Recent research has shown the possibility of pain perception in fish; therefore, the use of analgesia or “painkillers” should be considered for invasive procedures. However, there is relatively little information on the effectiveness of analgesic drugs nor on the appropriate dose for fish. This study assessed the efficacy of three types of drug: an opioid, buprenorphine, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), carprofen and a local anaesthetic, lidocaine. Each drug was tested at three doses on rainbow trout that were noxiously stimulated and the most effective dose was also given to fish experiencing no pain to investigate side-effects. The origin of dogs came from the limited number of founders leading to inbreeding or genetic diseasewithin or among breeds. Thai Ridgeback (TR) and Bangkaew (BK) dogs were the only native dog breeds that webelieved to originate in Thailand. The study of genetic variability in Thai dogs (39 Thai Ridgeback dogs, 82 Bangkaewdogs) was defined by using 12 microsatellite markers. These DNA markers were highly informative and distributedthrough the canine genome. The result from these markers revealed the higher number of alleles, observedheterozygosity (Ho), expected heterozygosity (He) and polymorphic information content (PIC) in TR and BK dogs.The average Ho, He …

The glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) found in the mammalian oviductal tissue and luminal secretory fluidinfluence the fertilization processes in various patterns such as sperm storage, viability and capacitation. The aim ofthis study was to confirm the appearance of hyaluronan and syndecan-1 in the swamp buffalo oviduct consisting ofuterotubal junction (UTJ), isthmus, ampulla and infundibulum during oestrous cycle using histochemical andimmunohistochemical techniques. The non-sulphated GAGs, i.e. hyaluronan (HA), were noticeably localized in thesubepithelial connective tissue layer or lamina propria of all segments while the epithelial HA-positive staining wasdemonstrated only in the UTJ and isthmus (sperm reservoir) at the follicular phase. Immunoprecipitation and subsequent mass spectrometry analysis of the cellular proteins from cells expressing the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) P protein identified the poly(C) binding protein 2 (PCBP2) as one of the P protein-interacting proteins. To investigate the role of PCBP2 in the viral life cycle, we examined the effects of depletion or overexpression of this protein on VSV growth. Small interfering RNA-mediated silencing of PCBP2 promoted VSV replication. Conversely, overexpression of PCBP2 in transfected cells suppressed VSV growth. Further studies revealed that PCBP2 negatively regulates overall viral mRNA accumulation and subsequent genome replication. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP), characterized by hepatic microvesicular steatosis, is a sudden catastrophic illness occurring almost exclusively in the third trimester of pregnancy. Defective fatty acid oxidation in the fetus has been shown to be associated with this disease. Since the placenta has the same genetic makeup as the fetus and as AFLP patients generally recover following delivery, we hypothesized that the placenta might be involved in pathogenesis of this disease. In an animal model of hepatic microvesicular steatosis (using sodium valproate), we found that microvesicular steatosis results in mitochondrial structural alterations and oxidative stress in subcellular organelles …

Endometrial matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are extensively studied in humans. However, owing to thedistinct differences of the estrous cycle of bitches, the expression and activities of endometrial MMPs regulated by sexhormones should be significantly different. To understand the effect of sex hormones on the activity of MMPs, thisstudy investigates the activities of endometrial MMP-2 and MMP-9 during different phases of the estrous cycle inbitches through the use of gelatine zymography. Microarray containing 13319 probes was used to construct gene expression profiles in order to screendifferentially expressed genes of muscle tissues in Rugao chicken and investigate the molecular mechanism relatedwith muscle tissue traits at 2 and 12 weeks old of chicken. Two hundred and eight differentially expressed genes, ofwhich 108 were known genes, 94 up-regulated, 114 down-regulated were involved in growth, molecular mechanism,fat metabolism, cell proliferation, transcription and splicing factor, protein synthesis and degradation. To determine the seroprevalence of caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus infection (CAEV) in goats in theWestern part of Thailand, a cross-sectional serological survey was conducted in three provinces, Ratchaburi,Petchaburi and Kanchanaburi, situated in the western part of the country along the border area. Eleven multiparous crossbred lactating sows were used to determine the influence of deficient protein dietcontaining 8.2% crude protein and normal protein diet containing 18.2% crude protein on plasma amino acidconcentrations of sows and their piglets, physical mammary gland and histological changes of mammary cells. Theywere provided sufficient water and feed access to one of two isocaloric diets, either deficient (6 sows) or normalprotein diets (5 sows). The experimental period started from farrowing (day 0) until weaning day (day 28). Virus infection requires the interaction of a virus protein with the host-cell receptor. The Influenza A virusreceptor consists of sialic acid linked to the galactose unit in a α 2,3 or α 2,6 conformation. Various types of thesereceptors are expressed differently on the epithelial lining of various animal species. Here we characterized the typesof receptors that are expressed in the upper and lower respiratory tracts of cow, buffalo, pig and quail. The prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis was investigated in diseased swine in Hunan Province, China betweenFebruary 2007 and February 2011. A total of 385 diseased swine dissected in prosectorium from 10 representativeadministrative regions in Hunan Province were examined for the presence of E. faecalis. Forty-two out of 385 (10.91%)diseased swine were found to be infected with E. faecalis by bacteria isolations. E. faecalis was mainly recovered fromthe lung and joint cavity. Identification of the organisms was based on biochemical assays and sequencing of thepartial 16S rRNA. Asian elephant is indigenous to many countries including Thailand, but fermenter microorganisms ingastrointestinal tract of the elephant have not fully been investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to observe thecellulolytic bacteria in Genus Ruminococcus in large intestines of captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Fecalsamples were collected from male and female sucklings, young and adult captive Asian elephants. Forty-fourelephants were divided into 3 groups as followed: A) > 18 years old (n=24); B) 2-18 years old (n=17) and C) < 2 yearsold (n=3). The results revealed that there were 214 (42.8%) isolates of R. flavefaciens, 105 (21.0%) isolates of R. bromii, 90(18.0%) isolates of R. obeum, 54 (10.8%) isolates of R. callidus and 37 (7.4%) isolates of R. albus from all fecal samplesexamined. Interestingly, Ruminococcus strains could be isolated from the weaned elephants, but were not found in thesucklings (p<0.05). In conclusion, cellulolytic bacteria in Genus Ruminococcus were isolated from the large intestines ofcaptive Asian elephants. Moreover, the highest prevalence of the bacteria was found in the elephants aged more than18 years old.

