Mobilization Of Trace Elements In Aquifers By Biodegradation Of Hydrocarbon Contaminants, Scott L. Kearney Dec 1997

Mobilization Of Trace Elements In Aquifers By Biodegradation Of Hydrocarbon Contaminants, Scott L. Kearney

Theses and Dissertations

This study had two objectives: (1) to determine the extent of metal mobility within petroleum-contaminated aquifers, (2) to determine if biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons can explain metal mobility. The approach reviewed analytical results from 2305 groundwater sampling events, taken from 958 wells, located at 136 sites found at 53 Air Force installations. The study showed that high levels of metals are present at petroleum hydrocarbon sites where metals would not generally be expected. Of the metals with drinking water maximum contaminant levels (MCLs), mercury and silver were detected the least frequently. Barium and copper were detected at the sites, but …

Spontaneous Emission In Microcavity Lasers, Dustin Philip Ziegler Dec 1997

Spontaneous Emission In Microcavity Lasers, Dustin Philip Ziegler

Theses and Dissertations

An understanding of spontaneous emission processes within microcavities is crucial in addressing the need to make tomorrow's microlasers more efficient. One approach to improving the device efficiency is to reduce the threshold input energy at which lasing begins to occur. It has been suggested that the threshold in a microcavity laser can be decreased by increasing the fraction of spontaneous emission into the lasing mode, this can be accomplished by preferentially coupling the gain medium of the laser to the electromagnetic cavity mode of interest. It therefore becomes necessary to understand the mechanism by which this coupling takes place. This …

Applications Of Unsupervised Clustering Algorithms To Aircraft Identification Using High Range Resolution Radar, Dzung Tri Pham Dec 1997

Applications Of Unsupervised Clustering Algorithms To Aircraft Identification Using High Range Resolution Radar, Dzung Tri Pham

Theses and Dissertations

Identification of aircraft from high range resolution (HRR) radar range profiles requires a database of information capturing the variability of the individual range profiles as a function of viewing aspect. This database can be a collection of individual signatures or a collection of average signatures distributed over the region of viewing aspect of interest. An efficient database is one which captures the intrinsic variability of the HRR signatures without either excessive redundancy typical of single-signature databases, or without the loss of information common when averaging arbitrary groups of signatures. The identification of 'natural' clustering of similar HRR signatures provides a …

A Modeling Study For The Implementation Of In Situ Cometabolic Bioremediation Of Trichloroethylene-Contaminated Groundwater, John A. Christ Dec 1997

A Modeling Study For The Implementation Of In Situ Cometabolic Bioremediation Of Trichloroethylene-Contaminated Groundwater, John A. Christ

Theses and Dissertations

The limitations of conventional groundwater remediation technologies have led to the development of innovative technologies which may achieve national hazardous waste site remediation goals. Before an innovative technology can be implemented in the field, remedial project managers, regulators and other stakeholders require adequate modeling tools to help assess the applicability of the technology at a particular site. This modeling study investigates how an innovative technology, in situ cometabolic bioremediation, might be implemented to remediate a TCE-contaminated site, under different site conditions. A steady-state model is developed which couples an analytical expression to simulate the effect of flow between multiple pumping …

A Single Chip Low Power Implementation Of An Asynchronous Fft Algorithm For Space Applications, Bruce W. Hunt Dec 1997

A Single Chip Low Power Implementation Of An Asynchronous Fft Algorithm For Space Applications, Bruce W. Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

A fully asynchronous fixed point FFT processor is introduced for low power space applications. The architecture is based on an algorithm developed by Suter and Stevens specifically for a low power implementation. The novelty of this architecture lies in its high localization of components and pipelining with no need to share a global memory. High throughput is attained using large numbers of small, local components working in parallel. A derivation of the algorithm from the discrete Fourier transform is presented followed by a discussion of circuit design parameters specifically, those relevant to space applications. The generic architecture is explained with …

Time Resolved Photoluminescence Spectra Of A Mid-Infrared Multiple Quantum Well Semiconductor Laser, Anthony L. Franz Dec 1997

Time Resolved Photoluminescence Spectra Of A Mid-Infrared Multiple Quantum Well Semiconductor Laser, Anthony L. Franz

Theses and Dissertations

Recombination mechanisms in mid-IR semiconductor lasers are strongly dependent on the carrier density of the active region. The objective of this research is to improve previous carrier density estimates through the incorporation of spectral information. One hundred photoluminescence (PL) spectra were calculated for a variety of carrier densities. Calculations were made for an InAsSb/InAlAsSb multiple quantum well laser sample assuming parabolic bands. The widths of the calculated spectral profiles were tabulated as a function of carrier density. Actual spectra were measured using the Ultrafast Mid-Infrared Photoluminescence System, which uses upconversion to measure the PL intensity in time steps smaller than …

