A Study Of Aldehyde Derivatives Of Metallic Sulfamates., Edmond A. Morin Jul 1949

A Study Of Aldehyde Derivatives Of Metallic Sulfamates., Edmond A. Morin

Master's Theses

Sulfamic acid at one time had no particular value, and very little was known about the physical and chemical properties of this acid. At the present time , however, this acid is a commercial product of considerable importance and extensive investigation has been conducted to discover its many chemical properties. A very interesting group of compounds derived from sulfamates are the aldehyde addition products. The aldehyde derivatives of calcium sulfamate were studied and had a particular interest because of their greater stability, especially in the isolated, solid form. The aldehyde addition products of calcium studied included benzaldehyde, furfuraldehyde, for aldehyde, …

The Reactions Of Ethyl Acetoacetate With Certain Halogen Derivatives Of Alcohols, Harold E. Sullivan Jul 1949

The Reactions Of Ethyl Acetoacetate With Certain Halogen Derivatives Of Alcohols, Harold E. Sullivan

Master's Theses

Chemical literature records many series of compounds produced by the acetoacetic ester synthesis, but in no instance is combination of the acetoacetic ester with the halogenated alcohols, of which the chlorohydrins are examples, mentioned. The products of these reactions are substituted derivatives of the· acetoacetic ester. These products yield, upon hydrolysis, hydroxy-ketones. These acids and ketones may serve as intermediates for synthesizing other compounds. Many compounds which have medicinal value, such as pyrazolones and other ring compounds, may be synthesized from the acetoacetic ester derivatives. 'This study of the reactions of the acetoacetic ester with certain halogen derivatives of alcohols …

An Investigation Of The Dissociation Of Certain Cyclohexane Derivatives Of Aliphatic Acids, Jack Norman Finch May 1949

An Investigation Of The Dissociation Of Certain Cyclohexane Derivatives Of Aliphatic Acids, Jack Norman Finch

Master's Theses

For years it has been known that certain cyclic derivatives of aliphatic acids show hormone activity as growth regulators for some plants, and popular acceptance and application of the regulators has been remarkably rapid. Two commercially available growth regulating substances are indoleacetic acid and phenylacetic acid. Others also include indolebutyric acid and naphthaleneacetic acids (13). There are also certain phenoxy derivatives of acetic acid such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (commonly called 2,4 D), which have specific destructive effects to growing plants. Many derivatives of phenoxyacetic acid have been prepared, their physical properties determined, and an attempt made to correlate molecular …

Alkylaminoalkyl Esters Of 2-Thiophene Carboxylic And Furoic Acids, Henry Alouis Rutter Jr.

Master's Theses

The association of local anesthetic activity with alkaninoalkyl ester of aromatic carbonyl acids has been well susbstantietes. Compounds obtained as varieties of the "anesthesiophoric" group are usually capable of some degree of local anesthetic activity.

Alkylaminoalkyl Aryoxyacetates, William Kenneth Easley Jul 1947

Alkylaminoalkyl Aryoxyacetates, William Kenneth Easley

Master's Theses

Numerous inInvestigations into the preparation, properties, and effects plant growth substances have been carried out. It has been shown that phenoxyacetic acids, napthoxyacetic acids, esters, anides and salts of phenoxyacetic acids and certain substituted products of these acids are plant growth promoting substances.

It is the purpose ot this work to produce esters of phenoxyacetic and napthoxyacetic acids which contain a secondary amino group and as a result of their ability to form acid salts, such as hydrochlorides, water soluble compounds. These compounds would be readily applicable to plants in sprays.

Polyhydroxyamines, John Wotiz Jan 1943

Polyhydroxyamines, John Wotiz

Master's Theses

"The industrial growth of aliphatic chemistry, which has constituted one of the outstanding advances of recent years, has been almost entirely in the field of hydrocarbons and their simpler chlorine and oxygen derivatives… Representative of the aliphatic amines, possibly only the methyl, amyl and ethanol amines may be said to have been commercially available. And yet the field of aliphatic nitrogen chemistry possesses the greatest variety of known aliphatic compounds; there are at least several nitrogen analogs of each oxygen compound, often more stable, more definitely characterized, and more reactive chemically." Relatively few aminoalcohols, especially polyhydroxyaminoalcohols have been prepared. Due …

The Kolbe Synthesis With Alkyl Ortho-Xenols, Sidney Harris Apr 1939

The Kolbe Synthesis With Alkyl Ortho-Xenols, Sidney Harris

Master's Theses

The phenol series of compounds has shown marked therapeutic activity. Generally there are two types phenols used as germicides and fungicides - (a) the very soluble type such as the resorcinols and ( b) the less soluble type such as the phenyl phenols and salicylic acid and its derivatives.

Condensation Of Olefins With P-Mercapto-Diphenyl, Raymond Michael Abrams Apr 1939

Condensation Of Olefins With P-Mercapto-Diphenyl, Raymond Michael Abrams

Master's Theses

Markownikow's rule states that in the addition to unsaturated ,negative groups add to the carbon atom having the least number of Hydrogen atoms. It has been observed that mercaptans and hydrogen sulfide add to olefine contrary to Markownikow's rule in the presence of sodium alcoholates or sulfuric acid.

The Lime Content Of Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Osborne County, Kansas, Herman D. Search Jan 1939

The Lime Content Of Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Osborne County, Kansas, Herman D. Search

Master's Theses

This report is the result of several weeks of intensive study and investigation in the field and in the laboratory. In making this study of the rocks of Osborne County, Kansas, the writer is concerned chiefly with the chemistry of the rooks rather than with their geological formation. He has not attempted to make a complete analysis of the rocks, but has limited his investigation in order to determine certain facts concerning their line content. He has attempted to determine the consistency of the percentage of lime in a given member in various parts of the county and also of …

Preparation Of Thianthrene, Eugene Alton Talley Jan 1938

Preparation Of Thianthrene, Eugene Alton Talley

Master's Theses

This work was begun in an attempt to study further the preparation of thianthrene from 2-dichlorobenzene and alkali sulfides. g_-Dichlorobenzene is a liquid by-product in the preparation of its solid isomer, E-dichlorobenzene, which is used extensively for controlling moths and peach tree borers. The study of the preparation of thianthrene from the liquid isomer was undertaken because the preparation might develop into a possible use for the large quantities available.

Thianthrene might be made from 2-dibromo- and 2-diiodo-benzene but these are not as cheap or as easily obtained as the dichloro derivative and were not used in this study various …
