This paper is concerned with the analysis of the set of orders on a formally real field using category and sheaf theory as tools. We topologize the set of orders in a way similar to that used in the prime spectrum of algebraic geometry and define a presheaf of groups using the notion of inverse limits. We then find necessary and sufficient conditions that these presheaves be sheaves. An experimental study was done to determine the effectiveness of an instructional method for older ambulatory patients taking prescribed self-administered medications. This method was developed to emphasize the physicians' specific orders, the purpose of medications, feedback of instruction and a plan for remembering and recording medications. The hypothesis tested was that a selected group of ambulatory patients age 60 and over with the instructional method would make significantly fewer errors than a similar control group with no instructions.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine factors which may influence the survival time of mice infected with Trypanosoma equiperdum and the effects of T. equiperdum on mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

In order to maintain experimentally obtained standard hours of survival (88 hrs) in mice inoculated intraperitoneally with 150,000 T. equiperdum, it was found that trypanosomes removed from the donor rat should be kept at 25 C and all counts, dilutions of the organisms, and injection should be completed within 1 hour after removal from the donor host. A study was conducted to identify selected needs of patients receiving nursing care at home through the Loma Linda University Hospital Department of Home Care. The descriptive survey was used. Fifty patient home care records were reviewed.

From the general information secured, it was found that 68 percent of the patients studied were women. One-half of all patients were under sixty years of age. Fifty-four percent lived with a spouse only, while 26 percent lived with their family. There were 20 percent who lived alone and six of these were over the age of sixty. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of midpalatal suture separation on the craniofacial complex by quantitative roentgenographic analysis.

Ten female Macaca mulatta monkeys were randomly grouped for experimentation. Six animals were paired in groups for two months of treatment, four months of treatment followed by two months of post retention, and six months of treatment. The four remaining monkeys were paired and served as control animals for two and six month periods. Total activation of the expansion appliances in the treated animals was completed over a three week period.

Modification of cephalometric roentgenographic procedures provided a means to identify the anterior borders of the right and left masseter muscles and relate them to surrounding dentoskeletal elements. Attachment of short, stiff, wires to the cheeks in a position superficial to the anterior borders of the muscles, subsequent to palpation and prior to exposure of the roentgenographic film, was the procedure used. A convenience sample of 480 Caucasians using original diagnostic cephalometric films was selected to evaluate the nasion-menton and sella-gonion distances and their relationship to the mandibular plane angle.

The anterior facial height was represented by the nasion-menton plane. The posterior facial height was represented by sella-gonion plane. The facial depth was represented by sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes. The mandibular plane angle was represented by the intersection of the sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes.

Two-hour postprandial blood sugar determinations were carried out on 500 patients referred for periodontal care. The mean percentage of alveolar bone loss around the mandibular bicuspid teeth was established for each individual. The subjects were then grouped according to blood sugar levels and the mean alveolar bone loss was calculated. The group was separated into male and female sub-groups and data was computed for these segments as well as the total sample. The data was evaluated in a similar manner for those subjects between 40 and 49 years of age.

The sample considered was made up of one hundred and forth-four individuals--50 males and 94 females--being treated in the Graduate Orthodontic Department of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. Like other devices for approximate integration the Romberg method has its origin in the exhaustion techniques developed by the Greeks for determining the areas of figures enclosed by lines in the plane. A study was undertaken to survey by questionnaire and interview methods the breakfast and snack habits of Adventist and non-Adventist adolescents. The purposes of the study were: (I) to find out if there is any difference in the practices of Adventist and non-Adventist teenagers, and (2) to determine their attitudes toward snacking and omission of breakfast.

Results of the questionnaire were coded, punched onto IBM cards, and fed into computing machines for item and statistical analysis. The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not patients and nurses derived a similar meaning from pictures of a nurse touching a patient in various ways. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. They were asked to focus upon the photographed nurse's touch and to tell in one or two words what meaning they felt that the nurse was trying to convey to the patient by her touch. A total of 223 cephalometric radiographs selected from six contemporary western United States and Alaskans native groups were analyzed by use of the Bjork cephalometric analysis. Those native groups selected were the Eskimos, Apaches, Navajos, Papagos, Pimas and Mayos. Approximately thirty to forty natives from each group were used in the study with ages ranging from thirteen to thirty-five years. The majority were in the fifteen to twenty year age range.

The morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in five contemporary Western Indian and Alaskan Eskimo groups have been investigated by the use of study models of the dental archs. The sample consisted of 216 individuals, including 44 Navajos, 43 Apaches, 40 Papagos, 42 Pimas and 47 Alaskan Eskimos.

The first purpose of the study was to determine the extent of investigator error. This was accomplished by remeasuring many morphologic traits of the dentition in 125 Indians which had previously been measured by different investigators using the same study models. In this paper we derive some first results on convergence algebras, which are universal algebras with a convergence structure. The first concept was defined some time ago and a unified study of it is available in [4]. Convergence functions were first defined in [7] and have been studied in further works by Kent and others. Failure of the data to satisfy the assumption of normality may lead to an invalid result. Some statistical results, however, have been shown to be robust to the failure of the data to meet normality. Two computer programs were developed using a CDC 3100. They were written in FORTRAN IV.

One program uses four tape drives, one card reader, and one printer. It will calculate factorial analysis of variance with or without covariance and/or multivariate analysis for one to eight factors and up to twenty-five variables.

The other program is used for completely randomized designs, randomized block designs, and latin square designs. It will handle twenty-five treatments, rows (blocks), and columns. The program can handle fifteen variables using any number of these variables for covariates.

Model estimation programming provides a method for obtaining extreme solutions subject to constraints. Functions which are continuous with continuous first and second derivatives in the neighborhood of the solution are approximated using quadratic polynomials (termed estimating functions) derived from computed or experimental data points. Using the estimating functions, an approximation problem is solved by a numerical adaptation of the method of Lagrange. The method is not limited by the concavity of the objective function.