Displacement Of The Earth's Bow Shock And Magnetopause Due To An Impinging Interplanetary Shock Wave, William A. Olson Dec 1997

Displacement Of The Earth's Bow Shock And Magnetopause Due To An Impinging Interplanetary Shock Wave, William A. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

Interplanetary shock waves (ISWs) propagating through the solar wind can collide with the earth's bow shock, resulting in a series of new shocks, contact discontinuities, and rarefaction waves which interact to effectively move the bow shock and magnetopause toward the earth. A one dimensional MacCormack predictor corrector algorithm with Flux Corrected Transport (FCT) was developed to model the ISW bow shock and magnetopause interactions, and to numerically predict their propagation speeds after collision. Analytic relationships for the Mach numbers and propagation speeds of the generated shock waves and contact discontinuities were used to validate the model and to compare numerical …

An Analytical Method To Calculate Activity From Measurements Affected By Coincidence Summing, Anthony P. Popovich Dec 1997

An Analytical Method To Calculate Activity From Measurements Affected By Coincidence Summing, Anthony P. Popovich

Theses and Dissertations

An analytical method is developed and applied to find the activities of two radioisotopes based on measurements influenced by true coincidence summing. The method incorporates the solid angle subtended by the detector, the macroscopic cross sections of the materials present, the absolute peak and total efficiencies of the detector, and the modes and probabilities of decay of the radioisotope. With this information, the method corrects for both summing-in and summing-out events. Summing events affect peak counts and cause the calculated activity to differ from the true activity. Thin disk sources of Mo-99 and Cs-136 on the face of a closed-end, …

Microprogramming A Writeable Control Memory Using Very Long Instruction Word (Vliw) Compilation Techniques, Randall S. Whitman Dec 1997

Microprogramming A Writeable Control Memory Using Very Long Instruction Word (Vliw) Compilation Techniques, Randall S. Whitman

Theses and Dissertations

Microprogrammed Digital Signal Processors (DSP) are frequently used as a solution to embedded processor applications. These processors utilize a control memory which permits execution of the processor's instruction set architecture (ISA). The control memory can take the form of a static, read only memory (ROM) or a dynamic, writeable control memory (WCM), or both. Microcoding the WCM permits redefining the processor's ISA and provides speedup due to its instruction level parallelism (ILP) potential. In the past, code generation efforts for microprogrammable processors focused on creating assembly and microcode as two separate steps. In this thesis an alternative approach was chosen …

Modeling The Uptake And Transpiration Of Tce Using Phreatophytic Trees, Douglas P. Wise Dec 1997

Modeling The Uptake And Transpiration Of Tce Using Phreatophytic Trees, Douglas P. Wise

Theses and Dissertations

Phytoremediation is a recent addition to the numerous methods used today to remediate ground water contaminants. It is proving more effective and efficient compared to existing remediation techniques. The use of phreatophytes, or water seeking trees, has great potential for phytoremediation. These trees are fast growing, long lived, grow their roots down to the ground water table, transpire large amounts of water, and are proven to actively remove contaminants from the soil horizon. The purpose of this research is to develop quantitative concepts for understanding the dynamics of TCE uptake and transpiration by phreatophytic trees over a short rotation woody …

A System Dynamics Model Of The Bioavailability Of Metals In Constructed Wetland Sediment, Timothy S. Wood Dec 1997

A System Dynamics Model Of The Bioavailability Of Metals In Constructed Wetland Sediment, Timothy S. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Constructed wetlands used for storm water treatment accumulate metals primarily in their sediment. This sediment has the potential to produce toxic effects in benthic organisms at some period in time. Bioavailability of metals in sediment is directly linked to pore water metal activity. The mechanisms that influence pore water metal activity are included in physical, chemical, and biological processes. A system dynamics model was developed to represent these processes and the major influences affecting pore water metal activity in a treatment wetland receiving storm water influent. The model structure and behavior was tested and validated using several system dynamics validation …

Collisional Broadening Of Spectral Lines In The X → B System Of O2 And The First Vibrational Band Of No By The Noble Gases, John J. Cornicelli

