The Odds Don’T Lie: Mathematical Reasoning And Societal Ignorance In Don’T Look Up, Nysa Vedwan, Shane Carey Nov 2025

The Odds Don’T Lie: Mathematical Reasoning And Societal Ignorance In Don’T Look Up, Nysa Vedwan, Shane Carey

LASER Journal

In Adam McKay’s 2021 satirical sci-fi movie Don’t Look Up, two astronomers discover a comet heading directly toward Earth. Despite overwhelming evidence and near-certainty of global extinction, their warnings are ignored and ridiculed. This paper discusses the mathematical and scientific foundations of the movie’s social and political reception, and specifically focuses on orbital prediction and probabilistic modeling as they relate to public understanding of risk. This paper shows how data is often undermined by political and social dynamics, by connecting the fictional events of the movie with real-world crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency. In Don’t Look …

Thermodynamic Feasibility Of Nanoenergetic Systems Based On Metal Oxynitrides, Manoj Chhetri, Mkhitar A. Hobosyan, Maxim Zyskin, Karen S. Martirosyan

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A comprehensive computational study was conducted to identify and evaluate nano-energetic systems utilizing aluminum (Al) as the fuel and a range of metal oxynitrides as oxidizers. The primary objective was to determine combinations that yield highly exothermic reactions, specifically those that maximize gas generation, adiabatic combustion temperature, and energy release. These parameters are critical for optimizing the performance of energetic materials in applications such as controlled energy delivery, propulsion, and pyrotechnics. By systematically analyzing thermodynamic properties including the heat of formation, enthalpy of reaction, Gibbs free energy, and equilibrium reaction products across a range of Al/oxynitride stoichiometries, the study aimed …

Likelihoods For Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background Data Analysis, Gabriele Franciolini, Mauro Pieroni, Angelo Ricciardone, Joseph D. Romano

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a systematic study of likelihood functions used for stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) searches. By dividing the data into many short segments, one customarily takes advantage of the central limit theorem to justify a Gaussian cross-correlation likelihood. We show, with a hierarchy of ever more realistic examples—beginning with a single frequency bin and one detector, and then moving to two and three detectors with white and colored signal and noise—that approximating the exact Whittle likelihood by various Gaussian alternatives can induce systematic biases in the estimation of the SGWB parameters. We derive several approximations for the full likelihood …

In this study, we report the first high-resolution gas-phase infrared absorption spectra and anharmonic vibrational simulations for three nitrogenated aromatic molecules, namely indole (C8H7N), 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene (DBN; C7H12N2), and 1,8- diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU; C9H16N2) with excellent agreement between measurement and computation. Anharmonic cascade emission spectra (2–8 eV) of the three systems show that nitrogen substitution strongly modifies the emission spectra: indole reproduces the unidentified 3.3 μm emission in Titan’s atmosphere, while DBN and DBU exhibit redshifted aliphatic C–H stretches. In the 5–10 μm region, …

Determining The 17f(Α,P)20ne Reaction Rate For Application In Type I X-Ray Bursts, William Braverman Nov 2025

Determining The 17f(Α,P)20ne Reaction Rate For Application In Type I X-Ray Bursts, William Braverman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The 17F(α, p)20Ne reaction has been identified as an alternate pathway for breakout from the hot-CNO cycle that can be important in some X-ray burst scenarios. The 17F(α, p)20Ne reaction rate was previously determined through a parameterized exponential S-factor with a large enhancement from thermally-excited states based on statistical models with large uncertainties. We have measured the time-inverse 20Ne(p,α)17F cross section at center-of-mass energies ranging from 5.50 to 7.10 MeV using an activation method with a proton beam on a neon gas cell. Coincident detections of 511-keV γ-rays, resulting from electron-positron …

We report the observation of gravitational waves from two binary black hole coalescences during the fourth observing run of the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA detector network, GW241011 and GW241110. The sources of these two signals are characterized by rapid and precisely measured primary spins, nonnegligible spin–orbit misalignment, and unequal mass ratios between their constituent black holes. These properties are characteristic of binaries in which the more massive object was itself formed from a previous binary black hole merger and suggest that the sources of GW241011 and GW241110 may have formed in dense stellar environments in which repeated mergers can take place. As the …

