Recurrent and feedforward artificial neural networks are developed as wavefront reconstructors. The recurrent neural network studied is the Hopfield neural network and the feedforward neural network studied is the single layer perceptron artificial neural network. The recurrent artificial neural network input features are the wavefront sensor slope outputs and neighboring actuator feedback commands. The feedforward artificial neural network input features are just the wavefront sensor slope outputs. Both artificial neural networks use their inputs to calculate deformable mirror actuator commands. The effects of training are examined.

This thesis documents the design, fabrication, and testing of a lightweight, planar microwave lens. The lens consists of two planar arrays of lightweight printed circuit antennas interconnected by microstrip lines whose length varies as a function of position on the lens. Microwave energy is coupled from one face of the lens to the other by means of a slot etched in the ground plane. At 8.0 GHz the lens is ten wavelengths across, is less than 1/8 inch thick, and weighs less than 4 pounds. The lens can scan a beam over a +/- 30 degree region in both the …

Cathodoluminescence in Zn doped GaAs and ZnSe, the materials of interest for electron-beam controlled semiconductor switches, has been investigated. A new diagnostic technique, using telescopic setup of lenses, was developed to study the spatially resolved cathodoluminescence. The setup eliminated the light, other than rays from the sample, parallel to the optical axis, resulting in an enhanced spatial resolution. At high e-beam energies, light was detected, from the Zn layer region in the GaAs. It is proposed to be due to the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs, created by the e-beam. For the polycrystalline ZnSe no light emission was detected. This …

This paper explores the use of Simulated Annealing as an optimization technique for the problem Composite Material Stock Cutting. The shapes are not constrained to be convex polygons or even regular shapes. However, due to the composite nature of the material, the orientation of the shapes on the stock is restricted. For placements of various shapes, we show how to determine a cost function, annealing parameters, and performance.

A sensor having an interdigitated gate electrode field effect transistor (IGEFET) coupled to an electron beam evaporated copper phthalocyanine thin film is used to selectively detect parts-per-billion concentration levels of atmosphere contaminants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and diisopropyl methylphosphonate (DIMP). The sensor is excited with a voltage pulse, and its time- and frequency-domain response are examined. The envelopes of the magnitude of the normalized difference frequency spectrums reveal features which unambiguously distinguish the NO2 and DIMP exposures.

The concepts of band theory for electrons can be employed to describe the behavior of electromagnetic waves propagating in two-dimensional, periodic dielectric structures. These two-dimensional, periodic structures can produce photonic band gaps in which the spontaneous emission by atoms embedded in the structure is prohibited and as a result the performance of many semiconductor devices can be enhanced. The calculations are based on finding the eigenvalues of the algebraic equation for the frequencies of electromagnetic waves moving in a square lattice composed of square dielectric rods with different dielectric constants.

The application of Dr. Genichi Taguchi's approach for design optimization, called Robust Design, to the design of human-computer interface software is investigated. The Taguchi Method is used to select a near optimum set of interface design alternatives to improve user acceptance of the resulting interface software product with minimum sensitivity to uncontrollable noise caused by human behavioral characteristics.
Design alternatives for interaction with personal micro-computers are identified. Several important and representative alternatives are chosen as design parameters for the Taguchi matrix experiment. Real-time holographic recording using an optical heterodyne scanning technique was proposed by Poon in 1985. The first part of this dissertation provides a detailed theoretical treatment of the technique, based on a Gaussian beam analysis. Topics to be addressed include the derivations of the optical transfer function (OTF) and impulse response of the scanning holographic recording system, reconstructed image resolution and magnification, methods of carrier frequency hologram generation and experimental verification of the recording technique based on careful measurements of a hologram corresponding to a simple transmissive slit. This thesis investigates a digital gas filter correlation radiometer called the Tropospheric Radiometer for Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Research (TRACER), which will be used to remotely measure carbon monoxide at three levels in the troposphere. The nadir-viewing radiometer measures the differential absorption of radiation through the atmosphere at 4.67@m and 2.33pm wavelengths. This thesis develops an analytical model of the TRACER measurement process to evaluate the effect of varying certain system parameters on the measurement. Erasable optical memory systems with a high storage density and a large data transfer rate are required for many real time data acquisition systems such as those placed aboard NASA's space born platforms. A new concept for erasable optical memory involving stimulated electronic transitions (SET) will meet these requirements. The SET concept useful in erasable optical storage systems was demonstrated in MgS and SrS doped with Eu and Sm. The optical properties of these materials were studied. The Mössbauer effect has been used to study the microscopic magnetic properties of the cubic microwave ferrite (Zn0.41Ni0.59)Fe2O4 at 300 K. The magnetically split spectrum is broad and unresolved due to the overlap of the hyperfine magnetic fields at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites. This is caused by a distribution of magnetic fields at each site. The distribution is especially large and asymmetric at the octahedral site and is due to the fact that the iron atoms at this site are influenced by the presence of both iron and zinc at the tetrahedral …

The magnetic and crystalline properties of a plasma‐sprayed coating of the microwave absorbing zinc‐nickel ferrite, (Zn0.41Ni0.59 )Fe2O4 have been studied at 300 K using the Mössbauer effect and x‐ray diffraction (XRD). Both techniques indicate that the plasma‐sprayed material separated into two phases. The first is a nickel‐rich phase with magnetic fields of 47.5 and 44.5 T at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, respectively. The second is a zinc‐rich phase, zinc meta‐ferrite, having a small magnetic field of 4.2 T. The quadrupole splitting of this second phase is ΔE=0.34 mm s−1, …

