Analysis Of Multimode Low-Probability-Of-Intercept (Lpi) Communications With Atmospheric Effects, Ala Ghordlo Dec 1996

Analysis Of Multimode Low-Probability-Of-Intercept (Lpi) Communications With Atmospheric Effects, Ala Ghordlo

Theses and Dissertations

This research expanded Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) communications analysis in two areas. First, multimode communication was included to account for ground to ground and air to ground links in addition to the standard air to air links traditionally used in LPI analysis. The propagation equations for the three modes of interest were derived and included in LPI analytic models in the form of a mode quality factor to account for multimode LPI scenarios. This new quality factor was used in studying several communication and interception link combinations. Variations due to differences between the communication and interception modes were presented …

Performance Analysis Of A Hartman Wavefront Sensor Used For Sensing Atmospheric Turbulence Statistics, Toby D. Reeves Dec 1996

Performance Analysis Of A Hartman Wavefront Sensor Used For Sensing Atmospheric Turbulence Statistics, Toby D. Reeves

Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric turbulence parameters, such as Fried's coherence diameter, the outer scale of turbulence, and the turbulence power law, are related to the wavefront slope structure function (SSF). The SSF is defined as the second moment of the wavefront slope difference as a function of both time and position. Knowledge of the SSF allows turbulence parameters to be estimated. Hartmann wavefront sensor (H-WFS) slope measurements composed of both signal and noise, allow the SSF to be estimated by computing a mean square difference of H-WFS slope measurements. The quality of the SSF estimate is quantified by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of …

Development Of Object-Based Teleoperator Control For Unstructured Applications, Hyunki Cho Dec 1996

Development Of Object-Based Teleoperator Control For Unstructured Applications, Hyunki Cho

Theses and Dissertations

For multi-fingered end effectors in unstructured applications, the main issues are control in the presence of uncertainties and providing grasp stability and object manipulability. The suggested concept in this thesis is object based teleoperator control which provides an intuitive way to control the robot in terms of the grasped object and reduces the operator's conceptual constraints. The general control law is developed using a hierarchical control structure, i.e., human interface I gross motion control level in teleoperation control and fine motion control/object grasp stability in autonomous control. The gross motion control is required to provide the position/orientation of the Super …

Surface Modifications Of Carbon Materials Used As Anode Of Lithium Ion Battery Ⅰ.Influences Of Oxidation And Reduction Pretreatment On Anode Performance, Shuhua Ma, Hanju Guo, Ji Li, Hongze Liang, Xiabin Jing, Fosong Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influences of the trace oxygen containing functional groups on surface of carbon material on cell performance of carbon anode for lithium ion batteries were studied by means of the pretreament in various oxidant/reductant systems. The results showed that the rich oxygen containing functional groups impaired the cell performance of carbon material anode, and the reduction of these groups in quantity and oxidation degree can increase charge/discharge capacity and improve first charge/discharge efficiency. The reason was also discussed in the light of effects of surface organic groups on decomposition reactivity of electrolyte and formation process of surface passivating film.

The Current Distribution On The Anode Surface Of The Seale Oval Tubular Lead Acid Battery, Renao Gu, Jianlin Yao, Zhengfa Deng, Ru Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The current distribution on anode surface of sealed lead acid batter under different discharge current and degree was studied by chemical analytical method for the first time. We can conclude that the current distribution is not even. The current density on the edge of the electrode surface and the electrode terminal are bigger than other areas, that is, there are edge effect and terminal effect, and these effect are more obvious when the discharge current is 100 A and degree is 100%.

Method and apparatus are provided for NLO switching by first providing a phase-matched SHG grating which outputs a reinforced SHG beam only when two input beams of frequency (ω) are present in two modes of such wg. The so encoded NLO switch is operated by directing at least two input pulsed laser beams of frequency (ω) into the two modes of the wg to generate a reinforced pulsed output SHG beam and output same from the wg in an NLO switching process. The two input beams desirably have a separate pulse train and the spatial and temporal overlap of the …

An Empirical Comparison Of Area-Universal And Other Parallel Computing Networks, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan Sep 1996

An Empirical Comparison Of Area-Universal And Other Parallel Computing Networks, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper provides empirical comparison of the communication capabilities of two area-universal networks, the fat-tree and the fat-pyramid, to the popular mesh and hypercube networks for parallel computation. While area-universal networks have been proven capable of simulating, with modest slowdown, any computation of any other network of comparable area, prior work has generally left open the question of how area-universal networks compare to other networks in practice. Comparisons are performed using techniques of throughput and latency analysis that have previously been applied to k-ary n-cube networks and using various existing models to equate the hardware cost of the networks being …

A Study On Electrochemical Oxidation Of Reduced Nicotinamide Coenzyme Nadh In Organic Media, Fangzu Yang, Wuhuihuang Wuhuihuang, Xushukai Xushukai, Zhoushsomin Zhoushsomin

Journal of Electrochemistry

The behaviour of electrochemical oxidation of the reduced nicotinamide coenzyme NADH on glassy carbon was studied and some kinetic parameters were measured by means of voltammometry in the N-dimethylformamide(DMF)and 1,4-dioxane media respectively. The eletrochemical oxidation of NADH shows completely irriversable both in the two solvents, and the diagnostic experiments support that the process involves a fast chemical step. The oxidation rate and the diffusion coefficient of N ADH in DMP are smaller than those in 1,4-dioxane,but the response current is more stable in DMF. The experimental results are discussed by solvent effects.

