A Comparitive Study On Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis And Traumatic Pericarditis In Egyptian Cattle, Mohamed M. Ghanem

This study was carried out on 15 Holstein cows divided into 3 groups of 5. Group 1 was the control, group 2 had traumatic reticuloperitonitis (TRP), and group 3 had traumatic pericarditis (TP). Comparison between the groups included clinical, hematological, biochemical, and ultrasonographic changes. TRP cows had arched backs, a sharp decrease in milk yield, and a reluctance to move, with abduction of the fore limbs. TP cows had edema of the brisket and submandibular region, with jugular vein distension and pulsation. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica from nasal cavities of cattle, and to find antibiotic susceptibility profiles of the isolates. Bilateral nasal swab samples were collected from 47 clinically healthy Holstein cattle, with no history of antimicrobial treatment prior to sampling. Respectively, 5 and 27 isolates were identified as M. haemolytica and P. multocida. Seventeen samples from cattle of 1 year or younger were found to have P. multocida. The clinical and haematological findings in dairy cattle with naturally infected bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) infection were evaluated. Thirty-seven (12.3%) out of 300 cattle that had previously been found positive for BIV infection were monitored. Thirty-seven BIV-free cattle selected from BIV-positive herds were used as a control group. Routine clinical and haematological parameters were recorded 6 times, at 1-month intervals. This study is aimed to detect Coxiella burnetii in cattle by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). A total of 138 cattle blood samples were collected from 8 farms and then examined in laboratory conditions. The examination of Coxiella burnetii was carried out by PCR with specific primers. In this study, a total of 6 (4.3%) cattle serum samples were found PCR positive for Coxiella burnetii. This result proves that cattle are an important reservoir of Coxiella burnetii infection.

This research paper is aimed at estimating foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-induced production losses in individual dairy and fattening cattle in Turkey. The data used were obtained from a Delphi Expert Opinion Survey. The weighted average FMD-induced financial losses for all breeds were estimated to be $294/head for a milking cow, $152/head for a dairy heifer and $197/head for beef cattle. However, the amount of financial loss varied across different breeds, ages, and sexes. The importance of the Escherichia coli O157:H7 translocated intimin receptor (Tir) protein in intestinal colonization and the effect of infection with Tir+ strains on protection against subsequent challenge was studied in adult beef cattle. Cattle were orally inoculated (C1) with a Shiga toxin-2++ E. coli O157:H7 strain that was Tir+ or Tir-, and 42 days later were re-challenged (C2) with the nalidixic acid (Nal) R parent strain to test whether prior infection had any effect on fecal shedding. Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an important food-borne pathogen and cause of hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. Cattle are an important reservoir of E. coli O157:H7, in which the organism colonizes the intestinal tract and is shed in the feces. In this study, 130 Escherichia coli strains isolated from 306 cattle and sheep fecal samples were studied for their resistance to 10 antibiotics, verotoxin production, and hemolyzation. The antibiotic resistance rates of the E. coli strains were as follows: tetracycline, 51.6%; streptomycin, 24.2%; ampicillin, 13.1%; amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, 5.2%; gentamycin, 4.6%; ciprofloxacin, 4.6%; trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, 4.3%; cefotaxime, 0.7%. None of the strains were resistant to cefepime or ceftazidime. Of all the antibiotics tested, only resistance to streptomycin was higher in the strains isolated from cattle than in the sheep strains (P = 0.043). The objective of this study was to isolate, identify, and genotype Campylobacter jejuni from various sources in the province of Kayseri, Turkey. A total of 6667 samples consisting of 5167 human fecal swabs, 600 dog rectal swabs, 600 cattle gallbladders, and 300 chicken carcasses were examined. The samples were plated onto mCCDA (cefoperazone charcoal desoxycholate agar) agar. In order to identify C. jejuni, phenotypic tests and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) were performed. This study was carried out to detect and compare the prevalence of bovine Theileria and Babesia species in the vicinity of Kayseri by microscopic examinations (ME) and reverse line blotting (RLB). A total of 337 cattle usually grazed on pasture in 13 different regions of Kayseri were sampled randomly. Blood samples were collected into tubes containing EDTA from jugular veins. Thin blood smears were prepared from ear capillaries. On microscopic examination of smears, 51 (15.1%) were positive for piroplasms. Enterotoxemia was diagnosed in a 3-year-old cow that died suddenly. Lesions of hemorrhagic enteritis were seen in the small intestine during necropsy. Lethal alpha toxin of Clostridium perfringens was detected in the intestinal contents by toxin neutralization test. C. perfringens type A was isolated from the intestinal contents and typed by multiplex PCR. Enterotoxemia should be considered as a cause of sudden death in cattle in Turkey.

