Infrared thermography pictorially represents the surface temperature of an object. It is a noninvasive method for detecting superficial inflammation and thus can be used in lameness diagnosis. Thermography is prone to artifacts, and, consequently, this has led some people to doubt its clinical applicability. With experience and care in interpretation, thermography can be a useful method for lameness evaluation. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the electrical conductivity (EC) method on the diagnosis of subclinical mastitis in dairy cows comparing with somatic cell count (SCC) and California mastitis test (CMT), and also to investigate the effect of these values on the amount of total viable bacteria, density, freezing point, and mineral substances. A total of 386 milk samples collected from quarters of 188 cows at 10 different farms were used as materials. In this case, a caesarean section was performed on 2 red deer aged 4 and 7 who underwent dystocia. When the deer were brought to our clinic, they had been in labour for 6 h and 1 day, respectively, and the calves were dead. The foetal forefeet were found hanging from the vulva at the general examination. Deer 1's parturition was human-assisted but the outcome was not good and it was decided to operate on the animal. A 4-year old, primiparous, female Anatolian Shepherd dog was presented for evaluation of type II vaginal prolapse with alopecia of the left perineal skin. Hematological analyses demonstrated leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia. Estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) levels were 156 pg/mL and 2.3 ng/mL, respectively. The vaginal smear was predominantly (at least 80%) made up of anuclear superficial cells. An abdominal ultrasonography revealed a heterogeneous multicystic mass with anechoic areas adjacent to the caudal pole of the left kidney. An ovariohysterectomy was performed. The patient in this study was a 20-year-old thoroughbred gelding. After clinical and radiographical assessments, a bilateral rostral mandibular body fracture was determined. Fracture stabilization was achieved via a bilateral interfragmentary cerclage wire application. The horse started to use its jaw within 24 h of surgery. Postoperative radiographs were taken until month 6, at different periods, and fracture healing was evaluated. Fixation materials were left in place. Fracture healing occurred with a rostral part malocclusion. The purpose of this study was to give clinical information about mandibular fractures and treatment of these fractures in a horse.

The first report of an unusual anal atresia with growth of ectodermal organs (wool and skin) in the shape of the intestine inside the body is provided here. During reconstructive surgery, a rectum-like structure was noted, in which wool strands grew densely. A hypothetical mechanism by which this structure formed is presented on the basis of local alterations in fetal tissue proliferation and rate of development.

In this report, congenital lymphoma of B-cell lineage in a Brown Swiss calf is described. A large mass was seen on the head of the calf at birth. At necropsy, multiple masses were found on the skin and internal organs. A histopathological examination showed atypical lymphoid cells separated by connective tissue. None of the tumor cells showed a positive reaction to CD3, but the cells were immunopositive for CD79\alphacy. A CD45+ reaction confirmed a hematopoietic origin of the neoplasm. In order to determine the seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in suspected dogs in Minnesota, the present study examines the database of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Minnesota over a 10 year period (2001-June 2010). A total of 1081 serum samples from dogs suspected of having borreliosis were submitted by 112 private veterinary clinics. The samples were tested using an indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Samples with titers of =>1:320 were considered positive. The rate of seroprevalence of antibodies was 88%. Inclusion body hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (IBH-HPS) in broilers is caused by an adenovirus, here referred to as inclusion body hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome virus (IBH-HPSV). This study describes the immune status of broiler chickens experimentally inoculated with an isolate of fowl adenovirus-4 serotype-1, involved in IBH-HPS in various trials. When compared with the unchallenged controls, IBH-HPSV-inoculated broilers had significantly higher atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius (BF) by up to 2-fold, as well as of the thymus (up to 9-fold) and spleen (up to 1.5-fold) (P < 0.05), with up to 60% mortality. Upon challenge with sheep red blood cells (SRBCs), IBH-HPSV-inoculated birds had from 2- to 3-log lower anti-SRBC antibody titers than the control. Response to phytohemagglutinin-P (PHA-P) was significantly reduced in IBH-HPSV-inoculated birds (P < 0.05) as compared to the control. Results of the studies revealed that the immune status of broilers is compromised significantly during IBH-HPSV infection in terms of lymphoid organ integrity, humoral, and cell-mediated immune responses, respectively. These findings suggest that immune dysfunction could be a contributing factor in the increased mortality of birds affected by IBH-HPS, which renders the birds immunosuppressed for the rest of their lives.