Constraining Deviations From The Kerr Metric Via A Bumpy Parametrization And Particle Swarm Optimization In Extreme Mass-Ratio Inspirals, Xiaobo Zou, Xingyu Zhong, Wen-Biao Han, Soumya D. Mohanty

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The measurement of deviations in the Kerr metric using gravitational-wave observations will provide a clear signal of new physics. Previous studies have developed multiple parametrizations (e.g., “bumpy” spacetime) to characterize such deviations in extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs). These approaches often rely on the Fisher information matrix (FIM) formalism to quantify the constraining power of future space-borne gravitational-wave detectors, such as LISA and Tianqin. For instance, using the analytical kludge waveform model under varying source configurations, such methods have achieved constraint sensitivity levels ranging from 10−4 to 10−2 on the dimensionless bumpy parameter 𝛿⁢˜𝑄 for LISA. In this paper, we advance …

On 2023 November 23 the two LIGO observatories both detected GW231123, a gravitational-wave signal consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses and (90\% credible intervals), at luminosity distance 0.7-4.1 Gpc and redshift of , and a network signal-to-noise ratio of 20.7. Both black holes exhibit high spins, and respectively. A massive black hole remnant is supported by an independent ringdown analysis. Some properties of GW231123 are subject to large systematic uncertainties, as indicated by differences in inferred parameters between signal models. The primary black hole lies within or above the theorized mass gap where black holes between …

The landmark discovery that neutrinos have mass and can change type (or flavour) as they propagate—a process called neutrino oscillation1,2,3,4,5,6—has opened up a rich array of theoretical and experimental questions being actively pursued today. Neutrino oscillation remains the most powerful experimental tool for addressing many of these questions, including whether neutrinos violate charge-parity (CP) symmetry, which has possible connections to the unexplained preponderance of matter over antimatter in the Universe7,8,9,10,11. Oscillation measurements also probe the mass-squared differences between the different neutrino mass states (Δm2), whether there are two light states and a heavier …

Enhanced Particle Interactions In Highly Curved Spacetime, Bradley Shapiro Oct 2025

Enhanced Particle Interactions In Highly Curved Spacetime, Bradley Shapiro

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Compact objects, such as black holes and neutron stars, are known to be surrounded by dense clouds of particles, including but not limited to photons, various plasmas, and potentially dark matter and gravitons. These environments are of immense research interest, not only for the purpose of understanding the compact objects they surround, but also in the search to identify new particles, especially dark matter. However, certain particle physics calculations are well developed in flat spacetime but intractable in curved spacetime. In this thesis, I present a formalism by which some of these calculations may be made tractable within a perturbative …

Cycle 1 JWST observations of Cepheids in Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) hosts resolved their red-giant-dominated near-infrared backgrounds, sharply reducing crowding and showing that photometric bias in lower-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data does not account for the Hubble tension. We present cycle 2 JWST observations of >100 Cepheids in NGC 3447, a unique system that pushes this test to the limit by transitioning from low to no background contamination. NGC 3447, an SN Ia host at D ≈ 25 Mpc, is an interacting pair comprising (i) a spiral with mixed stellar populations, typical of H0 calibrators, and (ii) a …

Scientific Authority In The Public Sphere: The Heroic Legacies Of Carl Sagan And Philip Zimbardo, Scott T. Allison

Heroism Science

This article examines the parallel trajectories of Carl Sagan and Philip Zimbardo as scientists who assumed the role of public intellectuals. Their careers highlighted the tensions and opportunities inherent in bridging scholarly research and public engagement. Sagan, an astronomer, popularized the cosmic perspective to promote planetary stewardship, while Zimbardo, a social psychologist, used compelling methodologies to explore the psychological underpinnings of cruelty and heroism. Both were, in their own ways, heroic in their commitment to making science accessible, employing storytelling and mass media to render complex concepts understandable and relevant, thereby expanding the societal relevance of their disciplines. However, their …

