Save the soil for your sons and grandsons," or "Every farmer his own soil conservationist" might well serve as slogans for the recently-inaugurated farmers' schools organised in this State by the Soil Conservation Service. Judging by the enthusiasm shown by pupils at the first two schools, held in August last, this highly practical approach to an important subject seems destined to usher in an entirely new conception of soil conservation work as it affects the individual land-owner.

With the growing use of soil conservation practices throughout the farming areas, there has been an increasing demand for a simple levelling device that will enable farmers to take their own levels. When they have become familiar with the use of pasture furrows, contour banks and the various other mechanical erosion control measures, farmers with the aid of such an instrument would be able to make an immediate start on an erosion control programme. The instrument would also prove useful for numerous small jobs around the farm when accurate levels are required. Tests have shown the "Hose U-Tube Level" here …

A list of farmers known to be using contour practices for soil conservation, is printed at the end of this note. It will enable other interested farmers to find and see something of such methods. Now is considered an appropriate time to publish this list as many farmers will shortly be travelling through the countryside to agricultural shows and field days.

A reader of the "Journal of Agriculture" recently wrote to the Commissioner of Soil Conservation concerning the current tendency towards sinking dams on hillsides. He stated that many farmers and contractors were throwing up holding banks in such a manner that a large percentage of the water impounded was lost by seepage under the banks.

Although soil erosion caused by water action is common in our agricultural areas, effective erosion control measures, likely to pay for themselves quickly, can be applied in nearly every case. Plant cover above the soil surface, and fertile soil with good structures are the main factors which enable soils to resist erosion. Dense pasture gives the best cover and at the same time improves the fertility and structure of the soil both effectively and economically, so land management adjusted to the need and capability of soils, slopes and climate is of first importance. Research work carried out at the Kimberley Research Station on the Ord River, and on experimental plots throughout the East and West Kimberleys, indicates that the soils of the Kimberleys are quite as deficient in phosphorus as are the soils of our agricultural areas where superphosphate is essential to the growth of most crops.
This may come as a surprise to many people, for there has been a widespread tendency to assume that the Kimberleys soils, especially those of the Ord and Fitzroy valleys, are highly fertile.

Soil is a farmer's basic asset. This issue of "The Journal of Agriculture" in a new form designed to provide still better service to the farming community, is an appropriate medium through which to remind the man on the land of what the soil means to him—and to the State. The farmer's duties to himself, his family and the State are summed up in the words "soil conservation" which is merely another way of saying "wise land use."

A technique that will adequately describe the physical condition of water in the soil has long been desired by scientists. The method should include the effect of soluble materials on the osmotic pressure of the soil solution, and also the effect of surface force action between the soil and soil water.
Parker (8) demonstrated that the freezing point was reduced in the presence of finely divided material. This suggested the possibility of using the cryoscopic procedure to measure the physical condition of water soil. A survey of earthworm population under different cropping systems was made under stubble mulch farming and where the residue was plowed under. The influence of earthworms on some of the important physical and biological properties of the soil was studied. Their role in the decomposition of crop residues was also determined.

SUMMARY
Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.
Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

IN the wheat belt of Western Australian bare patches in farm paddocks are often seen. Many are bare, or almost bare, because of too much salt in the soil. The excess of salt prevents the germination of seeds, or kills living plants, because it causes the water supply for germination or growth to be cut off. This salt problem is so serious in places that single farms or groups of farms have been ruined; wheat growing on them has become unprofitable.

Potassium is one of the essential plant nutrient elements. It is used by plants in the synthesis and distribution of carbohydrates (25)2 and in the formation of proteins and oils. Potassium also seems to exert many of its effects by influencing enzymatic activity in cells.
Potassium occurs as the monovalent cation on plant cells and undoubtedly exerts important effects upon such phnomona as the permiability of the cytoplasmic membranes and hydration of protoplasma. Plants assimilate potassium either from the soil solution or directly from the exchange complex.

Chlorosis of plants from a lack of available iron is one of the most common plant nutrient problems of the calcareous soils of the west. The disease is characterized by a yellowing of the plant leaves and is accompanied, in severe cases, by a partial root death and premature defoliation (3). In addition to reducing growth, the disease greatly reduces the quality and yield of plants.
Many types of plants are affected by iron chlorosis. In Hawaii and Porto Rico rice, sugar cane and pineapple are susceptible, while in California and Arizona, citrus trees are seriously affected. In Utah apples, …

One of the principal fertility problems of calcareous soils is the lack of available phosphates. The factors which control this availability are not completely understood. One hindrance to the solution of the problems involved results from confusion of the concepts of solubility and availability. Availability is the net effect of the chemical state of a plant nutrient element and the ability of the plant to utilize the forms of the element present under the existing chemical and physical environmental conditions. Physical And Chemical Properties Of Soil Profiles Of The Burchard And Steinauer Series, Henry W. Smith, H. F. Rhoades
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The purpose of this bulletin is to report an investigation of the soils mapped as types of the Burchard and Steinauer series. Burchard soils are described as nearly mature Prairie soils, and Steinauer soils as Lithosols, by the Division of Soil Survey. The C horizons of soils of both series consist of calcareous glacial drift. A part of the conclusions drawn from the investigation of these soils is based upon observations made in the field in southeastern Nebraska, the remainder upon laboratory data for samples taken by horizons from nine profiles.
