The purpose of this work was to determine the impact of quantum dot size on ionization potential and to determine how the presence of carbonyl-based ligands affect the ionization potential of lead sulfide quantum dot systems. Ionization potential (IP) is defined as the energy required to remove an electron from an atom, molecule, or material. IP helps scientists determine how reactive the material of interest is, which is crucial information when manufacturing nanomaterials. However there is no baseline record of the climate mitigation currently performed by the trees on Pomona’s campus through carbon storage. In this thesis, we analyze various types of Latin squares, their solvability and embeddings. We examine the results by M. Hall, P. Hall, Ryser and Evans first, and apply our understandings to develop an algorithm that the determines the minimum possible embedding of an unsolvable Latin square. We also study Latin squares with missing diagonals in detail.

Photons carry momentum. When a tightly-focused beam of photons hit a particle, they transfer some of their momentum to the particle, exerting a force. Optical tweezers take advantage of this phenomenon to trap (or “tweeze”) a spherical bead just after the focus of a diverging laser beam, creating a potential well that pulls in beads. In this thesis, I predict the force exerted on trapped beads and measure the actual force using an optical tweezers setup that I built. Prairies were once the largest ecosystem in North America, but agriculture and settlement has destroyed up to 99% of their pre-colonization extent. Prairie restorations are a strategy to recover the biodiversity and carbon sequestration functions of these grasslands, but typically occur in isolated strips between agricultural fields. My thesis analyzes how effective prairie restorations in the Liberty Prairie (northeastern Illinois) are at recovering the diversity of the prairie soil microbiome, focusing on verrucomicrobia abundance, alpha diversity, and soil physical characteristics.

Gorgonian deep-sea corals (DSCs) are biologically linked to ocean carbon cycling converting ocean carbon to gorgonin and calcite in their skeletons. As such, gorgonian DSCs likely accumulate and store carbon in their skeleton throughout their lifespans, acting as carbon sinks on historic timescales. Yet, DSC carbon storage hasn’t been investigated to date. This study evaluates gorgonian DSC carbon storage capacity through an evaluation of the carbon stored by Alaskan Primnoa pacifica corals. Ubiquitination and other post-translational modifications play a major role in the proliferation of many neurodegenerative diseases, developmental disorders, and cancers, and as such are subjects of recently increased biochemical interest. Expanding upon such research, this study confirmed a robust method of ubiquitin expression and purification, then used 15N-1H HSQC to analyze ubiquitin samples containing varying concentrations of a deep cavitand with affinity for lysine and arginine side chains. In the pure ubiquitin spectrum, arginine side chain chemical shifts were detected in the nitrogen 80-85 ppm range and lysine side chain signals were undetected. causal relationships. One of the themes of this thesis is to show methods of
determining causation. The second theme follows a saying in mathematics,
"correlation does not imply causation". We will also discuss situations where
correlation does not even imply correlation itself. These cases are described
by Simpson’s paradox in an exploration of different areas of mathematics

In this thesis, we develop the Kubota-Leopoldt Riemann zeta function in the p-adic integers. We follow Neil Koblitz's interpolation of Riemann zeta, using Bernoulli measures and p-adic integrals. The underlying goal is to better understand p-adic expansions and computations. We finish by connecting the Riemann zeta function to L-functions and their p-adic interpolations.

