Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The pineal gland is a part of the photo-endocrine system. Photon energy is important for the function of this system, and affects the level of nocturnal melatonin. In mammals light-induced suppression of melatonin production is dependent on the intensity and wavelength of the light used. We studied the chronic effects of light wavelengths on the pineal gland in rats after exposure to a short photoperiod using 3 different light spectra with the same irradiance. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The animals were divided into 5 groups. They were exposed 8/16 L:D periods in rooms under automatically regulated light and climate. …

The effects of melatonin on hyaluronidase activity of semen and spermatozoa motility of Holstein bulls were investigation in vitro. Semen samples were divided into 5 equal parts and incubated (v/v) with melatonin at the doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM for 60 min. Percentages of spermatozoa motility, morphological abnormality and hyaluronidase activity of semen were determined at 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 min during incubation. Results show that melatonin caused a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in the spermatozoa motility, while causing a significant increase in the hyaluronidase activities of the semen. However, there was no significant difference in the percentages of abnormal spermatozoa when compared with control samples. Doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM of melatonin in bull semen decreased the percentage of spermatozoa motility in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The mean percentages of abnormal spermatozoa were not affected by melatonin treatment. However, it caused an increased hyaluronidase activity of bull semen. In conclusion, the existence of melatonin in bull semen has a significant effect on fertilization ability by affecting spermatozoa motility and hyaluronidase activity.

Identification Of Vibrio Anguillarum By Pcr (Rpon Gene) Associated With Vibriosis In Marine Fish In Turkey, Di̇dem Demi̇rcan, Akin Candan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The main causative agent of vibriosis is Vibrio anguillarum. In this study, 33 V. anguillarum strains were isolated from the internal organs of marine fish showing typical clinical signs of vibriosis, and these strains were identified by biochemical tests. For comparison of these results, API 20E and BIONOR Mono-Va agglutination kits were used. Finally strains were amplified by PCR using the rpoN gene. Although the phenotypic properties of V. anguillarum strains varied, the rpoN gene from chromosomal DNA was amplified in all strains. In conclusion, this gene could be used in the diagnosis of V. anguillarum strains isolated in Turkey.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to investigate fasciolosis in a group of eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic cattle in eastern Turkey. All the cattle were examined for antibodies against F. hepatica by modified indirect excretory/secretory enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ES-ELISA). Of the 1200 cattle tested, 164 (13.6%) were found to be eosinophilic by absolute eosinophil counts. Out of the 164 eosinophilic cattle, 121 (73.7%) were found to be positive for fasciolosis by indirect ES-ELISA, while the rate was only 35% among the non-eosinophilic group (P < 0.001). Our data indicate that parasitic infections should be considered an important cause of eosinophilia, particularly in fasciolosis, and the indirect ES-ELISA is useful as a screening test to examine anti-F. hepatica antibodies for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in cattle.

Metabolism and growth trials were conducted to study true digestible methionine (tMet) and lysine (tLys) requirements for growing Lohmann egg-type cockerels and to evaluate the effects of 2 dietary tMet levels and 4 tLys levels in a factorial arrangement on growth, nitrogen balance and serum biochemical indices. In the metabolism trial, 20 caecectomised and anus-stitch-surgery healthy adult male birds were used to determine the true digestibility of Met and Lys. In the growth trial, 30 Lohmann egg-type cockerels were allocated to each of 32 floor pens (total 960 birds). During the 0-6 week starting period, 2 levels of tMet (0.37, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A seroepidemiological study on Ehrlichia canis infection was performed in 16 dogs in a kennel in the region of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. For this purpose, anti-E. canis antibodies were detected by the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test. The results showed that 75% of the dogs examined were positive to E. canis. The antibody titres 1:100, 1:200 and 1:400 were detected.

Adjustment factors of lactation milk yield to mature age and 305-day were calculated and heritability and repeatability of milk yield were estimated for Simmental cows reared on Kazova State Farm. A total of 1549 lactation records of Simmental cows reared on Kazova State Farm between 1992 and 2002 were used. The factors for standardizing incomplete lactations to 305-day were estimated by taking 7 calving age groups into consideration (2, 3, 4, 5, 6-8, 9 and 10 years of age and older). The factors for standardizing to mature equivalent estimated by polynomial regression are between the 24^th and 143^rd month and …

The effect of different levels of illumination in the early life development stage of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo) larvae was examined. It was determined that illumination affected the relationships between total length and digestive tube length, total length and oil globule volume, and total length and yolk sac volume. The difference in the development of total length of the larvae kept in the dark and in other lighting conditions (30-450 lx) was significant (P < 0.05); however, it was determined that digestive tube development, yolk sac utilisation, and oil globule absorption differences of the larvae were not significant (P > 0.05). As for the covariance test, while the relationship between total length and oil globule volume was not significantly (P > 0.05) different between Group A (dark) …
