In this work, we have described the mathematical modeling of COVID-19 transmission using fractional differential equations. The mathematical modeling of infectious disease goes back to the 1760s when the famous mathematician Daniel Bernoulli used an elementary version of compartmental modeling to find the effectiveness of deliberate smallpox inoculation on life expectancy. We have used the well-known SIR (Susceptible, Infected and Recovered) model of Kermack & McKendrick to extend the analysis further by including exposure, quarantining, insusceptibility and deaths in a SEIQRDP model. Further, we have generalized this model by using the solutions of Fractional Differential Equations to test the accuracy …

Pulsars are fast spinning neutron stars that lose their rotational energy via various processes such as gravitational and magnetic radiation, particle acceleration and mass loss processes. This dissipation can be quantified by a spin-down equation that measures the rate of change of the frequency as a function of the rotational frequency itself. We explore the pulsar spin-down and consider the spin-down equation upto the seventh order in frequency. This seventh order term accounts for energy loss due to the gravitational radiation caused by a current type quadrupole in the pulsar due to r-modes. We derive the rotational frequency due to …

Raman spectroscopy is a well-established technique for the molecular characterisation of samples and does not require extensive pre-analytical processing for complex cosmetic products. As an illustration of its potential, this study investigates the quantitative performance of Raman spectroscopy coupled with partial least squares regression (PLSR) for the analysis of Alginate nanoencapsulated Piperonyl Esters (ANC-PE) incorporated into a hydrogel. A total of 96 ANC-PE samples covering a 0.4% w/w–8.3% w/w PE concentration range have been prepared and analysed. Despite the complex formulation of the sample, the spectral features of the PE can be detected and used to quantify the concentrations. Using …

Ember Alerts: Assessing Wireless Emergency Alert (Wea) Messages In Wildfires Using The Warning Response Model, Erica D. Kuligowski, Nicholas A. Waugh, Jeannette Sutton, Thomas J. Cova
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
When evacuation is necessary in a wildfire event, affected communities must be alerted and warned of the imminent danger and instructed on what to do to protect themselves. One channel available to message providers in the United States is Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) disseminated via IPAWS. Recent wildfire events have shed light on the need to improve WEA strategies and messages when alerting exposed populations of imminent fire threat. The purpose of this article is to assess how, when and where WEAs have been used in US wildfires; whether they comply with guidance set out by Mileti and Sorensen’s Warning …

Communicating Hazard Location Through Text And Map In Earthquake Early Warnings: A Mixed Methods Study, Jeannette Sutton, Michele M. Wood, Nicholas A. Waugh, Savanah Crouch
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of presenting hazard location in different formats on key warning message outcomes—understanding, personalizing, believing, deciding, and milling. We conducted two studies using experiment and focus group methods. In the experiment, we compared a standard ShakeAlert earthquake early warning message, which merely implied location, to three enhanced messages that communicated information about the earthquake epicenter via text, map, or a combined text-and-map format. Focus groups explored reactions to warning messages accompanied by different types of maps. Overall, the standard ShakeAlert message was associated with worse message outcomes compared to messages that …

Public Perceptions Of U.S. Earthquake Early Warning Post-Alert Messages: Findings From Focus Groups And Interviews, Jeannette Sutton, Michele M. Wood, Savanah Crouch, Nicholas A. Waugh
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
In May 2020, a false earthquake alert message was sent to the city of Ridgecrest, CA, in the U.S.A., an area that just 10 months prior had experienced a significant series of earthquake events. The false alert was followed by a post-alert message, indicating that the message was cancelled and under investigation. This event, the first of its kind in the U.S.A., provided an opportunity to learn about public perceptions of the post-alert message, including what individuals understood about the threat and their safety, and what actions they should take as a result. We conducted individual interviews with 40 persons …