Single-Layer Channel Routing And Placement With Single-Sided Nets, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih Aug 1996

Single-Layer Channel Routing And Placement With Single-Sided Nets, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper considers the optimal offset, feasible offset, and optimal placement problems for a more general form of single-layer VLSI channel routing than has usually been considered in the past. Most prior works require that every net has exactly one terminal on each side of the channel. As long as only one side of the channel contains multiple terminals of the same net, we provide linear-time solutions to all three problems. Such results are implausible if the placement of terminals is entirely unrestricted; in fact, the size of the output for the feasible offset problem may be Ω(n^2). The linear-time …

Investigation Of Radio Wave Propagation In The Martian Ionosphere Utilizing Hf Sounding Techniques, Robert J. Yowell Jun 1996

Investigation Of Radio Wave Propagation In The Martian Ionosphere Utilizing Hf Sounding Techniques, Robert J. Yowell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a preliminary design of an ionospheric sounder to be carried aboard one or more of NASA's Mars Surveyor landers. Past Russian and American probes have indicated the existence of an ionosphere, but none of these missions remotely sensed this atmospheric layer from the surface. The rationale for utilizing a surface-based Martian ionospheric sounder is discussed. Based on NASA's choice of launch vehicle and power source, a low-weight, low-powered Chirp sounder using a horizontally-polarized dipole antenna is recommended for the sounder experiment. The sounder experiment should be conducted for at least one Martian year, in order to investigate …

An Electroabsorption Study Of Porous Silicon, Melanie Fewings Apr 1996

An Electroabsorption Study Of Porous Silicon, Melanie Fewings

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Bulk silicon is an indirect band gap material. When carriers are injected into bulk silicon, electron-hole recombination takes place thermally via phonon exchange, and not by emission of photons. Porous silicon, on the other hand, is a fairly efficient emitter of light in the visible region. Much research is currently under way to find out what makes porous silicon able to emit light. One main theory suggests that the energy bands of bulk silicon may be "squeezed" by being quantum confined, and porous silicon is just an array of quantum silicon wires. Another possibility is that defects in the huge …

Gamma-Ray Optical Studies Of ⁷³Ge And ⁵⁷Fe, Walter Carlton Mcdermott Iii Apr 1996

Gamma-Ray Optical Studies Of ⁷³Ge And ⁵⁷Fe, Walter Carlton Mcdermott Iii

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The research described herein is among the first attempts to test one of the more popular theories for development of a gamma-ray laser. This work is a "marriage" between the Borrmann effect, which is a consequence of the dynamical theory of x-ray diffraction, and time-filtering which comes from time-domain Mossbauer spectroscopy.

Our experiments involved the search for a nuclear Borrmann effect and the subsequent time-filtering effect using 57Fe and 73Ge. In both cases, no nuclear Borrmann effect was observed; however, the methodology and criteria necessary for such an observation with any isotope were documented. The procedures necessary for …

Generalized Hidden Filter Markov Models Applied To Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi Mar 1996

Generalized Hidden Filter Markov Models Applied To Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi

Theses and Dissertations

Classification of time series has wide Air Force, DoD and commercial interest, from automatic target recognition systems on munitions to recognition of speakers in diverse environments. The ability to effectively model the temporal information contained in a sequence is of paramount importance. Toward this goal, this research develops theoretical extensions to a class of stochastic models and demonstrates their effectiveness on the problem of text-independent (language constrained) speaker recognition. Specifically within the hidden Markov model architecture, additional constraints are implemented which better incorporate observation correlations and context, where standard approaches fail. Two methods of modeling correlations are developed, and their …

Translation Of 'Profiles In Faith', Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Sarat Chandra Chatterjee (1876-1938) may be considered one of the three most significant figures of the literary component of the Bengal Renaissance, the other two being Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (1838-1894) and Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). As much as Bankim Chandra is identified with the new age in the Bengali novel, and the development of serious vernacular journalism, and Rabindranath with modern/classical movements in Bengali poetry and music, along with novel ideas in methods of education and teaching, Sarat Chandra, as a novelist and storyteller, perfected the art of narration and critical analyses of a variety of contemporaneous social and political issues, …
