Correction Of Experimentally Induced Facial Paralysis With Great Auricular Nerve - Facial Nerve Coaptation, Ömer Beşalti, Ahmet Özak, Fatma Eser Özgenci̇l, Oğuz Kul, Faruk Akin, Kamuran Pamuk
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of the study was to investigate the possibility of using great auricular nerve - facial nerve (GAN-FN) coaptation in the correction of experimentally induced facial paralysis according to clinical, histological and histomorphometrical analysis in dogs. Five mongrel dogs of different age (range 2 to 6 years) and sex (2 male and 3 female) were the study material. Facial paralysis was induced by neurectomy at the side of the facial nerve trunk passing through the stylomastoid foramen. The great auricular nerve (GAN) was freed, neurectomized behind the furcations and transposed to the distal part of the neurectomized facial nerve …

In this study, nitroscanate (Lopatol tablets, Novartis) was tested for its efficacy against Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina and Dipylidium caninum in naturally infected dogs. Dogs that had mixed infections of cestodes and nematodes were divided into two groups: the treatment group (10 dogs) and the control group (5 dogs). Dogs in the treatment group were treated orally with a single dose of 1 tablet/10 kg of nitroscanate (50 mg/kg). After the treatment, fecal samples were examined 5 times at intervals of 2 days and it was recorded that nitroscanate removed D. caninum (4 dogs) and T. leonina (7 dogs) in …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The prevalence and colonization sites of Helicobacter spp. in the stomachs of dogs, and their association with gastric pathology were investigated. Scraping cytology, culture, urease test and histology were used to detect helicobacters in the stomachs of necropsied dogs. Gastric Helicobacter spp. were detected in 103 (84.4%) of 122 dogs from 1 month to 14 years of age. The uncultured spiral organisms seen in the most of stomachs were designated as H. heilmannii. Microscopical examination of stained mucosal scrapings was found to be superior for the diagnosis of gastric helicobacters. Six (4.9%) spiral organisms were isolated from 122 stomachs and …

In 2 cases, pain was present and in 4, swelling was observed in the joint. In the drawer test, in cases positive according to the radiographical examinations, the tibia was placed more cranially than the femur. In 4 cases, swelling was observed radiographically in the medial part of the …

In this study, 30% suspension of barium sulfate (BS) and 1/1 and 1/3 dilated solutions of Na-meglumine diatriozate (NMD) and iohexol (IO) were administered via the naso-gastric trackt to 3 dogs and 3 cats in two different doses, i.e. 5 ml/kg (lower dose) and 10 ml/kg (higher dose). Each application was repeated at 1-week intervals. Radiographs were taken prior to, and at certain intervals after, contract medium (CM) applications. According to the radiographs taken from the BS groups, CM was determined to be distributed unevenly in the stomach and to have a localized and segmented appearance in both the small …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Leishmaniasis is a worldwide, parasitic disease found in the Mediteranean area, Africa, Asia and Central and South America that affects mainly dogs, humans, and rodents. Dogs are the domestic reservoirs of the visceral form so that early detection of canine infections including complex clinical features may be important in the control of lehismaniasis. In this article we compared the clinical and laboratory results of leishmaniasis, which was diagnosed immunologically and histologically in a dog.

A total of 12 dogs were divided equally into 4 groups. After performing experimental tenotomy and tenorraphy of the left achilles tendon, it was covered with an autogenic fascia lata graft in place of the tendon sheath. Only classical tenotomy and tenorraphy were performed on the right achilles tendon as a control. After the operation, the extremities were protected for 21 days by a PVC bandage. Each tendon was injected with 0.5 ml contrast …

In this study, the anaesthetic effects and reliability of the combination of etomidate, which is a non-barbiturate injectable anaesthetic, and alfentanil, which is a strong narcotic analgesic, in anaesthesia induction in dogs were investigated. Twenty dogs were used in this study. Following intramuscular administration of atropine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg, diazepam was given intravenously at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg. Following tranquillisation, etomidate at a dose of 2mg/kg and alfentanil at a dose of 0.02mg/kg were injected intravenously. With this anaesthetic protocol, anaesthesia lasting approximately 15 min was produced. When haematological parameters (haemogram and ALT, AST, BUN, TP, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The cardiovascular/respiratory and clinical effects of a xylazine-ketamine combination or a butorphanol-ketamine combination for the induction of anaesthesia in dogs were compared. A total of 12 dogs (two groups 6 dogs each) were premedicated with either xylazine (group I) or butorphanol (group II) and anaesthetized with ketamine HCl and monitored at 0, 5, 15, 30 and 60 min after induction. Sedative effects in both groups started within 15 min. Respiratory rate was significantly decreased in group I (P < 0.05). Body temperature was significantly altered after 15 min in group I (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001). Haematological analyses indicated that there were no differences in pH values between the groups. It was concluded that butorphanol followed by ketamine was comparable with xylazine plus ketamine for the induction of anaesthesia in healthy dogs.

Forty-seven cutaneous mast cell tumors from dogs were pathologically classified into three grades numbered grade 1 to 3. Age, sex, breed, tumor location, and their histologic grading were tabulated. Luna’s method, Unna’s method, Giemsa, toluidine blue, and alcian blue/safranine stainings were applied in order to compare the diagnosis and prognosis of the tumors. The staining was positive for mast cell tumors by the different methods 64% (30/47), 68% (32/47), 70% (33/47), 72% (34/47), and 81% (38/47), respectively. The accuracy of the staining decreased when the mast cells became poorly differentiated. The alcian blue/safranine stain yielded the greatest number of positives: …

The mass was characterized by an acinar or tubular pattern with mucin in the lumen. The tumor cells were atypical cuboidal pleomorphic columnar epithelial cells with hyperchromatic round medium-sized nuclei …
