existence of non-negative solutions for $ \lambda $ small which extends some work of our previous paper on non-positone problems, where we considered the case $ N = 1$. Our work also proves a recent conjecture by Joel Smoller and Arthur Wasserman.

We report novel femtosecond time‐resolved measurements performed on staggered type II GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum well structures. Photoexcited electrons were determined to transfer from the Γ valley of the GaAs layers to the X valleys of the AlAs in 100 and 400 fs for 8‐ and 11‐monolayer‐thick GaAs samples, respectively.

A Theoretical Study Of Models For X2y2 Zintl Ions, Robert J. Cave, Ernest R. Davidson, Philippe Sautet, Enric Canadell, Odile Eisenstein

Ab initio and extended Hückel calculations have been used to discuss the bonding scheme in X₂Y₂ neutral and ionic main group clusters. A qualitative analysis suggests that two different electron counts, 20 and 22, are possible for the butterfly structures of these systems. This results from two orbital crossings in the correlation diagram for the tetrahedral (T_d) -> butterfly (C_2v) -> square-planar (D_2h) transformation. Detailed ab initio computations substantiate this analysis and show that the 20-electron butterfly structure becomes increasingly favored over the tetrahedral one in X₂Y₂ clusters when the 2 atoms have increasing electronegativity difference. …

Continuum Model Of Thin-Film Deposition And Growth, Andrew J. Bernoff, Seth Lichter

A continuum theory for the deposition and growth of solid films is presented. The theory is developed in a coordinate-independent manner and so incorporates the fully nonlinear physics. The evolution of the film is modeled in three steps. First, the adsorption of atoms in the incident beam is modeled as a ballistic process. Second, the random motion of the adatoms is treated as a diffusive process. Finally, sticking of adatoms to the film occurs as a Poisson process. The resulting system of differential equations is examined in several parameter limits. The diffusively dominated limit appears similar to zone 1 of …

Nonnegative Solutions To A Semilinear Dirichlet Problem In A Ball Are Positive And Radially Symmetric, Alfonso Castro, Ratnasingham Shivaji

We prove that nonnegative solutions to a semilinear Dirichlet problem in a ball are positive, and hence radially symmetric. In particular, this answers a question in [3] where positive solutions were proven to be radially symmetric. In section 4 we provide a sufficient condition on the geometry of the domain which ensures that nonnegative solutions are positive in the interior.

Turnpike Structures For Optimal Maneuvers, Arthur T. Benjamin

This dissertation is concerned with problems of optimally maneuvering a collection of objects ("pieces") from one location to another, subject to various restrictions on the allowable movements. We illustrate and prove that when the "distance" from the origin to the destination is large, and the movement rules and environment satisfy certain "homogeneity" properties, there exist near-optimal trajectories with very special (turnpike) structure.

Random Sequential Absorption On Graphs, Nicholas Pippenger

This paper analyzes a process whereby the vertices of a graph are considered in a random sequence,and each considered vertex is “occupied” unless it or an adjacent vertex has previously been occupied. The process continues until no more vertices can be occupied, at which point the “jamming limit” has been reached. The case in which the graph is regular (so that every vertex has degree $d\geqq 2$ and has “few short cycles” is treated. In particular, the results apply to infinite regular trees, to finite graphs obtained from them by forming quotient graphs, and to random regular graphs.

The Prey Of Common Barn Owls (Tyto Alba) In Dry Limestone Scrub Forest Of Southern Jamaica, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Kimball L. Garrett

A collection of common barn-owl (Tyto alba Scopoli) pellets from caves on the Portland Ridge of Jamaica reveals that whereas introduced rodents constitute approximately 90% of the total prey, bats and birds are also frequent prey items. Of the bats, frugivorous species predominate with Ariteus flavescens Gray and Artibeus jamaicensis Leach accounting for the largest portion of the bat prey. Insectivorous bats are markedly under-represented with respect to the known diversity of insectivorous species in the habitat.

Viscous Cross-Waves: An Analytical Treatment, Andrew J. Bernoff, L. P. Kwok, Seth Lichter

Viscous effects on the excitation of cross‐waves in a semi‐infinite box of finite depth and width are considered. A formalism using matched asymptotic expansions and an improved method of computing the solvability condition is used to derive the relative contributions of the free‐surface, sidewall, bottom, and wavemaker viscous boundary layers. This analysis yields an expression for the damping coefficient previously incorporated on heuristic grounds. In addition, three new contributions are found: a viscous detuning of the resonant frequency, a slow spatial variation in the coupling to the progressive wave, and a viscous correction to the wavemaker boundary condition. In previous work on the treatment of correlation in molecular systems we have applied a multireference version of second‐order Hylleraas variational perturbation theory. The choice made for the partitioning of H treated the interactions between the correlating functions to infinite order and gave the corrections to the wave function to first order. The method was shown to be accurate in many cases, but became less so when near degeneracies occurred between the reference energy and other eigenvalues of H0. Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part Ii, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

In Part I, published last month, we presented a successful classroom implementation plan for integrating educational software into elementary school classrooms. Implementing educational software successfully into classrooms is an essential prerequisite to achieving the second goal of the present research-evaluating how much students learned by using specific software programs. In Part II, we will measure how effective eight software programs were at teaching fifth grade students new fraction concepts and spelling words. In addition, we will examine the validity of teacher and student software ratings based on the effectiveness of each program.
