This research develops a general methodology for designing neural network classifiers for real-world environmental problems. This methodology is demonstrated through the design of a multi-layer perceptron to classify stainless steel and actinide samples. Neural networks, sometimes called artificial neural networks, have been shown capable of classifying complex patterns. Artificial neural networks are physiologically motivated computer algorithms which attempt to mimic the function of the large interconnected network of neurons in the human brain, which has extraordinary pattern recognition capabilities. Solid Rocket Motors (SRMs) power the initial flight of the Space Shuttle and Titan IV rocket. During those first two minutes after liftoff, the exhaust plumes from these motors emit large quantities of chlorine compounds and alumina particles into the atmosphere. For years scientists have argued that such a large chlorine input, injected directly into the stratosphere, would photochemically react with the surrounding air to cause significant ozone depletion. To answer the question of whether SRM exhaust causes a significant ozone depletion, Version 7 data from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) instrument was analyzed for the 30 days prior …

As the Air Force has progressed and succeeded in the realm of pollution prevention, the opportunities for further progress have become more challenging. With the 'low-hanging fruit' now gone from the pollution prevention tree, new methods to identify opportunities must be adopted. This research effort applied a subset of activity based costing, activity driver analysis, to reveal pollution prevention opportunities in regards to hazardous materials usage. A sample of base organizations (civil engineering and aircraft maintenance), and a sample of the hazardous chemicals (Class C or most hazardous) used by those organizations were investigated to determine the drivers behind usage.

This research effort used an automated respirometer to evaluate the enhancement of JP-8 fuel biodegradation, from surfactant addition. Two nonionic surfactants, Novell 1412-7 and Alfonic 810-4.5 were chosen for addition to contaminated JP-8, microcosms at three levels of treatment. The three levels of treatment included sub-CMC, CMC, and supra-CMC concentrations for each surfactant. The Novell II, nonionic surfactant, exhibited inhibitory characteristics, and was eliminated from the study. The focus of the study was to determine if JP-8 was actually degraded, and if enhancement of JP-8 biodegradation would be achieved from surfactant addition. This research expanded Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) communications analysis in two areas. First, multimode communication was included to account for ground to ground and air to ground links in addition to the standard air to air links traditionally used in LPI analysis. The propagation equations for the three modes of interest were derived and included in LPI analytic models in the form of a mode quality factor to account for multimode LPI scenarios. Cluster analysis is widely used in many applications, ranging from image and speech coding to pattern recognition. A new method that uses the weighted Mahalanobis distance (WMD) via the covariance matrix of the individual clusters as the basis for grouping is presented in this thesis. In this algorithm, the Mahalanobis distance is used as a measure of similarity between the samples in each cluster. This thesis discusses some difficulties associated with using the Mahalanobis distance in clustering. The proposed method provides solutions to these problems. Si/Si1-xGex MQW Infrared Photodetectors offer the promise of normal incidence photodetection tunable over the range of 3-12 micrometers wavelength range at temperatures above 40 K. This system is attractive because the Si1-xGex offers greater compatibility with existing Si based signal processing circuitry. Band structures, momentum matrix elements and linear absorption coefficients are computed using a Luftinger-Kohn k/p analysis for Si/Si1-xGex quantum wells grown in the 110 direction. As humans, we develop the ability to identify people by their voice at an early age. Getting computers to perform the same task has proven to be an interesting problem. Speaker recognition involves two applications, speaker identification and speaker verification. Both applications are examined in this effort. Two methods are employed to perform speaker recognition. The first is an enhancement of hidden Markov models. Rather than alter some part of the model itself, a single-layer perceptron is added to perform neural post-processing. Atmospheric turbulence parameters, such as Fried's coherence diameter, the outer scale of turbulence, and the turbulence power law, are related to the wavefront slope structure function (SSF). The SSF is defined as the second moment of the wavefront slope difference as a function of both time and position. Knowledge of the SSF allows turbulence parameters to be estimated. Hartmann wavefront sensor (H-WFS) slope measurements composed of both signal and noise, allow the SSF to be estimated by computing a mean square difference of H-WFS slope measurements. Formal, mathematically-based techniques promise to play an expanding role in the development and maintenance of the software on which our technological society depends. Algebraic techniques have been applied successfully to algorithm synthesis by the use of algorithm theories and design tactics, an approach pioneered in the Kestrel Interactive Development System (KIDS). An algorithm theory formally characterizes the essential components of a family of algorithms. A design tactic is a specialized procedure for recognizing in a problem specification the structures identified in an algorithm theory and then synthesizing a program. This research develops an automated method for segmenting Magnetic Resonance (MR) brain images based on Pulse Coupled Neural Networks (PCNN). MR brain image segmentation has proven difficult, primarily due to scanning artifacts such as interscan and intrascan intensity inhomogeneities. The method developed and presented here uses a PCNN to both filter and segment MR brain images. The technique begins by preprocessing images with a PCNN filter to reduce scanning artifacts. Images are then contrast enhanced via histogram equalization. Finally, a PCNN is used to segment the images to arrive at the final result. Modifications to the original PCNN model are …

