Inorganic Electrocatalysts For Innovative Water Splitting And Organic Upgrading, Nan Jiang Dec 2018

Inorganic Electrocatalysts For Innovative Water Splitting And Organic Upgrading, Nan Jiang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The booming worldwide demand for energy and the increasing concerns about global warming due to fossil fuel consumption have urged the development of techniques for storing and converting renewable and clean energy resources. Electrocatlytic or photoelectrocatalytic water splitting to generate green energy carrier H2 with sustainable energy input, like solar, has been regarded as an attractive strategy for carbon-neutral energy needs. However, the sluggish kinetics for both half reactions (HER and OER), high overpotentials and thermodynamic requirements, and H2 and O2 gas crossover have been regarded as the major challenges, which limit its widespread application.

Quantum Mechanical Studies Of N-H···N Hydrogen Bonding In Acetamide Derivatives And Amino Acids, Sandra J. Lundell Dec 2018

Quantum Mechanical Studies Of N-H···N Hydrogen Bonding In Acetamide Derivatives And Amino Acids, Sandra J. Lundell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Proteins are made of vast chains of amino acids that twist and fold into intricate designs. These structures are held in place by networks of noncovalent interactions. One of these, the hydrogen bond, forms bridges between adjacent pieces of the protein chain and is one of the most important contributors to the shape and stability of proteins. Hydrogen bonds come in all shapes and sizes and a full understanding of these not only aids in our understanding of proteins in general but can bridge the gap to finding cures to many protein-related diseases, such as sickle-cell anemia. The primary aim …

Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Interactions Of Amino Acids Side Chains With The Guanine Radical Cation., Edward Acheampong Dec 2018

Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Interactions Of Amino Acids Side Chains With The Guanine Radical Cation., Edward Acheampong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Guanine is generally accepted as the most easily oxidized DNA base when cells are subjected to ionizing radiation, photoionization or photosensitization. At pH 7, the midpoint reduction potential is on the order of 0.2 – 0.3 V higher than those of the radicals of e.g. tyrosine, tryptophan cysteine and histidine, so that the radical “repair” (or at least, a thermodynamically favorable reaction) involving these amino acids is feasible. Computational quantum studies have been done on tyrosine, tryptophan, cysteine and histidine side chains as they appear in histones. Density functional theory was employed using B3LYP/6-31G+ (d, p) basis set to study …

Relative Permittivity As A Function Of Co-Solvent And Impedance Spectroscopy For Quantifying Anions In Solution, Yahya Sami Alseiha Dec 2018

Relative Permittivity As A Function Of Co-Solvent And Impedance Spectroscopy For Quantifying Anions In Solution, Yahya Sami Alseiha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work measured relative permittivity from 15.0 to 55.0 °C of aqueous solutions containing acetone or tetrahydrofuran using a BI 870 dielectric meter. A cubic polynomial fit resulted in coefficients for calculating permittivity as a function of temperature and mole fraction. Literature values for other co-solvent system resulted in similar polynomial coefficients. Using BI 870, permittivity measurements of ionic solutions were not possible because of high conductivity. A simple method using impedance spectroscopy measured these solutions. Impedance decreases with increasing temperature and decreases with increasing ionic strength. Due to the temperature dependence of impedance, all measurements were at 25.0 °C. …

A New Generation Of Functional Polyisobutylenes For Advanced Applications, Corey M. Parada

Dissertations

Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a fully saturated, aliphatic polymer of high commercial importance due to its superior gas barrier properties and high chemical/oxidative stability. One commercial end-use for PIB is in insulated glass windows (IGU), where it acts as a gas/moisture barrier and sealant. Under certain adverse conditions, catastrophic failure of the PIB sealant may result in aesthetic and functional failure of the IGU, which necessitates replacement of the unit. Thus, there exists a need to improve current generations of thermoplastic PIB sealants to be able to withstand the harsh environments found in current real-world applications.

In the first project, we …

High-Throughput Assessment Of A Novel, Thiol-Acrylate Hydrogel For Tumor Spheroid Synthesis In A Microfluidic Device, Nathan Daniel Kersker

LSU Master's Theses

The extracellular environment plays an important role in regulating cell behavior. The mechanical, structural, and compositional properties of the extracellular matrix can determine the fate of the growing cells. Standard two-dimensional culturing in a flask fails to represent a native cellular environment. To create the native environment suitable for cells, hydrogels were previously studied. One of the most extensively studied synthetic hydrogels was a poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEGDA) hydrogel. However, the need for UV polymerization may introduce unwanted changes in cell morphology and viability. The hydrogel being proposed was a form of a thiol-acrylate hydrogel that can eliminate this problem …

Application Of Glycosyl Imidates And Nitrates In Carbohydrate Synthesis, Tinghua Wang Nov 2018

Application Of Glycosyl Imidates And Nitrates In Carbohydrate Synthesis, Tinghua Wang

Dissertations

Carbohydrates are the most abundant molecules among the four essential classes of biomolecules that also include nucleic acids, lipids and proteins. Unlike proteins and nucleic acids, which follow template-driven synthetic pathways, there is no general route to the synthesis of carbohydrates. The stereoselectivity of the formation of O-glycosidic linkages and the regioselectivity of protection and deprotection of specific hydroxyl groups over others represent two of the major challenges in carbohydrate chemistry. This thesis is dedicated to the development of novel strategies for efficient synthesis of carbohydrate building blocks and stereocontrolled glycosylations for step-economy oligosaccharide synthesis. Novel glycosyl donors with difluoro-3H-indol-2-yl …

Early Detection Of Corrosion Via Hydrogel-Based Spectroelectrochemical Sensors, Capri Ann Price Nov 2018

Early Detection Of Corrosion Via Hydrogel-Based Spectroelectrochemical Sensors, Capri Ann Price

Dissertations and Theses

The backbone of the industrialized world is comprised of refined, zerovalent metal, a material which thermodynamically favors an oxidative return to more chemically stable states. There are many methods used to slow or delay this process, such as protective coatings, sacrificial anodes, and alloys, but no method can entirely prevent corrosion. This body of work instead proposes detecting the earliest chemical markers of corrosion: that is, metal ions as they solubilize from a metal surface. Such information would allow maintenance personnel to make informed decisions about the necessity or lack thereof of preventive maintenance, and intervene before advanced damage has …
