X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy Of The Multiphase Interstellar Medium: Oxygen And Neon Abundances, Y Yao, Qd Wang

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

X-ray absorption spectroscopy provides a powerful tool in determining the metal abundances in various phases of the interstellar medium (ISM). We present a case study of the sight line toward 4U 1820-303, based on Chandra grating observations. The detection of O I, O II, O III, O VII, O VIII, and Ne IX Kα absorption lines allows us to measure the atomic column densities of the neutral, warm ionized, and hot phases of the ISM through much of the Galactic disk. By comparing these measurements with the 21 cm hydrogen emission and with the pulsar dispersion measure, we estimate the …

A Detection Of [C Ii] Line Emission In The Z = 4.7 Qso Br 1202–0725, D Iono, Min Yun, M Elvis, Ab Peck, Ptp Ho, Dj Wilner, Tr Hunter, S Muller Jan 2006

A Detection Of [C Ii] Line Emission In The Z = 4.7 Qso Br 1202–0725, D Iono, Min Yun, M Elvis, Ab Peck, Ptp Ho, Dj Wilner, Tr Hunter, S Muller

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We present ~3'' resolution imaging of the z = 4.7 QSO BR 1202-0725 at 900 μm from the Submillimeter Array. The two submillimeter continuum components are clearly resolved from each other, and the positions are consistent with previous lower frequency images. In addition, we detect [C II] line emission from the northern component at L = 4.5 × 109 L. The ratio of [C II] to far-infrared luminosity is 0.04% for the northern component, and an upper limit of <0.03% is obtained for the southern component. These ratios are similar to the low values found in local ultraluminous galaxies, indicating that the excitation conditions are different from those found in local field galaxies. X-ray emission is detected by Chandra from the southern component at L0.5-2 keV = 3 × 1045 ergs s-1 and, at …

Interferometric 890 Mu M Images Of High-Redshift Submillimeter Galaxies, D Iono, Ab Peck, A Pope, C Borys, D Scott, Dj Wilner, M Gurwell, Ptp Ho, Min Yun, S Matsushita, Gr Petitpas, Js Dunlop, M Elvis, A Blain, E Le Floc'h Jan 2006

Interferometric 890 Mu M Images Of High-Redshift Submillimeter Galaxies, D Iono, Ab Peck, A Pope, C Borys, D Scott, Dj Wilner, M Gurwell, Ptp Ho, Min Yun, S Matsushita, Gr Petitpas, Js Dunlop, M Elvis, A Blain, E Le Floc'h

We present high-resolution 890 μm images of two 20 mJy submillimeter galaxies, SMM J123711+622212 and MIPS J142824.0+352619, obtained using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Using submillimeter interferometric observations with an angular resolution of 25, the coordinates of these high-redshift sources are determined with an accuracy of 02. The new SMA data on SMM J123711+622212 reveal an unresolved submillimeter source offset to the east by 08 from an optical galaxy found in deep HST images, suggesting either a large galaxy with a dusty central region or an interacting galaxy system. The SMA image of hyperluminous (LFIR = 3.2 × 10 …

A Magellanic Origin For The Warp Of The Galaxy, Md Weinberg, L Blitz Jan 2006

A Magellanic Origin For The Warp Of The Galaxy, Md Weinberg, L Blitz

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We show that a Magellanic Cloud origin for the warp of the Milky Way can explain most quantitative features of the outer H I layer recently identified by Levine et al. We construct a model, similar to that presented by Weinberg in 1998, that produces distortions in the dark matter halo, and we calculate the combined effect of these dark halo distortions and the direct tidal forcing by the Magellanic Clouds on the disk warp in the linear regime. The interaction of the dark matter halo with the disk and resonances between the orbit of the Clouds and the disk …
