A Proof Of Bell's Inequality In Quantum Mechanics Using Causal Interactions, James M. Robins, Tyler J. Vanderweele, Richard D. Gill

COBRA Preprint Series

We give a simple proof of Bell's inequality in quantum mechanics which, in conjunction with experiments, demonstrates that the local hidden variables assumption is false. The proof sheds light on relationships between the notion of causal interaction and interference between particles.

Advances In Graph-Cut Optimization: Multi-Surface Models, Label Costs, And Hierarchical Costs, Andrew T. Delong Sep 2011

Advances In Graph-Cut Optimization: Multi-Surface Models, Label Costs, And Hierarchical Costs, Andrew T. Delong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Computer vision is full of problems that are elegantly expressed in terms of mathematical optimization, or energy minimization. This is particularly true of "low-level" inference problems such as cleaning up noisy signals, clustering and classifying data, or estimating 3D points from images. Energies let us state each problem as a clear, precise objective function. Minimizing the correct energy would, hypothetically, yield a good solution to the corresponding problem. Unfortunately, even for low-level problems we are confronted by energies that are computationally hard—often NP-hard—to minimize. As a consequence, a rather large portion of computer vision research is dedicated to proposing …

Diabetes Prediction In Pima Indians Using Ann And Statistical Techniques, Kuldeep Kumar, Ping Zhang

Kuldeep Kumar

Due to the fact that Pima Indian tribe has lived in the same location for an unmitigated number of years, a vast source of information of these people has been gained, which helps researchers for the study of diabetes and possible genetic factors of the disease. In this paper, we use Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and some statistical techniques for the prediction of diabetes. All the prediction models are evaluated with ROC curves.

How To Make Teaching Of Statistics More Effective In Business Schools?, Kuldeep Kumar

Kuldeep Kumar

Statistics is taught in almost all Business Schools as a core course and prerequisite to may advance economics, finance and accountancy courses. However, Statistics has to be taught in a different way in Business Schools as compared to how it is taught in their own statistics department. There should be more emphasis on applications in Business area rather than theory. There has been lot of interest in teaching of statistics in Business schools for a very long time, for example see Cox (1965), Moore (1976) and Love and Hildebrand (2002). This paper discusses author's experience of teaching statistics in an …

A Brief Review Of Recent Research Trends On Applications Of Computational And Statistical Techniques In Financial & Business Intelligence, Kuldeep Kumar, Sukanto Bhattacharya

Kuldeep Kumar

Artificial neural networks and statistical techniques like decision trees, discriminant analysis, logistic regression and survival analysis play a crucial role in Business Intelligence. These predictive analytical tools exploit patterns found in historical data to make predictions about future events. In this paper we have shown some recent developments of a few of these techniques in financial and business intelligence applications like fraud detection, bankruptcy prediction and credit rating scoring.

Longitudinal Analysis Of Spatiotemporal Processes: A Case Study Of Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Multiple Sclerosis, Russell T. Shinohara, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian S. Caffo, Daniel S. Reich Sep 2011

Longitudinal Analysis Of Spatiotemporal Processes: A Case Study Of Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Multiple Sclerosis, Russell T. Shinohara, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian S. Caffo, Daniel S. Reich

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease in which inflammatory lesions form in the brain. In many active MS lesions, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is disrupted and blood flows into white matter; this disruption may be related to morbidity and disability. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) allows quantitative study of blood flow and permeability dynamics throughout the brain. This technique involves a subject being imaged sequentially during a study visit as an intravenously administered contrast agent flows into the brain. In regions where flow is abnormal, such as white matter lesions, this allows the quantification of the BBB damage. …

When Is Informed Consent Required In Cluster Randomized Trials In Health Research?, Andrew Mcrae, Charles Weijer, Ariella Binik, Jeremy Grimshaw, Robert Boruch, Jamie Brehaut, Allan Donner, Martin P Eccles, Raphael Saginur, Angela White, Monica Taljaard

Charles Weijer

This article is part of a series of papers examining ethical issues in cluster randomized trials (CRTs) in health research. In the introductory paper in this series, we set out six areas of inquiry that must be addressed if the cluster trial is to be set on a firm ethical foundation. This paper addresses the second of the questions posed, namely, from whom, when, and how must informed consent be obtained in CRTs in health research? The ethical principle of respect for persons implies that researchers are generally obligated to obtain the informed consent of research subjects. Aspects of CRT …

