A Dempster-Shafer Method For Multi-Sensor Fusion, Bethany G. Foley Mar 2012

A Dempster-Shafer Method For Multi-Sensor Fusion, Bethany G. Foley

Theses and Dissertations

The Dempster-Shafer Theory, a generalization of the Bayesian theory, is based on the idea of belief and as such can handle ignorance. When all of the required information is available, many data fusion methods provide a solid approach. Yet, most do not have a good way of dealing with ignorance. In the absence of information, these methods must then make assumptions about the sensor data. However, the real data may not fit well within the assumed model. Consequently, the results are often unsatisfactory and inconsistent. The Dempster-Shafer Theory is not hindered by incomplete models or by the lack of prior …

A Women-Only Comparision Of The U.S. Air Force Fitness Test And The Marine Combat Fitness Test, Tarah D. Mitchell Mar 2012

A Women-Only Comparision Of The U.S. Air Force Fitness Test And The Marine Combat Fitness Test, Tarah D. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

In 2009, Captain Thomas Worden determined the Air Force Physical Fitness Test (AFPFT) poorly predicted combat capability for his 86 study participants. With only 5 of these 86 volunteers being women, this limited Worden's findings to primarily men. This follow-on research investigated whether these results carried over to women. We recruited 61 female volunteers and compared their performance on the AFPFT to the Marine Combat Fitness Test, the proxy for combat capability. Like Worden's research, we discovered little association between the two (R2 of 0.161). However, this association significantly increased (adj R2 of 0.572) when utilizing the raw …

Determining Angular Frequency From A Video With A Generalized Fast Fourier Transform, Lindsay N. Smith Mar 2012

Determining Angular Frequency From A Video With A Generalized Fast Fourier Transform, Lindsay N. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Suppose we are given a video of a rotating object and suppose we want to determine the rate of rotation solely from the video itself and its known frame rate. In this thesis, we present a new mathematical operator called the Geometric Sum Transform (GST) that can help one determine the angular frequency of the object in question. The GST is a generalization of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and as such, the two transforms have much in common. However, whereas the DFT is applied to a sequence of scalars, the GST can be applied to a sequence of vectors. …

Fdtd Simulation Of Novel Polarimetric And Directional Refelectance And Transmittance Measurements From Optical Nano- And Micro-Structured Materials, Spencer R. Sellers Mar 2012

Fdtd Simulation Of Novel Polarimetric And Directional Refelectance And Transmittance Measurements From Optical Nano- And Micro-Structured Materials, Spencer R. Sellers

Theses and Dissertations

The basic physics of nano-/micro-structured materials must be categorized through measurements and simulation to fully understand their scatter dependence on polarization and angle on incidence before they can be considered for war fighter applications. The off-normal incidence and polarization dependant scatter for a guided-mode resonance filter (GMRF) and a surface plasmonic polariton (SPP) extraordinary transmission filter is measured. The measurements are compared to finite-difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. The GMRF is found to exhibit extraordinary angular scatter at the resonant coupled modes. An approximation is developed to predict the dependence of these modes on wavelength, incident angle and polarization. For …

Turbulence Measurement In The Atmospheric Boundary Layer Using Cellular Telephone Signals, Lee R. Burchett Mar 2012

Turbulence Measurement In The Atmospheric Boundary Layer Using Cellular Telephone Signals, Lee R. Burchett

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigated a new method for measuring the intensity of turbulence in the planetary boundary layer that shows a high correlation with measurements from weather radar. The method takes measurements of cell phone signal strength and uses scintillation in the signal to estimate the strength of local turbulence. Using cell phone signals provides unique measurement advantages: it is a passive measurement method, it is not strongly affected by precipitation, and one device can potentially measure several paths at once. The measurements were taken using an Android® cell phone running a custom built application. The strength of turbulence was quantified …

Using Multiattribute Utility Copulas In Support Of Uav Search And Destroy Operations, Beau A. Nunnally Mar 2012

Using Multiattribute Utility Copulas In Support Of Uav Search And Destroy Operations, Beau A. Nunnally

Theses and Dissertations

The multiattribute utility copula is an emerging form of utility function used by decision analysts to study decisions with dependent attributes. Failure to properly address attribute dependence may cause errors in selecting the optimal policy. This research examines two scenarios of interest to the modern warfighter. The first scenario employs a utility copula to determine the type, quantity, and altitude of UAVs to be sent to strike a stationary target. The second scenario employs a utility copula to examine the impact of attribute dependence on the optimal routing of UAVs in a contested operational environment when performing a search and …

