The study was aimed at finding out whether dog sperm could be labelled using 99mTc-HMPAO and finding the optimum incubation temperature and amount of 99mTc-HMPAO to label spermatozoa from fresh ejaculates and from frozen-thawed semen. A radiopharmaceutical was prepared by reconstituting 0.5 mg of HMPAO with 5 ml pertechnetate solution containing 100 kBq 99mTc. Semen samples were obtained from three dogs, pooled and divided into aliquots containing 100x106 spermatozoa each. Fresh and frozen-thawed semen samples were used. A male pinscher dog weighing 4.2 kg with a history of intermittent fever, inappetence, weight loss, and weakness occurring periodically for 5 months showed Anaplasma (Ehrlichia) platys inclusions within the platelets of peripheral blood smears. The diagnosis was confirmed using a nested polymerase chain reaction. The dog was treated with doxycycline at a dose of 5 mg/kg twice daily for 21 days. This study is the first case of A. platys infection in Turkey.

The objective of this study was to isolate, identify, and genotype Campylobacter jejuni from various sources in the province of Kayseri, Turkey. A total of 6667 samples consisting of 5167 human fecal swabs, 600 dog rectal swabs, 600 cattle gallbladders, and 300 chicken carcasses were examined. The samples were plated onto mCCDA (cefoperazone charcoal desoxycholate agar) agar. In order to identify C. jejuni, phenotypic tests and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) were performed. C. jejuni was isolated in 1.43%, 43.50%, 31.16%, and 56% of the human, dog, cattle, and chicken samples, respectively. Among the 690 C. jejuni strains that were isolated …

A seroepidemiological study of canine leishmaniasis was carried out in 220 healthy pet dogs from 11 different regions in Bulgaria allocated in 5 regions in southern Bulgaria: Plovdiv (n = 20), Stara Zagora (n = 20), Yambol (n = 20), Burgas (n = 20), and Blagoevgrad (n = 20), and 6 regions in northern Bulgaria: Varna (n = 20), Silistra (n = 20), Rousse (n = 20), Veliko Tarnovo (n = 20), Pleven (n = 20), and Montana (n = 20). An 11-year-old female terrier brought to our clinic was diagnosed with chondroma located on the caudolateral side of the right distal humerus. During the clinical examination of the dog, swelling and lameness were observed on right forelimb. Following the operation, the subject had no lameness after removing the mass. Postoperative follow-up was done by phone with the owner of the patient in 6th and 12th months, and no lameness and swelling in the region was reported. Histopathological Changes After Transplantation Of Stored Osteochondral Allografts Into Articular Cartilage Lesions In Dogs, Zbigniew Adamiak, Wojciech Brzeski

The aim of this study was to evaluate histopathological changes in the recipient site after transplantation of stored osteochondral allografts into articular cartilage defects in 8 dogs. In all dogs a single osteochondral allograft was transplanted into articular cartilage lesions. The results of the completed surgeries include a 12-month follow-up study. It was found that the stored osteochondral allografts were very firmly connected to the recipient tissue and no arthritis changes were noted.

Lyme disease is a zoonotic infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by ticks of the Ixodes species. This is the first clinical case report of Lyme disease in Turkey. The subject was a 2-year-old male Saint Bernard with recurrent shifting leg lameness that began at about 6 months of age. In sera samples, B. burgdorferi IgM, IgG, and Western Blot were found to be positive. Chronic borreliosis was diagnosed and a long-term amoxicillin treatment was recommended. Hemangiosarcoma of the nictitating membrane of two Great Dane dogs is reported. Treatment was successfully carried out by amputation of the nictitan. No recurrence of the mass or pulmonary metastasis was evident within a period of twelve months after the treatment.

288 kidneys complete with renal arteries and abdominal aorta, were collected from 144 dogs (75 males and 69 females), dissected and studied according to the number, branch, length and position of the renal arteries bifurcation. The positions of the left and right renal arteries were also observed. Double renal arteries were noted in 14 of 144 dogs (9.72%) but only on the left side. Single renal arteries had one to six branches. Most kidneys had 2 (39.42%) or 3 (33.58%) branches. The bifurcation mostly occurred in the middle of the renal artery (60.61%). A seroepidemiological study on Ehrlichia canis infection was performed in 16 dogs in a kennel in the region of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. For this purpose, anti-E. canis antibodies were detected by the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test. The results showed that 75% of the dogs examined were positive to E. canis. The antibody titres 1:100, 1:200 and 1:400 were detected.

