A 5-year-old mixed-breed dog presenting with diffuse lesions was diagnosed with cutaneous plasmacytoma. Sites where tumors occurred most often involved the skin of the facial areas, as well as that of the shoulder, neck, and back of the body. No systemic findings were present in spite of a significant enlargement of the lesions. The tumors varied in diameter, the largest being 5-10 cm. Tissue samples obtained from tumoral masses were fixed in 10% formalin, processed routinely, embedded in paraffin, cut into sections of 4-5 µm, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of capsaicin on the testis distribution of transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGF\beta2) and gene expression using real-time PCR in pubescent rats. The purpose of this study is to examine the gene expression level of glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) in the liver of healthy and diabetic mice, its localization in the tissue, and structural changes in the liver. The objective of this study was to investigate the morphology and the distribution of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), somatostatin (SS), gastrin (Gas), glucagon (Glu), and substance P immunoreactive (IR) cells in the digestive tract of gray goose by the immunohistochemical streptavidin-peroxidase method. The samples were taken from 10 healthy adult gray geese. The results showed that 5 kinds of IR cells were mainly distributed between the mucous epithelium and intestinal gland. The present study was aimed at pathologically and immunohistochemically evaluating the effects of interferon gamma (IFN-\gamma) and aminoguanidine (AG) in rats experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica. A total of 44 Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. With the exception of the controls (fourth group), the remaining rats were infected orally with 25 metacerceria of F. hepatica. The first group was administered 0.2% AG in drinking water daily, in order to block nitric oxide (NO) production. The present study describes giant-cell tumor of bone (GCToB) with lymph node involvement in a 5-year-old crossbred cat. The animal was referred to the surgery clinic with progressive subcutaneous swelling in the left proximal femoral region, severe lameness, constipation, and dysuria. A moderately firm, subcutaneous, palpable mass, 9 cm in diameter, was observed, and biopsy samples were taken. Histopathologically, the mass was constituted by ovoid-shaped mononuclear cells intermixed with many multinucleated giant cells (MGC). Immunohistochemically, the giant cells were positively stained with antivimentin, and the same cells were negative for antidesmin and anti-S100 staining. Primary Vaginal Fibroleiomyosarcoma In A 4-Year-Old Holstein-Friesian Cow, Hamdi̇ Avci, Güneş Seri̇n, Ahmet Aydoğan, Serap Bi̇ri̇nci̇oğlu

A case of fibroleiomyosarcoma of the vagina in a 4-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow is described. The tumour was 6.5 × 5 × 4.2 cm in size, weighed 87.73 g, and had a solid appearance. Histologically, the tumour was composed of smooth muscle and fibrous tissue components with spindle-shaped cells with eosinophilic fibrillary cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells reacted with antibodies to \alpha-SMA, desmin, and vimentin but not with antibodies to CD34, CD68, and S-100 protein. Both histologically and immunohistochemically it showed the features of a fibroleiomyosarcoma.

CD4+ memory T cells are depleted in mucosal tissues post human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection without restoration to pre-infection levels during progressive course of disease. Bone marrow (BM) as a hematopoietic organ has been investigated for hematologic and morphologic changes during HIV infection. However, BM as a primary lymphoid tissue during HIV infection has been poorly characterized. The present study examined the mammary glands and supramammary lymph nodes of cows with a history of abortion due to Brucella abortus, and presents the histopathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological results. The study included 11 Brucella-seropositive cows that aborted during their first gestation. Histopathologically, the mammary glands showed lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic interstitial mastitis. The lymph nodes had lymphofollicular hyperplasia and medullary plasmacytosis. Immunohistochemistry results showed brucellar antigens, predominantly in the cytoplasm of macrophages, and neutrophils in the intralobular interstitium and periductal stroma in the udders of 3 cows. White muscle disease (WMD) is a world-wide nutritional disease of all animal species characterised by degeneration of skeletal and cardiac muscles. In the present study we determined the cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in hearts of the lambs with WMD (n = 15). Eight clinically healthy lambs served as control. For this purpose, anti-S100 whole molecule polyclonal antibody and anti-S100 \alpha and anti-S100 \beta monoclonal antibodies were used on paraffin sections collected from the cecum, ileum, colon, rectum, and