Here we report the results of an investigation into the possibility that one mechanism responsible for the establishment of persistent human immunodeficiency virus infection is an early regulatory T (Treg) cell response that blunts virus- specific responses. Using the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)–infected rhesus macaque model, we show that, indeed, viral replication and immune activation in lymphatic tissue drive a premature immunosuppressive response, with dramatic increases in the frequencies of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ Treg cells, transforming growth factor–β1+ cells, interleukin–10+ cells, and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase+CD3+ cells. When we compared SIV infection with rhesus cytomegalovirus (RhCMV) …

Power Analysis For A Mixed Effects Logistic Regression Model, Yinmei Li
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In herd health studies, the mixed effects logistic regression model with random herd effects are commonly used for modeling clustered binary data. These models are well developed and widely used in the literature, among which is the logistic-normal regression model. In contrast to the rich literature in modeling methods, the sample size/power analysis methods for such mixed effects models are sparse. The sample size/power analysis method for the logistic-normal regression model is not readily available. This study is to develop a power analysis/sample size estimation method for the logistic-normal regression model. Extended from the sample size method for the likelihood …

Effects Of Dietary Fluoride Levels On Growth, Serum Indexes And Antioxidant Systems In Growing Pigs, Xin Tao, Zi Rong Xu, Yi Zhen Wang
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Ninety-six growing pigs were used to evaluate the effects of fluoride levels on growth performance, serum indexes and antioxidant systems. Four dietary treatments were formulated by supplementing fluorine (as NaF) to provide the following added fluorine levels: 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that pigs consuming diets with 100 and 150 mg/kg fluorine added had poor growth performance, and most serum biochemical indexes were significantly altered compared to the control (P < 0.05). On the other hand, serum and liver MDA concentration significantly increased due to the addition of 150 mg/kg fluorine (P < 0.05). T-AOC levels and the activities of SOD, GSH-PX, CAT and GST of serum and liver in fluoride added groups decreased, most of which altered significantly (P < 0.05). These results indicated that excessive fluoride ingestion had an adverse effect on animal health and performance.

The objectives of this study were to identify staphylococci isolated from different animal clinical samples, to examine some of the virulence factors in the isolates, to determine relationships between these virulence factors and coagulase positive Staphylococcus (CoPS)/coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) strains. A total of 180 strains of Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from bovine mastitis, dogs with otitis externa and chickens with various infections. The isolates were identified as S. aureus (29.4%), S. hyicus (16.7%), S. intermedius (3.9%), S. chromogenes (16.1%), S. lentus (13.3%), S. epidermidis (11.1%), S. simulans (7.8%) and S. haemolyticus (1.7%). The rate of positiveness for deoxyribonuclease (DNase) …
The Effect Of Dietary Oils In Prevention Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid-Induced Embryo Mortality In Fertile Eggs From Artificially Inseminated Chickens, Rahi̇m Aydin
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) decreases the ratio of unsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids (UFA/SFA) in yolk and induces embryo mortality in fertile chicken eggs. The objective of this study was to determine if oils rich in UFA would prevent CLA-induced changes in the yolk fatty acid composition and embryo mortality in the fertile eggs. Each diet supplemented with 0.5% corn oil (Group A), 0.5% CLA (Group B), 0.5% CLA plus 10% canola oil (Group C), 0.5% CLA plus 10% olive oil (Group D) or 0.5% CLA plus 10% corn oil (Group E) was fed to 12 laying hens per …

This study was carried out to determine the effects of genotype, cage density and position on the pullet performance of commercial layer chicks housed in cages. Two thousand 1-day-old chicks of Lohman Brown, Lohman White, Isa Brown and Bowans White genotype were housed at 3 cage densities (105.9, 134.8, 185.3 cm^2/bird from day 1 to 4 weeks of age; 211.8, 274.5 and 370.6 cm^2/bird at 4 to 16 weeks of age) and 3 cage positions (top, middle and bottom rows of the battery). Brown egg layer genotypes were heavier, more uniform and gained more weight with less feed. White egg …