Empirical Analysis Of Optical Attenuator Performance In Quantum Key Distribution Systems Using A Particle Model, Thomas C. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum key distribution networks currently represent an active area of development and software modeling to address the security of future communications. One of the components used in quantum key distribution implementations is an optical attenuator. Its role in the system is necessary to reach the single photon per bit necessary to maintain theoretically perfect secrecy. How the photon pulse is modeled has a significant impact on the accuracy and performance of quantum channel components like the optical attenuator. Classical physics describe light using Maxwell's wave equations for electromagnetism. Quantum physics has demonstrated light also behaves as discrete particles referred to …

Context Aware Routing Management Architecture For Airborne Networks, Joan A. Betances Mar 2012

Context Aware Routing Management Architecture For Airborne Networks, Joan A. Betances

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis advocates the use of Kalman filters in conjunction with network topology information derived from the Air Tasking Order (ATO) during the planning phase for military missions. This approach is the basis for an algorithm that implements network controls that optimize network performance for Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET). The trajectories of relevant nodes (airborne platforms) participating in the MANET can be forecasted by parsing key information contained in the ATO. This information is used to develop optimum network routes that can significantly improve MANET performance. Improved MANET performance in the battlefield enables decision makers to access information from …

Detector Design Considerations In High-Dimensional Artificial Immune Systems, Jason M. Bindewald Mar 2012

Detector Design Considerations In High-Dimensional Artificial Immune Systems, Jason M. Bindewald

Theses and Dissertations

This research lays the groundwork for a network intrusion detection system that can operate with only knowledge of normal network traffic, using a process known as anomaly detection. Real-valued negative selection (RNS) is a specific anomaly detection algorithm that can be used to perform two-class classification when only one class is available for training. Researchers have shown fundamental problems with the most common detector shape, hyperspheres, in high-dimensional space. The research contained herein shows that the second most common detector type, hypercubes, can also cause problems due to biasing certain features in high dimensions. To address these problems, a new …

Understanding How Reverse Engineers Make Sense Of Programs From Assembly Language Representations, Adam R. Bryant Mar 2012

Understanding How Reverse Engineers Make Sense Of Programs From Assembly Language Representations, Adam R. Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops a theory of the conceptual and procedural aspects involved with how reverse engineers make sense of executable programs. Software reverse engineering is a complex set of tasks which require a person to understand the structure and functionality of a program from its assembly language representation, typically without having access to the program's source code. This dissertation describes the reverse engineering process as a type of sensemaking, in which a person combines reasoning and information foraging behaviors to develop a mental model of the program. The structure of knowledge elements used in making sense of executable programs are …

Towards Quantifying Programmable Logic Controller Resilience Against Intentional Exploits, Henry W. Bushey Mar 2012

Towards Quantifying Programmable Logic Controller Resilience Against Intentional Exploits, Henry W. Bushey

Theses and Dissertations

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems control and monitor services for the nation's critical infrastructure. Recent cyber induced events (e.g., Stuxnet) provide an example of a targeted, covert cyber attack against a SCADA system that resulted in physical effects. Of particular note is how Stuxnet exploited the trust relationship between the human machine interface (HMI) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Current methods for validating system operating parameters rely on message exchange and network communications protocols, generally observed at the HMI. Although sufficient at the macro level, this method does not provide detection of malware that exhibits physical effects via …

Incorporating Externalities And Uncertainty Into Life-Cycle Cost Analysis, Alec C. Danaher Mar 2012

Incorporating Externalities And Uncertainty Into Life-Cycle Cost Analysis, Alec C. Danaher

Theses and Dissertations

Executive Order 13514 requires federal agencies to consider economic and social benefits and costs when evaluating projects and activities based on life-cycle return on investment. The generation of energy used by federal facilities imposes social externalities, most notably air pollution, upon society. This research utilized the social costs of carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and sulfur dioxide to develop a probabilistic life-cycle full-cost analysis tool for the analysis of energy efficiency projects. The tool was then used to investigate the effects of incorporating social externalities and uncertainty into life-cycle cost analyses of energy efficiency projects. Calculation of the social benefits …

Prototyping The Use Of Dispersion Models To Predict Ground Concentrations During Burning Of Deployed Military Waste, Val Oppenheimer