The objectives of this study were to analyze the potential impact of heat stress on reproduction in differentregions of Thailand, to determine the monthly distribution of calving throughout the year and to investigateenvironmental sources of variation of days-open (DO) in first lactation dairy cows. Data including 13,548 lactationrecords were collected during 2004 to 2006. Between 2005 and 2008, swine salmonellosis was confirmed in 430 of 2,707,402 (0.02%) swine atslaughterhouses. All isolates were identified as deriving from Salmonella Choleraesuis, biotype Choleraesuis (negativefor H2S production). We used 30 bacterial strains from 15 farms that had experienced outbreaks in 2006 and 2007. Allstrains were susceptible to various antibiotics such as cephems (cefotaxime), fluoroquinolones (norfloxacin andciprofloxacin), and fosfomycin. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Roselle calyx in two preparation forms in layerdiets on egg production performance, egg quality and TBARS value in plasma and yolk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Equex STM Paste on goat semen quality aftercryopreservation. Semen samples were consecutively collected once a week, from six mature bucks. The semensamples with adequate motility (>60%) and sperm concentration (>1,500x106 sperm/ml) were frozen in an egg yolk-Tris semen extender supplemented either with (E+) or without (E-) Equex STM Paste. Background: Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is a severe chronic respiratory disease affecting horses worldwide, though mostly in the Northern hemisphere. Environmental as well as genetic factors strongly influence the course and prognosis of the disease. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) causes late-term abortion in sows and pneumonia in growing piglets. PRRSV evades the host immune response by several mechanisms, including the modulation of cytokine secretions in infected pigs, which is the subject of this dissertation. Particularly, PRRSV reduces the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) but increases the secretion of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10). The latter effect, however, is PRRSV strain-specific. In this dissertation, we have examined mechanisms by which PRRSV regulates TNF-α and IL-10 expressions. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an infectious agent of significant concern to the global swine industry. PRRSV infection of pigs is initiated by a long viremia after which the virus enters in an extended persistent phase of 3-4 months that ultimately is resolved by the immune system. The delayed and weak host adaptive response is responsible for the protracted convalescence period. Viruses usurp host cell pathways for different stages of their infection. Understanding virus-host interaction will be invaluable to elucidate molecular mechanisms of virus infection and to identify drug targets. In order to identify such critical cellular genes in vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV, a model non-segmented negative strand RNA virus) infection, we developed a stable cell line constitutively expressing replication proteins of VSV. Glutaredoxin 2 (Grx2) belongs to the oxidoreductase family and is an isozyme of glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1) present in the mitochondria, however its function is not well understood. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential anti-apoptotic function of Grx2 by examining its ability to protect complex I in the mitochondrial electron transport system using human lens epithelial cells as a model. We found that cells treated with 200 μM hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 24 h exhibited decreased viability and became apoptotic with corresponding Bax up-regulation, Bcl-2 down-regulation, caspase 3 activation and mitochondrial cytochrome c leakage.
