Excitation Of Hydrogen Atoms By Fast Protons, Edward Ellis Fitchard Jan 1970

Excitation Of Hydrogen Atoms By Fast Protons, Edward Ellis Fitchard

Physics Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis a theoretical study is made of excitation of hydrogenic atom by charged particles such as protons or electrons. The approximation to the cross section for an inelastic scattering process is obtained under the following radically simplifying assumptions. The projectile is represented in its initial and final state by plane waves. All distortions are neglected whether they originate in an inelastic process or an elastic deflections of the charged particle by the nucleus. The perturbation of the atomic orbits between which the projectile induces transitions is neglected. Nonrelativistic hydrogenic wave functions are used for the electronic states. In …

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson May 1969

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

The directional correlation of the 346-136 Kev gamma-gamma cascade in Ta¹⁸¹ was measured using the delayed coincidence method with a source of Hf¹⁸¹ in 27 N HF. The contributions to the composite delayed coincidence spectrum of the interfering 133-482 Kev and 133-346 Kev cascades were removed by the subtraction from this spectrum of appropriate 133-482 Kev pure delayed coincidence data. The extracted 346-136 Kev coincidence data then yielded the correlation coefficients A₂₂ = 0.190±0.011 and A₄₄. = -0.025±0.024 that are consistent with the established spin sequence 5/2(E2)9/2(M1 + E2)7/2 and with an admixture of 16.2%±1. 2% E2 radiation in the …

Nuclear Spin, Hyperfine-Structure Separation, And Nuclear Magnetic Moment Of 18-Min Rb88, Paul A. Vanden Bout, Antoni Dymanus, Vernon J. Ehlers, Michael H. Prior Dec 1968

Nuclear Spin, Hyperfine-Structure Separation, And Nuclear Magnetic Moment Of 18-Min Rb88, Paul A. Vanden Bout, Antoni Dymanus, Vernon J. Ehlers, Michael H. Prior

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We have used the atomic-beam magnetic-resonance technique to measure the nuclear spin and the hyperfine-structure separation of 18-min Rb88 in the S122 electronic ground state. These results, combined with the Fermi-Segrè formula, yield the nuclear magnetic moment. Our results are: I=2, Δν=±1186.084(18) MHz, μI(uncorr)=±0.506(5) nm, μI(corr)=±0.508(5) nm. Present nuclear theory favors assignment of the negative sign to the value of the moment.

A Matrix Formulation Of The Least-Squares Method And Its Application To Nuclear Decay Schemes, Otto Harry Otteson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many people call physics an ''exact science". This may be true depending on our definition of exact. Most dictionaries include as a definition of exact the words "strictly accurate". The average man thinks of an "exact science" as one which yields "strictly accurate'' results. Physics then is exact only to a degree.