Introduction: Perimenopause confers an increased risk of depression in the general population, yet bipolar disorder mood course remains unknown. Methods: Clinic visits in 519 premenopausal, 116 perimenopausal including 13 women transitioning from peri- to postmenopause, and 133 postmenopausal women with bipolar disorder who received naturalistic treatment in the multisite STEP-Bipolar Disorder study over 19.8 +/- 15.5 months were analyzed for mood state. Results: Advancing female reproductive stage was associated with significant decline in mood elevation; significant decline in euthymia; no significant difference in major depression; and symptomatic significant increase. Conclusions: Advancing stage of female reproductive life was associated with bipolar …

Tree-Based Methods And A Mixed Ridge Estimator For Analyzing Longitudinal Data With Correlated Predictors, Melissa Nicole Eliot Sep 2011

Tree-Based Methods And A Mixed Ridge Estimator For Analyzing Longitudinal Data With Correlated Predictors, Melissa Nicole Eliot

Open Access Dissertations

Due to recent advances in technology that facilitate acquisition of multi-parameter defined phenotypes, new opportunities have arisen for predicting patient outcomes based on individual specific cell subset changes. The data resulting from these trials can be a challenge to analyze, as predictors may be highly correlated with each other or related to outcome within levels of other predictor variables. As a result, applying traditional methods like simple linear models and univariate approaches such as odds ratios may be insufficient. In this dissertation, we describe potential solutions including tree-based methods, ridge regression, mixed modeling, and a new estimator called a mixed …

Spatial Evolutionary Game Theory: Deterministic Approximations, Decompositions, And Hierarchical Multi-Scale Models, Sung-Ha Hwang Sep 2011

Spatial Evolutionary Game Theory: Deterministic Approximations, Decompositions, And Hierarchical Multi-Scale Models, Sung-Ha Hwang

Open Access Dissertations

Evolutionary game theory has recently emerged as a key paradigm in various behavioral science disciplines. In particular it provides powerful tools and a conceptual framework for the analysis of the time evolution of strategic interdependence among players and its consequences, especially when the players are spatially distributed and linked in a complex social network. We develop various evolutionary game models, analyze these models using appropriate techniques, and study their applications to complex phenomena. In the second chapter, we derive integro-differential equations as deterministic approximations of the microscopic updating stochastic processes. These generalize the known mean-field ordinary differential equations and provide …

A Mathematical Growth Model Of The Viral Population In Early Hiv-1 Infections, Elena Edi Giorgi Sep 2011

A Mathematical Growth Model Of The Viral Population In Early Hiv-1 Infections, Elena Edi Giorgi

Open Access Dissertations

In this thesis we develop a mathematical model to describe HIV-1 evolution during the first stages of infection (approximately within 40-60 days since onset), when one can assume exponential growth and random accumulation of mutations under a neutral drift. We analyze the Hamming distance (HD) distribution under different models (synchronous and asynchronous) in the absence of selection and recombination. In the second part of the thesis, we introduce recombination and develop a combinatorial approach to estimate the new HD distribution. We conclude describing a T statistic to test significance differences between the HD of two genetic samples, which we derive …

Knot Contact Homology And Open Strings, Jason Frederick Mcgibbon Sep 2011

Knot Contact Homology And Open Strings, Jason Frederick Mcgibbon

Open Access Dissertations

In this thesis, we give a topological interpretation of knot contact homology, by considering intersections of a particular class of chains of open strings with the knot itself. In doing so, we provide evidence toward a differential graded algebra structure on the algebra generated by chains of open strings.

Statistical Methods For Nonlinear Dynamic Models With Measurement Error Using The Ricker Model, David Joseph Resendes Sep 2011

Statistical Methods For Nonlinear Dynamic Models With Measurement Error Using The Ricker Model, David Joseph Resendes

Open Access Dissertations

In ecological population management, years of animal counts are fit to nonlinear, dynamic models (e.g. the Ricker model) because the values of the parameters are of interest. The yearly counts are subject to measurement error, which inevitably leads to biased estimates and adversely affects inference if ignored. In the literature, often convenient distribution assumptions are imposed, readily available estimated measurement error variances are not utilized, or the measurement error is ignored entirely. In this thesis, ways to estimate the parameters of the Ricker model and perform inference while accounting for measurement error are investigated where distribution assumptions are minimized and …

The Application Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Chronic Pain Management, Jacob S. Iwaszewski Sep 2011

The Application Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Chronic Pain Management, Jacob S. Iwaszewski