The seroprevalence of Brucellosis in human, sheep, and cattle populations was investigated in rural regions of Kırıkkale in Turkey. Serum samples were obtained from 1436 humans, and 3.2% (46) of the population was found to be positive by Rose Bengal Plate test (RBPT) and 3.0% (43) gave positive results with the standard tube agglutination test (STAT). Immunoglobulin class analysis of RBPT-positive sera using the ELISA test gave positive results for 33 people (75%) with Brucella ELISA IgG and for 11 people (25%) with Brucella ELISA IgM. Although cattle develop humoral immune responses to Shiga-toxigenic (Stx+) Escherichia coli O157:H7, infections often result in long-term shedding of these human pathogenic bacteria. The objective of this study was to compare humoral and cellular immune responses to Stx+ and Stx- E. coli O157:H7. The structures of the canine, rabbit, bovine and equine EIF2AK2 genes were determined. Each of these genes has a 5' non-coding exon as well as 15 coding exons. All of the canine, bovine and equine EIF2AK2 introns have consensus donor and acceptor splice sites. In the equine EIF2AK2 gene, a unique single nucleotide polymorphism that encoded a Tyr329Cys substitution was detected. Regulatory elements predicted in the promoter region were conserved in ungulates, primates, rodents, Afrotheria (elephant) and Insectifora (shrew). Coxiellosis is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. This study conducted to determine the prevalence of coxiellosis in cattle and farmers in Eastern Turkey. A total of 230 cattle and 92 human sera were collected and tested for antibodies against C. burnetii by a commercial ELISA kit. The antibodies to C. burnetii were detected in 22 (9.56%) cattle and 18 (19.5%) healthy farmers. Seropositivity was found in 12 of 53 (22.6%) cattle with an abortion history, and 10 of 177 (5.6%) cattle without an abortion history (P < 0.05). There was a correlation between animal and human seroprevalence in the same district. It was observed that the seroprevalence of coxiellosis was higher in northern districts (32.4% in farmers and 15.4% in cattle) than in other districts (12.1% in farmers and 6.5% in cattle) both for humans and animals (P < 0.05). Coxiellosis was an important health problem in both humans and cattle, and the disease may cause abortion in cattle in Eastern Turkey.

The prevalence of BHV-1 and BLV antibodies was studied in 313 serum samples collected from 5 dairy cattle herds. Serum samples were collected from both apparently healthy animals and animals with respiratory symptoms. The samples were tested for the presence of antibodies against BHV-1 and BLV using virus neutralization and agar gel immunodiffusion test, respectively. The results indicated that the prevalence of BHV-1 and BLV infections was 19.5% and 0.3%, respectively.

The aim of this study was to investigate fasciolosis in a group of eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic cattle in eastern Turkey. All the cattle were examined for antibodies against F. hepatica by modified indirect excretory/secretory enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ES-ELISA). Of the 1200 cattle tested, 164 (13.6%) were found to be eosinophilic by absolute eosinophil counts. Out of the 164 eosinophilic cattle, 121 (73.7%) were found to be positive for fasciolosis by indirect ES-ELISA, while the rate was only 35% among the non-eosinophilic group (P < 0.001). Our data indicate that parasitic infections should be considered an important cause of eosinophilia, particularly in fasciolosis, and the indirect ES-ELISA is useful as a screening test to examine anti-F. hepatica antibodies for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in cattle.

This study was conducted to measure selected haematological parameters in Holstein cattle naturally infected with Theileria annulata. Haematological analysis indicated significant decreases in red blood cell count, haematocrit value, haemoglobin amount, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, and white blood cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil, monocyte, eosinophil, and basophil counts. On the other hand, significant increases were seen in mean corpuscular volume and marked reticulocytosis in infected animals compared to the animals in the control (uninfected) group. This communication reports final observations on experimental transmission of chronic wasting disease (CWD) from mule deer to cattle by the intracerebral route. Thirteen calves were inoculated intracerebrally with brain suspension from mule deer naturally affected with CWD. Three other calves were kept as uninoculated controls. The experiment was terminated 6 years after inoculation. During that time, abnormal prion protein (PrPres) was demonstrated in the central nervous system (CNS) of 5 cattle by both immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Blood samples were collected from 305 cows in the province of Şanlıurfa for determining the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum. Serum samples were analyzed for antibodies against N. caninum antigen using a commercially competitive inhibition (CI) ELISA. Antibodies to N. caninum were found in 23 of the 305 (7.5%) cow sera based on ELISA test results. With regard to seropositivity, no significant difference was observed among the origin, animal breed, and age (P > 0.05).

