Statistical Analyses Of Hemp Cannabinoid Test Results, Rachel J. Stegmeier
Statistical Analyses Of Hemp Cannabinoid Test Results, Rachel J. Stegmeier
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Cannabis sativa L. is a flowering plant used for recreational and industrial purposes that produces a class of compounds called cannabinoids. Industrial hemp is a strain of Cannabis sativa L. that has been propagated to have a low Δ 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9THC) and a high cannabidiol (CBD) content. With recent advancements in legislation, farms are now growing hemp for fiber, CBD production and other hemp derived product purposes but crops risk being destroyed if THC content levels exceed the current maximum legal limit of 0.3%. For the present study hemp samples were dried, ground, extracted with various alcohols, …
Multi Elemental Analysis Of Cannabis Oil Based Products Using Icpms And Microwave Assisted Digestion., Kevin Trevon Marchbanks-Owens
Multi Elemental Analysis Of Cannabis Oil Based Products Using Icpms And Microwave Assisted Digestion., Kevin Trevon Marchbanks-Owens
Theses (2016-Present)
Due to the presence of CBD-(cannabidiol), bioavailable elements as well as industry versatility and relatively low levels of toxicity to the environment. CBD oils have driven the overall demand for Cannabis based plant products in the commercial and medical sector. However, dependent upon the environmental circumstances upon which these plants are grown can leave them susceptible to toxic heavy metal exposure. In fact, the natural metabolism of Cannabis plants makes them a hyperaccumulator of trace metals. This creates a severe health risk for CBD product consumers especially for more vulnerable populations with pre-existing conditions. Furthermore, the risk of heavy metal …
Positive Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Logistic-Type Nonlinearities And Harvesting In Exterior Domains, Eric Jameson
Positive Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Logistic-Type Nonlinearities And Harvesting In Exterior Domains, Eric Jameson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Existing results provide the existence of positive solutions to a class of semilinear elliptic PDEs with logistic-type nonlinearities and harvesting terms both in RN and in bounded domains U ⊂ RN with N ≥ 3, when the carrying capacity of the environment is not constant. We consider these same equations in the exterior domain Ω, defined as the complement of the closed unit ball in RN , N ≥ 3, now with a Dirichlet boundary condition. We first show that the existing techniques forsolving these equations in the whole space RN can be applied to the exterior domain with some …
Error Terms For The Trapezoid, Midpoint, And Simpson's Rules, Jessica E. Coen
Error Terms For The Trapezoid, Midpoint, And Simpson's Rules, Jessica E. Coen
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
When it is not possible to integrate a function we resort to Numerical Integration. For example the ubiquitous Normal curve tables are obtained using Numerical Integration. The antiderivative of the defining function for the normal curve involves the formula for antiderivative of e-x^2 which can't be expressed in the terms of basic functions.
Simpson's rule is studied in most Calculus books, and in all undergraduate Numerical Analysis books, but proofs are not provided. Hence if one is interested in a proof of Simpson's rule, either it can be found in advanced Numerical Analysis books as a special case …

An Analysis Of Associations Between Polarimetric Supercell Signatures, Erik Green
An Analysis Of Associations Between Polarimetric Supercell Signatures, Erik Green
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Supercell thunderstorms produce unique polarimetric radar signatures that are not often observed in unorganized deep convection. Repetitive signatures include deep and persistent differential reflectivity (ZDR) columns and the ZDR arc signature, which are both indicative of thermodynamic and microphysical processes intrinsic to supercells. Prior investigations of supercell polarimetric signatures, both those observed by operational and research radars, and those simulated numerically, reveal positive correlations between the ZDR column depth and cross-sectional area and quantitative characteristics of the radar reflectivity field. This study expands upon prior work by incorporating a dataset of discrete, right moving supercells …

On The Use Of High-Frequency Surface Wave Oceanographic Research Radars As Bistatic Single-Frequency Oblique Ionospheric Sounders, Stephen R. Kaeppler, Ethan S. Miller, Daniel Cole, Teresa Updyke
CCPO Publications
We demonstrate that bistatic reception of high-frequency oceanographic radars can be used as single-frequency oblique ionospheric sounders. We develop methods that are agnostic of the software-defined radio system to estimate the group range from the bistatic observations. The group range observations are used to estimate the virtual height and equivalent vertical frequency at the midpoint of the oblique propagation path. Uncertainty estimates of the virtual height and equivalent vertical frequency are presented. We apply this analysis to observations collected from two experiments run at two locations in different years, but utilizing similar software-defined radio data collection systems. In the first …