bursa of Fabricius of chicks experimentally infected with E. tenella. This report describes a case of multicentric intrahepatic biliary cystadenoma observed in a 13-year-old, male, Irish setter dog. The dog had a history of chronic inappetence, weight loss, intermittent icterus, and diarrhoea. In the ultrasonographic examination of the abdominal organs, 5 spherical masses were found in various liver lobes. The largest mass was 12 cm in diameter and was located on the quadrate lobe. It had spongy consistency and had several cystic structures, 3 mm-2.5 cm in diameter, on the cut surface. In the present study, an ileal leiomyoma encountered in a captive zebra (Equus burchelli) was reported. A 29-year-old, female zebra was found dead in the Bursa zoo. According to the referring veterinarian the most prominent clinical signs were intermittent colic (responsive to analgesics) and constipation. At post mortem examination, abdomen was severely distended. A firm, multilobular, well vascularized and encapsulated tumoural mass, 12 cm in diameter, embedded into the proximal part of the ileum wall, and protruded from the serosal surface was found. An immunohistochemical study describes the localization of IgM containing cells involved in the primary immune organs of tilapia and the fate of E. tarda antigen distributed in the tissues during a course of intraperitoneal challenge. The E. tarda antigen was diffusely detected in various organs except the brain and spinal cord. The positive signals were identified within various cell types, including phagocytic cells, serosal mesothelia, myocardia, intestinal and gill epithelia and glomerular capillary endothelia. Collaboration was established in 2001 to evaluate a commercially available immunohistochemistry assay kit for the detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) disease–associated prion protein in formic acid–treated formalin-fixed samples of bovine brain. The kit protocol was evaluated at the National Centre for Foreign Animal Diseases (Winnipeg, Canada) and the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (Weybridge, U.K.). The U.K. laboratory provided paraffin-embedded blocks of brainstem (medulla oblongata at the level of the obex) from 100 positive cases defined by clinical signs and histopathology, and 100 clinically suspect but BSE-negative samples defined by histopathology and immunohistochemistry with anti-PrP monoclonal antibody R145. The aim of the present study was to apply immunohistochemistry, using a commercially available monoclonal antibody, for the diagnosis of aspergillosis in adult turkeys. Eight adult turkeys were studied. The lungs revealed grossly a few yellowish-white granulomas. Histopathologically, the granulomas were distributed in the pulmonary parenchyma or occasionally located around the airways. A few fungal hyphae were detected within the necrotic debris of the granulomas in the lungs using routine fungal stains. The present study describes pathological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic findings in the respiratory tract and skin of chickens naturally infected with avian pox virus. Respiratory distress, depression, and cyanosis were found in the chickens upon clinical examination. At necropsy, erosion, crusts, and nodules were observed on the comb, wattle, and eyelids. Histopathological examination revealed that the epithelial cells in the stratum spinosum were hyperplastic, and that their cytoplasm contained large, eosinophilic inclusion bodies. Epithelial hyperplasia was also prominent in the mucosa of the trachea and bronchi, with characteristic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and severe submucosal accumulation of mononuclear cells. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors (ERs and PRs, respectively) in oviduct adenocarcinomas in laying hens. In all, 32 oviduct adenocarcinomas (18 primary tumors and 14 intestinal metastases) from Babcock B-380 laying hens 16-18 months old were stained with commercially available monoclonal antibodies against mouse-anti-human ERs and mouse-anti-human PRs. In the microscopic examination, 13 tumors (7 oviduct adenocarcinomas and 6 intestinal metastases) stained positively for ERs and 12 tumors (4 oviduct adenocarcinomas and 8 intestinal metastases) gave a positive reaction to PR antibody. Two commercially available automated immunohistochemistry platforms, Ventana NexES and DakoCytomation Autostainer Universal Staining System, were compared for diagnosing sheep scrapie and cervid chronic wasting disease. Both automated platforms used the same antiprion protein monoclonal primary antibodies, but different platform-specific linker and amplification reagents and procedures. Duplicate sections of brainstem (at the level of the obex) and lymphoid tissue (retropharyngeal lymph node or tonsil) from the same tissue block were immunostained for the comparison. Systemic candidiasis is a rare disease of animals. In this study, the clinical course, and cultural and pathological findings of systemic candidiasis are described and presumed predisposing factors are investigated in 3 dogs. Pathologically, pyogranulomatous