In this study, it was aimed to examine the urinary system and to determine normal ultrasonographic appearance by rectal ultrasonography in Holstein cows. The study material consisted of 20 bladders, 20 urethras, and 20 right and 20 left kidneys, in 20 Holstein cows. A portable ultrasonograph combined with a 6 MHz linear rectal probe (transducer) was used for the examination. Bladder lumen was determined as an anechoic structure in the ventral aspect of the rectum and its wall was hyperechoic. Immunohistochemical Distribution Of Desmin And Vimentin In The Skin Of Zavot Cattle, Şahi̇n Aslan, Hakan Kocamiş, Mümtaz Nazli, Nurhayat Gülmez

The distribution patterns of desmin and vimentin were determined in Zavot cattle skin using standard immunohistochemical techniques. Skin samples were collected from the different regions of the bodies. Vimentin-immunoreactivity was observed in the cells of subepidermal region, in the myoepithelial cells surrounding sebaceous and sweat glands, in the fibroblast, smooth muscle, endothelial cells of vessels and some hair follicles. Desmin-immunoreactivity was dense in the smooth muscle of arrectores pilorum muscles and bulbus pilorum of the some hair follicles. Desmin and vimentin immunoreactivities were not different among the various regions of Zavot cattle skin.

This study was designed to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis and leptospirosis in aborted dairy cattle. For this purpose, serum samples were collected from 163 aborted dairy cattle that had no history of vaccination against either brucellosis or leptospirosis. The antibodies against B. abortus were detected in these serum samples as 68.1%, 65.6%, 58.9% and 55.2%, respectively by the Competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (C-ELISA), Complement Fixation Test (CFT), Rosebengal Plate Test (RBPT) and Serum Agglutination Test (SAT). In this study, the presence of Arcanobacterium spp., which causes a variety of purulent infections involving the skin, joints and visceral organs, was investigated in abscessed kidney samples of cattle. A total of 500 cattle were examined at postmortem and 100 samples with abscess were collected. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated in 40 (40%) of the samples examined. DNA extracted from the isolates were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using specific primers derived from plo gene of A. pyogenes and all the isolates were determined to be positive by PCR. Five hundred and twelve serum samples collected from randomly selected cattle of different age and sex from the towns and central villages of Hatay during April-July 2003 were tested for antibodies against 3 different Leptospira interrogans serovars (grippotyphosa, hardjo and icterohaemorrhagie) using a microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Forty-five (8.8%) and 72 (14%) of the 512 serum samples tested were detected to be positive with MAT and ELISA, respectively. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. in healthy asymptomatic cows and calves was investigated on 30 farms in Şarkışla in Sivas. The population on these farms consisted of 457 animals: 47 calves 15-45 days old, 48 calves 45-90 days old, 38 calves 90 days-6 months old, 254 calves 6 months-1 year old, 60 cattle 1-3 years old, and 10 cattle 9-15 years old. Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were identified by zinc sulphate flotation technique and modified acid fast stain methods in cattle ranging from 15 days old to adults. Environmental Factors Affecting Milk Yield And Fertility Traits Of Simmental Cows Raised At The Kazova State Farm And Phenotypic Correlations Between These Traits, Süleyman Çi̇lek, Mehmet Emi̇n Teki̇n

The aim of this study was to investigate environmental factors affecting milk yield and fertility traits of Simmental cows raised at the Kazova state farm and the phenotypic correlation between these traits from 1473 records between 1992 and 2001. The least square means of 305-days milk yield, lactation duration, dry period, service period, calving interval, gestation length and number of inseminations per conception (NIPC) were 4700 kg, 300 days, 81 days, 94 days, 379 days, 283.6 days and 1.76, respectively. The effect of calving year on milk yield and fertility traits was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The effect of calving age on gestation length and milk yield was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). The effect of calving season on gestation length, 305-days milk yield and NIPC was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). Birth type did not significantly affect any traits, except for gestation length. The phenotypic correlations between 305-days milk yield and lactation duration (0.39), between NIPC and service period (0.81), between NIPC and calving interval (0.77), between calving interval and service period (0.96) and between calving interval and gestation length (0.12) were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Correlations between milk yield and fertility traits (0.09-0.77) were statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05), except for gestation length. These results are acceptable and it can be concluded that Simmental cattle are raised successfully on this farm and under Turkish conditions.

South Anatolian Red (SAR) cattle are well adapted to the arid, hot and harsh conditions of the region and have the highest milk yield among the local breeds in Turkey. The purpose of this study was to determine the main productive characteristics, such as viability, reproduction and milk production, of F_1, B_1 and F_{1}XB_{1} crossbred genotype groups from Simmental x SAR crossbreeding.