Analysis Of Copper(Ii) Using The Ascorbate/Oxygen System – A Valuable Undergraduate Resource, Sean Tobin, John Cassidy, Kevin Kurian, Tony Betts
Articles
In deionised water, ascorbic acid (AH−), through oxidation by oxygen in the presence of copper(II), was found to degrade with zero-order kinetics. The magnitude of the reaction rate varied directly with the copper(II) concentration. At a higher pH (7.4), the same reaction was found to be pseudo-first order. Once again, the magnitude of the rate increased linearly with copper(II) concentration at a micromolar level. Dissolved oxygen levels, in excess AH− and trace copper(II), displayed similar kinetics under both conditions. Monitoring of either AH− levels or dissolved oxygen concentration was found to be a useful novel undergraduate practical laboratory for trace …
Data Acquisition, Analysis And Simulations For The Fermilab Muon G−2 Experiment, Fang Han
Data Acquisition, Analysis And Simulations For The Fermilab Muon G−2 Experiment, Fang Han
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
The goal of the new Muon g-2 E989 experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) is a precise measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, aμ ≡ (g-2)/2. The previous BNL experiment measured the anomaly aμ(BNL) with an uncertainty of 0.54 parts per million (ppm). The discrepancy between the current standard model calculation of the aμ(SM) and the previous measurement aμ(BNL) is over 3σ. The FNAL Muon g-2 experiment aims at increasing the precision to 140 parts per billion (ppb) to resolve the discrepancy between the theoretical …

Present And Future Thermal Regimes Of Intertidal Groundwater Springs In A Threatened Coastal Ecosystem, Jason J. Karrisallen, Aaron A. Mohammed, Joseph Tamborski, Rob C. Jamieson, Serban Danielescu, Barret L. Kurylyk
OES Faculty Publications
In inland settings, groundwater discharge thermally modulates receiving surface water bodies and provides localized thermal refuges; however, the thermal influence of intertidal springs on coastal waters and their thermal sensitivity to climate change are not well studied. We addressed this knowledge gap with a field- and model-based study of a threatened coastal lagoon ecosystem in southeastern Canada. We paired analyses of drone-based thermal imagery with in situ thermal and hydrologic monitoring to estimate discharge to the lagoon from intertidal springs and groundwater-dominated streams in summer 2020. Results, which were generally supported by independent radon-based groundwater discharge estimates, revealed that combined …
Evaluating Similarity Of Cross-Architecture Basic Blocks, Elijah L. Meyer
Evaluating Similarity Of Cross-Architecture Basic Blocks, Elijah L. Meyer
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Vulnerabilities in source code can be compiled for multiple processor architectures and make their way into several different devices. Security researchers frequently have no way to obtain this source code to analyze for vulnerabilities. Therefore, the ability to effectively analyze binary code is essential. Similarity detection is one facet of binary code analysis. Because source code can be compiled for different architectures, the need can arise for detecting code similarity across architectures. This need is especially apparent when analyzing firmware from embedded computing environments such as Internet of Things devices, where the processor architecture is dependent on the product and …

Massive Australian wildfires lofted smoke directly into the stratosphere in the austral summer of 2019/20. The smoke led to increases in optical extinction throughout the midlatitudes of the southern hemisphere that rivalled substantial volcanic perturbations. Previous studies have assumed that the smoke became coated with sulfuric acid and water and would deplete the ozone layer through heterogeneous chemistry on those surfaces, as is routinely observed following volcanic enhancements of the stratospheric sulfate layer. Here, observations of extinction and reactive nitrogen species from multiple independent satellites that sampled the smoke region are compared to one another and to model calculations. The …
Inverse Boundary Value Problems For Polyharmonic Operators With Non-Smooth Coefficients, Landon Gauthier
Inverse Boundary Value Problems For Polyharmonic Operators With Non-Smooth Coefficients, Landon Gauthier
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
We consider inverse boundary problems for polyharmonic operators and in particular, the problem of recovering the coefficients of terms up to order one. The main interest of our result is that it further relaxes the regularity required to establish uniqueness. The proof relies on an averaging technique introduced by Haberman and Tataru for the study of an inverse boundary value problem for a second order operator.

An Introduction To Fractal Analysis, Lucas Yong
An Introduction To Fractal Analysis, Lucas Yong
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Classical analysis is not able to treat functions whose domain is fractal. We present an introduction to analysis on a particular class of fractals known as post-critically finite (PCF) self-similar sets that is suitable for the undergraduate reader. We develop discrete approximations of PCF self-similar sets, and construct discrete Dirichlet forms and corresponding discrete Laplacians that both preserve self-similarity and are compatible with a notion of harmonic functions that is analogous to a classical setting. By taking the limit of these discrete Laplacians, we construct continuous Laplacians on PCF self-similar sets. With respect to this continuous Laplacian, we also construct …
Irrational Philosophy? Kronecker's Constructive Philosophy And Finding The Real Roots Of A Polynomial, Richard B. Schneider
Irrational Philosophy? Kronecker's Constructive Philosophy And Finding The Real Roots Of A Polynomial, Richard B. Schneider
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The prominent mathematician Leopold Kronecker (1823 – 1891) is often relegated to footnotes and mainly remembered for his strict philosophical position on the foundation of mathematics. He held that only the natural numbers are intuitive, thus the only basis for all mathematical objects. In fact, Kronecker developed a complete school of thought on mathematical foundations and wrote many significant algebraic works, but his enigmatic writing style led to his historical marginalization. In 1887, Kronecker published an extended version of his paper, “On the Concept of Number,” translated into English in 2010 for the first time by Edward T. Dean, who …