Ir2(dimen)42+ (dimen = 1,8-diisocyanomenthane) has been studied extensively as model compound to better understand catalysis of photochemical reactions. Although Ir2(dimen)42+ has been used primarily to observe the photophysical changes of metal-metal transitions, it gives great insight into the transitions that allow other d8-d8 metal complexes to undergo photochemical processes and generate hydrogen gas. The large visible range by which Ir2(dimen)42+ (1) can be electronically excited in solution is indicative of its two solution phase ground states, which interestingly have been hypothesized to resemble two unique packing structures observed in the powder state. This thesis begins with the local history of the Liberty Prairie, the land where I conducted the ecological field-work that I later discuss in my second thesis on soil microbiome diversity (“Examining Soil Microbial Diversity in Transition Zones Between Corn Fields and Restored Prairie in the Upper Midwest"). In June 2021, Major League Baseball cracked down on the use of foreign substances by pitchers on the ball (Castrovince, 2021a). It is believed the sticky substances give the pitchers an unfair advantage over batters since they increase spin rate, consequently, through the Magnus Effect, creating more movement or “break” in the pitch, making it harder to hit. On May 6th, 2020, after extensive public comment and review, the Department of Education published the final rule for the new Title IX regulations, which took effect in schools on August 14th. Title IX is the nearly fifty year old piece of the Education Amendments that prohibits sexual discrimination in federally funded schools. This thesis addresses the question of the preferred factorization of the quantum mechanical Hilbert Space into sub parts. Specifically, I computationally implement streamlined aspects of the recent “in principle” proposal of Carroll and Singh in their paper Quantum Mereology: Factorizing Hilbert Space into Subsystems with Quasi-Classical Dynamics. The goal is to link the selection of a preferred tensor product factorization to the appearance of quasi-classical behavior in this preferred factorization. The repeated occurrence of episodic iceberg-discharge events and abrupt climate change in the North Atlantic Ocean is well-documented for the late Quaternary period. However, much of the evidence for these periods known as Heinrich Events comes from the subpolar region, where deposition can be dominated by ice-rafted debris (IRD) and overwhelm other oceanographic and climatic indicators. Thus, the following analysis of coarse sediment from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Core Site U1313 (41°0.0'N, 32°57.42'W) evaluated ocean cooling related to ice-rafting, water mass migration, and climate change over the approximate last 100,000 years. A combinatorial proof of Wigner’s semicircle law for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) is presented using techniques from free probability. Motivating examples taken from the symmetric Bernoulli ensemble and the GUE show the distribution of eigenvalues of sample n x n matrices approaching Wigner’s semicircle as n get large. The concept of crossing and non-crossing pairings is developed, along with proofs of Wick’s Formula for real and complex Gaussians. It is shown that Wigner’s semicircle distribution has moments given by the Catalan numbers. Alkanes are some of the most abundant organic molecules, yet currently there are no efficient ways of directly converting them to more functional molecules. One viable method of direct functionalization is C–H bond activation by transition metal catalysts. The focus of this research has been the synthesis of a new Pt(II) pincer complex to be used in mechanistic investigations of C–H activation, as well as the beginnings of those investigations. In this paper, I will look at a mass-spring system that can be described by a Hamiltonian. In most systems described by a Hamiltonian, the energy levels will be quantized, and the system will be able to jump between them. However, many methods of finding these jumps aren’t well-suited to numerical analysis. Stentor are large, unicellular ciliates of the Heterotricha order. They live in both freshwater and marine habitats and are mostly found in ponds. I studied Stentor polymorphus, which is a species of Stentor only recently discovered to be lab culturable. They range from 0.5-1.5mm in length and are unusual because they live with endosymbiotic algae and are much more likely than other, more widely studied, species of Stentor to form aggregates while they are eating. An ontological exploration of consciousness and how it is related to the body and other aspects of physical reality. Framed by David Chalmers' conception of "The Hard Problem", we begin from a physicalist perspective to discuss the problem of mental causation, which is the inquiry of how the mind communicates and interacts with the body. From here we examine the employment of identity reduction to functionalize and therefore physically explain mentality. Modern processors use architecture like caches, branch predictors, and speculative execution in order to maximize computation throughput. For instance, recently accessed memory can be stored in a cache so that subsequent accesses take less time. Unfortunately microarchitecture-based side channel attacks can utilize this cache property to enable unauthorized memory accesses. The Spectre attack is a recent example of this attack.

Although dynamical systems have a multitude of classical uses in physics and applied mathematics, new research in theoretical computer science shows that dynamical systems can also be used as a highly secure method of encrypting data. Properties of Lorenz and similar systems of equations yield chaotic outputs that are good at masking the underlying data both physically and mathematically. This paper aims to show how Lorenz systems may be used to encrypt text and image data, as well as provide a framework for how physical mechanisms may be built using these properties to transmit encrypted wave signals.

In this work, we aim to present an optimization model for vaccine pricing in a two-economy duopoly. This model observes the price dynamics between a high income country and a low income country that procure vaccinations through PAHO. This model is formulated to provide insights on optimal pricing strategy for PAHO to ultimately increase vaccine accessibility to low income countries. The objective is to satisfy the public demand at the lowest price possible, while providing enough profit for the vaccine manufacturers to stay in business. Using non-linear integer programming, the model results show that cross-subsidization occurs in PAHO vaccine procurement.

Conscious consumption blogs are at the center of a particular online community where eco-friendly products are popularized. Through the lens of these blogs, this paper analyzes discourse around identity, purchasing, sustainability, lifestyle, community, and activism, to investigate the forces at work in the conscious consumption movement and identify where there is a need for a shift towards a more political environmentalism. As an environmentalist strategy, conscious consumption disproportionately centers the consumer angle, constructing personal possessions as symbols of sustainability. Language analysis reveals strong individualistic messages about personal belief, preference, and benefit which overwhelm any sense of communal good. Instead, motivation …