Systemic candidiasis is a rare disease of animals. In this study, the clinical course, and cultural and pathological findings of systemic candidiasis are described and presumed predisposing factors are investigated in 3 dogs. Pathologically, pyogranulomatous lesions in various organs were present in all dogs. Blastospores, pseudohyphae, and true hyphae of Candida albicans were observed with periodic acid Schiff, Gomori's methenamine silver, and immunohistochemistry. Administrations of broad-spectrum antibiotics and corticosteroids and, in one dog, parvoviral infection were thought to be predisposing factors leading to opportunistic infection. This study was performed to evaluate the use of preserved human amniotic membrane to repair corneal ulcers in 5 eyes of experimental dogs. A 0.45 centimetre, in diameter, trephine was used to create a corneal stroma wound which was later covered with human amniotic membrane and the third eyelid flap for 7 days. After one week, each dog had complete corneal epithelization. Corneal vascularization, photophobia and conjunctivitis and were observed in 1, 4 and 5 dogs, respectively. However, all dogs regained their normal vision.

Cataract surgery was planned on 41 ERG positive eyes of 25 dogs of which 9 had unilateral and 16 had bilateral cataracts. Phacofragmentation and aspiration surgery was performed on 32 eyes of 20 dogs (and ECCE was performed on 4 eyes and ICCE was performed on 5 eyes of 5 dogs) of different breeds, sexes and ages. In this study, the normal incudomalleal (IM) joint surface of dogs was studied by SEM. The animals under the Ketamine + Xylazine (5/2 mg/kg. iv.) anesthesia, were perfused with 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution in 0.1 M sodium potassium phosphate buffer pH 7.2 via left ventricle. Middle ear ossicles were processed with routine histological procedures for SEM and examined under a Philips 505 type SEM. The articular surfaces of malleus and incus showed similar configuration and micromorphology. Two burial chambers dating back to 1000 BC have been brought to light in the Van-Yoncatepe necropolis in Eastern Anatolia. In these two chambers (M5 and M6), plenty of skeletal remains belonging to dogs buried together with humans were discovered. The finds were a dog skeleton lying in-situ in burial chamber M5 and a number of bones scattered in three layers in burial chamber M6. Humeral and femoral circumferences were used to estimate the body weight of these dogs, and the data obtained from these measurements enabled us to further our knowledge of the formats of Van-Yoncatepe dogs. This study includes 6 dogs naturally infected with Dirofilaria immitis of different ages and sexes. Clinical, radiographical, blood gas and blood biochemical evaluations were examined in the preoperative period. Microfilariae were determined in 6 cases with a modified Knott test. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and open-heart surgery were carried out. Animals were prepared for cannulation under general anesthesia. The heart was approached by right lateral thoracotomy. This study presents the results of the analyses of the coprolite material found among the skeletal remains in M6, a burial chamber discovered in the necropolis of the Van-Yoncatepe Castle, which dates back to the beginning of the 1^{st} millennium BC (Early Iron Age). For this purpose, microbiological and parasitological examinations, as well as biochemical analyses have been carried out. The aim of this study was the determination and comparative evaluation of the seroprevalence of Brucella canis infection in dog sera obtained from different dog shelters located in İstanbul and İzmir provinces by tube agglutination test (TAT), 2-mercapto-ethanol tube agglutination test (2ME-TAT) and ELISA. A total of 362 serum samples were obtained from 8 different dog shelters in İstanbul and İzmir provinces. The dogs were temporarily kept in these shelters. Three hundred eighty stray dogs (232 female and 148 male) from İstanbul and İzmir were tested with antigen detecting ELISA for Dirofilaria immitis infection. Blood samples were collected between November 2002 and April 2003. D. immitis infection was found in 4 dogs tested. Seroprevalence among these dogs in İstanbul was 1.52%. Seroprevalence was the highest (2.22%) in the 3-6-year-old age group, followed by 1.02% in the 1-3-year-old age group. However, there was no significant difference between these age groups (P > 0.05). No significant difference between male and female dog groups was observed in İstanbul (P > 0.05). Antigenic specificity was investigated in dogs experimentally infected with Taenia hydatigena using SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. Cysticercus tenuicollis cysts from sheep were given to the puppies in the experimental group. Experimental infection was achieved in the animals of the experimental group at 11-13 weeks, and infected animals were necropsied and mature Taenia hydatigena worms were collected. Our objective was to investigate hepatobiliary functions in healthy dogs using ^{99m}Tc-mebrofenin hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HBS): 200 µCi/kg ^{99m}Tc-mebrofenin was injected intravenously into 12 healthy adult dogs. One-hour dynamic images and 2, 4 and 24 h static images were obtained. HBS was evaluated for 7 variables. Cardiac washout occurred within 3 min in all dogs. A photophenic area in the region of the gall bladder was seen in 3.03 ± 0.21 min. However, bile ducts were not identified as separate structures in any dogs. The results of antigenic characterization of canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV2) isolated from the feces of 60 dogs with hemorrhagic enteritis are reported. Antigenic characterization was carried out by comparing the reactivity pattern of 4 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to CPV2 in the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. CPV2 was detected in 21 out of 60 dogs (35%) and antigenic typing was able to be performed for only 16 dogs with >=1:8 titers. Nine samples were characterized as CPV2a and 7 as CPV2b, indicating that the CPV2a variant was more common than CPV2b in dog populations in Bursa province in Turkey.