An Introduction To Federated Learning And Its Analysis, Manjari Ganapathy
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the onset of the digital era, data privacy is one of the most predominant issues. Decentralized learning is becoming popular as the data can remain within local entities by maintaining privacy. Federated Learning is a decentralized machine learning approach, where multiple clients collaboratively learn a model, without sharing raw data. There are many practical challenges in solving Federated Learning, which include communication set up, data heterogeneity and computational capacity of clients. In this thesis, I explore recent methods of Federated Learning with various settings, such as data distributions and data variability, used in several applications. In addition, I, specifically, …
Using Deep Learning For Children Brain Image Analysis, Rafael Toche Pizano
Using Deep Learning For Children Brain Image Analysis, Rafael Toche Pizano
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Analyzing the correlation between brain volumetric/morphometry features and cognition/behavior in children is important in the field of pediatrics as identifying such relationships can help identify children who may be at risk for illnesses. Understanding these relationships can not only help identify children who may be at risk of illnesses, but it can also help evaluate strategies that promote brain development in children. Currently, one way to do this is to use traditional statistical methods such as a correlation analysis, but such an approach does not make it easy to generalize and predict how brain volumetric/morphometry will impact cognition/behavior. One of …
Visual Analysis Of Historical Lessons Learned During Exercises For The United States Air Force Europe (Usafe), Samantha O'Rourke
Visual Analysis Of Historical Lessons Learned During Exercises For The United States Air Force Europe (Usafe), Samantha O'Rourke
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Within the United States Air Force, there are repeated patterns of differences observed during exercises. After an exercise is completed, forms are filled out detailing observations, successes, and recommendations seen throughout the exercise. At the most, no two reports are identical and must be analyzed by personnel and then categorized based on common themes observed. Developing a computer application will greatly reduce the time and resources used to analyze each After Action Report. This application can visually represent these observations and optimize the effectiveness of these exercises. The visualization is done through graphs displaying the frequency of observations and recommendations. …
Image Analysis Of Charged Bimodal Colloidal Systems In Microgravity., Adam J. Cecil
Image Analysis Of Charged Bimodal Colloidal Systems In Microgravity., Adam J. Cecil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Colloids are suspensions of two or more phases and have been topics of research for advanced, tunable materials for decades. Stabilization of colloids is typically attributed to thermodynamic mechanisms; however, recent studies have identified transport or entropic mechanisms that can potentially stabilize a thermodynamically unstable colloidal system. In this study, suspensions of silsesquioxane microparticles and zirconia nanoparticles were dispersed in a nitric acid solution and allowed to aggregate for 8-12 days in microgravity aboard the International Space Station. The suspensions were subsequently imaged periodically at 2.5x magnification. Due to the inadequacy of existing image analysis programs, the python package “Colloidspy” …
Using Grids As Password Entry Devices, Karol Lejmbach
Using Grids As Password Entry Devices, Karol Lejmbach
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The classic text-based password has been around for a very long time. A lot of security research has been conducted on it. A set of best practices has been available for many years stressing the use of longer and more complex passwords. The issue with this approach is that humans have a hard time recalling long complex sequences of characters. Worse, the more complex the string of characters the more prone it is to being written down which is the most detrimental security threat. The goal of this paper is to introduce and provide an introductory analysis of a grid-based …
Genetics Of Pediatric Musculoskeletal Disorders, Lilian Antunes
Genetics Of Pediatric Musculoskeletal Disorders, Lilian Antunes
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pediatric musculoskeletal disorders are an extremely broad category of diseases that are often inherited. While individually rare, collectively these disorders are common, affecting around 3% of live births in the US. Despite the mounting clinical and molecular evidence for a genetic etiology, the cause for many patients with pediatric musculoskeletal disorders remain largely unknown. Major challenges in rare pediatric diseases include recruiting large numbers of patients and determining the significance and functional impacts of variants associated with disease within individuals or families. Whole exome sequencing (WES) is a powerful tool to identify coding variants that are associated with rare pediatric …
An Analysis Of A Hybrid Steel Bridge, Andrew Iglehart
An Analysis Of A Hybrid Steel Bridge, Andrew Iglehart
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The American Institute of Steel Construction hosts a competition for graduating college seniors each year. The competition is designing and fabricating a scaled steel bridge within certain parameters. Each year the parameters change to allow different seniors to face similar challenges without copying the previous year’s work. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, a bridge was fabricated as per the rules in the 2020, and the same bridge was used for the 2021 competition. With a bridge already fabricated and being used for the competition, a question arose about analyzing the bridge.
This thesis encompasses the entire analysis of the steel …