You Have To Send The Right Message: Examining The Influence Of Protective Action Guidance On Message Perception Outcomes Across Prior Hazard Warning Experience To Three Hazards, Laura Fischer, David Huntsman, Ginger Orton, Jeannette Sutton
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
A long-term goal for warning message designers is to determine the most effective type of message that can instruct individuals to act quickly and prevent loss of life and/or injury when faced with an imminent threat. One likely way to increase an individual’s behavioral intent to act when they are faced with risk information is to provide protective action information or guidance. This study investigated participant perceptions (understanding, believing, personalizing, deciding, milling, self-efficacy, and response-efficacy) in response to the National Weather Service’s experimental product Twitter messages for three hazard types (tornado, snow squall, dust storm), with each message varying by …
The Market-Essential Role Of Corporate Climate Disclosure, George S. Georgiev
The Market-Essential Role Of Corporate Climate Disclosure, George S. Georgiev
Faculty Articles
This Article focuses on capital market efficiency as an often-downplayed legal rationale for mandating corporate climate disclosure, and explores it alongside the notion of investor demand, which has assumed a prominent and, increasingly, contested role in debates on climate disclosure. Because market efficiency (encompassing both securities price accuracy and overall capital market allocative efficiency) is generally unobservable, many commentators have instead emphasized the highly visible investor demand for climate-related disclosure as evidenced by shareholder proposals, voting behavior, stewardship policies, and public statements. Unfortunately, investor demand can be disputed, fairly or unfairly, because investor preferences are heterogeneous, dynamic, and difficult to …
Climate Change And The Law Of National Security Adaptation, Mark P. Nevitt
Climate Change And The Law Of National Security Adaptation, Mark P. Nevitt
Faculty Articles
The Department of Defense (DoD) is the largest employer in the world, owns and operates an enormous global real estate portfolio, and emits more Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) than many nations. Entrusted with the national security, the DoD is now threatened by a new enemy—climate change. Climate change imperils national security infrastructure while undermining the military’s capacity to respond to climate-driven disasters at home and abroad. However, legal scholarship has yet to address what I call “the law of national security adaptation” and related questions. For example, how do environmental and climate change laws apply to the U.S. military? What laws …

Theses and Dissertations
Chloroform, Ethanol and Methanol extracts of the leaves from DIGITARIA SANGUINALIS, DIGITARIA ISCHAEMUM and the bark from CARAPA GUIANENSIS found in Guyana were obtained via maceration and reflux extraction processes. Ethanol extracts obtained from the 25-minute reflux process produced the best percentage yield and the most thin layer chromatographic spots. All further analyses were conducted on the ethanol extracts of all plant materials. The ethanolic extracts showed positive phytochemical testing results for Terpenes, Flavonoids, Steroids, Tannins, Phenolic, Proteins, Cardiac Glycoside, Reducing Sugars, and Carbohydrates. Conversely, Saponins were absent in Smooth Crabgrass and Crabwood’s bark but present in Long Hairy Crabgrass. …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Mixed Ligand Complexes Of Ruthenium(Ii) Containing 2,2’-Bipyridine And 3,3’-Dimethyl-1,1’- Methylenebisimidazolium Ligands; A New Synthetic Approach, Matthew Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
Research into solar cells has been prioritized given the global demand for better renewable energy technologies. This demand is a result of the long-term use of fossil fuels, which generates significant pollution in highly populated urban areas. One potential solar cell technology is the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). This kind of solar technology utilizes organometallic dyes to expand the types of wavelengths solar cells can use to generate electricity.12 Ruthenium(II) metal complexes of this type have been investigated heavily for this purpose.13,14,36 The main reasoning behind this is the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) phenomenon that such complexes exhibit. MLCT has often …

Explorations Of A Topology Constructed On The Maximal Ideals Of A Boolean Algebra, Abbigal Moos
Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this thesis is to construct a topology on the collection of maximal ideals of a distributive and complemented lattice using the hull-kernel methodology. Through the construction of this topological space, we discovered that the space is compact, zero-dimensional, and Hausdorff. Next, we looked at the properties of some lattices, namely the power set of a finite set ordered by inclusion and the set of all positives divisors for some arbitrary integer ordered by divisibility. Whenever these lattices were both distributive and complemented, we constructed a topology on the collection of maximal ideals of the lattices using …