Theses and Dissertations

Collisional broadening of the rotational spectral lines of the X to b system of O2 and the first vibrational band of NO by the noble gases is examined by Fourier transform spectroscopy. Peaks of the individual rotational lines are modeled with a Voigt function, from which Lorentzian half widths are extracted. Lorentzian widths are plotted vs. pressure of foreign gas, from which the pressure broadening coefficients and pressure broadening cross sections are calculated. The pressure broadening coefficients are compared to theoretical values determined by past research for O2. NO coefficients are compared to similar research using N …

A Validation Of The Parameterized Real-Time Ionospheric Specification Model (Prism) Version 1.7b, Shawn D. Filby

Theses and Dissertations

The most current version of the Parameterized Real-time Ionospheric Specification Model (PRISM), version 1.7b, was validated using Digital Ionospheric Sounding System (DISS) measurements of F2 layer critical frequency (foF2) and F2 peak electron density height (hmF2) as the "ground truth." PRISM was executed, first, with no real-time input parameter and, second, with Global Positioning System (GPS) Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements as the sole real-time parameter. Hourly values of hmF2 and foF2 over 123 days in 1994-1996 (solar minimum conditions) and covering three seasons (equinox, summer solstice, and winter solstice) were compared for Wallops Island, Virginia, and Point Arguello, California, …

Hybrid Quantum And Molecular Mechanics Embedded Cluster Models For Chemistry On Silicon And Silicon Carbide Surfaces, James R. Shoemaker Oct 1997

Hybrid Quantum And Molecular Mechanics Embedded Cluster Models For Chemistry On Silicon And Silicon Carbide Surfaces, James R. Shoemaker

Theses and Dissertations

Fabrication of silicon carbide SiC semiconductor devices are of interest for aerospace applications because of their high-temperature tolerance. Growth of an insulating SiO2 layer on SiC is a poorly understood process, and sometimes produces interface defects that degrade device performance. Accurate theoretical models of surface chemistry, using quantum mechanics QM, do not exist because of the huge computational cost of solving Schroedingers equation for a molecular cluster large enough to represent a surface. Molecular mechanics MM, which describes a molecule as a collection of atoms interacting through classical potentials, is a fast computational method, good at predicting molecular structure, …

Shock Waves In Nonequilibrium Gases And Plasmas, William M. Hilbun Oct 1997

Shock Waves In Nonequilibrium Gases And Plasmas, William M. Hilbun

Theses and Dissertations

An analysis and assessment of three mechanisms describing plasma/shock wave interactions was conducted under conditions typically encountered in a weakly ionized glow discharge. The mechanisms of ion-acoustic wave damping, post-shock energy addition and thermal inhomogeneities were examined by numerically solving the Euler equations with appropriate source terms adapted for each mechanism. Ion-acoustic wave damping was examined by modeling the partially ionized plasma as two fluids in one spatial dimension using the Riemann problem as a basis. Post-shock energy addition in the form of nonequilibrium vibrational energy relaxation was also examined in one spatial dimension using the Riemann problem as a …

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak Sep 1997

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops theoretical methods for parameter estimation of filtered, pulsed sinusoids in noise and demonstrates their effectiveness for Electronic Warfare EW applications. Within the context of stochastic modeling, a new linear model, parameterized by a set of Linear Prediction LP coefficients, is derived for estimating the frequencies of filtered sinusoids. This model is an improvement over previous modeling techniques since the effects of the filter and the coefficients upon the noise statistics are properly accounted for during model development. From this linear model, a relationship between LP coefficient estimation and Maximum Likelihood ML frequency estimation is derived and several …

Extracting Functionally Equivalent Object-Oriented Designs From Legacy Imperative Code, Ricky E. Sward Sep 1997

Extracting Functionally Equivalent Object-Oriented Designs From Legacy Imperative Code, Ricky E. Sward

Theses and Dissertations

This research defines a methodology for automatically extracting functionally equivalent object-oriented designs from legacy imperative programs. The Parameter-Based Object Identification (PBOI) methodology is based on fundamental ideas that relate programs written in imperative languages such as C or COBOL to objects and classes written in object-oriented languages such as Ada 95 or C ++. Transformations have been developed that formalize the PBOI methodology and a formal proof is provided showing the extracted object-oriented design is functionally equivalent to the legacy imperative system. To focus the task of re-engineering, generic models of imperative programming languages and object-oriented programming languages have been …

Experimental Investigation Of Nonlinear Dynamics In Single Mode Semiconductor Laser Diodes With Phase Conjugate Feedback, Gordon T. Hengst Aug 1997

Experimental Investigation Of Nonlinear Dynamics In Single Mode Semiconductor Laser Diodes With Phase Conjugate Feedback, Gordon T. Hengst

