Nutrient Digestibility, Performance, And Egg Quality Traits Of Quails Raised In Different Stocking Densities And Ascorbic Acid Supplementation In A Hot, Tropical Environment, Adi Ratriyanto, Firmanda Firmanda, Heni Purwanti, Murjoko Murjoko
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study investigated the effects of stocking density (SD) and ascorbic acid (AA) supplementation on nutrient digestibility and laying performance of quails in a tropical environment. Four hundred and eight Japanese quails were designated in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with four replicates. The birds were distributed to three SDs, namely 40 (SD-1), 45 (SD-2), and 50 birds per m2 (SD-3) by allotting 15, 17, and 19 birds per cage, respectively (cage size: 3750 cm2). Each SD was supplemented with AA (0 and 250 mg/kg). Interaction was identified between SD and AA on egg production (P < 0.01), while the highest value was yielded in SD-2 supplemented with AA (83.6%). SD-3 achieved lower ether extract (EE) and crude fiber (CF) digestibility (P < 0.05) and eggshell thickness (P = 0.01) than SD-1 or SD-2. AA supplementation enhanced dry matter (DM), EE, CF, crude ash (CA), and calcium (Ca) digestibility (P < 0.05). AA improved egg weight, feed conversion, and protein and energy efficiency ratios as well as eggshell weight and thickness (P < 0.05). The SD of 45 birds per m2, combined with AA supplementation at 250 mg/kg, can be recommended for quails housed in hightemperature environments.

Using alternative feedstuffs to replace corn and soybean in domestic poultry diets, as agroindustry by-products, may reduce production costs. Corn gluten meal is a by-product resulting of corn processing to obtain oil and starch. Aiming to evaluate the use of this ingredient in rooste's diet and its effects on sperm characteristics, 40 roosters with 68 to 72 weeks of age, randomly distributed in individual boxes, were tested. Two treatments were used: treatment 1 (control) - with corn and soybean meal, and treatment 2 - with 10% of corn gluten meal in the diet. Semen collection and body weight verification were …

Strongylus vulgaris (S. vulgaris) is known as the equin's most pathogenic nematode due to the extraintestinal migration in mesenteric arterial vessels. Since a few kinds of S. vulgaris can threat the animals' health and working efficiency, high precision and early detection of strongylid nematodes is essential. Traditionally, the larval coproculture method was used frequently for identification of strongylid species. The technique of larval culture is costly, time consuming, and does not have sufficient accuracy and reliability. Here, we critically evaluated the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with larval culture methods for the detection of S. vulgaris eggs in fecal samples. To …
Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (Esßl), Ampc And Carbapenemase Activities Andcolistin Resistance Of Salmonella Spp. Isolated From Food Poisoning Cases In Turkey, Si̇bel Kizil
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study aims at detecting antimicrobial resistance properties including extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC, carbapenemase activities (imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem), and colistin resistance of isolated and serotyped Salmonella spp. strains from various foods (mostly chicken and chicken products) that cause food poisoning. The ISO 6579-3 (Kaufmann-White scheme) method was used for serotyping of Salmonella spp. and for detection of antimicrobial resistance with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) as reported by EURL-AR. Inoculums were separated into EUVSEC and EUVSEC2 panels using the Sensititre AIM Automated Inoculation Delivery System. The results were monitored in a semiautomatic vision reader and evaluated according to EUCAST. …

The reproductive trait of livestock is part of the most important economic traits in animal husbandry. FecB is a major gene for multiplet traits in sheep. However, studies on FecB in lamb are not clear and comprehensive. The 1-month ewe lamb of F1 generation cross between Booroola Merino sheep and Xinji fine wool sheep was superovulated. Transcriptome sequencing was performed on ovarian granulosa cells of the FecB gene wild homozygous type (++ genotype) and FecB gene mutant heterozygous type (B+ genotype). We found 306 DEGs in the ovarian granulosa cells of the two genotype (170 genes more highly in B+ …

Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) play a key role in the pathogenesis of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA). Limited attempts have been made to inhibit LPS absorption during SARA. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impacts of oral usage of activated charcoal and zeolite on serum LPS and acute phase proteins (APPs) levels in lambs with SARA. Fifteen lambs were randomly assigned to 3 groups, each containing 5 lambs: control, activated charcoal, and zeolite. In all groups, SARA was induced for 7 days through increasing the crushed corn ration to 52.8% and reducing the rumen pH to the range of 5.7-5.6. In …

Biosecurity (BS) is a multidimensional preventive medicine approach that has health, technical, and financial aspects. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences of the BS scores belonging to the livestock enterprises depending on the geographical region and breeding types and to predict the socioeconomic factors having an impact over the BS level. The study was conducted with 517 breeders who live in 7 different regions of Turkey. The results have revealed that the enterprises performing "beef cattle fattening and dairy cattle breeding together" have higher BS scores than the enterprises in the other breeding category (P < 0.01). The differences between the technical and financial scores according to geographical regions were statistically significant (P < 0.01). The regions categorized as "wes" have the highest score and "south" have the lowest score. It was determined that as the "educational level of the breeder" and "enterprise scale" increased, the BS score significantly went up. The regression model was found significant as a whole (P < 0.01) and the independent variables explained the variation in the technical and financial BS scores to be 14.6% and 12.7%, respectively. Dissemination of education/training practices and increasing enterprise scales will positively affect the level of BS in the sector.

This study aimed to investigate the potential cytotoxic effects and phenolic contents of aqueous (HTS) and methanolic (HTM) extracts of Holothuria tubulosa gathered from Muğla (Turkey) against different cancer cells for the first time. An MTT assay was carried out to determine cellular viability. Apoptotic cell death was determined using flow cytometry. DNA fragmentation assay and caspase-3 activity analysis were carried out. Both extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for quantification of phenolic compounds. Both HTS and HTM extracts generally caused a decrease in the cell viability in a concentration- and timedependent manner. The lowest IC$_{50}$ value …