Ba, BaO, Sr and SrO were ablated by 248 nm laser pulses at fluences ranging from 270 mJ-/sq cm to 575 mJ-/sq cm in vacuum and in 25 mtorr atmospheres of N2, O2 and microwave-discharged O2. The spectral emissions of these plumes were compared for indications of ionization due to Ba or Sr collisions with each gas. The addition of a background gas increased the ion and neutral signature across the spectrum. SrO band emission was observed at 16,600-16,900/cm and possible BaO band emissions were observed in the 18,250-18,400/cm, 19,000-19700/cm and 19,800-20,000/cm regions. The United States Air Force uses aircraft flight simulators for pilot training and mission rehearsal. They use a variety of simulators for this task ranging with prices ranging from $400,000 to $30,000,000. These simulators have specialized hardware that restricts reuse of their components and increases maintenance costs. Air Education and Training Command wants to reduce simulators cost and improve availability to the operational commands by supporting research in virtual reality flight simulators. Knowing that reasoning over probabilistic networks is, in general, NP-hard, and that most reasoning environments have limited resources, we need to select algorithms that can solve a given problem as fast as possible. This thesis presents a method for predicting the relative performance of reasoning algorithms based on the domain characteristics of the target knowledge structure. Armed with this knowledge, the research shows how to choose the best algorithm to solve the problem. This thesis represents a continuation of the assessment of the Unified Telerobotics Architecture Project (UTAP), a proposed Air Force standard. This architecture was developed by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the National Institute of Standards under contract to the Air Force Materiel Command Robotics and Automation Center of Excellence at Kelly AFB, Texas. This work develops tools and techniques to identify particular Bayesian Knowledge Base (BKB) incompletenesses, and to modify the existing knowledge-base (KB) structure to correct these problems. The methodology performs manually or automatically, informing the user of either problems causing the incompleteness, or of details resulting from the automatic knowledge-base correction. The proposed methodology is designed for integration with BVAL, to augment BVAL's validation techniques.

The Solar System Modeler (SM) extends the Space Modeler developed in 1994. It provides a virtual environment enabling an explorer to dynamically investigate near Earth satellites, deep space probes, planets, moons, and other celestial phenomena. The explorer navigates the virtual environment via mouse selected options from menu panels while wearing a tracked, head mounted display (HMD). Alternatively, a monitor may replace the HMD and keyboard controls replace head tracking. Accurate and reliable prediction of macromolecular structures has eluded researchers for nearly 40 years. Prediction via energy minimization assumes the native conformation has the globally minimal energy potential. An exhaustive search is impossible since for molecules of normal size, the size of the search space exceeds the size of the universe. Domain knowledge sources, such as the Brookhaven PDB can be mined for constraints to limit the search space. Rocket launches at Vandenburg Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Station produce exhaust clouds containing several toxic by-products, including HC1 and A12O3. These clouds rise to atmospheric stabilization heights, and then start dispersing and diffusing through the air. Upon reaching the ground, concentration levels of the toxins may present a human health risk. To predict these risks and concentration levels, range officials use a computer program titled the Rocket Effluent Exhaust Diffusion Model (REEDM). This study discusses an architecture used for displaying data results in a graphical format. This data is obtained via internet connection or from a direct connection to a battlefield simulator known as BattleSim. This architecture utilizes several graphics packages for displaying the output along with two different approaches to receiving commands from the user. This thesis develops a methodology to incrementally convert a legacy object oriented C++ application into Ada95. Using the experience of converting a graphic application, called Remote Debriefing Tool (RDT), in the Graphics Lab of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), this effort defined a process to convert a C++ application into Ada95. The methodology consists of five phases: (1) reorganizing the software application, (2) breaking mutual dependencies, (3) creating package specifications to interface the existing C++ classes, (4) converting C++ code into Ada programs, and (5) embellishing. Problems can arise whenever inferencing is attempted on a knowledge base that is incomplete. Our work shows that data mining techniques can be applied to fill in incomplete areas in Bayesian Knowledge Bases (BKBs), as well as in other knowledge-based systems utilizing probabilistic representations. The problem of inconsistency in BKBs has been addressed in previous work, where reinforcement learning techniques from neural networks were applied. However, the issue of automatically solving incompleteness in BKBs has yet to be addressed.