Glacial meltwater from the western Antarctic Ice Sheet is hypothesized to be an important source of cryospheric iron, fertilizing the Southern Ocean, yet its trace-metal composition and factors that control its dispersal remain poorly constrained. Here we characterize meltwater iron sources in a heavily glaciated western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) fjord. Using dissolved and particulate ratios of manganese to iron in meltwaters, porewaters, and seawater, we show that surface glacial melt and subglacial plumes contribute to the seasonal cycle of iron and manganese within a fjord still relatively unaffected by climate-change-induced glacial retreat. Organic ligands derived from the phytoplankton bloom and …
Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu
Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In Calculus we learned that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k = [n(n+1)]/2 , that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^2 = [n(n+1)(2n+1)]/6 , and that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^{3} = (n(n+1)/2)^{2}. These formulas are useful when solving for the area below quadratic or cubic function over an interval [a, b]. This tedious process, solving for areas under a quadratic or a cubic, served as motivation for the introduction of Riemman integrals. For the overzealous math student, these steps were replaced by a simpler method of evaluating antiderivatives at the endpoints a and b. From my recollection, a former instructor informed us to do the value of memorizing these formulas. …
The Recreation Of Wound Patterns Using Various Tissue Simulants For Crime Scene Reconstruction, Breanne Steimle
The Recreation Of Wound Patterns Using Various Tissue Simulants For Crime Scene Reconstruction, Breanne Steimle
Forensic Science Master's Projects
Within the field of forensic science, there are limited reliable methods for the simulation of pattern injuries on human skin and tissue that may aid in aspects of crime scene reconstruction. The tissue simulant must be of sufficient integrity for recording blunt force trauma and bite mark impressions, electrocution, cutting, and gunshot wound related injuries for the purpose of re-enactment, court exhibition, and distance determination. For wound reenactments (such as blunt force trauma, bite mark impressions and electrocution), dead skin and tissue from human cadavers do not show wounding patterns that would occur on live tissue. This study examines different …
Changes In The Scattering Phase Shifts For Partial Waves Of Ultracold Particles At Different Energies, Kaaviyan Faezi
Changes In The Scattering Phase Shifts For Partial Waves Of Ultracold Particles At Different Energies, Kaaviyan Faezi
Honors Scholar Theses
At low energies, scattering phase shifts, the difference in phases between the incoming and outgoing spherical waves in scattering, for different partial waves follow a similar pattern. The phase shift curves, which are a function of the angular momentum quantum number for different scattering energy, obtain resonances after reaching their maxima, and as energy is increased, these resonances become smaller and eventually disappear. Using numerical methods involving the use of Chebyshev polynomials, we solve the wave equation for a scattering potential to obtain the radial equation. From the radial equation we then find the scattering phase shift for a particular …

Detection Of Snps Associated With Bone Loss Rate By Using Machine Learning Approaches, Avinash Yaganapu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases seen in postmenopausal women, it decreases the bone density and quality, and later causes bone loss. Generally, bone loss occurs when bone losses its content and become porous: a sponge like substance. In most Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS), researchers perform experiments with genomic data that contains some millions of numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and checks their association with the trait or disease. In this thesis, we performed two separate analyses with 2207 (of bone loss and bone gain) and 645 (of bone loss) instances separately. For predicting the SNPs …

Blockchain promises to provide a distributed and decentralized means of trust among untrusted users. However, in recent years, a shift from decentrality to centrality has been observed in the most accepted Blockchain system, i.e., Bitcoin. This shift has motivated researchers to identify the cause of decentrality, quantify decentrality and analyze the impact of decentrality. In this work, we take a holistic approach to identify and quantify decentrality in Blockchain based systems. First, we identify the emergence of centrality in three layers of Blockchain based systems, namely governance layer, network layer and storage layer. Then, we quantify decentrality in these layers …

© 2020, © 2020, The Author(s). Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has gained burgeoning attention for potassium-ion storage because of its large theoretical capacity, wide availability, and environmental benignity. Nevertheless, the inherently poor conductivity gives rise to its sluggish reaction kinetics and inferior rate capability. Here, we report the direct graphene growth over TiO2 nanotubes by virtue of chemical vapor deposition. Such conformal graphene coatings effectively enhance the conductive environment and well accommodate the volume change of TiO2 upon potassiation/depotassiation. When paired with an activated carbon cathode, the graphene-armored TiO2 nanotubes allow the potassium-ion hybrid capacitor full cells to harvest an energy/power …