MCNP version 3B was modified to incorporate a continuously variable density atmosphere. This was accomplished by representing the variation of air density as a function of altitude with a series of continuous piecewise exponential curves up to a maximum altitude of 1000 km. User-written subroutines and functions were written which incorporated these piecewise functions. These subroutines and functions were subsequently incorporated into a production version of MCNP. Several MCNP subroutines and files were modified in support of these modifications. The phenomenon of electric field induced (EFI) emission is examined in several diatomic and polyatomic molecules. The possibility of using this phenomenon as a diagnostic tool to measure, nonintrusively, the strength and direction of local electric fields in plasmas is discussed. An estimate of the EFI signal emitted in a typical application plasma is given. This yields a lower bound on the detector sensitivity necessary to exploit EFI emission in practical applications. It is concluded that, at present, the EFI signal could be measured by some very sensitive infrared detection schemes available. Current progress in infrared detector technology, if maintained, …

The purpose of this thesis was to implement the Modified Monte Carlo technique using Importance Sampling on the Block Oriented System Simulator (BOSS). Computer simulation techniques of communications systems were reviewed. Next, conventional Monte Carlo techniques and Modified Monte Carlo techniques using Importance Sampling were reviewed. Models of Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) systems using both Monte Carlo techniques were implemented and simulated. Reasons for the model using Importance Sampling not working correctly are postulated. The purpose of this thesis was to design and develop an expert system shell in Ada, and to evaluate the shell's execution and size performance to determine its suitability for real-time operation on the MIL-STD-1750A embedded flight processor. The expert system shell uses the CLIPS/Ada inference engine, a forward-chaining Ada implementation of Rete. The expert system shell design is presented along with an overview of the target environment--the MIL-STD-1750A VHSIC Avionic Modular Processor (VAMP) running under the Ada Avionics Real-Time Software (AARTS) Operating System. The goal of this research was to investigate deep levels in different types of GaAs, a material for high power optically controlled bulk semiconductor switches. For low resistivity semiconductors, such as silicon doped GaAs material (p =0.054 Ω cm), deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) was used to characterize deep levels. Three deep levels (EL6, EL3, and EL2) have been detected in this material. For high resistivity semiconductors (p > 104 Ω cm), difficulty of electrical carrier injection and of making a junction does not permit the use of DLTS technique. The goal of this thesis is to develop an artificial neural approach toward addressing the intractability involved with the decomposition problem. The search for the lattice of substitution property (s. p.) partitions essential to decompositions is cast into the framework of constraint satisfaction. An artificial neural network is developed to provide solutions by performing optimization of a mathematically derived objective function over the problem space. The issue of transitivity is verified to belong to a class of problems beyond the scope of solvability for conventional quadratic-order constraint satisfaction neural networks. A computer-based vowel articulation training aid has been developed. A "continuous" acoustic-phonetic transformation is performed to map speech parameters to a lower dimensionality display space. There are two possible approaches to this transformation problem. The transformation could be either linear or a combination nonlinear/linear. The nonlinear transformation is performed using a multi-layered feedforward neural network with linear output layers. Speech parameters are extracted either from an analog filter bank arrangement (band energies) or by a digital signal processing procedure (Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients). Hidden Markov models (HMM's) have achieved considerable success for isolated-word speaker-independent automatic speech recognition. However, the performance of an HMM algorithm is limited by its inability to discriminate between similar sounding words. The problem arises because all differences between speech patterns are treated as equally important. Thus the algorithm is particularly susceptible to confusions caused by phonetically-irrelevant differences. This thesis presents two types of preprocessing schemes as candidates for improving HMM performance. The aim is to maximize the differences between phonologically-distinct speech sounds while minimizing the effect of variations in phonologically-equivalent speech sounds. After examining and analyzing the experience with coke ovens, the authors conclude that attempts to force technology beyond its demonstrated competence can be both expensive and ineffective in controlling hazards. A model for an abnormal glow discharge, including a self‐consistent analysis of the cathode fall, was developed. It combines microscopic particle simulation by means of Monte Carlo methods with a fluid model of the gas discharge. The model allows calculations of the steady‐state electrical field distribution, the charged‐particle densities, and the current densities along the axis of the discharge. The model was used to simulate a glow discharge in 80% He and 20% SF6 at a pressure of 8 Torr with a current density of 1 A/cm2. The computed discharge voltage agrees well with measured values. The …

A review is presented which covers the basic theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with regard to angular momentum, magnetic moments, and the classical mechanical description of the NMR experiment. Longitudinal (T,) and Transverse (T2) relaxation times are defined as well as the basic pulse sequences used for their measurement. In particular, the 180°-t-90° and the Hahn Spin Echo pulse sequences are described in detail. The four-detector photopolarimeter (FDP) is an arrangement of four photodetectors for measuring the state of polarization of light. The output current vector I of the FDP is related to the input Stokes vector S by I = AS, where A is the instrument matrix. The rows of A can be viewed as projection operators that determine the output currents of the detectors. This leads to the recognition of four special totally polarized input states, each of which maximizes the output of one detector. The associated four orthogonal states produce minimum signals. Under certain conditions and with good angular resolution, this mode conversion can be attributed to the presence of magnetic fluctuations even though the level of these fluctuations is much lower than that of density fluctuations. Some nonideal effects such as mode polarization mismatch at the plasma edge are also discussed.