Development Of Advanced Germanium Detectors For Rare Event Physics, Sanjay Bhattarai
Dissertations and Theses
High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors are widely used in rare-event physics searches for dark matter, neutrinoless double-beta decay, and solar neutrinos. This dissertation fo- cuses on improving crystal quality by controlling the impurity concentration, dislocation density, and growth environment as well as developing advanced Ge detectors for various physics applications. The dissertation presents experimental investigations of electrical conduction mechanisms in p-type amorphous germanium (a-Ge), which is used as an elec- trical contact material in HPGe detectors. By measuring the surface leakage current from three high-purity planar Ge detectors, we determine the localization length and hopping parameters in a-Ge. The dissertation …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
In this study, the production technology of barite, fluorite, rare-earth elements, and thorium-bearing rare-earth oxides from the Eskişehir-Beylikova were investigated, and the processes that can be used in the production of thorium-free mixed rare earth oxides were tested. The applied processes are roasting, leaching, solvent extraction and precipitation methods, respectively. After all studies, the optimum roasting temperature and roasting duration are determined as 600 °C and 1 hour. In the extraction stage, the highest leaching efficiency is achieved with 5 M HCl, 1-hour leaching duration, 1/3 solid/liquid ratio and 35 °C leaching temperature. While methyl tri C8-C10 ammonium chloride (Adogen …

Paleoecological Investigation Of The Miocene (23.03-5.33 Mya) Rodents (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Anatolia, Hasan Vural, Şakir Önder Özkurt
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
Anatolia’s geographical location as a land bridge between Europe, Asia, and Africa, makes it an important passage for mammal migrations, with a rich fossil potential. However, detailed scientific studies on the Neogene paleogeography of Anatolia are scarce. Rodentia is among the major mammal groups generally adapting to different habitat types and rapidly evolving with the changing geography. Investigating this group provides data to increase the accuracy of ecological analyses. We selected Rodentia fossils from the Miocene excavation sites with published papers, and examined specimens of 14 families from 106 localities. Cricetidae, Muridae, Gliridae, and Sciuridae were found to be most …

Magnetic Anisotropy Of A Sub-Ophiolitic Metamorphic Sole (Mersin Ophiolite, Türkiye), Buğra Çavdar, Antony Morris, Mark Anderson, Luca Menegon, Osman Parlak
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
The Mersin ophiolite of southern Turkey is a well-exposed, Late Cretaceous, Neo-Tethyan suprasubduction
zone ophiolite. It is underlain by metamorphic sole rocks inferred to have formed at the top of a down-going plate during subduction. These have a well-developed foliation and lineation observable in the field (defined by the preferred orientations of hornblende and plagioclase crystals). Here we present the first magnetic fabric data reported from the Mersin ophiolite with such settings. Anisotropy of low field magnetic susceptibility ellipsoids in sampled amphibolites have clustered, NW-plunging minimum principal axes representing poles to a SE-dipping magnetic foliation that aligns with the macroscopic …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
It is aimed to reveal the basement topography, the coal-bearing levels, the alteration zones containing uranium ore, and the tectonic structure prevailing by using two dimensional (2D) seismic reflection method in the Thrace Paleogene-Neogene Basin. In this context, seismic data collected on the six profiles were interpreted by correlating with the data of 97 wells. In the seismic lines, respectively, the metamorphic basement-Eocene boundary, the top of the coal-bearing zone and the boundary of the Danişmen-Ergene formations were confirmed by using the borehole data. By evaluating seismic data, the coal propagation is modeled with three dimensional (3D) figures. Moreover, coal …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
The presence of the evaporate salt zone in Ankara-Polatlı region has been determined by the drillings. It is thought to be the largest reserve in Türkiye. The seismic reflection method was used to determine the top-bottom levels of the zone; its depth; its thickness and extent boundaries; the horstgraben structures; base depth and tectonic movements affecting the study area. Data were collected on three seismic lines. The near-surface tomographic velocity sections were compatible with the top-of-the-zone depth observed in the drillings. As a result of the study, the depth and thickness of the top-bottom of the zone were determined along …
A New Look At The Origin Of N-S Trending Young Basins Of Western Anatolia, Ömer Feyzi Gürer
A New Look At The Origin Of N-S Trending Young Basins Of Western Anatolia, Ömer Feyzi Gürer
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
In the western Anatolia, the tectonic regime transitioned from crustal shortening to extension during Late Cenozoic time and evidence of this event was imprinted on basement lithologies and N-S and E-W oriented two distinct basin sub-types. Here, we examined the exhumation mechanism of the Menderes massif that forms the basement of these basins from a different perspective. The N-S oriented basins overlying different basement rock types were re-evaluated based on new evidence that has potential to put new constrains for interpreting the tectonic evolution of the area. Unroofing of the Menderes Massif must have developed due to compressional core complex. …