Sebaceous Gland Adenoma In A Dog, M. Özgür Özyi̇ği̇t, Ahmet Akkoç, Rahşan Yilmaz

A 14-year-old male cocker spaniel was diagnosed with sebaceous gland adenoma in the right external ear canal. Macroscopically, a whitish nodular mass, 3.1 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm in size, moderate to firm in consistency, was seen. The cut surface of the tumoral mass was solid. In the microscopical examination, the tumoral mass was formed by many lobules composed of 2 types of different cells (basaloid and sebaceous cells). Because of the mass within the external ear canal, the dog had severe otitis externa and problems in hearing.

The present study was performed to investigate the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in dogs, and to evaluate protrusive changes in the mitral valve by echocardiographic examination. Thirty-five dogs were examined, including those observed clinically normal, and animals with suspected cardiac disease displaying lethargy, coughing, dyspnea, exercise intolerance, or syncope. The echocardiographic examination revealed 19 (54.2%) of the dogs to have MVP, whereas 16 (45.7%) had a normal mitral valve. Faecal Carriage Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Stray Dogs In Bursa Province, Turkey, A. Levent Kocabiyik, Cengi̇z Çeti̇n, Cüneyt Özakin

The faecal carriage rate of Listeria monocytogenes in stray dogs in Bursa province, Turkey, was determined from 82 faecal samples by bacteriological methods. L. monocytogenes was isolated from only one (1.22%) of the samples examined. The isolate was serotyped as 1/2b. It was concluded that stray dogs could be a reservoir of the organism as well as a source of human listeriosis in Turkey. This is the first report on the isolation of L. monocytogenes from a dog in this country.

A Serological Evidence Of Minute Virus Of Canines (Mvc; Canine Parvovirus Type-1) In Dogs In Turkey, Serhat Torun, Zeki̇ Yilmaz, Annamaria Pratelli

Serological evidence of minute virus of canines (MVC; canine parvovirus type-1) was investigated for the first time in dogs in Turkey. Dogs with various clinical symptoms including primarily gastrointestinal and respiratory system disorders were used. Immunofluorescence (IF) test was performed to determine whether anti-MVC antibodies were present in the serum samples. MVC antibodies were found in 18 out of 100 dogs (18.0%) tested, indicating that MVC is present in dogs in Turkey. The present result is additional evidence for the worldwide distribution of MVC.

The Estimation Of Glomerular Filtration Rates Using Endogenous Creatinine Clearance In Nine Dogs, Chollada Buranakarl, Wanchai Yenpetch, Siram Suvarnavibhaja

The objective of this study was to estimate the glomerular filtration rates of normal dogs using the clearance of endogenous creatinine, and comparing it to the clearance of exogenous creatinine. Nine healthy dogs, of both sexes, were used in this study. The results showed a significant relationship, with a correlation coefficient = 0.714 (p<0.05). The regression line was an endogenous creatinine clearance = (-0.803 + 0.677) x exogenous creatinine clearance. The use of endogenous creatinine clearance is a simple and convenient method without the need to administer any substances and can be used to evaluate renal function in clinical practice.

The objectives of this experiment were to induce prostate atrophy by ligating prostate vessels and nerves and evaluate the histological changes in the prostates. Animal material consisted of 10 normal (healthy) crossbred dogs. The branches of the prostate artery, prostate veins, prostate innervating nerves, and hypogastric and pelvic nerves were ligated and then cut for each of the dogs under general anesthesia. Three months after surgery, the dogs were euthanased by with an overdose of sodium pentobarbital. A 1-year-old male German Shepherd dog was brought in because its hard palate had been damaged by the left mandibular canine tooth. On inspection of the oral structure, lingual deviation to the interproximal area between the upper canine and lateral incisor of the left mandibular canine tooth and mild palatal trauma were seen. Under radiographic examination no traumatic root lesion or residue from the extracted deciduous teeth was determined. The mandibular canine tooth was corrected using a metal inclined plane.
