The principal-factor solution is probably the most widely used technique in factor analysis and a relatively straight forward method to determine the minimum number of independent dimensions needed to account for most of the variance in the original set of variables.

The principal components approach to parsimony was first proposed by Karl Pearson (1901) who studied the problem for the case of nonstochastic variables, and in a different context. Hotelling provided the full development of the method (1933) and Thomson (1947) was the first to apply it to the principal factor analysis.

In this paper we will consider the problem of selecting the best, or optimal, numerical method of solution to a given mathematical problem. The admissible numerical methods will be a clearly defined set for each problem. Obviously, in order to find the best method in this set, we must have a clear mathematical formulation of just what "best" means; this will be the intent of Theorem 0.1. Intuitively, the best method will be understood to be the one which minimizes the maximum possible error where this error will be measured in terms of the norm of a given Hilbert space. …

Sixteen "model building" and "model selection" procedures commonly encountered in industry, all of which were initially alleged to be capable of identifying the best model from the collection of 2k possible linear models corresponding to a given set of k predictors in a multiple linear regression analysis, were individually summarized and subsequently evaluated by considering their comparative advantages and limitations from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint. It was found that none of the proposed procedures were absolutely infallible and that several were actually unsuitable. However, it was also found that most of these techniques could still be …

The Swan Peak Formation in the Bear River Range of northern Utah and southeastern Idaho varies in thickness from 0 feet to over 400 feet. It consists of three units: (1) a lower unit of interbedded quartzites, shales, and limestones; (2) A middle unit of interbedded quartzites and shales; (3) An upper unit of nearly homogeneous quartzites. The different sedimentary structures, ichnofossils, body fossils, and mineral compositions of each unit represent different environments of deposition. The lower unit probably was deposited in a shallow-shelf environment, and its sediments grade upward into probably shoreface-, tidal-flat-, and lagoonal deposits of the middle …

The main objectives of this investigation were three­ fold: (1) to design and fabricate a heated inlet system for the mass spectrometer; (2) to obtain the mass spectra of the major tobacco alkaloids under normal operating conditions; and ( 3) to determine the ionization potentials of the alkaloids as well as the appearance potentials of some of the major fragment ions derived from the alkaloids.

Within the last decade several important studies have been made on the large degradation of products of proteins. However, little work has been done on the intermediate degradation products. This study is concerned with the chromatographic separation of intermediate fragments from chrymotryptie hydrolysates of bovine plasma albumin and the determination of the molecular weights of the fragments. An automatic recording differential refractometer employing a differential cell of original design permitted the observation of chromatographic components as they were eluted f rom a column of Sephadex G-50. A process of column chromatography of human erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase, using a cationic exchange resin, was investigated as a possible method for the primary partial purification of the enzyme on a large scale. The investigation was based, first; on a detailed study of the enzymatic stability to variation in hydrogen-ion and salt concentrations for periods of time extending to forty eight hours and, second; on an investigation of the degree of adsorption by the resin of the enzyme at various pH values within the pH range of enzyme stability. This work represents a study of the biological oxidation of copper sulfide minerals. The principal objective of the study was to determine the extent of bacterial oxidation on copper containing sulfide minerals. It was also desired to determine if the bacteria could oxidize copper sulfides in the absence of iron. A better understanding of the nitrogen requirements of the organisms was desired. Minerals used in this study were Bingham Canyon Float Concentrate, chalcopyrite, covellite, calcocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, and reagent grade copper sulfide. The primary purpose of this paper is to present specific data as a means of explaining the sedimentation conditions at the time of deposition of the Oriskany Sandstone. The data were obtained through the use of laboratory methods upon specimens taken from several outcrops in the vicinity of Monterey, Virginia (see Darton's U.S.G.S. folio No. 51). In addition to the presentation of objective results, the author has attempted to make tentative interpretations of them, based primarily upon textural and shape analysis of the sediment.
