Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet
Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet
CSE Conference and Workshop Papers
Data classification is usually based on measurements recorded at the same time. This paper considers temporal data classification where the input is a temporal database that describes measurements over a period of time in history while the predicted class is expected to occur in the future. We describe a new temporal classification method that improves the accuracy of standard classification methods. The benefits of the method are tested on weather forecasting using the meteorological database from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The use of hyperspectral imaging is a fast growing field with many applications in the civilian, commercial and military sectors. Hyperspectral images are typically composed of many spectral bands in the visible and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and have the potential to deliver a great deal of information about a remotely sensed scene. One area of interest regarding hyperspectral images is anomaly detection, or the ability to find spectral outliers within a complex background in a scene with no a priori information about the scene or its specific contents. Anomaly detectors typically operate by creating a statistical background …

The advanced electric power grid is a cyber-physical system comprised of physical components, such as transmission lines and generators, and a network of embedded systems deployed for their cyber control. The objective of this paper is to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the reliability of this cyber-physical system. The original contribution of the approach lies in the scope of failures analyzed, which crosses the cyber-physical boundary by investigating physical manifestations of failures in cyber control. As an example of power electronics deployed to enhance and control the operation of the grid, we study Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, which are …

On The Issue Of Decoupled Decoding Of Codes Derived From Quaternion Orthogonal Designs, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams
Sarah Spence Adams
Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been previously introduced as a basis for orthogonal space-time polarization block codes (OSTPBCs). This note will serve to correct statements concerning the optimality of a decoupled maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding algorithm. It will be shown that when compared to coupled decoding, the decoupled decoding is only optimal in certain cases. This raises several open problems concerning the decoding of OSTPBCs.

A Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell With Fecopc_2-Catalysed Cathode, Jin-Fu Ma, Yan Liu, Jun-Hua Lai, Yong-Ning Liu
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this paper,a membraneless direct borohydride fuel cell was investigated. Cyclic voltammograms of FeCoPc2-modified glassy carbon electrode in the alkaline solution show that FeCoPc2 was active for oxygen reduction reaction. In addition, the steady-state polarization curve tests indicate that FeCoPc2 had better activity than FePc,CoPc or FePc+CoPc,which is due to its conjugated effect and synergistic effect of Fe and Co. Finally,a maximum power density of 110 mW/cm2 was attained, and the 25-day life test shows that the direct borohydride fuel cell had a good stability.

Ellipsometric Study On Colored Electroplating Of Cuprous Oxide On Ni Substrate, Xue-Song Feng, Jing-Lei Lei, Ai-Xiang Chen, Wan-Shan Yin, Ling-Jie Li, Sha Zheng, Hui Zhao, Shao-Yan Pan
Journal of Electrochemistry
The colored Cu2O coating was electroplated on Ni substrate to meet the decorative requirements. Results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate the coating consisting of Cu2O. Images of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) show that the Cu2O coating is smooth and uniform, and covers the Ni substrate wholly. Ellipsomtric measurements for Cu2O coatings with various electroplating time were carried out. Using a 4-layer model of "Air-Cu2O layer-interphase-Ni" ,the interphase was modeled with the graded effective medium approximation (EMA),the ellipsomtric data were deconvoluted and the Cu2O coatings thickness of Cu2O was obtained. Results reveal that the Cu2O coating …

Silicon Silver Composite Materials For Li-Ion Batteries, Lian-Bang Wang, Xiao-Bo Dai, Xin-Yan Zhu, Xin-Biao Mao, Chun-An Ma
Journal of Electrochemistry
Si-Ag composite materials were prepared by mechanical alloying method. The morphology and composition of SiAg composites were investigated by SEM and XRD. The electrochemical properties of the composites were determined by charge-discharge tests and cyclic voltammetry. The composite composed of Si∶Ag with an atomic ratio of 1∶1 (sample 1#) showed good cyclic stability and charge-discharge reversibility. The reversible capacity of the composite (sample 1#) was remained over 300 mAh·g-1 after 50 cycles. Experimental results showed that controlling the potential range of charge-discharge processes could enhance the cyclic performance of alloy materials.

Electrochemical Reduction Of Nitrobenzene In Different Ionic Liquids, Jun-Li Fan, Wei-Lin Ye, Rong Wang, Li-Qun Xu, Xia-Qin Wu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene at glassy carbon electrode in different ionic liquids, such as N-methylimidazolium-p-toluene sulfonic acid ([Mim][PhSO3]) and ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Bmim][PF6]) have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Experimental results showed that only a cathodic current peak was observed in [Mim][PhSO3],which is a diffusional controlled irreversible reaction. And two pairs of current peaks were obtained in [Bmim][PF6] in the same potential range, indicating showed that the reduction products of nitrobenzene were different in different ionic liquids.

