A hyperdynamic circulatory state is a common consequence of portal vein hypertension. Interestingly, this case report demonstrates acute canine leptospirosis manifesting with abdominal effusion, which it is focused ona hyperdynamic circulatory state, caused by portal hypertension. Severe acute kidney injury caused by leptospirosis in this case was hypothesized to be aggravated by renal hypoperfusion. This condition was noticed to occur in a similar way to hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) in humans. Thirty-one dogs (62 limbs) with hip dysplasia and 17 nondysplastic dogs (34 limbs) were evaluated. The hip dysplasia score was defined according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Granulomas can “mimic” gliomas on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in human patients. The goal of this retrospective study was to report canine brain granulomas that were consistent with glioma based upon MRI, report their histologic diagnosis, and identify MRI criteria that might be useful to distinguish granuloma from glioma. Ten granulomas, initially suspected to be glioma based on MRI, were ultimately diagnosed as granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (n = 5), infectious granulomas (n = 3) or other meningoencephalitis (n = 2). A small pupil and poor pupil dilation are well-known risk factors faced by veterinary ophthalmologists during and after cataract surgery. We here describe two cases of phacoemulsification performed using an iris expander (Visitec I-Ring Pupil Expander, Beaver-Visitec International, USA) for treating cataracts in dogs with small pupils. Using this technique, we performed cataract extraction effectively in dogs with insufficiently dilated pupils. This case report provides useful information on the use of an iris expander for phacoemulsification in eyes with a small pupil, which can be applied in veterinary settings.

The effects of phenylboronic acid (PBA) and boric acid (BA) on the proliferation of canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were investigated. Treatment of PBMCs from mixed breed dogs with PBA or BA (0.05 µg/mL) alone elicited blastogenic responses of 0.478 ± 0.438 and 0.499 ± 0.366, respectively. We observed an additive effect on proliferation when purebred Kangal PBMCs were cultured in a combination of BA (0.001 µg/mL) and the mitogenic lectin concanavalin A (1 µg/mL). Bacteremia is a common complication in hospitalized patients, and intravenous catheterization is a routine intervention in dogs in intensive care units (ICU). This study aimed to investigate bacteria associated with bacteremia in an ICU of a veterinary teaching hospital during 2013-2014. Fifty dogs admitted to the ICU were included in this study. Twenty-four dogs (48.00%) presented bacteremia by blood culture. Bacterial species were identified, including Klebsiella pneumoniae (8/24), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (7/24), Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (3/24), Escherichia coli (2/24), Bacillus sp. A 9-year-old, neutered female Golden Retriever was presented with generalized seizures, abnormal mentation and ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed five separated masses at the left dorsal meninges, caudodorsal cerebellum, right cerebral cortex, olfactory lobe and right occipital lobe. Right rostrotentorial craniectomy was performed to debulk the tumor at the right cerebral cortex. On the basis of histopathological evaluation, the mass was diagnosed as GCTs. A large animal model mimicking the geometries of human treatments is needed to complement existing rodent systems (eg, microbeam) and clarify the physical and biological attributes of GRID. The present study was carried out to evaluate outer membrane protein (OMP)-based relatively simple dot-ELISA assays for the diagnosis of acute canine leptospirosis and to identify the differential expression of leptospiral OMPs for identifying the markers of acute infection, if any. Among 91 canine serum samples screened, 63 samples were found to be positive by MAT. All the samples were tested by OMP-based IgM and IgG dot ELISAs. Involucrin (INV) is a cornified envelope precursor protein that is commonly used as an early stage marker of human terminal keratinocyte differentiation. This research investigated the expression of INV in canine skin tumors using 56 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedding (FFPE) biopsied specimens. The expression of INV was investigated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and RT-PCR. Correlation between INV and Ki-67 was also performed. The malignant tumor groups showed significantly different INV staining scores and Ki-67 positive cells than the normal skin group by IHC (p<0.05). The INV scores of moderately differentiated SCC (MSCC), trichoblastoma (TCB), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and poorly differentiated SCC (PSCC) significantly decreased, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Interestingly, the INV of poorly differentiated SCC disappeared in some specimens. The INV expression in most tumors was found to be inversely proportionate to Ki-67 positive cells. In addition, only SCC regardless of tumor grade without tumor-graded specimens showed an inversely statistically significant difference between the Ki-67 positive cells and INV expression (p<0.0001). In RT-PCR, mRNA expression of the FFPE specimens showed substantial similarity of INV expression as in IHC. It is suggested that the INV expression should be further studied in terms of clinical prognosis in canine cutaneous SCC.

Objective—To investigate molecular mechanisms mediating anti-fibrotic effect of SAHA in the canine cornea using an in vitro model. We hypothesized that SAHA attenuates corneal fibrosis by modulating Smad-dependent and, to a lesser extent, Smad-independent signaling pathways activated by TGF-β1, as well as matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity.
