The Reduction Of Carbonyl Compounds By Sodium Naphthalenide, James Stinnett Nov 1971

The Reduction Of Carbonyl Compounds By Sodium Naphthalenide, James Stinnett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to study the reactions of sodium naphthaienide with various aromatic carbonyl compounds, particularly aromatic aldehydes and ketones. Although sodium naphthalenide was first investigated in 1936 by Scott et al, the synthetic utility of this alkali metal adduct in organic chemistry has only recently been explored. It was thought that sodium naphthalenide might provide a synthetic advantage, as compared to sodium metal solutions, in the reduction of carbonyl functions to their respective glycols and/or alcohols.

Thermionic Space Charge Oscillations, William Carl Nov 1971

Thermionic Space Charge Oscillations, William Carl

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Thermionic electrons emitted into a potential well will produce radiation, the frequency of which is determined by the transit time of the electrons. This paper investigates the case where radiation is produced by a vacuum tube in which two Pierce guns face each other, one acting as the emitter, the other acting as a reflector. Symmetry and the focusing of the electron beam by the Pierce guns make it possible to make an accurate determination of the electron transit time. Measurements showed that the period of the oscillation was 1.5 times the period required for an electron to traverse the …

Mössbauer-Effect Studies Of The Phase Transitions In Antiferroelectric Pbzro₃ And Ferroelectric Pbti₀.₀₂Zr₀.₈O₃, James P. Canner, C. M. Yagnik, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James Nov 1971

Mössbauer-Effect Studies Of The Phase Transitions In Antiferroelectric Pbzro₃ And Ferroelectric Pbti₀.₀₂Zr₀.₈O₃, James P. Canner, C. M. Yagnik, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer spectra were studied for the antiferroelectric compound PbZrO3 and for the closely related ferroelectric PbTi0.2Zr0.8O3. In both cases, a substitution of 5-mol% BiFeO3 was made to permit the Mössbauer measurements. Little difference was found in the isomer shift in these compounds, whether they were in the ferroelectric, antiferroelectric, or cubic state, indicating that the bonding character is not affected by the transitions among the states. There was a pronounced and approximately equivalent dip in the recoil-free fraction at the Curie points of both the antiferroelectric and ferroelectric materials, associated with …

Precambrian Geology Of The Central Nacimiento Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Kent Richard Reed Oct 1971

Precambrian Geology Of The Central Nacimiento Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Kent Richard Reed

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The oldest Precambrian rocks in the area of study are represented by abundant inclusions and schlieren of hornblendite, plagioclase-hornblende schist, and plagioclase-hornblende-biotite schist. These inclusions are remnants of a pre-batholithic metamorphic terrane.

The next oldest, and dominant rock in the central Nacimiento Mountains is gneiss that ranges in composition from quartz monzonite to granodiorite. Where strongly sheared, the rock is microcline-biotite-quartz-plagioclase schist. Gradational zones of schist within the gneiss were mapped separately. The gneiss and the schist are cut by metamorphosed spessartite dikes and by leucocratic dikes of various textures and compositions.

Intruding the gneiss in the southeastern part of …

Cellular Inactivation By Heavy Ions, Neutrons, And Pions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Hamayoonfar Oct 1971

Cellular Inactivation By Heavy Ions, Neutrons, And Pions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Hamayoonfar

Robert Katz Publications

The delta-ray theory of the inactivation of cells by energetic heavy ions describes cellular survival after heavy ion bombardment through a two-component survival model, in which 4 operational parameters (E0,m0, σ0, and κ) describe the response of a particular cellular variety in a particular ambient condition, for an arbitrary radiation environment. The quantities m and E0 are the extrapolation number and extrapolated D-37 dose of the survival curve after gamma-ray irradiation. The quantities σ0 and κ are found from the initial slope of survival curves after irradiation with ions of different LET, …

A Two-Layer Model Of The North Atlantic Thermocline, P. P. Niiler, Edward R. Simco, R. Larue Oct 1971

A Two-Layer Model Of The North Atlantic Thermocline, P. P. Niiler, Edward R. Simco, R. Larue

Faculty Articles

A two-layer model of mid-oceanic thermocline is developed, and a comparison of the depth and temperature of the thermocline in this model is made with a root-mean-square description of the hydrographic structure of the North Atlantic. It is shown that the Sverdrup balance is maintained within the rms errors, and the entire estimated heat flux from the atmosphere is used to produce the observed density changes along the path of persistent flow.

Measurement Of Currents In Lake Mead With The Deep Water Isotopic Current Analyzer (Dwica), J. J. Sartoris, D. A. Hoffman, Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

In Nov 1967, a Deep Water Isotopic Current Analyzer (DWICA) was used to study current patterns in the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead to determine if low-quality water from Las Vegas Bay might enter the Southern Nevada Water Project intake on Saddle Island. Secondary objectives were to study the general current patterns in Boulder Basin and the effect of power discharges at Hoover Dam on these currents. Results of current measurements at 3 stations in Boulder Basin are given. Observations indicate a definite possibility that low-quality water from Las Vegas Bay might enter the water intake on Saddle Island. Current …

Nuclear-Magnetic-Resonance Studies Of The Semiconductor-To-Metal Transition In Chlorine-Doped Cadmium Sulfide, Frank D. Adams, David C. Look, Carlton L. Brown, Donald R. Locker Oct 1971