The quality properties of probiotic yogurt samples made with banana marmalade (BM), which can be a probiotic product, were examined. Yogurt samples were produced from cow milk inoculated with yogurt cultures and probiotic cultures (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and an equal mixture of the 2 strains), and then 15% BM was added to each yogurt sample. Acidity, pH, bacteria counts, and sensory analysis of the yogurt samples were investigated on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 during storage at 4 °C. This study was carried out to assess the nutritive value of summer fruits and vegetable residues (FVR) as ruminant feed. Samples of FVR were collected from the central terminal of Karaj in different summer months and homogenized before being analyzed for chemical composition. In situ degradability was determined, as were in vitro and in vivo digestibility. The results of chemical composition analysis for a period of 3 months showed significant differences in terms of dry matter (DM), Pb, and Mn contents. The aim of the present study was to examine the survival and growth performance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) in water with different pH values. Carp (17.8 ± 1.21 cm; 52.14 ± 7.13 g) were transferred to 21 tanks previously adjusted with 7 different pH values: 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of progesterone (PRID) application and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) injection after artificial insemination on serum progesterone concentration and pregnancy rates in repeat breeder cows. Fertile eggs were obtained from a commercial flock of Ross broiler breeders (51 weeks old) and candled to determine the presence of hairline or star cracks. Eggs (5400 total) were assigned in equal numbers to 3 treatments (hairline-cracked, star-cracked, and normal eggs) and incubated for 21 days. Upon hatching, 10 chicks per treatment were euthanized, and organ weights were measured. Compared with normal eggs, the presence of egg shell cracks (regardless of type) resulted in higher egg weight loss at the time of transfer; a decrease in hatchability, hatch of fertile eggs, chick length, yolk-free body mass (P < 0.01), and percentage of hatchling breast and liver weight (P < 0.05); and an increase in the contamination rate of eggs (P < 0.01). Weight loss in hairline-cracked eggs was significantly higher than in star-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Percentage hatchability and body weight of chicks hatched from star-cracked eggs was higher than in chicks from hairline-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Crack type did not have a significant effect on chick length and body weight uniformity; however, the Pasgar score as a quality indicator was higher in chicks hatched from star-cracked eggs than those from hairline-cracked eggs (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments in terms of heart and small intestine weight. The contamination rate of hairline-cracked eggs was higher than that of star-cracked (P < 0.01). A higher incidence of embryonic mortality was observed during days 1-8 of incubation for shell-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Total embryonic mortality in hairline-cracked, star-cracked, and normal eggs was 51.1%, 36.6%, and 13.3%, respectively. This study showed that egg shell cracks reduced incubation parameters and chick quality. The negative effects of hairline cracks were more pronounced than those of star cracks.

The effect of maternal undernutrition on muscle development of near-term ovine fetuses was studied in 2 experiments. In each experiment, Welsh mountain ewes were randomly assigned to either control (C) or nutrient-restricted (R) groups. In the first experiment, mild maternal undernutrition (85% of daily nutritional requirement (DNR)), and in the second experiment, severe maternal undernutrition (50% of DNR), were imposed between 0 and 70 days of gestation (dg). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Escherichia coli O157 in retail red meat and meat products with the Vitek Immunodiagnostic Assay System, including H7 Escherichia coli phage technology (VIDAS ECPT), and a real-time polymerase chain reaction system (LightCycler PCR; LCPCR). A total of 106 red meat and meat product samples were analyzed with VIDAS ECPT and LCPCR. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in preeclampsia/eclampsia have not been elucidated. This study investigated the effect of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures on the functional and structural properties of the BBB during N (omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertension and proteinuria in pregnant rats. Animals were treated with L-NAME for 10 days, beginning on day 10 of pregnancy. The BBB permeability was determined by measurements of sodium fluorescein (NaFlu) extravasation into the brain. Occludin and aquaporin (AQP)-4 immunoreactivities were evaluated in brain sections. Severe proteinuria and significantly increased arterial blood pressure were observed following L-NAME treatment. Milk and dairy products are frequently contaminated with exterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus, which is often involved in Staphylococcal food poisoning. The aim of the present study is to investigate the presence of classical enterotoxins of S. aureus in raw milk that was produced in Isfahan, Iran. For this purpose, 72 milk samples were collected from the bulk milk tanks of 12 milking farms during 3 different seasons (winter, spring, and summer) and tested for the presence of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The present report records the simultaneous occurrence of ischnoceran lice Columbicola phoenicopterae and Coloceras setosum on the Yellow-legged Green Pigeon in India. The prevalence, intensity of infestation, range of infestation, and nature of the antennal sensilla of these 2 species on 12 of these pigeons have also been recorded.

This research was conducted to estimate variance components and genetic parameters for type traits and milk yield in Holstein-Friesian cattle. In this study, 597 daughters of 158 sires in 128 herds were classified. In the data analysis, type scores for 354 daughters bred within 70 herds sired by 46 sires that had at least 3 daughters, and 304 lactation records for 206 daughters within 56 herds sired by 37 sires, were considered. The aim of this study was to determine egg consumption habits in Turkey. Questionnaires prepared to determine habits regarding egg consumption were supplied to 2241 families. Sampling sizes and sample addresses were provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute. Data obtained through the questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS. Of the families that participated in the study, 98% consume eggs and the number of eggs consumed per person was 158 per year. The effects of 3 levels of commercial Aspergillus meal prebiotic (Fermacto®) in broiler diets with 2 levels of dietary crude protein (CP) on the growth performance, carcass characteristics, apparent ileal digestibility of CP and organic matter (OM), and serum lipid profile were evaluated using 240-day-old broiler chickens as a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design. Postmortem spermatozoa recovery is an important tool for harvesting germplasm from genetically meritorious animals and endangered species. The principal motive of this study was to find out whether ram spermatozoa within epididymides kept at 4 °C for 48 h retain their quality in terms of progressive motility, viability, and acrosomal status. Twenty-four testicles with attached epididymides were collected with 8 samples each processed at 0, 24, and 48 h of storage. A good number of motile spermatozoa could be recovered from epididymides by incision method with up to 48 h of storage, although their quality declined significantly (P < 0.05) as postmortem storage time increased (motility: 83.33 ± 1.05%, 63.33 ± 2.47%, and 44.17 ± 1.53%; and epididymal sperm output (millions): 3500.00 ± 73.97, 1220.00 ± 1.01, and 666.67 ± 19.78 for 0 (control), 24, and 48 h, respectively). Viability and intact acrosomes (%) were also acceptable, although they decreased significantly with up to 24 h of storage. In conclusion, ram epididymides could be stored at 4 °C for 48 h when epididymal spermatozoa cannot be immediately harvested and cryopreserved.
