Groundwater Nutrient Loading In Biscayne Bay, Biscayne National Park, Florida, Michael James Byrne

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research documents submarine groundwater discharge along the shore of Biscayne Bay. Seepage meters and groundwater monitoring wells, between the outlets of Mowry and Military Canals, were used to quantify groundwater discharge, nutrient concentration and loading. Discharge is greatest 185 m offshore and then decreases to zero 400 m offshore. Total discharge is 20.6 m3 m-1 d-1. The location of discharge is controlled by distance from shore and sediment characteristics. Generally, nutrient concentrations were highest in groundwater flowing through seepage meters, followed in decreasing order; shallow groundwater, deep groundwater and surface water. The ratios of Mowry …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the Exxon Valdez accident in 1987, renewed interest has come forth to better understand and predict the fate and transport of crude oil lost to marine environments. The short-term fate of an Arabian Crude oil was simulated in laboratory experiments using artificial seawater. Intra-Regional Tourism And Challenges Facing Hong Kong's Hotel Industry, J.S. Perry Hobson, Goldwyn Ko

Hospitality Review

Asia is experiencing a rapid growth in intra-Asian tourism, and is finding that the spending priorities of these new visitor markets is quite different from traditional markets. Not only have Hong Kong's markets changed, but the economic operational environment is becoming increasingly difficult as a result of the change in sovereignty in 1997, increasing land prices, and new regulations. The current structure of the hotel industry is out of balance with the demands of these new markets. Hong Kong now needs to consider some intervention in the hotel industry to further encourage the development of properties in this mid-market.

The need for a high quality tourism database is well known. For example, planners and managers need high quality data for budgeting, forecasting, planning marketing and advertising strategies, and staffing. Thus the concepts of quality and need are intertwined to pose a problem to the tourism professional, be they private sector or public sector employees. FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ozone readings which exceeded the National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 120 ppbv were recorded in Miami, Florida during 1978 and 1980. Similar elevated concentrations of ozone extended across upper Florida and into the Southeastern portion of the United States. It is concluded that tropospheric transport of ozone into the Miami area occurs. This conclusion is supported by lead analyses of atmospheric samples taken in Miami and by isentropic trajectories. Six case studies are presented. In all cases transport of ozone into Florida appears to occur. In only four of the cases does this result in elevated ozone levels in …