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pain affects more than 50 million Americans annually, costs over 150 billion dollars each year in healthcare and legal expenses, and results in decreased work productivity and missed work days (Ballantyne, 2006; Boll, Raczynski, & Leviton, 2004; Thom, 2004). It is estimated that chronic pain negatively impacts 15% to 33% of the US population (Bokarius et al., 2008). Third-wave acceptance-based therapies, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), have demonstrated significant improvements in mental health functioning for a variety of populations (Carmody & Baer, 2008; Cusens, Duggan, Thome, & Burch, 2010). DBT, one of the primary treatment modalities for Borderline Personality …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the continuum Darcy/pipe flow model for flows in a porous matrix containing embedded conduits; such coupled flows are present in, e.g., karst aquifers. the mathematical well-posedness of the coupled problem as well as convergence rates of finite element approximation are established in the two-dimensional case. Computational results are also provided. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The Constructions Of Almost Binary Sequence Pairs And Binary Sequence Pairs With Three-Level Autocorrelation, Xiuping Peng, Chengqian Xu, Guang Li, Krishnasamy T. Arasu Sep 2011

The Constructions Of Almost Binary Sequence Pairs And Binary Sequence Pairs With Three-Level Autocorrelation, Xiuping Peng, Chengqian Xu, Guang Li, Krishnasamy T. Arasu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this letter, a new class of almost binary sequence pairs with a single zero element and three autocorrelation values is presented. The new almost binary sequence pairs are based on cyclic difference sets and difference set pairs. By applying the method to the binary sequence pairs, new binary sequence pairs with three-level autocorrelation are constructed. It is shown that new sequence pairs from our constructions are balanced or almost balanced and have optimal three-level autocorrelation when the characteristic sequences or sequence pairs of difference sets or difference set pairs are balanced or almost balanced and have optimal autocorrelations.

A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh Sep 2011

A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The beginning of modern science is marked by efforts of pioneers to understand the natural world using a quantitative approach. As Galileo wrote, "the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics". The traditional undergraduate course curriculum is heavily focused on individual disciplines like biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics rather than interdisciplinary courses. This fragmented teaching of sciences in majority of universities leave biology outside the quantitative and mathematical approaches. The landscape of biomedical science has transformed dramatically with advances in high throughput experimental approaches, which led to the huge amount of data. The best possible approach to generate …

Effects Of Animal Diet, Manure Application Rate, And Tillage On Transport Of Microorganisms From Manure-Amended Fields, Lisa M. Durso, John Gilley, David B. Marx, Bryan Woodbury

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Manure from cattle fed distillers’ grain or corn diets was applied to fields, and the fields were subjected to rainfall simulation tests. Manure was added at three rates on till and no-till plots. Correlations between microbial transport and runoff characteristics were identified. Results indicate that diet affects phage but not bacterial transport from manure-amended fields.

An Occupational-Based Experimental Study Of Collective Vs. Personal Efficacy To Encourage Sun Protective Behaviors In Head Start Preschool Teachers, Elizabeth A. Holzhauser Sep 2011

An Occupational-Based Experimental Study Of Collective Vs. Personal Efficacy To Encourage Sun Protective Behaviors In Head Start Preschool Teachers, Elizabeth A. Holzhauser

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the United States. An analysis of literature shows that skin cancer can be partially mitigated through personal behavior changes (Glanz, Buller, & Saraiya; 2007, Canadian Centre of Occupational Health and Safety [CCOHS], 2010). Currently national sun-safety educational campaigns promote sun-protective behaviors to individuals who receive exposure due to their work environment (Task Force on Community Preventive Services, 2004). Preschool teachers employed with San Bernardino County Head Start are inadvertently exposed to sunlight during mandatory recess periods posing risks to their health.

Purpose. This study evaluated two instructional …

Movelets: A Dictionary Of Movement, Jiawei Bai, Jeff Goldsmith, Brian Caffo, Thomas A. Glass, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Recent technological advances provide researchers a way of gathering real-time information on an individual’s movement through the use of wearable devices that record acceleration. In this paper, we propose a method for identifying activity types, like walking, standing, and resting, from acceleration data. Our approach decomposes movements into short components called “movelets”, and builds a reference for each activity type. Unknown activities are predicted by matching new movelets to the reference. We apply our method to data collected from a single, three-axis accelerometer and focus on activities of interest in studying physical function in elderly populations. An important technical advantage …
