The "New Hampshire Continental Shelf Geophysical Database: 2016-2017 Field Campaign - Stations and Sediment Data" contains sediment grain size data from a major field campaign conducted in 2016-2017 and from the UNH Ocean Engineering 972 Hydrographic Field Course classes in 2012, 2014, and 2018. In total, sixteen one-day cruises provided 150 samples for grain size analysis. The database provides complete descriptions for each sample including identification, station and sample characteristics, sediment classifications, grain size statistics, and grain size distribution. The UNH CCOM/JHC "New Hampshire Continental Shelf Historical Geophysical Database: 1971 to 2015 - Sediment Data" contains sediment grain size data and classifications from studies conducted between 1971 and 2015. In total, grain size data was available for 725 bottom sediment samples. Included are sample identification information, station and sample characteristics, sediment classifications, grain size statistics, and grain size distribution. Not all of these parameters were available for every study. Samples were analyzed with standard sieve and pipette analyses after Folk (1980). Characterising patterns of habitat use is an important first step for effective conservation planning. Species restricted to low-lying islands are at greatest risk from climate change-related sea level rise, and requirements for breeding and foraging habitat may determine their risk from tidal inundation. The endangered Micronesian Scrubfowl (Megapodius laperouse senex) is a model species for understanding these impacts. This species faces the cumulative challenges of tourist visitation, invasive species, and rising sea levels, yet little is understood about its habitat use in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon Conservation Area (RISL) of Palau. Stormwater pollution is a major cause of water quality impairment. Much of the existing stormwater infrastructures provide little or no treatment, especially for dissolved pollutants. Due to the capital cost of installing new infrastructure, retrofitting existing grey infrastructures is a promising alternative to reduce stormwater pollution. In this study, aluminum-based drinking water treatment residuals (WTR), a byproduct from drinking water treatment was combined with other common supplies (sand and carbon material) and developed as adsorbent media for use in catch basin inserts to remove total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and dissolved Cu, Pb, and Zn from stormwater runoff. Research Study
Warming climate and resulting declines in seasonal snowpack have been associated with drought stress and tree mortality in seasonally snow-covered watersheds worldwide. Meanwhile, increasing forest density has further exacerbated drought stress due to intensified tree-tree competition. Using a uniquely detailed dataset of population-level forest growth (n=2495 sampled trees), we examined how inter-annual variability in growth relates to snow volume across a range of forest densities (e.g., competitive environments) in sites spanning a broad aridity gradient across the United States. Port sediments are often contaminated with metals and organic compounds from anthropogenic sources. Port dredging can remobilize contaminated sediments, resulting in harmful impacts to the benthic community. Twelve sediment cores were collected from four Port Everglades, Florida sites and a control site; surface sediment was collected at two nearby coral reef sites. Sediment cores, sampled every 5 cm, were quantified for 14 heavy metals using induced coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Geo-accumulation index shows moderate-to-strong contamination of As and Mo in port sediments, and potential ecological risk indicates moderate-to-significantly high overall metal contamination. Mid‐infrared spectroscopic analysis of the Moon and other airless bodies requires a full accounting of spectral variation due to the unique thermal environment in airless body regoliths and the substantial differences between spectra acquired under airless body conditions and those measured in an ambient environment on Earth. Because there exists a thermal gradient within the upper hundreds of microns of lunar regolith, the data acquired by the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment are not isothermal with wavelength. The remote Kimberley coast of north-western Australia is one of the few marine environments domains on earth largely unaffected by human use. However, the region is undergoing increasing economic importance as a destination for tourism and significant coastal developments associated with oil and gas exploration. This dataset and the methods used to obtain it were described in "Molecular insights on aging and aqueous phase processing from ambient biomass burning emissions-influenced Po Valley fog and aerosol” submitted to Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics in March of 2018. Briefly, two samples of ambient fog water and two samples of ambient aerosol collected in the Po Valley (Italy) during the 2013 Supersito field campaign were analyzed using negative mode electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). This dataset and the methods used to obtain it were described in “Molecular and physical characteristics of aerosol at a remote marine free troposphere site: Implications for atmospheric aging” submitted to Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics in February 2018. Briefly, three long-range transported organic aerosol samples were analyzed using negative mode electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with a mass resolving power of 400,000 (defined at m/z 400).
