First Identification Of Neospora Caninum In Thailand, Than Kyaw, Prachin Virakul, Manop Muangyai, Wijit Banlunara
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
An immunohistochemical examination of aborted bovine tissues, collected from two dairy farms that had a high abortion rate (7%), detected the organism Neospora caninum (NC). Five out of 12 aborting cows (41.7%) were seropositive to NC using a competitive ELISA test. Neospora-tachyzoites were detected in the placenta of a seropositive aborting cow. Neither NC parasites nor cysts were detected in other fetal tissues. The identification of the Neospora-parasite and a high percentage of Neospora seropositive aborting cows, suggested NC as the possible cause of abortion. This is the first identification of the NC parasite in Thailand.

Ovarian steroid hormones are known to be an important modulator in the regulation of reproductive function in the female. The levels of oestrogen and progesterone have been well documented whilst interacting during the entire oestrous cycle but their specific receptors in the target cells are less understood. Experimental toxoplasmosis was induced in rabbits using different routes. A total of 42 animals were used; 36 of them were in the experimental groups and the other six comprised the control group. In addition, five guinea pigs were used for preparing hyperimmune sera against Toxoplasma gondii. The Ankara strain was inoculated intravenously (group I, n: 12), intraperitoneally (group II, n: 12) and intradermally (group III, n: 12) into the rabbits. A female, grey, 24-year-old horse was showing clinical signs of weight loss, ataxia, hersutism, high fever, dysuria, nasal discharge and moist rale lung sounds. Gross examination revealed a single, white, firm, pituitary mass with a diameter 2.5 x 2.1 x 1.5 cm, compressed and overlying the hypothalamus. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed the characteristic of a ACTH-derived pituitary adenoma.

The retrospective study of 30 cases records using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded intestines, from Feline Panleukopenia (FPL) infected cats using histopathological criteria as seen by the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Chulalongkorn University between 1997-2001, was undertaken. The objective of the study was to examine FPLV infection in feline intestines showing characteristic lesions of parvovirus enteritis and to describe the relationship between the intestinal microscopic lesions of FPL in affected cats, with the location of FPL antigens, using immunohistochemical methods. A female, 10-month old, mixed breed cat showed clinical signs of severe dehydration, purulent nasal discharge, dyspnea, severe crepitating lung sounds and no response to antibiotic treatment. Upon necropsy, histopathology revealed severe, diffuse, fibrinopurulent pleuropneumonia and numerous, homogeneous, amphophilic, intranuclear inclusion bodies in the pulmonary alveolar macrophages, bronchial and alveolar epithelium and bronchial glandular epitheliums. Immunohistochemical studies using 3 different monoclonal, anti-Feline Herpesvirus type 1 antibodies, revealed immunoreactivity of viral antigen in the lung that was associated with the histopathological changes. Monoclonal, anti-glycoprotein B, antibody showed the strongest immunoreactivity.

Formalin fixed tissues from an aborted foal which had been diagnosed as having Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) infection, on histopathological criteria, were examined for EHV antigen using immunohistochemistry. EHV antigen was found in the focal necrotic area of the liver, especially in hepatocytes and Kupffer cells. Intranuclear and intracytoplasmic, immuno-positive labelings were also prominent in bronchiolar epithelial cells. The method allowed the visualization of the antigenic site distribution and their subsequent correlation with histopathological changes.

In this study, our aim was to determine the distribution of specific immunoreactivities in some regions of the digestive tract of the pike-perch (Stizostedion lucioperca) against the antisera Gastrin, Serotonin (5 HT), and Cholecystokinin (CCK). The samples were taken from the stomach, intestine and pyloric caeca and the Avidin-Biotin-Immunoperoxidase method was applied. At the end of this application the immunoreactivities against all antisera were observed as intensively in the cells of the gland and less in the cells of Lamina epithelialis. The diagnosis of canine distemper (CD) by a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique using 2 sets of primer which were specific to two regions on the cDNA of nucleocapsid protein (NP) gene of the canine distemper virus (CDV), Onderstepoort strain. Together with pathology and immunohistochemistry, the RT-PCR test was used to confirm the diagnosis of canine distemper in 20 dogs. Histopathological examination revealed that 70% (14/20) had pneumonia, 50% (10/20) had non-suppurative encephalitis, 33% (7/20) had splenic follicular necrosis and 35% (7/ 20) had gastroenteritis. The exact role of the p53 tumor suppressor gene, c-erbB-2 and c-yes oncogenes in the development of canine skin tumors is still debatable. To elucidate the involvement of these oncogenes in canine skin carcinogenesis, we examined the expression of the protein in 60 skin tumor samples using avidin-biotin complex immunohistochemistry, with polyclonal antibodies directed against each protein, on formalinfixed, paraffin-embedded sections. Positive nuclear staining for p53 protein was observed in 12/60 cases (20%) which included, 6/15(40%) squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and 4/8(50%) perianal gland tumors (PGT). Forty-six formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded canine mammary tumors, 15 benign and 31 malignant, were studied immunohistochemically. Mouse monoclonal anti-alpha-cytokeratin 18, mouse monoclonal anti-alpha-cytokeratin (pan cytokeratin), mouse monoclonal anti-alpha-smooth muscle actin and mouse monoclonal anti-vimentin antibodies were used. The ductal and acinar epithelium stained positively for cytokeratin 18 and pan cytokeratin, although there was no immunoreactivity in some tumors. Metaplastic squamous cells in two solid carcinomas were positive for both cytokeratin 18 and pan cytokeratin. A9-year-old female Shih Tzu dog was presented with a 3-day history of anorexia, depression, vomiting, and watery diarrhea. The clinical symptoms progressed continuously until the dog died, 3 days after admission. At necropsy numerous white nodules of various sizes were found in the small intestine, particularly the ileum. Microscopically, the mass revealed diffused, infiltrative growth of a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma invading the submucosa and muscular layers of the small intestinal wall. The mass was characterized by an acinar or tubular pattern with mucin in the lumen.