Second-Harmonic Signature Of Chiral Spin Structures In W/Pt/Co Heterostructures With Tunable Magnetic Anisotropy, Yang Wang, Ying-Ting Chan, Xiao Wang, Tao Wang, Xuemei Cheng, Weida Wu, John Q. Xiao
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
Second-harmonic Hall voltage (SHV) measurement method has been widely used to characterize the strengths of spin–orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy metal/ferromagnet thin films saturated in the single-domain regime. Here, we show that the magnetic anisotropy of a W/Pt/Co trilayer can be robustly tuned from in-plane to out-of-plane by varying W, Pt, or Co thicknesses. Moreover, in samples with easy-cone anisotropy, SHV measurements exhibit anomalous ‘humps’ in the multidomain regime accessed by applying a nearly out-of-plane external magnetic field. These hump features can only be explained as a result of the formation of Néel-type domain walls, efficiently driven by nevertheless small …

NiCo2O4 (NCO) films grown on MgAl2O4 (001) substrates have been studied using magnetometry, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) based on x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and spin-polarized inverse photoemission spectroscopy (SPIPES) with various thickness down to 1.6 nm. The magnetic behavior can be understood in terms of a layer of optimal NCO and an interfacial layer (1.2± 0.1 nm), with a small canting of magnetization at the surface. The thickness dependence of the optimal layer can be described by the finite-scaling theory with a critical exponent consistent with the high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The interfacial layer couples antiferromagnetically to the optimal layer, …

Forest Management Tradeoffs: Examining Relationships Between Timber Harvest, Carbon Sequestration And Storage, Bioenergy, And Wildlife, Michelle L. Brown
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Timber harvesting is the leading cause of adult tree mortality in forests of the northeastern United States. While current rates of harvest are generally sustainable, there is considerable pressure to increase harvest to meet timber production, climate, and energy goals. Maximizing one of these values may compromise other forest resources, including a wide range of ecosystem services and the conservation of native species. This dissertation investigates the effects of timber harvest on carbon sequestration and storage, bioenergy, and wildlife. First, I estimated current harvest regimes for different forest types and regions across the U.S. states of New York, Vermont, New …

Wildfire Activity, Climate Response, And Ice Core Signal Preservation In The North Pacific Region, Margaret Lonergan
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Wildfires have become more destructive over recent decades with climate change, so understanding how fire regimes will change with further climate change is critical for effective fire management practices. Paleofire records provide insight into how fire regimes have responded to temperature and precipitation variability in the past. Ice cores, such as the Denali ice core from central Alaska, capture regional-scale fire proxies including black carbon at an annual resolution for centuries to millennia. This makes them ideally suited to construct high temporal resolution, regional paleofire records extending back into the Common Era. However, it is critical to understand the instrumental …

Recent research highlights the viability of webcam-based eye tracking as a low-cost alternative to dedicated remote eye trackers. Simultaneously, research shows the importance of understanding emotions of software developers, where it was found that emotions have significant effects on productivity, code quality, and team dynamics. In this paper, we present our work towards an integrated eye-tracking and affect recognition tool for use during software development. This combined approach could enhance our understanding of software development by combining information about the code developers are looking at, along with the emotions they experience. The presented tool utilizes an unmodified webcam to capture …