Theses and Dissertations

United States military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have often used open burning of solid waste as a means to achieve volume reduction and to minimize vector borne illnesses. Assessing exposures to burn pit emissions has proven challenging, requiring significant numbers of personnel and sampling equipment. This study examined the use of three common dispersion models to determine the feasibility of using software modeling to predict short-range exposures to burn pit emissions, in lieu of sole reliance on ground sampling. Four open burn tests of municipal solid waste were conducted at Tooele Army Depot, Utah. Aerial samples were collected above …

Obfuscating Against Side-Channel Power Analysis Using Hiding Techniques For Aes, Austin W. Fritzke Mar 2012

Obfuscating Against Side-Channel Power Analysis Using Hiding Techniques For Aes, Austin W. Fritzke

Theses and Dissertations

The transfer of information has always been an integral part of military and civilian operations, and remains so today. Because not all information we share is public, it is important to secure our data from unwanted parties. Message encryption serves to prevent all but the sender and recipient from viewing any encrypted information as long as the key stays hidden. The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is the current industry and military standard for symmetric-key encryption. While AES remains computationally infeasible to break the encrypted message stream, it is susceptible to side-channel attacks if an adversary has access to the appropriate …

Mfire-2: A Multi Agent System For Flow-Based Intrusion Detection Using Stochastic Search, Timothy J. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Detecting attacks targeted against military and commercial computer networks is a crucial element in the domain of cyberwarfare. The traditional method of signature-based intrusion detection is a primary mechanism to alert administrators to malicious activity. However, signature-based methods are not capable of detecting new or novel attacks. This research continues the development of a novel simulated, multiagent, flow-based intrusion detection system called MFIRE. Agents in the network are trained to recognize common attacks, and they share data with other agents to improve the overall effectiveness of the system. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) is the primary classifier with which agents …

Local Histograms For Per-Pixel Classification, Melody L. Massar Mar 2012

Local Histograms For Per-Pixel Classification, Melody L. Massar

Theses and Dissertations

We introduce a rigorous mathematical theory for the analysis of local histograms, and study how they interact with textures that can be modeled as occlusions of simpler components. We first show how local histograms can be computed as a system of convolutions and discuss some basic local histogram properties. We then introduce a probabilistic, occlusion-based model for textures and formally demonstrate that local histogram transforms are natural tools for analyzing the textures produced by our model. Next, we characterize all nonlinear transforms which satisfy the three key properties of local histograms and consider the appropriateness of local histogram features in …

Acquiring Os X File Handles Through Forensic Memory Analysis, Andrew F. Hay, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Memory analysis has become a critical capability in digital forensics because it provides insight into system state that cannot be fully represented through traditional media analysis. The volafox open source project has begun the work of structured memory analysis for OS X with support for a limited set of kernel structures. This paper addresses one memory analysis deficiency on OS X with the introduction of a new volafox module for parsing file handles associated with running processes. The developed module outputs information comparable to the UNIX lsof (list open files) command, which is used to validate the results.

Internal Electric Fields Due To Piezoelectric And Spontaneous Polarizations In Cdzno/Mgzno Quantum Well, H. C. Jeon, S. J. Lee, Tae Won Kang, S. H. Park, Yung Kee Yeo, T. F. George Dec 2011

Internal Electric Fields Due To Piezoelectric And Spontaneous Polarizations In Cdzno/Mgzno Quantum Well, H. C. Jeon, S. J. Lee, Tae Won Kang, S. H. Park, Yung Kee Yeo, T. F. George

Faculty Publications

We have investigated optical properties as a function of internal and external fields in the quantum well (QW). Optical properties of CdZnO/MgZnO QW structures are investigated by using many‐body effects. The CdZnO/MgZnO QW structure with high Cd composition is found to have smaller optical gain because the strain‐induced piezoelectric polarization and the spontaneous polarization in the well increase with the inclusion of Cd. These results demonstrate that high performance laser diode operation can be realized in CdZnO/MgZnO QW structures by reducing those polarizations adopting dipole reverse method.

The magnetization curve as a function of the magnetic field at 5 K showed that the magnetization in the (Ga0.995Mn0.005)N thin film was significantly enhanced due to Mn delta-doping. The magnetization curve as a function of the temperature showed that the Curie temperature of the Mn delta-doped (Ga0.995Mn0.005)N thin film was estimated to be above room temperature. The theoretical results showed that Ga vacancies near the Mn delta-doping layer were likely to cause p-type conductance in the (Ga0.995Mn0.005)N thin film. Abstract © 2011 AIP