Polar ring galaxies (PRGs) are peculiar galaxies that show a ring of stars, gas, and dust oriented roughly over the poles of the central ‘host’ galaxy (i.e. roughly orthogonal to the disc of the host galaxy). The formation models for these rings involve mergers or tidal interactions of the host galaxy with another galaxy. Although the identified PRGs look different from each other, they all have a ring that is not in the same plane as the disc of the host galaxy. Unlike in galaxies such as our Milky Way, where stars form in spiral arms, the rings exemplify an …

The study presents a confirmation of six quadruples with two sets of eclipses that have the 2+2 architecture. These so-called doubly eclipsing systems still present a quite rare group of stars. We collected all available photometric data and carried out a detailed analysis of them. In addition to the precise TESS photometry used to model the light curves for both inner eclipsing binaries, photometric survey data were also used, and more than 100 nights of our own dedicated observations were carried out. These were mainly used for the detection of the long-term evolution of orbital periods. Thanks to these data, …

The Heart Of The Crab: Analyzing The Vhe Emission From The Crab Pulsar, Adi Empie, Thao Nguyen, Avery Archer

Annual Student Research Poster Session

The Crab Nebula is one of the most studied astrophysical objects at very-high-energies (VHE) and is one of the brightest sources of VHE gamma-rays. The Crab Nebula is a pulsar wind nebula with the Crab pulsar providing the energy and particles to power the nebula. The gamma-ray emission from the nebula and pulsar are understood to come from relativistic particles but the processes that are responsible for accelerating these particles is not well understood. Studying the highest energy emission from the Crab Nebula can provide valuable insight into the underlying emission mechanisms at work. This project was intended to examine …

Numerical Simulations Of Highly Eccentric Systems Of Binary Neutron Stars With Spin, Victoria White

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses

Binary Neutron Star (BNS) mergers are among the most energetic events in the universe, producing gravitational waves, electromagnetic radiation, and heavy elements. While previous research has utilized simulations for collisions, few studies have accounted for how the spin of the stars affects mergers. This thesis contains a general overview of the topic and a research component conducted in the field of numerical relativity. High-performance computing was used to simulate BNS collisions, examining how spin affects the inspiral, merger, and post-merger phases. Computations used the Einstein Toolkit, Cactus framework, and the numerical tool developed by the FAU Relativity Group, Sgrid. The …

We present a detailed analysis of the low-mass detached eclipsing binary system BB Persei, which contains two K-type stars in a circular orbit with a short period of 0.4856 d. We used light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Tess), which observed BB Per in five sectors, to determine its photometric properties and a precise orbital ephemeris. The solution of the Tess light curve in Phoebe results in a detached configuration, where the temperature of the primary component was fixed to T 1 = 5 300 K according to Lamost, which gives us T 2 = 5 050 ± …

X-Ray Microcalorimeter Observations Of High-Mass X-Ray Binaries With The Resolve Instrument Onboard Xrism, Pragati Pradhan, Masahiro Tsujimoto

Publications

The X-ray Imaging and Spectrometer Mission (XRISM) was put into orbit successfully in September 2023. Resolve, one of the scientific instruments onboard XRISM, hosts an X-ray spectrometer based on X-ray microcalorimetery technology. It excels in high spectral resolution, a large throughput, a large bandpass, low background, and good timing accuracy. These properties are suited to bring new insights especially in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXB). We describe these unique features of Resolve and present initial highlights of two HMXB sources.