Theses and Dissertations

The semiconductor laser diode offers a unique system to investigate nonlinear dynamics when optical feedback is applied. Although there is extensive research of laser diodes with optical feedback from normal dielectric mirrors, very little has been done experimentally to analyze the effects of degenerate phase conjugate feedback from a BaTiO3 crystal. This research experimentally investigated the dynamics of a single-mode laser diode with weak phase conjugate feedback using both the self-pumped and double phase conjugate geometries. The experimental results validated a mathematical model which numerically evaluates the Lang-Kobayahsi coupled differential equations. The model simulated the nonlinear behavior of a …

Kinetics And Spectroscopy Of Brno, Patrick E. Godfrey Jun 1997

Kinetics And Spectroscopy Of Brno, Patrick E. Godfrey

Theses and Dissertations

The infrared spectra and photochemistry of nitrosyl bromide, BrNO, are important to characterizing the performance of a recently demonstrated Br(2P1/2)-NO(v=2 → v=1) transfer laser pumped by photolysis of iodine molecules. This wavelength agile, mid-infrared laser may be a desirable source for remote sensing and infrared countermeasures missions. Nitrosyl bromide also plays a role in the destruction of stratospheric ozone. The kinetics of BrNO formation and destruction were examined using time-resolved photolysis techniques. The equilibrium constant for the dark reaction Br2 + 2NO (reversible reaction) 2BrNO was determined as Keq 168 ± 23 /atm and …

Physiologically-Based Vision Modeling Applications And Gradient Descent-Based Parameter Adaptation Of Pulse Coupled Neural Networks, Randy P. Broussard Jun 1997

Physiologically-Based Vision Modeling Applications And Gradient Descent-Based Parameter Adaptation Of Pulse Coupled Neural Networks, Randy P. Broussard

In this research, pulse coupled neural networks (PCNNs) are analyzed and evaluated for use in primate vision modeling. An adaptive PCNN is developed that automatically sets near-optimal parameter values to achieve a desired output. For vision modeling, a physiologically motivated vision model is developed from current theoretical and experimental biological data. The biological vision processing principles used in this model, such as spatial frequency filtering, competitive feature selection, multiple processing paths, and state dependent modulation are analyzed and implemented to create a PCNN based feature extraction network. This network extracts luminance, orientation, pitch, wavelength, and motion, and can be cascaded …

Optimization Considerations For Adaptive Optics Digital Imagery Systems, Robert T. Brigantic Jun 1997

Optimization Considerations For Adaptive Optics Digital Imagery Systems, Robert T. Brigantic

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation had three objectives. The first objective was to develop image quality metrics that characterize Adaptive Optics System (AOS) performance. The second objective was to delineate control settings that maximize AOS performance. The third objective was to identify and characterize trade-offs between fully and partially compensated adaptive. For the first objective, three candidate image quality metrics were considered: the Strehl ratio, a novel metric that modifies the Strehl ratio by integrating the modulus of the average system optical transfer function to a 'noise-effective-cutoff' frequency at which some specified image spectrum signal-to-noise-ratio level is attained, and the noise-effective-cutoff frequency. It …

Autonomous Construction Of Multi Layer Perceptron Neural Networks, Thomas F. Rathbun Jun 1997

Autonomous Construction Of Multi Layer Perceptron Neural Networks, Thomas F. Rathbun

Theses and Dissertations

The construction of Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks for classification is explored. A novel algorithm is developed, the MLP Iterative Construction Algorithm (MICA), that designs the network architecture as it trains the weights of the hidden layer nodes. The architecture can be optimized on training set classification accuracy, whereby it always achieves 100% classification accuracies, or it can be optimized for generalization. The test results for MICA compare favorably with those of backpropagation on some data sets and far surpasses backpropagation on others while requiring less FLOPS to train. Feature selection is enhanced by MICA because it affords the …

Evaluation And Application Of Space Telescope Aberration Sensing Using Phase Diversity, David J. Lee Apr 1997

Evaluation And Application Of Space Telescope Aberration Sensing Using Phase Diversity, David J. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Due to mechanical aspects of fabrication, launch, and operational environment, space telescope optics can suffer from unforeseen aberrations, detracting from their intended diffraction-limited performance goals. This dissertation gives the results of simulation and theoretical studies designed to explore how wavefront aberration information for such "nearly diffraction-limited" telescopes can be estimated via the Gonsalves (least-squares) phase diversity technique. In traditional phase diversity, aberrations are estimated from two images—one conventional, focused image and one image that has been defocused by a known amount. These studies are original and significant in that this effort represents the first time the effects of photon noise …