lesions in various organs were present in all dogs. Blastospores, pseudohyphae, and true hyphae of Candida albicans were observed with periodic acid Schiff, Gomori's methenamine silver, and immunohistochemistry. Administrations of broad-spectrum antibiotics and corticosteroids and, in one dog, parvoviral infection were thought to be predisposing factors leading to opportunistic infection. The aims of the present study were to investigate the expression of the progesterone receptor (PR) and to compare whether there was any difference between pyometra cases and normal bitch uteri, during dioestrus, by means of immunohistochemistry. The uterine samples were collected from bitches which clients had submitted for spaying and for pyometra treatment. The results showed that a difference was obvious in the connective tissue stroma and myometrium in which a higher expression of PR was observed in the pyometra group.It may be postulated that the difference in PR expression in these uterine compartments may be involved in the …

The regional distribution of endocrine cells was studied in the gastrointestinal tract of the freshwater turtle, Mauremys caspica caspica, by immunohistochemistry using antisera against serotonin, somatostatin, gastrin, insulin, substance P, glucagon and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP). The immunoreactive cells were located in the gastric glands of stomach regions and in the intestinal epithelium with variable frequencies. Most of the immunoreactive cells in the intestine were spherical or spindle-like in shape (open-type cells), while round cells (closed-type cells) were occasionally found in the stomach. The study looked at the relationship between the expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein, histological types, PCNA and AgNORs indices, in feline mammary tumors. Sixty, surgically resected, mammary tumors from cats were collected and histological processed. The expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein was detected by immunohistochemistry and was seen in benign hyperplasia, adenosis and malignant groups. The c-erbB2 oncogene protein expression in malignant, feline mammary tumors was 41.67% (25/60) which could be divided into simple tubular ACC, 25% (6/24), simple papillary ACC, 78.6% (11/14), solid carcinoma, 26.7% (4/15) and cribiform carcinoma, 57.14% (4/7). There were statistically significantly differences (p<0.05) in the expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein between simple tubular ACC, compared with simple papillary ACC and solid carcinomas. The expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein in specimens, classified by histological malignancy grades revealed, grade I, 42.11% and grade II, 41.46% but there was no statistically significant difference between them. An evaluation of a proliferative marker shown by a mean (±SD) of PCNA, was 34.63±23.87 and the mean (±SD) of AgNORs was 1.23±0.18. There was no significant difference between the PCNA and AgNORs index of both the histological types and the histological malignancy grades. However, a statistical difference of mean PCNA and AgNORs indices was noted in both c-erbB2 positive and c-erbB2 negative groups. The mean PCNA indices and AgNORs indices in c-erbB2 positive samples were 26.52±18.68 and 1.12±0.27 respectively, while the c-erbB2 negative ones were 39.43±26.24 and 1.28±0.19 respectively. In conclusion, c-erbB2 oncogene protein expression is considered to be an effective prognostic factor for adenocarcinoma subtypes of feline mammary tumors as it is in human and canine cases. However, integration of all the parameters (c-erbB2 oncogene protein, PCNA index, AgNORs index, histological types and clinical data) may achieve a more precise prognosis in feline, mammary tumor cases.

Twenty, 3-week-old, crossbred pigs from a herd free from porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) were inoculated intranasally and intramusculary (1 ml each 102.5 TCID50/ml) with Thai PRRSV isolates of the US genotype (01NP1) (n=9) or the EU genotype (02SB3) (n=8). The purpose of the present study was to determine the distribution of cells containing glucagon (A), insulin (B), and somatostatin (D) in the goose pancreas. Small pieces of tissue from 5 adult geese (Anser anser) pancreases were dissected under deep ether anaesthesia. Sections were stained with Crossmon's connective tissue stain for general observations and Gomori's method for pancreatic islet cells. The expression of the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) was investigated in domestic cat ovaries and uteri by mean of immunohistochemistry, using monoclonal antibody against ERα. The stages of the oestrous cycle were determined by vaginal cytology and serum steroid levels which were taken before operation. In the uterus, positive staining was found in the nuclei of all uterine cell types in different proportions and staining intensity. During oestrous, the staining intensity and the proportion of positive cells were highest in the epithelium (both the surface epithelium and the glandular epithelium) as well as in the myometrium.