The Be X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 went through its third recorded giant outburst from June 2021 to early 2022. We present the results of both spectral and timing analysis based on NICER monitoring, covering the 2−10 keV flux range from 20 to 310 mCrab. Dense monitoring with observations carried out about every second day and a total exposure time of ∼160 ks allowed us to closely track the source evolution over the outburst. Changes in the spectral shape and pulse profiles showed a stable luminosity dependence during the rise and decline. The same type of dependence has been seen in …

When accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) undergo bright X-ray outbursts, their luminosity-dependent spectral and timing features can be analyzed in detail. The XRP GRO J1750-27 recently underwent one such episode, during which it was observed with NuSTAR and monitored with NICER. Such a data set is rarely available, as it samples the outburst over more than 1 month at a luminosity that is always exceeding ∼5 × 1037 erg s−1 . This value is larger than the typical critical luminosity value, where a radiative shock is formed above the surface of the neutron star. Our data analysis of the joint spectra …

This study presents an innovative numerical method for solving linear fractional differential equations (LFDEs) using modified Bernstein polynomial bases. The proposed approach effectively addresses the challenges posed by the nonlocal nature of fractional derivatives, providing a robust framework for handling multiple initial and boundary value constraints. By integrating the LFDEs and approximating the solutions with modified fractional-order Bernstein polynomials, we derive operational matrices to solve the resulting system numerically. The method’s accuracy is validated through several examples, showing excellent agreement between numerical and exact solutions. Comparative analysis with existing data further confirms the reliability of the approach, with absolute errors …

We report a rapid aqueous method for synthesizing monodisperse gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), employing 2-propynylamine as both an intrinsic reducing agent and a surface-stabilizing ligand. This self-mediated process—achieved in a single step—yields spherical AuNPs with an average diameter of 4.0 ± 1.0 nm and a well-defined localized surface plasmon resonance band centered at 520 nm. Acting as a bifunctional molecule, 2-propynylamine simultaneously reduces HAuCl4·3H2O to elemental gold and passivates the nanoparticle surface through coordination via the amine group, while preserving a terminal alkyne (–C≡CH) functionality. This reactive moiety remains exposed and chemically accessible, enabling post-synthetic modification through Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition. Control …

"Aurora season" has just begun, but that doesn't guarantee everyone can see them.

The northern lights are the aurora borealis, and the southern hemisphere has the aurora australis. There is an auroral oval circling each pole of Earth, moving roughly over the Arctic and Antarctic Circles most of the time. Since most people live in the northern hemisphere, the northern lights are more well-known.

It is still unclear whether exoplanets in compact multiplanet systems such as TRAPPIST-1 are able to accrete large quantities of volatiles, grow to sufficient mass, and maintain robust atmospheres and hydrospheres. Previous estimates of water content in M-dwarf systems have largely relied on population synthesis or atmosphere–interior evolution models, often treating impacts and atmospheric loss in isolation. In this work, we combined impact delivery, impact erosion, and mantle-atmosphere exchange within a unified framework that tracks volatile evolution through stochastic collision histories. By explicitly including both planetesimal accretion and the prolonged luminous pre-main-sequence phase of M dwarfs, we find systematically lower …

Space-based gravitational wave missions such as LISA, Taiji, and Tianqin rely on the time-delay interferometry (TDI) technique to observe low-frequency signals such as Galactic binaries (GBs), massive black-hole binaries, and extreme-mass-ratio inspirals. Among these sources, resolving the large population of GBs poses a central challenge for data analysis. In this work, we present GBSIEVER-C, a pipeline implemented in C and parallelized using OpenMP (Open Multi-Processing), along with a range of additional algorithmic optimizations, including a fast implementation of second-generation TDI response modeling. It builds upon the previous MATLAB-based pipeline that demonstrated competitive performance on LISA Data Challenge (LDC) data. To …

The gravitational-wave signal GW250114 was observed by the two LIGO detectors with a network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 80. The signal was emitted by the coalescence of two black holes with near-equal masses m_{1}=33.6_{-0.8}^{+1.2}M_{⊙} and m_{2}=32.2_{-1.3}^{+0.8}M_{⊙}, and small spins χ_{1,2}≤0.26 (90% credibility) and negligible eccentricity e≤0.03. Postmerger data excluding the peak region are consistent with the dominant quadrupolar (ℓ=|m|=2) mode of a Kerr black hole and its first overtone. We constrain the modes' frequencies to ±30% of the Kerr spectrum, providing a test of the remnant's Kerr nature. We also examine Hawking's area law, also known as the second law …