In this paper, we present a scene-based nouniformity correction (NUC) method using a modified adaptive least mean square (LMS) algorithm with a novel gating operation on the updates. The gating is designed to significantly reduce ghosting artifacts produced by many scene-based NUC algorithms by halting updates when temporal variation is lacking. We define the algorithm and present a number of experimental results to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in comparison to several previously published methods including other LMS and constant statistics based methods. The experimental results include simulated imagery and a real infrared image sequence. We show that …

We discuss the design of an acousto-optic cell based free space optical communication link where the data beam is made secure through chaos encryption. Using external signal modulation of the diffracted light from a hybrid acousto-optic cell chaos (or directly via incorporation in the sound-cell driver's bias voltage) encryption of data is possible. We have shown numerically that decryption of the encoded data is possible by using an identical acousto-optic system in the receiver.

This presentation sets out the very basics of ‘sustainability’, although a definition of sustainability is not attempted. Some of the very basics are the context in which the Earth and humankind exist in space and time, the Earth’s climate, the Earth’s population and humankind’s options and choices. The author advocates keeping an open mind on all available options, including the use of oil, gas, coal, tar sands, carbon capture and sequestration, nuclear power etc., as well as the technologies that are more widely considered ‘green’. The author also argues that, in addressing the challenges that humankind faces, globally concerted effort …

This paper presents a novel radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based smart freezer using a new inventory-management scheme for extremely low temperature environments. The proposed solution utilizes backpressure inventory control, systematic selection of antenna configuration, and antenna power control. The proposed distributed-inventory-control (DIC) scheme dictates the amount of items transferred through the supply chain. when a high item visibility is ensured, the control scheme maintains the desired level of inventory at each supply-chain echelon. The performance of the DIC scheme is guaranteed using a Lyapunov-based analysis. The proposed RFID antenna-configuration design methodology coupled with locally asymptotically stable distributed power control ensures a 99% …

Developing Large-Scale Bayesian Networks By Composition: Fault Diagnosis Of Electrical Power Systems In Aircraft And Spacecraft, Ole J. Mengshoel, Scott Poll, Tolga Kurtoglu
Ole J Mengshoel
In this paper, we investigate the use of Bayesian networks to construct large-scale diagnostic systems. In particular, we consider the development of large-scale Bayesian networks by composition. This compositional approach reflects how (often redundant) subsystems are architected to form systems such as electrical power systems. We develop high-level specifiations, Bayesian networks, clique trees, and arithmetic circuits representing 24 different electrical power systems. The largest among these 24 Bayesian networks contains over 1,000 random variables. Another BN represents the real-world electrical power system ADAPT, which is representative of electrical power systems deployed in aerospace vehicles. In addition to demonstrating the scalability …

Automated diagnosis and reconfiguration are important computational techniques that aim to minimize human intervention in autonomous systems. In this paper, we develop novel techniques and models in the context of diagnosis and reconfiguration reasoning using causal Bayesian networks (BNs). We take as starting point a successful diagnostic approach, using a static BN developed for a real-world electrical power system. We discuss in this paper the extension of this diagnostic approach along two dimensions, namely: (i) from a static BN to a dynamic BN; and (ii) from a diagnostic task to a reconfiguration task.
More specifically, we discuss the auto-generation of …

Characterization Of An N2 Flowing Microwave Post-Discharge By Oes Spectroscopy And Determination Of Absolute Ground-State Nitrogen Atom Densities By Talif, Et. Es-Sebbar, Y. Benilan, A. Jolly, M-C. Gazeau
Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar
A flowing microwave post-discharge source sustained at 2.45 GHz in pure nitrogen has been investigated by optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) spectroscopy. Variations of the optical emission along the post-discharge (near, pink and late afterglow) have been studied and the gas temperature has been determined. TALIF spectroscopy has been used in the late afterglow to determine the absolute ground-state nitrogen atomic densities using krypton as a reference gas. Measurements show that the microwave flowing post-discharge is an efficient source of N (4S) atoms in late afterglow. In our experimental conditions, the maximum N (4S) density …

As utility companies develop and incorporate new technologies, such as moving to utility Internet technology based architecture and standard; it is crucial that we do so with history in mind. We know that traditional utility protection and control systems were not designed with security in their top priorities. This presents a danger in an environment where near real-time responses are required to ensure safe operations. As a consequence, system security becomes a burden to the system rather than necessary protection. Unfortunately, technology implementation is not the only concern. The number of utility privately-owned companies has multiplied as the market has …

Analytical expressions for the probability density function of block-wise signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio for both synchronous and asynchronous direct-sequence spread spectrum code-division multiple access systems are developed, for equal average energy signals on the Gaussian and Rayleigh flat fading channels. Using the standard Gaussian approximation for multi-user interference, accurate density approximations are obtained, which agree very well with computer simulation results.