Nuclear-Magnetic-Resonance Studies Of The Semiconductor-To-Metal Transition In Chlorine-Doped Cadmium Sulfide, Frank D. Adams, David C. Look, Carlton L. Brown, Donald R. Locker

Physics Faculty Publications

Spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) and Knight shifts were measured for Cd113 nuclei in 12 CdS crystals doped with various amounts of chlorine. Hall coefficients were measured in order to estimate conduction-electron concentrations. Data were obtained for all samples at 300 °K and for some highly doped samples at 77, 4.2, and 2.13 °K. Metallic properties were observed in all samples having electron concentrations n>2×1018 cm-3. At 300 °K, we find 1/T1∝n for nonmetallic samples and 1/T1∝n2/3 when samples are metallic. The latter proportionality continues to hold at lower …

Gravity Investigations Over A Salt Structure Near Lübbecke, Northern Germany, Reinhard K. Frohlich Oct 1971

Gravity Investigations Over A Salt Structure Near Lübbecke, Northern Germany, Reinhard K. Frohlich

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A detailed gravity survey was conducted parallel to the “Wiehengebirge” northwest of Minden in Northern Germany. The survey localized between Liibbecke and Levern a salt deposit, which is known as “Münder Mergel” salt of the Upper Jurassic. The salt deposit forms a cylindrical structure with an axis striking NWW. With a deep drill hole detailed interpretation was possible using the polygon method of TALWANI, WORZEL and LANDISMAN [1959], The section shapes of salt bodies under eight profiles show asymmetrical figures of two salt units. Both increase in thickness strongly to the northeast, where the salt is interrupted by a fault …

Detection And Identification Of Molecular Water Pollutants By Laser Raman Spectroscopy, Eugene B. Bradley, Charles A. Frenzel, John Reeves, Robert Mcconnell, Kay Lane Oct 1971

Detection And Identification Of Molecular Water Pollutants By Laser Raman Spectroscopy, Eugene B. Bradley, Charles A. Frenzel, John Reeves, Robert Mcconnell, Kay Lane

KWRRI Research Reports

Laser Raman spectroscopy is evolving into a primary tool for the Identification of molecular water pollutants. This study pushes the limits of detectivity of carbon disulfide and benzene to ~ 20 ppm in water solutions using a high-resolution Raman spectrometer, cooled detectors, and photon counting techniques. The primary limiting factors were found to be the low throughput and the scattered light performance of the monochromator as well as insufficient laser energy.

An optomized design for a pollution-measuring instrument is suggested, and a prototype has been built which is useful with any value of excitation energy short of sample degrading. The …

An Evaluation Of A Stable Isotope Of Dysprosium For Labeling And Tracing Sedimentary Particles, Charles Glenn Boone Oct 1971

An Evaluation Of A Stable Isotope Of Dysprosium For Labeling And Tracing Sedimentary Particles, Charles Glenn Boone

OES Theses and Dissertations

An evaluation of the application of dysprosium oxide as a tracer coating to surface label sedimentary particles is made. Physical and chemical properties of the labeled sand are studied. Effective diameters and settling properties of the tracer sand are compared with unlabeled sand. A total of 8.51 kg of labeled sand was placed on the beach at Camp Pendleton. Dispersal patterns obtained 1 and 4 hours after tracer injection indicate a general down current mean tracer migration rate of 0.21 cm/sec (0.42ft/sec). An absolute detection limit of 4 or 5 parts per 100,000 and a real detection limit, after field …

Comment On Electron Scattering In The Image Potential Well, Pavel Smejtek, M. Silver Oct 1971

Comment On Electron Scattering In The Image Potential Well, Pavel Smejtek, M. Silver

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Comments are made on the model of electron injection into SiO₂ proposed by Berglund and Powell. Their assumptions on electron scattering, disregarding the change of the escape cone with the distance from the emitter, lead to serious underestimation of the injected current. Two alternative models of electron injection, based solely on elastic scattering are discussed and do not predict the experimental results. We suggest that observed field dependence of the injected current into SiO₂ indicates that energy relaxation associated with the injected electrons is responsible for the voltage dependence of the current.

Sevier River Basin Floods 1852-1967, United States Department Of Agriculture, Economic Research Service, Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service Sep 1971

Sevier River Basin Floods 1852-1967, United States Department Of Agriculture, Economic Research Service, Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service

Elusive Documents

This chronology of Sevier River Basin floods extends from 1852 to

1967. Most common and destructive are dry mantle floods, which flow as

a muddy mortar-like substance containing 40 to 55 percent water. Hundreds

of tons of protective topsoil are removed from watershed lands,

debris and boulders are picked up as the flow travels down steep stream

channel gradients, and then the flood is debouched into communities and

on to productive cropland.

Analysis Of Water Reuse Alternatives In An Integrated Urban And Agricultural Area, A. Bruce Bishop, David W. Hendricks Sep 1971

Analysis Of Water Reuse Alternatives In An Integrated Urban And Agricultural Area, A. Bruce Bishop, David W. Hendricks

Reports

Intoduction

The growing demands on our existing water supplies and the current problems of water shortage emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to analysis and planning of water reuse. The primary focus, heretofore, has been on the treatment technology for achieving water reuse.

The concept of reuse, however, should be broadened to consider a totally integrated urban and agricultural system. This necessitates a systems analysis where water reuse, together with all other water dispositions, is considered in the context of its contribution to the total water resources pool of a region.

The components of the water resource system are …
