Phytophthora Diseases Of Cutflower Crops, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Phytophthora Diseases Of Cutflower Crops, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Bulletins 4000 -
Phytophthora root rot is the most common soil borne disease causing plant death in native cut flower production. It is also a pathogen of exotic cutflower crops such as rose, lily, carnation, proteas and gerbera. The fungus, Phytophthora cinnamomi, the cause of jarrah dieback is the pathogen that first comes to mind when Phytophthora is mentioned. This has one of the widest host ranges of all Phytophthora species, particularly amongst native Australia species. P.nicotianae also has a wide host range, infecting a wide range of exotic, as well as Australian native flower crops. There are also a number of …

African Black Beetle In Vineyards, Diana Fisher, Stewart Learmonth
Bulletins 4000 -
The African black beetle, Heteronychus arator, is an important pest of horticultural crops, ornamentals and pastures in Western Australia. They also attack lawns and are commonly referred to as the black lawn beetle. This beetle was first recorded in Australia during the 1920s and originates from southern Africa where it is a major establishment pest of maize.

Control of Rhizoctonia solani infection of potato stems and daughter tubers was demonstrated by preplanting applications of tolclofos-methyl (RIZOLEX TM) to either cut or round seed tubers. Yield of tubers from cut seed treated with Rizolex was increased over that of cut seed cured before planting bu not when seed was cut and planted the same day. Crops grown from round seed treated with Rizolex yielded higher than from untreated round seed.
Surface sterilization of seed tubers with Sodium hypochlorite was effective in reducing stem damage but not in reducing daughter tuber sclerotes. This indicates …

Location: East Chapman Research Station
Inoculated and lime pelleted seed was hand sown into 3m rows at 0.25 g/m. All the medics were inoculated with WSM 540 which may have been less effective with some of the M. littoralis and M. tornata varieties. The 1988 season was very good in terms of frequency and amount of rainfall which is reflected in the high seed yields compared to 1987.

The project aims to develop, by breeding and selection, better adapted and more productive low-oestrogen cultivars of subterranean clover for a range of environments in southern Australia. The programme is a collaborative one with the University of Western Australia and consists of two phases (i) early generation selection, which involves selecting varieties satisfying primary selection criteria; and (ii) field evaluation of advanced lines, which is conducted by the Departments of Agriculture in each State and co-ordinated by the Plant Breeder. The first phase is conducted …
