Meta-Analysis As A Tool For Increasing Students' Scientific Thinking, Jennifer Fayard
Meta-Analysis As A Tool For Increasing Students' Scientific Thinking, Jennifer Fayard
Books and Monographs
Many professors are familiar with students who come into their first statistics course with a pronounced lack of interest (Rajecki, Appleby, Williams, Johnson, & Jeschke, 2005), or even an intense fear of math. Often, when statistics is paired with a research course, the context of using math to answer a question about human behavior helps them understand what those numbers mean, and if we are lucky, their fear turns to interest or even excitement. But is the reverse true--can understanding statistics help students understand how science works and how to do better research? Incorporating a meta-analysis unit in introductory statistics …
Random Sampling, Lawrence Leemis
Random Sampling, Lawrence Leemis
Arts & Sciences Book Chapters
Mathematical Statistics describes the mathematical underpinnings associated with the practice of statistics. The pre-requisite for this book is a calculus-based course in probability. Nearly 200 figures and dozens of Monte Carlo simulation experiments in R help develop the intuition behind the statistical methods. Real-world problems from a wide range of fields help the reader apply the statistical methods. Over 300 exercises are used to reinforce concepts and make this book appropriate for classroom use.
The table of contents for this book is given below.
1. Random Sampling 2. Point Estimation 3. Interval Estimation 4. Hypothesis Testing
A “How-To” Manual For Doing Standard Statistics In R, Elizabeth Newton
A “How-To” Manual For Doing Standard Statistics In R, Elizabeth Newton
OER Textbooks
This “How To….” Manual is intended to assist the new user in implementing standard statistical methods, both parametric and non-parametric, using R statistical software. Its focus is on R implementation, not statistical theory. It includes the R commands, with examples, for the following: proportion tests, t-tests, ANOVA, variance tests, several correlation measures and regression models, Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, chi-squared tests, multiple pairwise comparisons and effect sizes. Basic graphical methods are also illustrated.

A Self-Contained Course In The Mathematical Theory Of Statistics For Scientists & Engineers With An Emphasis On Predictive Regression Modeling & Financial Applications., Tim Smith
Open Access Textbooks
Preface & Acknowledgments
This textbook is designed for a higher level undergraduate, perhaps even first year graduate, course for engineering or science students who are interested to gain knowledge of using data analysis to make predictive models. While there is no statistical perquisite knowledge required to read this book, due to the fact that the study is designed for the reader to truly understand the underlying theory rather than just learn how to read computer output, it would be best read with some familiarity of elementary statistics. The book is self-contained and the only true perquisite knowledge is a solid …

Re-Describing Surface Roughness, Vincent Wagner
Re-Describing Surface Roughness, Vincent Wagner
Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase
The purpose of this project is to explore a non-traditional method of identifying and describing variance in data. The original goal was to provide a more useful description of surface roughness for use in calculating pressure loss due to pipe friction in the oil and gas industry. This approach uses simple trigonometric calculations to capture more information about the point to point variance of a given data set, as well as information related to the ratio of measured length vs total contact length. This method utilizes steps similar to the bootstrap method in statistics, however, rather than sampling a data …

Developing Methods Of Processing And Analyzing Genetic Data To Examine Tiger Salamander Population Structure, Dennis Dongmin Kim
Developing Methods Of Processing And Analyzing Genetic Data To Examine Tiger Salamander Population Structure, Dennis Dongmin Kim
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2018
Professor Heather Waye and her colleagues conducted a pilot study in 2014 to measure genetic diversity and dispersal pattern in a population of tiger salamanders in west-central Minnesota. The ultimate goal of this research was to analyze the genetic differences between tiger salamander larvae captured in breeding ponds within Pepperton Waterfowl Production Area to understand the population structure and movement patterns. They expected that ponds closer to each other would have more similar genetic information, and that genetic differences between ponds would increase with geographic distance. However, the initial analysis using standard techniques failed to uncover useful patterns in the …

Visualizing Statistical Data On United States Agriculture, Xingyao Xiao
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2018
Food is essential to life. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) plays an indispensable role in ensuring people have access to healthy food. However, the data on the USDA website is not easy to access. Users must download many files to get data about animals, crops, the weather, and so on. To make the data more accessible to the general public, I built a web-based application to help make the data easy to access, explore, and compare. My application integrates multiple datasets from USDA website to provide graphic visualizations that enable users to get the exact, specific data intervals …

Zea E-Books Collection
Structural Equation Modeling is a statistical method increasingly used in scientific studies in the fields of Social Sciences. It is currently a preferred analysis method, especially in doctoral dissertations and academic researches. However, since many universities do not include this method in the curriculum of undergraduate and graduate courses, students and scholars try to solve the problems they encounter by using various books and internet resources.
This book aims to guide the researcher who wants to use this method in a way that is free from math expressions. It teaches the steps of a research program using structured equality modeling …
