Increased Coding Potential Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Victoria Jefferson
Increased Coding Potential Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Victoria Jefferson
Theses and Dissertations
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) costs the cattle industry millions of dollars in costs in treatment and loss every year in the United States. A significant pathogen often contributes to BRD is Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), a double stranded DNA virus with the ability to establish latency in the trigeminal ganglia and neurons. Primary infection with BoHV-1 results in immunosuppression that increases the risk of secondary bacterial infection and pneumonia. Because herpesviruses infect their hosts for life and can be reactivated in times of stress, BoHV-1 can present a recurring risk of BRD. The following research aims to expand the knowledge …
Effects Of Pregnancy And Progesterone On Atrial Fibrillation, Heloisa M. Rutigliano
Effects Of Pregnancy And Progesterone On Atrial Fibrillation, Heloisa M. Rutigliano

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrythmia in adults with likely sex-specific risk factors. Female sex hormones may be important in modulating risk for atrial fibrillation. We hypothesize that pregnancy and progesterone (P4), a hormone found in high levels during pregnancy with abrupt withdrawal immediately after parturition, modulates AF susceptibility in female goats. Cardiac specific TGF-?1 transgenic female goats and age-matched wild-type (WT) female goats were utilized. Pacemakers were implanted in all animals for continuous arrhythmia monitoring and AF inducibility. AF inducibility was evaluated using 5 separate 10 s bursts of atrial pacing (160 - 200 ms). In …
Cancer Eye Of Cattle, M R. Gardiner, J. L. Anderson, D. E. Robertson
Cancer Eye Of Cattle, M R. Gardiner, J. L. Anderson, D. E. Robertson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Cancer of the eye and eyelids is mainly a disease of cattle, although it occasionally occurs in most species of animals and in man. It is the most common cancer in cattle, especially in certain breeds.
Effects Of Mastitis On Milk Yield And Composition, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Effects Of Mastitis On Milk Yield And Composition, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
EVERY DAIRY farmer knows how much he spends on the treatment of cows affected with mastitis, but the actual loss in production is more difficult to estimate.
As part of the current mastitis research programme the Department of Agriculture's Animal and Dairying Divisions surveyed 37 dairy herds with a believed high incidence of mastitis.
Can Mastitis Be Eliminated?, F C. Wilkinson
Can Mastitis Be Eliminated?, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Can mastitis be eliminated from a dairy herd? The results of a 12-month continuous study of four commercial herds show that it could be done.
Calfhood Diseases. 1. Gastro-Intestinal Diseases, M R. Gardiner
Calfhood Diseases. 1. Gastro-Intestinal Diseases, M R. Gardiner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
CALFHOOD disease may be divided for convenience into three main categories:
• Those affecting the gastro-intestinal tract, including diseases of an infectious nature and those arising as a result of infestation by worms (parasitism).
• Those affecting the respiratory system, including lungworms.
• Those resulting from nutritional deficiencies, especially vitamins and minerals.
Lice On Cattle, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Lice On Cattle, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Lice can cause serious financial losses through reduced growth rates and loss of production in beef and dairy cattle.
This article describes the main species and recommended control measures.
Acetonaemia In Dairy Cows, F C. Wilkinson
Acetonaemia In Dairy Cows, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ACETONAEMIA is a common disease of newly calved cows in the dairying districts of Western Australia.
Affected cows practically dry off and lose a lot of body condition; these are the main causes of loss to the owners.
Milk Fever (Hypocalcaemia) Of Cows, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Milk Fever (Hypocalcaemia) Of Cows, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE condition known as milk fever is almost essentially a disease of highly productive adult milking cows at the time of calving.
It is characterised by a low blood calcium level causing a sudden general depression of consciousness of the cow and muscular paralysis.
Without treatment most cases result in the death of the cow.
